A cool, calm, and collected wine and cocktail bar, JMac's is a fun spot for a drink before a night out. We stopped in with a big crowd on a Saturday evening and settled into their retro, mid-century pieces in front of a nice picture window with a view, making for a perfect setting for a few cocktails. We started with a couple of their stout margaritas, and followed that up with some nicely flavored, and possibly scented, vodka sodas. Although the crowd was a bit on the older, quieter side, we enjoyed letting the conversation flow. read more

A cozy spot w/ all of the wine you could ever need... My friends and I booked a reservation for their WOW Wednesday where you get a private tasting of 4 wines paired with a charcuterie board. It was the perfect setting for a chill, social evening. We talked w/ the bartender a bit and got to try some really good wine from around the world. They have live music and open mic nights, etc + they have a cute little patio out back. Very cozy atmosphere - I'll be back! read more

What a TRUE FIND this place is!! Pouring rain before a concert at Soldiers & Sailors, we were running by to find a place for a snack ... looked in the windows.... J Mac's ... we went right in!!! Stopped in for a glass of wine after dinner. Was pleasantly surprised to find fresh truffles from Downtown Dough, which were perfectly paired with a nice Spanish wine. They both were quite a hit! We loved the non-pretentious feel of JMac's. So many times, while traveling we encounter wine snobbery, but not here. The workers are extremely knowledgeable in wine and can direct you to something to please your palette. Looking forward to returning and trying a cheese and charcuterie board. read more

What a great place. I would be a regular if I lived in Chattanooga! Can't beat the combination of good people, good wine, and good music! The owner John is an Advanced Sommolier and will help direct you to wines you will really enjoy. The food options are limited but very good. The charcuterie board was excellent. This bar is a great find! The wine selection is eclectic and delicious. We did not try anything that we didn't like and found some new favorites. The bartender is very knowledgeable and friendly; he was able to recommend choices for flights and tell us a bit about each wine. By the end of the night he knew enough about our taste preferences to make some spot on recommendations for glasses. The atmosphere is fantastic. There is a lot of space to spread out and socially distance while spending time with friends. There are many couches and comfortable chairs and the outdoor patio is very inviting. We will absolutely be back next time we are in Chattanooga. read more

If you're in Chattanooga this is definitely a must visit "wine destination spot". JMAC has a well thought out, non-commercial, fairly priced and extensive per pour wine list. Their charcuterie plate selections are amazing to pair-up with these wines. This was a nice surprise to find! Most wine bars seem to be carbon copies of each-other with run-of-the-mill big name producers, typical varitals, "going through motions" wait staff and the ever tired Spotify "cafe jazz" live-streams....NOT HERE! Atop the extensive wine list, the staff are engaging, well versed with these wines and are there to help educate you in the process. Its a fun open environment where you can actually learn about wines while you drink them, kinda like a free wine class with every glass poured. Too the decor is really fun! The bar is full of functional Mid Century Modern pieces which give it that cool, edgy retro "Rat Pack" vibe with all sorts of classic Sinatra, Big Band, Blues music in the background along with an old school turntable and vinyl thats played. Our date night perfect spot. Walking in the door the weeks stress drops away. Everything about this place makes me happy. We really enjoy the chefs choice charcuterie platter. The music, the location, the vibe and the people are all just spot on. The wine list is excellent, the cheese selections are awesome and I heard tonight they are adding oysters to the menu next week. An intimate yet very social experience that feels like a snapshot from the past. Every time we come here we meet wonderful people. Cannot recommend this spot any more highly. My friends and I had the worst experience ever. We ordered glasses of wine. One friend ordered a bottle of wine. No one ever came back to see if we needed another glass or anything but they were happy to serve the people at the bar. Once they never came back we were ready to go so had to go to the bar to ask one of them to give us our ticket. We paid and of course, we didn't leave a tip because the service was horrible. As we were leaving out the door the owner followed us out and said "Is there a reason you all didn't leave a tip." As we were explaining why we didn't leave any tips he said "that's why I don't like y'all coming in here and that we must need the money more than him." We told him off after that but he tried slamming the door in our faces after we responded to what he said. We're going to make sure people know that he doesn't want our kind in his establishment. read more

I'm not a wine snob by any means, but we had to try this place after driving by and seeing the neon sign. Just looked like a cool little place and it did not disappoint. Had a great cheese plate along with a beer for me and my wife had a glass of wine. This place reminds me of what a restaurant/bar used to be like decades ago. Seems to be a great place to go before a show at Memorial Auditorium or the Walker Theater. read more

I highly recommend the "Bartender's Choice" cocktail option--the staff is incredibly skilled, and the drinks they crafted were awesome. However, management needs to fix their highly deceptive checkout flow. The bar chooses not to bake Tennessee's mandatory 15% Liquor-by-the-Drink tax into their menu prices. When the bartender flips the POS tablet to pay, the system completely hides the itemized receipt. It jumps straight to a final total that includes a combined 24.25% in state and liquor taxes. To make matters worse, the screen presents ridiculous suggested tip options of 20%, 30%, and 40%--which are calculated on top of that heavily taxed final total rather than the subtotal. If you just tap a prompt, you end up aggressively tipping on hidden taxes. Come for the excellent cocktails and great bartenders, but ignore the suggested buttons and manually calculate your tip based on the actual menu price of your drinks.

Wonderful evening! Wine flight & cheese board were fantastic. We enjoyed local Sequatchie Valley cheeses along side nuts, meats, dried fruits. Tried several different wines and selected our favorites for our next trip in. read more

We got a table on the patio, since we had my mother's dog along. patio is a little small, but decent. I was super pumped about ordering the breakfast tostada. Went to order and found out they were out. So, I ordered the farmhouse skillet. Food took a little while to order, even though they weren't that busy. Food was delicious. Perfect size and yummy. My mom and step dad ordered the steak breakfast. They ordered medium well and it came out medium at best. I will say, it was nice that a nice gentleman brought the dog some water. It was a decent place.

Street level, this appears to be a small place, but as I quickly learned, looks can be deceiving as there are levels below street level, as well as an outside patio. This also happens to be where the kitchen is set up in a trailer. Clever Alehouse is very laid back and comfortable. This strikes me as a neighborhood "joint". There's a reasonable variety of food, a decent beer selection, and the staff incredibly friendly and attentive. Their entry for Burger Week was excellent, one of the better burgers I've sampled this week. Clearly, this warrants a return visit, so I can sample more of what is offered from a food selection.

Update to my first review, we've gone back 3 times since and each has been progressively worse…read more This last time the burger tasted like a frozen patty that had a touch of freezer burn. Assuming they use fresh meat, so the it was burnt or poorly seasoned. Whatever the case, I left 90% of it on my plate. One woman behind the bar seems to do everything from making drinks, running food and bussing tables and never once washed her hands.

The carrots were perfectly cooked and a great starter along side the broken potatoes. The broken potatoes are ridiculously delicious, crisp and savory, honestly a side of those with some cocktails and you are set for the night. The catfish was tender on the in side and crisp on the out and the pulled chicken sandwich kept on giving and with a side of the caramelized onions added was the bees knees. I was surprised at first by the limited menu but I was really impressed with every dish our table ordered. Went for brunch and got an order of the grilled coffee cake and spiced shishito peppers. Entrees we had BLTC, breakfast tacos, and catfish sando. They used Niedlov's bread which was a great plus too! Great food all around and our service was nice, would recommend for sure.
