Experience pales next to South Street Wimpy cheesesteak... ...but nice people I gave this location a shot with my family while driving to visit relatives, hoping it captured the essence I wanted. Sure enough, the menu is similar to downtown, and they mimicked much of the look too. Unfortunately, the wait was not much improved, even though it was 2pm on President's Day - still about 25 minutes from walking in 'til steak & shake in hand. When we'd all been served, the roll was right, the meat was fine, the cheese was thin...but it just didn't collectively add up. Light on substance and taste, I actually felt bad for my family (from Rhode Island) thinking this was the example everybody talks up as prime Philly cuisine. I finished up vowing that next time I'd be more serious about finding them a shining star. Jim's Steaks is my favorite place to stop when I'm in my hometown. I frequent this location a lot visiting friends and family. I love Jim's because of the taste and quality of their chicken cheesesteak. Not all places carry chicken but they do and I love it. Oh, I can't forget my cheese fries with wiz and I wash it down with a pineapple soda. I recommend this place and I'll be back during my next trip. This place is the absolute worst. I have never come in without getting an attitude by one of the cashiers. I called for takeout yesterday and the woman answering the phone was extremely rude. Really, we all know this place will never be like the original, or like the South Street location. Don't even bother trying to compare. But, last time I decided to give them a try for the heck of it, they made a pretty decent chicken cheesesteak with real chicken chunks, and lots of them. I was satisfied. Just don't expect much. I really love this location. Parking is free and there is plenty of it. The line is never crazy long. There are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy my meal. The big TV is a plus. I like the black and white tile set up The staff is really friendly and the location is clean. The gentlemen behind the grill is very friendly and always gets my order right. There is plenty of meat on my cheese steak. No skimping there. I usually eat half a steak in one sitting and finish the rest later on. The fries are good and fresh. Today I observed a concerning breakdown in accountability and professionalism on the part of Jim Steaks employees at this location. Now the cast of characters and what went terribly wrong. There were (4) people present when I placed my order today. The fry cook seemed to be charged with not only cooking the food but tracking orders and that seemed like responsibilities that were better left to the other employees. There was another man who came in and out of the back who seemed to parrot orders but that wasn't effective. While we stood for a time, waiting for the fry cook to take our order, a woman gingerly walked in from outside and jumped in front of us. She clearly knew members of the establishment because she was welcomed so the act wasn't even chastised. At that moment, I felt a weird "uh-oh" feeling but tried to brush it off and just order!  When we pointed out that no one had even taken our order, the fry cook seemed annoyed (to be fair, probably not so much with us but the state of poor assistance in the restaurant). Then there was a kindly, mature African American woman assigned to the cash register. I have frequented this location of Jim's Steaks for years, and I never saw the mature cashier before.  We repeatedly told her our order and before submitting payments asked to split the order. Again, prior to handing over a card, we made it clear we would like the order split between TWO cards.  I specifically wanted to pay for my order. A frazzled look came over the cashier's face and she asked if she could just split the order between two cards. So, she ignored my initial request in favor of something, I assume, she thought she knew how to perform on the cash register. In trying to help the cashier along, I said ok..please SPLIT the order. She said she would place the remaining balance on my brother's card. Then the mature cashier proceeded to place the ENTIRE order on my card. When confronted, suddenly, a young (I assume more experienced) Caucasian woman appeared and promptly told us "Sorry, no refunds. There is nothing we can do." Huh?!!! To add insult to injury, the cashier and this young lady told my brother to go to the establishment's ATM and take money out of his account...TO SOLVE THEIR EMPLOYEES ERROR. I say...WHAT? So let me get this straight. Your employee made an error. Rather than provide genuine apologies or a respectable solution, WE need to go over to YOUR ATM and take out money??! Flustered with the outright lack of professionalism displayed by this group, I was still very cordial yet honest with the young woman as she stood beside the matured cashier. I told her my money was tight and I really needed her to correct THEIR error. The look of disgust and annoyance that came over the young woman's face told me I was dealing with a caliber of employee that clocks in and out, is NEVER wrong and will go to the mat for all the wrong reasons in a hot second. Again, I was told. "Yeah, we can't help you. No refunds." She didn't WANT  to make it right. I was so incensed by how I was treated, I left and asked my brother to collect the food. To be clear, I'm not a "hold my earrings" kind of customer. I will do my best to work with an employee because everyone makes mistakes. Later, my brother told me the staff wanted patrons to track their orders in a way that suggested they didn't have a system in place to know who got what. In other words, they asked for too much involvement from patrons in tracking food orders that it felt unprofessional and inappropriate. It went beyond asking what you ordered! How myself and my brother were treated made me sick.  Jim's Steaks is not cheap! We just placed my 82 y/o father in rehab after a scary craniotomy and after weeks of fear and wondering if he would make it, we decided to chill out and grab a bite to eat. Parking in town and hospital stay...not cheap! I share this to say, we all got hardships. Don't punish your customers for odd personal gripes that spill into the workplace. We aren't bothering you. We paid for the meals! Take accountability for your actions! read more

