There is another Jamaican place just a few blocks south of Jiallo's called Jamaican Style Jerk. I drive by this place frequently as it's right down the street from my house and if you blink you may just drive right by and not know it. It's tucked back in the corner of a strip mall at 79th St. and Michigan Rd right next to the Tite Barn for more reference. Once you walk in you go to the counter and place your order, pay, and have a seat. I'm not sure if you have a big group if you would still order at the counter. The lady at the counter was super friendly and explained a few dishes I was unsure of. I went with the jerk chicken, jollof rice, and fried plantains and was told it would be about 15 mins. I think I waited less than 10 mins which was nice surprise. Once I received my food and habout 5 mins or so to let it cool and get a few good bites in they checked on me to see if I needed anything. I must have come on an off day. My expectations were a bit high. I had received great reviews and recommendations for this place; but at my visit all the hype came crashing down. When I walked in, there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. I wondered if they were open. But nonetheless the young lady seated us and began to wait on our table. I began to order some dishes and it felt like everything I asked for they were out of. No beef patties. No curry chicken. I can't remember the other thing, but there were at least two or three things that were not available that were on the menu. When the food did come, it was too spicy. And that could just be because of my meager American taste buds. I know in Caribbean cuisine things are usually a bit heated, but this was really unbearable. We couldn't really eat the food it was so spicy. We ended up bearing through it (didn't want to waste food and money) and eating it but it didn't even really taste good. The vegetables and rice were so bland; I guess they concentrated on seasoning the meat, they forgot the vegetables. When it came time to pay, the young lady was awkward there too. I'm not sure if she was trained as a waitress or what. Normally what happens is, they give you the check and then they walk away and come back a few minutes later. This is truly a gem on the Westside of Indianapolis within the culturally diverse International Marketplace. I stopped here for a late lunch on my day off and after contemplating the many choices offered I decided to go with the jerk chicken dinner with jollof rice and fried plantains as my sides with a delicious byssop (sweet hibiscus drink). The dining area was clean and the hostess was patient and helpful as I came to my decision. They restaurant has a lot of good options to choose from but would recommend the dinner portions if you have a bigger appetite. I took my order to go and would suggest getting the byssop w/o ice (ice will be in a separate cup) because once you take a sip of it you are gonna want all you can get. I used to love this place when they first opened years ago. They had the tastiest Jerk chicken!! The owner set up a dinner for my food club I had and we dined like kings and queens!! Try the Hibiscus juice; really delicious. I travel for a living, so All I do is eat at restaurants. On my life! I've NEVER received service as awful as I did tonight. Something told me to leave after standing at the register apx 7m and no one showed. However, I was craving ox tails and the place just south of this one was out . A couple and a woman were sitting so I asked "have y'all been waiting long?" Yes apx 15m "after ordering? ok thanks " A couple minutes later a guy comes out with containers of food. Sits them on the counter opens them and tells the woman this is her order . She sd No I ordered xyz so he repeats the wrong order again she walks over looks and tells him again what she ordered. He disappeared to the back come out wit her food (this is relevant) Fast forward, ....now he finally acknowledges me. I order directly off the menu no substitutions. He tells me I can only pick one side (which I did when I ordered initially) so I shut up let him continue to talk, smiled and said cabbage cause he was making it unnecessarily difficult. I pay an wait. Now my food is out. I check because he had been calling the wrong Ofer's to customers. He push the container in front of me open it and say jerk chicken. "No, I ordered ox tails" he gives me the 2nd container. I'm hungry so I grab one of their forks wrapped in a napkin. I open the container and see 2 thin oxtail bones ‍ so I ask "is this all I get for $25?" The guy say let me ask Jiallo. A regular customer says talk to the owner he's nice, he'll make it right. So a guy(later identified as the owner) walks up and I ask again. He said that's more than two bones, so I picked the oxtails up with the fork put them on the napkin and show him I only have two bones a bed of rice beans and cabbage. So he proceeds to call himself educating me on the cost of ox tails and the fact that I can't go anywhere in Indianapolis and get more ox tails for this price. He then asked if I wanted it I said no. The entire time he's talking I'm quiet I'm looking at him but he's badgering me and I'm still quiet because you can't ask me a question and don't give me the opportunity to answer you. He went to the register he asked if I paid by card or cash I said Apple Pay. I then took a picture of the food because I was going to post it on my Facebook page which basically has close friends and family. The owner then got upset and started accusing me of touching the food and said he wasn't going to refund me because I was taking pictures of the food. By this time I'm getting really frustrated but I'm still quiet so I delete the photos because he said that was the only way he would give me my money back. he then accused me of saving the photos to another part of my phone I told him I don't know what he's talking about but if he will walk me through it I will be more than happy to delete those as well. Now he's raising his voice and talking crazy