I love this place. My colleagues and I have been coming here for years and through 2 owners. The current owner is a total gentleman and will greet you with a smile when you enter. The food is great, with my favorites being the Crispy Pork and the Chow Fun (like Pad See Ew at Thai restaurants). Their Hot & Sour Soup is the best I've had! Their lunch menu is affordable with pretty much everything being $9 or $10 and comes with fried rice and a crab Rangoon and egg roll (not a crab Rangoon fan so I ask for 2 egg rolls). They recently added more outdoor seating under some trees which is nice. Bathroom is clean too. Plenty of parking. Overall, a nice local place. On a Sunday around noon, we stopped by for some lunch and were surprised that no one was inside as the other restaurants were busy. This establishment is definitely small. It's not catered for big groups and can only fit about 3 people per table comfortably. Once we sat down at a table, I noticed lots of fruit flies on the inside windows. The area didn't seem clean and I was watching my food more than eating it. The food was not up to par to other Chinese places I've been to. There was hardly, if any, flavor to the fried rice. I ordered the green vegetables in garlic sauce and the veggies were good, but didn't taste like garlic at all. Also, the sauce was more like a soup as the to go box was overflowing with it. Another thing I want to note is that it was hard to communicate with the staff. I asked the guy if the green veggie dish came with fried rice and he said no so I ordered an extra fried rice. However, when I got the meal it did come with fried rice and I had way too much food. I also think he charged us extra for an appetizer we didn't order. This was my first time going to Fans. I was just in the mood for some hot and sour soup so I ordered two large hot and sour soups to go. It was so good! I actually ate the whole entire large soup. It was very fresh. You could tell the ingredients were fresh. The mushrooms in the soup were very delicious! I will definitely be back to try other dishes. Vegetarian friendly. The fake chicken is really good. Sesame tofu my wife and kids eat every time- perfect consistency. It's light batter, lightly fried, then tossed with sesame and a glaze. Not too soft like most tofu other places. Not too hard though either. Perfectly done. It's a surprise to find so much veg friendly chinese in a small town like Niwot. Awww, I give this place a solid 3 stars. I was hoping to have a new Chinese place to get takeout on the way home. It is ok. I have been to China several times in my life and have seen real Chinese food. This is more Americanized. And it isn't their fault, they are probably catering to what people here want. Same with other Chinese restaurants. I want to see the Chinese menu. LOL. If there is one. That probably has the good stuff on there. I asked for spicy and it was sub mild at best. This is my review of the Beef Chow Fun and Ma Po Tofu, I haven't had anything else here. I just wanted to say I love the authenticity of this restaurant, and the no MSG!!! That already won me over! The chow fun was made with the fat noodles, Chinese style and there was a large amount of tofu in the Ma Po Tofu dish. The price is very reasonable for the Niwot/Boulder area, they even provide the hot tea complimentary. I liked their get-to-the-point type service, no coddling or trying to butter you up. You order the dish, it gets served, you pay and leave, no fake chit-chatting. This means, it's a great to get in and get some work done, being unbothered, and then leaving after a meal. It was so small... How small was it? Let's just say that when we walked in, the staff was taken aback that we actually wanted to dine IN. The majority of their business seemed to be take-out and although the staff was quite accommodating, I would recommend it. I found a new favorite with the Amazing Chicken. Our party also had the Sweet and Sour Pork and Orange Chicken. Both were good but we dived into that Amazing Chicken (with tons of veggies). Food was served family style with a large communal bowl of white rice. Entrees were about $10 a piece. I recently ordered to go from Fans since it's the closest to my house. I always go with the Singapore Noodles, extra spicy, and some egg rolls. My husband gets Orange chicken and white rice. Everything was ready when I arrived, the only part that I didn't like is that the establishment smelled of cigarettes. Glad I got my food to go. Consider the audience. Five stars wouldn't be a stretch. FOOD This is Chinese food for Americans, half salt-of-the-earth, half athletes. It's a crazy place, the Front Range. So they have Americanized Chinese food. They don't use MSG or trans-fat. You can get tons of fresh, crisp, bright veggies. You can get meat and starch, hold the veggies. They do gluten-free. What's your taste? Ok, I'd like some good tea. They have one kind of hot tea, and it's passable. There are a couple other things you could complain about if you wanted to be a punk, but you don't like to be a punk, do you. Neither do it. I'd argue that a small town like Niwot could hardly support a 5-star establishment. They custom-make plates to specifications. Hate bamboo shoots? Order whatever dish without them. Want extra garlic? Suit yourself; I wasn't planning to make out with you anyway. We have successfully ordered dishes with no sugar, even. They made a special batch of unsweetened sauce. BRILLIANT. Where else can you get that kind of attention? A few places, actually, but it's still rare. SERVICE It is ridiculous how nice these people are. Seriously. Not counting the high school kids they hire, which is easy to ignore, the family that runs this place is unbelievably sweet. Anything you want, as long as you can weave through the language barriers, you get. Actually, that's a worthwhile point: speak in plain, simple language. Now is not the time to work on your complex prose. Instead of "I'd like the chicken with mixed veggies, but sugar would be a problem, so if you can make it without that, I'd greatly appreciate it," stick with "Chicken with mixed veggies, no sugar. This place has gone downhill fast! We started eating here about a year ago and loved it! Then, they started over-padding their meat dishes with cheap vegetables and including very little meat. I noticed this change over a period of a few months. THEN they started including cheap vegetables in dishes that never included them at all! For instance, I always order chicken and eggplant with garlic sauce. As the name depicts, this dish originally only include chicken and eggplant. As the months progressed, this dish had less and less chicken and eggplant and more and more water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, and baby corns; not even included in the description of the dish. When I complained about the situation, the customer service was HORRIBLE! The woman, who claimed to be the manager and refused to let me speak to anyone else, did nothing but argue with me incessantly about how nothing has changed with their dishes (when it was obvious it had since I had been ordering the same dish for a year) and yell at me. When I requested a refund on my dish because it was horrible the woman refused, stating "that would cost me money". A company that changes the quality of their food, then refuses to take responsibility for it will not be receiving my business again and hopefully this will stop others from wasting their money at this establishment as well. Couple that with a "Manager" that yells at and argues with customers, as well as having no interest in rectifying the situation, and you have a very undesirable restaurant! read more

