The old Jin Chan used to be one of my favorite Chinese places in Boulder, even though it still wasn't great Chinese. This new Jin Chan is awful. Incredibly greasy food. My girlfriend and I actually couldn't finish our dishes. They weren't just off on taste they were actually physically gross. Also, the smell of mothballs or some other chemical pervades the place and I was clawing at the chance to get out of it. Had a waiter seat me, but then had to order up front. For our first time trying out Jin Chan today, we ordered a bunch of takeout dishes and appetizers for a lazy eat-in lunch. The Good: Not expensive, free delivery, no MSG (claimed, anyhow) and the menu covers a lot of ground. The beef rolls were particularly tasty and everything was still hot when it got here. The Less Good: It's hard to think of anything really special about the other entrees. It seemed like food you would find on any Americanized Chinese buffet . Disappointed! This palace used to be my fairly regular Vietnamese noodle soup place but apparently it was no more (I did moved out of town for a few years). Better yet the name of my favorite Chinese restaurant "Jin Chan" appears on the sign. But do not be foul, this is not the Jin Chan used to be on 28th st across from the 29th street mall, completely different and not half as good as the old Jin Chan. Ordered for delivery and it took over two hours to get to me, and the food was cold when it arrived. Actual food was hit-and-miss...the fried rice and kung pao chicken were greasy but OK, nothing special but not terrible. Would have liked the kung pao to be spicier and to have more vegetables in the fried rice (there were hardly any veggies, but to their credit there was lots of meat). The egg rolls, omg the egg rolls...I tried both the vegetable and the pork-filled ones, and I literally couldn't tell the difference between the two. I hate giving poor reviews, but this was terrible. The fried rice had an unpleasant odor, but was basically tasteless brown rice with barely noticeable bits of egg. My entree was dried out and very stringy, and the spring rolls were so drenched in oil that they dripped every time I tried to take a bite. I've been going to Jin Chan for years, even before they moved. I was there about a month ago for my last time. I often get the sesame tofu which has gone down over the years, at some point they removed broccoli from the recipe so you just get tofu and chow mein noodles. The last few times I went the service was less than inspired The space has always been a bit funky which is part of the appeal but when I looked at the state of the kitchen the past few times it made me wonder how they were compliant with health code. I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp for take out, and what I got was utterly disgusting. The shrimp had not been de-veined which if you're not familiar means that the shrimp's feces was still in my food. Also the shrimp that was de-veined was rotting. Worst Chinese Food. Placed an order for delivery with hungrybuffs.com and ordered fried rice with pork, pork dumplings and general tao's chicken. The fried rice was the worst out of the three. When i opened it, it smelled like a dead wet dog and tasted the same no joke. The Tao's chicken was nothing like the real stuff and was more like sweet and sour chicken. The Pork dumplings tasted like they were at least 3 days old and I threw out the dumplings and fried rice right off the bat. Ordered dinner through HungryBuffs 2. Waited an hour 3. Checked e-mail, saw cancellation note from HungryBuffs stating that our order had been canceled by the restaurant. 4. Called Jin Chan to ask what was going on 5. Told that they were too busy and canceled the order because they had more deliveries closer to their location and my order wasn't worth their time. 6. The city is 5mi x 5mi and OrderUp was supposed to deliver it anyway. Does this place care that little not only about actually turning a profit, but keeping their customer base? It was the first cooler day of the fall season, so I decided to go for some pho. I work alone and can't leave, so I had someone pick up the food for me. When I opened the packaging, the noodles and broth were separate and the "bowl" was so full you couldn't put any noodles in without displacing the broth, and there was no utensils of any kind in the bag. So I called the store, and let whoever it was know the issue. She eventually said that she'd send someone out to bring some. Almost an hour later (50+ minutes), I get a call from a girl saying she had my utensils. I told her it took so long to get them here that my food was cold, so I was gonna return the food so that I could get my money back. I wasn't gonna pay for cold or lukewarm pho. And rice noodles are horrible after microwaving. So I told the girl, who was too lazy to even bring them in to me, that I was gonna call the manager. She responds. "That wont help, I'm the manager's daughter." We went back and forth and she says "F**k You" and hangs up the phone I called the manager and he said I was lucky that she even tried to bring the stuff out to me. He then suggested that I put it in the microwave. This was a horrible first impression of the restaurant and I will not be visiting again. I placed an online order via HungryBuffs for dinner for my family. Nearly an hour went by, and we still didn't have our food. I logged on to my account to make sure that my order had gone through, only to find that I received an email telling me that my order had been canceled! The email informing me of this was sent 48 minutes after I had placed my order. My kids were hungry and grumpy (and so was I). So, I called the restaurant to find out why my order had been canceled. The man answering the phone told me that the special that they were not honoring the special pricing that was being advertised on HungryBuffs, and that they had told HungryBuffs to remove it from their site. I told him that I was willing to pay the higher price, but that we just wanted our food. He proceeded to tell me that there was nothing he could do because they were too busy?!?! If you get them on the right day, the chicken wings could be the best you have ever had in your life - perfectly fried with not too thick, not to thin batter and hints of pepper flake and spice. They nail it about one out of three visits. They are so good in fact, it's almost worth three trips to get them once. They are also terribly rude on the phone. AND THEY HAVE A $5 DELIVERY CHARGE. If I was only rating Jin Chan's food I would give it two stars. It is bland and somewhat greasy. However the two times we have ordered delivery were totally unsatisfactory. The first attempt took over 90 minutes and the food was luke warm upon receipt. The second, and LAST, time we cancelled the order after a full two hours of waiting. Would strongly recommend getting your Chinese food from somewhere else. read more
