Stopped by here before going to the Savers next door. It was noon on a saturday and not too busy but busy enough! I was able to grab a booth to myself and there were still 2 more open. I just got a plain cheeseburger combo and it was out pretty quickly. It's just a simple burger and it was tasty! I shouldve added lettuce - but i liked it. seasoned well! fries were yummy too. Staff was very friendly and the place just looks like a diner people have been coming to for years - in a good way! I saw a few people that seemed like regulars and they were chatting with staff. They have condiments up front for everyone to grab to the side of the register. They have bathrooms - single stalls and although it's nice to have them its the kind where I just dont feel very clean when using it. I used to ride around La Mirada on my 10 speed back in the early 2000s when I was just a kid. My dad always told me that I wasn't allowed to go to "the hamburger stand". He was fine with me playing IN the riverbed with no shoes. He was fine with me bringing home a jar of tadpoles that turned out to be mosquito larvae. He was even fine with me going into the bar across the street to play N.A.R.C. at the arcade inside. But for some reason "the hamburger stand" just rubbed him the wrong way. I was not a bad kid or a rebel and I was never looking to offend or upset anybody but one day I went to Jimmy's! Being that I was 11 years old and walking into a restaurant full of adults I got some puzzled looks in my direction. They were probably looking for the adult I was with. I didn't know what to do so I just sat down in a booth and, we'll, sat in it. That's all I did for about 30 seconds (30 seconds in kid time is 38 years mind you). A very nice older man came from around the counter and took the seat across from me. He smiled and said hello and introduced himself. He had been working there for "a looong time" he said with an accent. I looked at my shoes. He told me that in a restaurant like the one I was in people go up to the counter to place an order. I nodded and started scooting my way out of the booth. He stopped me and said that the kids my age that he sees come in are with an adult and he was wondering were my parents were. I told him my dad was cutting the grass in the front yard and my mom was napping with my sister whom was just a little baby. He asked if I knew my home phone number and I nodded yes. Then he asked how far I lived from there and I told him "near the riverbed". He laughed. He asked how I got there and I pointed to my bike which was laying in a heap slightly blocking the entrance in a childlike manner. He asked if I was hungry and I nodded yes. He asked if I had any money and I said yes and dug in the pockets of my Old Navy cargo pants for the $2.25 I had been "collecting" (I would look in our couch cushions for change or I would look in my older brothers car that didn't lock and steal his pennies and nickels or my older sisters room. But mostly I would scour the sidewalks and gutters for any form of money) I put the change on the table and he counted it out loud. He smiled and said wait here. I did. When he came back he had with him the biggest burger my child eyes had ever seen! It was the size of my head. Bigger than my head! Up until that point I always had my parents order me a plain cheeseburger with nothing on it except mustard, catsup, and cheese! This Jimmy's burger had lettuce, tomato, raw onions, and pickles as well as a dinosaur burger patty and American cheese....I ate half. I couldn't finish it but it was the best burger I had ever had. The grilled taste of the meat is an experience, a moment in time, that I can't get back or recreate no matter how hard I hustle. The nice man didn't take my money or call my parents or the cops. All he asked for in return was for me to move my bike out of the foyer and into the bike rack outside. We exchanged names but it's been 30 years and a lot of liquid diamonds OG and I've since forgotten his name. I'm surprised I still remember mine actually.
