I come here a lot for breakfasts. They open at 8am and it never tends to be busy around that time. Really simple but solid options for food. My personal favorite is the scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon. Service is always fast and friendly. They have tables inside and a few outside. For lunch I know it gets way more packed. There's a fridge full of various fresh cheeses and another fridge with ready to bake breads and pastries that you can take home to bake yourself. Lots of variety snacks throughout the store; often ones that you do not find at regular grocery stores. For example, they have dang Thai Rice chips, which are bomb good. I used to only be able to find these on Thrive market, so it's good to see a local place sell them. Staff were all friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have. Interesting note is that they have various checkout counters throughout the store; it doesn't matter which counter you pay at. From the deli, I have tried... 1. Kale Salad with Spicy Peanuts & Queso Fresco It's technically supposed to be a healthy dish, but the sauce was too sweet for my liking. Goodness, my boyfriend took me here on a random whim because I love pastries, and we kept smelling this delicious restaurant of some sorts and I had no idea it was coming from this particular place!! As we walked into the left side, there were all the savory delicious dinner plates as well as takeout and take home items you could take to heat up or make at your house! Sadly, we had dinner reservations at 9 PM so I kept smelling all these delicious savory bites, but I couldn't take anything with us nor were we able to make anything at our hotel room! There was a major cheese pull when I was picking up half of the sandwich so I was even more excited to try it! I do wish it had a bit more flavor, but all in all it was a pretty good sandwich! I haven't made it to their actual location yet, but I have a cuisine picky c-suite at work that I have to locate quality food for their lunches and Joan's has taken a seat at that rotational table for us. The professional way they package their meals for travel holds up well and the food arrives hot (or cold) and fresh and pretty well presented for traveling a few miles via delivery jockey. Friendly ordering experience and, after taking a number and finding a seat, the food came quickly. I like that you can serve yourself fresh tap water out of a tap in a nice sized cup - you aren't punished for not buying a drink if you just want tap water. I really enjoy the food at Joan's but I have had a few interactions at the 3rd street location recently where the women who run the place lack basic hospitality and friendliness and make it hard to want to come back. One example, I came in and ordered breakfast. I asked for bacon, didn't realize the cashier forgot to ring me up for it, then when the food came without the bacon and I asked for it, staff treated me like im the problem ("we'll add it to your bill and update your charge and you can go grab it from the pass yourself") On another occasion I placed a pickup order on doordash and went in. It's not clear where you pickup these ordered in the restaurant so I went where all the doordash drivers were. The lady manager spoke pretty rudely to this group and told folks just to hold their phones out and the team would help them while she shooed everyone into the corner. I checked in 40 mins after I had ordered and the staff couldn't find my meal- I didn't know they segregate the doordash lines separate for drivers and eaters. Why? Joan, if your operations are going to be this awkward, train your staff to at least be friendly and kind to your customers! We don't know as much as they do. read more

I am not usually a big fan of Chinese chicken salad, but after hearing her go on about it I decided to give it a try. This ended up being the best salad I have ever had. It was so simple yet so delicious. Everything about it was amazing. It tasted fresh, healthy, and clean, but also really flavorful. I know I will be thinking about it for a long time and I already want to try making it at home. The Chinese chicken salad here is absolutely a must and you need to try it. We also ordered the biscuits with honey butter. They came out warm and were just as good, soft and sweet in all the right ways. This is a low key spot in LA with plenty of seating, even on a Saturday when it was busy. I highly recommend and will definitely be coming back. You order before you sit and the line for the food is to your left and the pastries to your right when you enter. I like how they have other items that you can buy like the varied cheese when you walk around the store, presumably while you wait for your food or if your other party already knows what to order for you. Plenty of seats outside as well as inside and the food comes out really fast. I didn't know if coffee came with free refills. I would never know since no one ever came back to refill the coffee. If that's the case, they gave way too much cream on the side for one cup of coffee, which was actually pretty decent for a regular brew. The Chinese chicken salad had pretty much only one kind of lettuce in there. The chicken is fried or breaded with some kind of texture..so in case you're not into the fried types, you may have to ask for substitute or not order it. Flavor wise it's very simple.