I'm honestly not sure how Fans is still in business. We try it about once a year when we are desperate and too lazy to go into Boulder to get food. Again last night we got burned. The Crab Rangoon had only a hint of filling and tasted like a dirty deep fryer. I could see the filling but that was about it. It looked like someone painted a small amount of filling on the inside just for looks. Super disappointing and literally unable to discern any flavor at all other than the deep fryer. The Lo Mein was flavorless except for the taste of oil and a dirty wok. I like spicy stuff so I got the Sichuan Fried Pork. The pork was stringy and hard. There was absolutely zero spice or flavor in this dish. It was in this brown sauce that didn't taste like anything other than salt. The veggies in my dish were 90% celery with a few token carrots thrown in. Freaking celery? Really? We didn't finish and threw most of the meal in the compost. All around every single time this place just serves up flavorless garbage. I'm amazed that they can actually put out food with so little flavor. You have been warned. Just don't do it! read more

What an awesome unassuming place! Great for casually sitting with your family and enjoying tea while waiting for your order. Great for delivery and take out too! The staff is nothing but friendly. The people running the establishment are kind and go out of their way to get what you want from your food. If you want to sit in and eat, don't expect frilly decorations or goodies. I'll second Mozza R's comment that this is not spicy, even though it was marked on the menu as such. Wouldn't call it bland, but it was about average for Chinese food I've had before. The staff is a bit difficult to understand, but very kind. They kept trying to push soup on me -- I was a bit put off by that. Agree with another review that they seemed shocked someone would want to eat IN. If you don't want people to eat at your restaurant don't have tables for people to do so. Though friendly the lady spoke little to no English so trying to request a separate check for one person was next to impossible and more than a little frustrating. She went & got the man to come tell is repeatedly they don't take checks. I finally had to say pretty bluntly NO ONE IS PAYING WITH A CHECK before they would listen. Overall the food was good. I'm a huge fan of peanut sauce so the peanut butter chicken was right up my alley. Kids seemed to like the sweet&sour as well as the sesame chicken. Delivery is very fast. But this is the third time I've asked for my chicken extra crispy (ie leave it in the deep fryer for an extra 45 seconds) and it's been soggy af every single time. I promise it's not from the time it takes to transport. Any other place manages just fine. I don't care if my request is stupid - if I ask politely and someone understands and agrees to my request, then i believe it should be fulfilled. I honestly wouldn't care if they said they won't do it for me. It just makes me feel bad to ask and not get what I enjoy eating. We were visiting from Colorado Springs and I had a craving for Chinese food. I read reviews but they really just were about take out. I ordered Mongolian beef for me and Combo Low mein for husband. We both had the egg drop soup. The prices were reasonable and this is definitely a hole in the wall place which is usually a good thing to me. We got out soup first and it was adequate, somewhat bland. Our food came and I was pleased. It was fresh and hot. But as I ate I realized I hardly had any beef in my order. They give you a ton of rice a few veggies (which were cooked beautifully) Mongolian beef is suppose to be spicy but it was not. It was adequate. My husbands low mean was adequate as well. If you are just hungry and not really picky you may like this place. Vegetarians they their veggies very well. It was fast, and clean but I wont go out of my way to go back anytime soon. read more

Very good food, friendly service, at a great price. This is a small, family-run Chinese restaurant in the Cottonwood Square plaza in the small town of Niwot, just northeast of Boulder. My wife & I are new to Boulder and are trying to find our "go-to" restaurants in the area. We never did find a Chinese restaurant we liked in our previous home of Sarasota, FL. Thanks to our fellow Yelpers, I'm glad to say that we can cross Chinese off our list; Fan's is a winner. We arrived around 6:00 pm on a monday (Fan's is open 7 days!) and there was only one other couple seated in the small, unassuming dining room. It quickly became evident that most of Fan's business is take-out and/or delivery, as the kitchen stayed pretty busy. Service was warm, friendly, and personable; we got all of our food quickly. My wife enjoyed her Wonton Soup, and I was pleasantly surprised by the Hot & Sour, (as I had to stop ordering it in Florida, it was so bad there.) We followed the soup with the Fried Dumplings, which were quite tasty as well; and done just right (am I the only one who has gotten pot stickers that were burned on the outside & not cooked all the way through?) For the main course, we ordered the Szechuan Chicken and the General Chou's Tofu. Both were wonderful! We walked out of the restaurant smiling. I had to stop myself from giving Fan's an even higher rating, but the dining area does detract a bit. In my opinion, though, the food & service more than make up for it.