This place is a gem. We tried to go to a favorite steak place in Philly and it was closed at like 10pm (odd) so on the way back to Delaware we stopped here instead. The cheesesteak really hit the spot... greasy, cheesy, quick - exactly what we were looking for. I was so pleased to discover that there is a Jim's Steaks with a parking lot! Believe me, parking on South Street is not fun, and having already been on South Street earlier that afternoon, we were looking for a location closer to our hotel. Plus, this place had absolutely no line, which really made the process so much more enjoyable. Delicious, authentic Philly cheesesteak served here. I still insist that they serve up the best cheesesteak, but you don't have to take my word. Try it for yourself (and avoid the tourist traps). Place was cool and clean (it was hot outside). The staff seemed friendly enough -- we didn't realize we had to order from the cook and the cashier caught on pretty quickly. A spider on the table mildly freaked me out, but better than seeing any other kind of vermin. Bathroom was clean as well. Hello consumers. Just went to Jim steaks in Springfield, me and my neighbor to get cheesesteaks. The plan was to sit and eat our sandwiches. However, when placing my order it appeared that everyone that was working there two guys and a Lady all had attitudes, as if they didn't want to do the job in a professional manner. When placing my order, I let the cook know what I wanted on my sandwich and I emphasized that I wanted light mayonnaise. While waiting for sandwiches, the cook asked my neighbor if he wanted mayonnaise on his sandwich also. My neighbor told him yes and all I did was remind him that I wanted light mayonnaise. The cook got nasty with me and said I heard you the first time the second time and the third time. I said to myself WOW. So I politely told him you eat the sandwich and me and my neighbor left. I had visited this location before and my experience was great. However, tonight left me with the desire never to return to this location. Maybe the staff at Jim steaks in Springfield might want to visit a Chick-fil-A so they can learn how to do customer service. Food is great, service is HORRIBLE! Management seems clueless. No worker has their own tasks they are responsible for, it's just a free for all & a chaotic mess bc everyone is just all over the place & confused. It's really not that difficult to solve all those issues. I spent 6 years during college & post college as a manager in food service & my mind is blown every time I watch the employees waiting for food. Don't bother calling an order in on the phone they just won't answer. I went to this Jim location 8/7/20 at 1 AM (technically the 8th.) and the two guys operating the grill were so kind and down the earth one had a blue streak in his hair and one had the best smile!!!!! I would come back solely bc of them. Thats the type of people everyone needs on the front lines of their business. One of Philly's iconic cheesesteak places, Jim's Steaks, has a restaurant just a few minutes away from my girlfriends parent's house. Of course on a recent trip to visit them we made a point to get some of these. Seriously, is it even a trip to Philly without getting a cheesesteak? All of the Cheesesteaks at Jim's are build-your-own. I ordered steak with wiz topped with peppers and grilled onions. This was a damn good cheesesteak. Each bite had perfectly cooked steak plus plenty of cheese wiz. What's not to love with this bite. My girlfriend prefers her Cheesteak with just onions and wiz. Again, it was another awesome bite. We also split an order of Cheese Fries. They were thin and crispy - how I like them, and topped with plenty of cheesy goodness. read more

I was a die hard Jim's Steak fan. I didn't want my hoagies from any other place but Jim's. Notice I say WAS. Tonight, I went to Jim's for a Special Italian hoagie shop. I stated that I wanted a Special Italian and the young lady who was preparing it asked if I wanted oil. I stated that I wanted oil on the bottom of the roll and on top, she gave me 1 drop on the bottom; she then proceded to put turkey on the hoagie, when I told her again, that I had a italian hoagie, she said under her breath, "oh, so you don't want turkey?" I told her no...."turkey doesn't go on an italian hoagie". She then went on to ask if I wanted salt, pepper and oregano and I said yes, she asked again, I assumed that she had did this because I said it several times and I then I moved out of someone's way...When I get home, I didn't have any of these things on the hoagie, it was also dry and the Sierra Desert. I also had asked for peppers on the side and didn't receive that either. 2 weeks ago, I went in asked for an Italian hoagie and they told me they had were out of onions for the hoagie and had to give me the raw diced onions from the steak station. I told them no thank you and left. Jim's hoagies are also known for the big bermuda (rings) onions. I have several other incidents for this store but this is already a long review. I just want Jim's to train their people properly in this Art. I'm born and bred Philly and we want a TRUE Hoagie which is what Philly is known for and what Jim's is known for. Good cheesesteak, a little light on the cheese and a little heavy on the grease. The real problem here is the staff. The South Street location is a well oiled machine. You order, you get your food fast. This place is completely disorganized, employees yelling and goofing around with each other the whole time, some real bad attitudes from a couple of them, just a circus atmosphere that makes it very inefficient. I've been here twice, and both times the place had maybe one or two other people in it, and it still took forever because of a complete lack of discipline behind the counter. read more
