We ordered the chicken and waffles, the Japanese fluffy pancakes with chocolate and banana, and my friend had the Two Eggs Any Style with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and fluffy pancakes. The portions were generous and very filling. My friend really enjoyed her meal, and the chicken and waffles were pretty good too. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely tasty. But the real star of the meal was the Japanese fluffy pancakes with chocolate and banana. They were absolutely heavenly--the best fluffy pancakes I've ever had. I went to Flipper's for brunch over the recent Labor Day weekend. I decided to check it out because someone posted on Threads saying it was a great place to eat. However, the food was below my expectations. The ingredients didn't taste fresh, and the coffee was just okay. The service was decent, though. This morning, we had a family breakfast at Flippers in West Hollywood. My mom absolutely loves Japanese soufflé pancakes, and we've already been to other restaurants twice that specialize in them. I was very curious to see how the soufflé pancakes at Flippers would compare, so we decided to give it a try. Since today was a holiday, I wasn't sure whether the restaurant would be open, so I called yesterday to check. Unfortunately, no one answered the phone, and the call went straight to voicemail. But don't worry! I found out yesterday that Yelp has a feature that allows you to message a business directly, so I sent Flippers a message through Yelp. I have to say, this is such a useful and great feature. Kudos to Yelp for such a great idea! I explained that I had tried calling but no one answered, and asked whether they would be open the next day. They replied pretty quickly and confirmed that they would be open. Then I asked, "Do you take reservations for 5 people tomorrow?" Yvonne replied, "Yes, of course. Please let me know the time of your visiting." So I responded, "Great. Can I make a reservation at 10:30 am tomorrow for 5 people? Thanks." I didn't receive a reply to that message yesterday, but since they had already confirmed that they would be open, I figured we could just go in the morning. This morning, I discovered that she had replied this morning : "Appointment confirmed for 10:30AM PDT on Sep 7." I think we arrived around 10:10 AM. They asked us to wait a few minutes while they cleared and set up a large table that could accommodate all five of us. I told them, "Take your time," and went to the restroom. There was actually someone in the restroom who took an incredibly long time, so I had to wait quite a while. By the time I came back, everyone else was already seated at the table. My mom and I each ordered the Original Soufflé Pancakes. My father ordered the Chicken & Waffles, one of my brothers ordered the Salmon Eggs Benedict, and my other brother ordered the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. Everyone ordered coffee, but I asked whether they had decaf. They said they didn't, so I decided I would just have water. Then I saw the Matcha Latte on the menu and thought I might give it a try. However, when I asked about it, she asked whether regular milk was okay. I asked if they had non-fat milk, but she said they only had almond milk or oat milk. So I decided to stick with water after all. The service here was very nice and pleasant. They were very attentive and brought us whatever we needed right away, which I really appreciated. They also brought us plenty of napkins and neatly placed them in the napkin holder, which I thought was a very thoughtful and kind touch. Unfortunately, though, I was quite disappointed with the Original Soufflé Pancakes. They were much too bland for my taste and didn't have much flavor. Three soufflé pancakes came with my order. I ate only one, gave one to my mom, and gave the other one to my brother. Then I tried one piece of the chicken from my father's Chicken & Waffles, and WOW--the chicken was incredibly crispy and delicious! I would definitely recommend the Chicken & Waffles here. Unfortunately, my mom, my two brothers, and I were all not very impressed with our food overall. After we left the restaurant, my brothers even asked me why I had recommended this place! Plus After we finished eating, my father went to the restroom, and the rest of us sat at another table while waiting for him. A father and son came in with a beautiful Golden Retriever, and I couldn't resist saying hi because the dog was absolutely adorable. The dog was so friendly and came right over to us, so of course I had to pet him while making some small talk with them. During our conversation, they asked whether we had finished eating, and when we said yes, they asked if the soufflé pancakes were good because they had heard that this place was known for Japanese soufflé pancakes. I told them they were good, and especially recommended the Chicken & Waffles because the chicken was really delicious. They said, "Oh, we've heard about that!" Note There are both indoor and outdoor tables here. The indoor tables are mostly set up for two people, while the outdoor patio has larger tables that can accommodate bigger groups. We had Flippers in Shibuya last month and were missing Japan so much that when we found out there's a location in WeHo, we had to go! We ordered the fresh fruit soufflé pancake, the caramel banana chocolate soufflé pancake, and the eggs benedict with lox. Everything looked incredible and the pancakes are genuinely something special. They're super cloudy and fluffy, they just melt in your mouth. That said, they are very eggy so that's definitely something to know going in. It's an acquired taste for sure. Honestly though, it didn't quite hit the same as Japan. Flipper's was a solid brunch experience with some seriously photogenic food. The pancakes were definitely the star thick and fluffy, topped with chocolate cream, fresh banana, chocolate shavings, powdered sugar, and syrup on the side. Rich and decadent, so this is absolutely one to share unless you're committed to the challenge. We also tried the chicken