and I'm getting shitty but I keep my composure. So now the 1st guy is telling me to just take the food and they will make it right the next time I come. So the owner continues to talk crazy to me I continue to stand there and stare at him . Finally everyone leaves the restaurant and it's just the two of us and I just continue to repeat I would like my money back please. His whole demeanor changes, and he says I do not know how to refund on Apple Pay I will give you cash I will throw this food away and I will go make you some more oxtails. I declined his offer multiple times he kept over talking me and wouldn't allow me to finish a sentence so now I'm feeling like a hostage because all I want is my money back so I can leave and go get food because now it's getting late I've lost 40 minutes of my life I can't get back restaurants are now closing and I'm still hungry. I enjoyed my visit to this clean and inviting place on 38th Street. It is located on the north side of 38th between Moller & Georgetown at Kevin Way. There's a stoplight making it easy to get across traffic and if you make an immediate right on Kevin Way in front of the Planet Fitness, you can drive straight to this bright yellow restaurant. Although it is elevated with several steps to climb, there is a ramp for those who need it. Inside is quite open and spacious. I was seated at one of the raised booths (They do have some tables located in a section that do not require stepping up.) The hostess/waitress was pleasant and efficient. She took my order and within about twelve minutes, I had my small order of Jerk Chicken. Wow! The flavor was fantastic! I got eight small wing halves served wet with lots of napkins. The had a built in heat, but not overwhelming. They also had a nice tangy flavor that was similar to a barbecue sauce, but with a bit of additional spice to lift it to another level. Definitely try these if you visit! I also tried a housemade sweet drink called Byssop that is made from hibiscus flowers. The drink is very sweet for someone who doesn't drink soda. Once I got passed the initial blast of sweet, I adjusted my expectations and noted that it was both fruity and floral. The deep reddish violet color was appealing and the beverage, served over ice, was transparent. Note that an order of the beverage does not come with refills. My main course was from the dinner menu: Oxtail stew which comes with a couple side courses. The stew is made with tail meat which is "bone-in" and floats in a dark brown gravy with stewed carrot chunks. The gravy can be eaten like soup, but note that you may get pieces of thyme stem as I found several lengths in mine. The carrots were tender and tasty. The beef itself was very tender, but because it is submerged in the gravy, becomes difficult to cut off the bone. I suggest asking for an additional small plate that could be used as a cutting board. Good taste, but not a "wow" combination. The only real disappointment was from the sides. I got the mixed veggies since my meal was meat laden. The veggies were colorful, but thoroughly cooked, so they were limp and not as flavorful as I hoped. The Jallof rice was served in great abundance, probably close to three cups worth! The rice was a bit overcooked and had become dry. I probably could have added some of it to the gravy from the stew, but I didn't. The rice, though bright orange in color, was a bit on the bland side as well. I believe they add tomato and onion (traditionally), but any pieces included were unnoticeable. So, like many restaurants that are open all day, you have to choose carefully to get the best flavor for your dollar. Definitely try the wings and if you like sweet drinks, get the Byssop. I remember being mindblown by the peanut chicken in 2012 and it was every bit as amazing this year! We also got the jerk chicken wings this time, and those were amazing as well. So after months and months of passing this place. I finally gave them chance, and man was I lucky that I did! I called in my order ahead of time for pick-up after looking at the menus that customers posted here on Yelp. The menu that the link goes to is not for the 38th Street location. Anywho, I called, and the girl that took my order was very friendly and professional while taking my order. My food was ready and waiting for me at the front counter when I arrived. I was able to the lovely young lady who took my order. She opened up each dinner that I ordered in order for me to check it to make sure it was all there. My order was perfect, and smelled and looked amazing! I couldn't wait to get home to rip into our beautifully prepared meals. I ordered the Beef Jerk Ribs with Jollof rice & Plantains. My boyfriend ordered the Oxtail Stew with Beans & Rice and Plantains. We also ordered the small order of Jerk Chicken Wings from their appetizer menu. After taking one bite, I wanted to smack myself for waiting so long to eat here. It was AMAZING! The food was very flavorful, and the portions were huge. We shared our meals with eachother, and still have plenty left over. The only reason why I didn't rate them at 5 stars is due to the lack of green vegetables on the menu, the Jerk wings were good, but they had a sauce that was more of a spicy barbecue, rather than the traditional spicy dry rubbed jerk chicken that I was hoping for. WOW! I can't believe I've been coming to Jiallo's for so many years now. Before I even moved to Indianapolis my family and I would travel from Fort Wayne just to eat at Jiallo's. However at this time they were located off West 56th street and Guion road. Since then they have upgraded to a beautiful building off west 38th street. I really like the food and staff. The food is always hot! The jerk chicken is my absolute favorite. I've tried other entrees, but the jerk is just the best in my opinion. The owner is very nice as well. He will go around and talk to all the customers. I think that is a good way to keep people coming back and to get feedback. Above all the new restaurant is very spacious and clean.
