I love this place. My colleagues and I have been coming here for years and through 2 owners. The current owner is a total gentleman and will greet you with a smile when you enter. The food is great, with my favorites being the Crispy Pork and the Chow Fun (like Pad See Ew at Thai restaurants). Their Hot & Sour Soup is the best I've had! Their lunch menu is affordable with pretty much everything being $9 or $10 and comes with fried rice and a crab Rangoon and egg roll (not a crab Rangoon fan so I ask for 2 egg rolls). They recently added more outdoor seating under some trees which is nice. Bathroom is clean too. Plenty of parking. Overall, a nice local place. This was my first time going to Fans. I was just in the mood for some hot and sour soup so I ordered two large hot and sour soups to go. It was so good! I actually ate the whole entire large soup. It was very fresh. You could tell the ingredients were fresh. The mushrooms in the soup were very delicious! I will definitely be back to try other dishes. On a Sunday around noon, we stopped by for some lunch and were surprised that no one was inside as the other restaurants were busy. This establishment is definitely small. It's not catered for big groups and can only fit about 3 people per table comfortably. Once we sat down at a table, I noticed lots of fruit flies on the inside windows. The area didn't seem clean and I was watching my food more than eating it. The food was not up to par to other Chinese places I've been to. There was hardly, if any, flavor to the fried rice. I ordered the green vegetables in garlic sauce and the veggies were good, but didn't taste like garlic at all. Also, the sauce was more like a soup as the to go box was overflowing with it. Another thing I want to note is that it was hard to communicate with the staff. I asked the guy if the green veggie dish came with fried rice and he said no so I ordered an extra fried rice. However, when I got the meal it did come with fried rice and I had way too much food. I also think he charged us extra for an appetizer we didn't order. Vegetarian friendly. The fake chicken is really good. Sesame tofu my wife and kids eat every time- perfect consistency. It's light batter, lightly fried, then tossed with sesame and a glaze. This is my review of the Beef Chow Fun and Ma Po Tofu, I haven't had anything else here. I just wanted to say I love the authenticity of this restaurant, and the no MSG!!! That already won me over! The chow fun was made with the fat noodles, Chinese style and there was a large amount of tofu in the Ma Po Tofu dish. The price is very reasonable for the Niwot/Boulder area, they even provide the hot tea complimentary. I liked their get-to-the-point type service, no coddling or trying to butter you up. You order the dish, it gets served, you pay and leave, no fake chit-chatting. This means, it's a great to get in and get some work done, being unbothered, and then leaving after a meal. I'm honestly not sure how Fans is still in business. We try it about once a year when we are desperate and too lazy to go into Boulder to get food. Again last night we got burned. The Crab Rangoon had only a hint of filling and tasted like a dirty deep fryer. I could see the filling but that was about it. It looked like someone painted a small amount of filling on the inside just for looks. Super disappointing and literally unable to discern any flavor at all other than the deep fryer. The Lo Mein was flavorless except for the taste of oil and a dirty wok. I like spicy stuff so I got the Sichuan Fried Pork. The pork was stringy and hard. There was absolutely zero spice or flavor in this dish. It was in this brown sauce that didn't taste like anything other than salt. The veggies in my dish were 90% celery with a few token carrots thrown in. Freaking celery? Really? We didn't finish and threw most of the meal in the compost. All around every single time this place just serves up flavorless garbage. I'm amazed that they can actually put out food with so little flavor. You have been warned. Just don't do it! read more

So they have Americanized Chinese food. They don't use MSG or trans-fat. You can get tons of fresh, crisp, bright veggies. You can get meat and starch, hold the veggies. They do gluten-free. What's your taste? Ok, I'd like some good tea. They have one kind of hot tea, and it's passable. There are a couple other things you could complain about if you wanted to be a punk, but you don't like to be a punk, do you. Neither do it. I'd argue that a small town like Niwot could hardly support a 5-star establishment. They custom-make plates to specifications. Hate bamboo shoots? Order whatever dish without them. Want extra garlic? Suit yourself; I wasn't planning to make out with you anyway. We have successfully ordered dishes with no sugar, even. They made a special batch of unsweetened sauce. BRILLIANT. Where else can you get that kind of attention? A few places, actually, but it's still rare. SERVICE It is ridiculous how nice these people are. Seriously. Not counting the high school kids they hire, which is easy to ignore, the family that runs this place is unbelievably sweet. Anything you want, as long as you can weave through the language barriers, you get. Actually, that's a worthwhile point: speak in plain, simple language. Now is not the time to work on your complex prose. This place has gone downhill fast! We started eating here about a year ago and loved it! Then, they started over-padding their meat dishes with cheap vegetables and including very little meat. I noticed this change over a period of a few months. THEN they started including cheap vegetables in dishes that never included them at all! For instance, I always order chicken and eggplant with garlic sauce. As the name depicts, this dish originally only include chicken and eggplant. As the months progressed, this dish had less and less chicken and eggplant and more and more water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, and baby corns; not even included in the description of the dish. When I complained about the situation, the customer service was HORRIBLE! The woman, who claimed to be the manager and refused to let me speak to anyone else, did nothing but argue with me incessantly about how nothing has changed with their dishes (when it was obvious it had since I had been ordering the same dish for a year) and yell at me. When I requested a refund on my dish because it was horrible the woman refused, stating "that would cost me money". A company that changes the quality of their food, then refuses to take responsibility for it will not be receiving my business again and hopefully this will stop others from wasting their money at this establishment as well. Couple that with a "Manager" that yells at and argues with customers, as well as having no interest in rectifying the situation, and you have a very undesirable restaurant! read more