and waffles. The waffles were nicely done and perfect with syrup, while the fried chicken had a good crispy coating and stayed juicy inside. We even added an extra basket of chicken with dipping sauces because apparently we came prepared to eat. Overall, the portions were generous, presentation was great, and everything was enjoyable. That said, while I liked the meal, it didn't quite reach that "I need to come back immediately" level for me. A few things were better than others, and for a brunch spot with this much hype, I was expecting just a little more wow factor. This review is based on three different visits over the past couple of months. Flipper's is fairly new to the neighborhood I live in, and they're a welcomed addition to the Fairfax District in West Hollywood. Please see the picture of the menu to get a full description of the meals I've eaten. First up was the "Two Eggs Any Style." I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon and the portions were good for the price. For me, the bacon wasn't very crispy and a little too greasy, but it tasted good enough. This meal comes with a salad, with a tasty dressing; avocados, tomatoes, and two tiny pieces of toast. I ordered a side of fries ($9, yikes) that were perfect. Crispy and very warm. Next visit I had the "Mushroom Omelette." It was a good size omelette and was hot upon delivery. I chose the bacon which again was tasty, but not crispy and too greasy. To compliment my meal, I selected the fries and toast which came with my meal. On another visit, I selected the "Croque Madame." This was really good and a decent sized portion. It arrived very warm and tasted great. I tried the Home Fries with this meal, and I was disappointed. They were overcooked and cold. I should have ordered the fries as those are great. I had a side of a Japanese style "Strawberry Banana Pancake" and it was very flavorful and delicious. The pancake also had blueberries inside. The staff is very friendly and helpful with any questions with the menu. My only complaint with two of the three visits is having to ask for refills of coffee, butter for the toast, extra napkins, etc. Unfortunately, on each visit no one came back to check up on us after the food was dropped. They are most known for their fluffy pancakes, but I was in more of a savory mood so I got their mushroom, spinach, & cheese omelette with toast, bacon, and hashbrowns. The eggs were super fluffy. Loved the hashbrowns they were extremely crispy just the way I like them. I asked for the bacon well done which they also honored and I appreciated that. Service was a bit slow and inattentive. Absolute charmer. Wonderful variety and tastes are found at Flipper's. We thought to come in for the lemon-ricotta pancakes, but ended up going in a different direction. How Hollywood. Technically, this is West Hollywood, but wherever you map it, Flipper's is definitely worth visiting. The mushroom spinach cheese omelette has many ways to customize: pick a protein plus a few other options, and you're set. The lox was a slight upcharge, but man, they loaded it up nicely. This is one packed, flavorful omelet. Recommend the home fries, too (or choose salad). Homefries have a bit of a kick: they are cubed, not greasy, and a great complement to the omelette. Sourdough toast to round things out. A ton of food for $18. Note on the coffee: Bottomless, and really good. I swear there were maple syrup notes to the black coffee. How pompous to say, fine. Still, that flavor was subtle (maybe even subliminal), and had a special quality to it. Also tried the Chicken and Waffles. Big win. The dark meat is moist and covered in a crispy breaded layer that is delicious and very easy to eat. Love the maple butter syrup, and the house special: whipped strawberry butter. I thought both of those additions (served on the side) would be too much for me, but I really liked them both. If that doesn't suit, you, each table has its own regular maple syrup. A ton of food for $20. The waffles are served kind of soft - almost cakey. Though flavorful, I prefer a bit of a crunch to my waffles, but no complaints. And, since I took home almost half of my order, they got some crunch when warmed in the toaster. For scientific purposes, we tried an order of their soufflé pancakes. Officially, Flipper's Pancake. Lovely, eggy, light and a tad sweet. Yum. Though there are many other varieties available (such as Fresh Fruit or Macha et al), I wanted to get a baseline first - and it was delicious. The whipped cream served with is a cozy complement that is so good. They fall apart easily (use the recommended two-fork method). Service was great. Outside is preferable as you're far enough from the street, and the air is good. Inside seems a bit loud, and it bit too cozy. Nice tunes playing on the patio, just loud enough to still have a conversation. A handful of parking spots off Fairfax on premises. Or, street parking. Such a unique spot for brunch - one that serves up souffle pancakes! I don't think I've ever had souffle pancakes before and they were as advertised - super fluffy and tasty. I didn't follow the directions on how to eat them because well... you just stuff your face with fluffy pancakes. Japanese style pancake shop. Got there around 1045 on a Saturday. No line but most of the tables were full. Theres counter seating and small tables inside, but most of the seating is outside. The pancakes did not dissapoint. The souffle pancakes had a great fluffy texture but still tasted great. Just as good as the ones i had in Japan. Eggs benedict tasted good. Bit messy plate with all the greens. I opted for the bacon. Looks like deep fried bacon. I think its affecting the quality of the fried potatos. read more

A friend of mine invited me to brunch and they chose so well! Flippers was such a pleasant surprise of THE fluffiest soufflé pancakes. So light in sweetness but in the best way possible. It paired well with the sweet and tart berries. You only need a very light drizzle of syrup. Service was very friendly and attentive. Indoor and outdoor seating.
