Ji Bei Chuan is the latest to take over what locals call a "cursed" location for not being able to stay in business. I came in skeptical, but left mostly pleasantly surprised. I have no idea what was there before, but the interior is giving disco karaoke night with colored lights and music videos looping on the TVs. It's a vibe. Service was attentive enough, and the food was surprisingly authentic. We started strong with the cucumber salad and wood ear mushrooms--both solid. I've never seen a cucumber salad served with lemon wedges, but the chili oil carried. The scallion pancakes were probably my favorite--thin, crispy, and exactly how I like them (a personal preference, but still). The garlic green beans had the only acceptable amount of garlic: a metric ton. The beef rolls were flavorful and satisfying. The beef noodle soup came with a lighter broth--not my favorite style, but still comforting. If they're still around next time I'm in town, I'd come back to try the soup dumplings. Ugh. I'm so sad. They've gotten shut down due to a vermin infestation. Many folks have posted on Reddit and Facebook about concerns. While I stand by my own experiences, it does look like there are serious issues. I wish the best of luck to them. Perhaps they can address the issues and return. read more

Great menu! I love that Chico has a place like this. I love being able to order different item that aren't commonly found in this area, like steamed pork buns, shumai, and scallion pancakes. We liked everything we got, but there was definitely a lack of flavor. It looked really good when opening it, but the noodles just didn't have a big taste like I was hoping. Came through Chico and decided to check out this highly rated place. Ambiance is so very nice. Served was great and food was fantastic. The Tom Yum soup was quite spicy, almost too much for us. Made our way to Chico today to try the new ramen and dumpling spot. We shared 3 dishes, the tonkatsu ramen, the spicy crispy chicken and pork soup dumplings. New in town so we're going to wait a few more weeks to try the duck. Hope they stick around because this place has gotten more facelift than who knows. Visited Ji Bei Chuan today. What caught my eye upon entering was the way it was decorated on the inside. It gave it a very authentic feel. Our service and staff was excellent and I can appreciate their uniform as it looks very comfortable. They also had a karaoke area with a giant mic (which isn't the mic people use, it is used as a prop.. I asked). I ordered a Passionfruit Bobo which was delicious, a little sweet for my palette but very tasty. My soup came out on a tray with a spoon for the broth, which was very cute, and it added to the decor and aesthetic of the restaurant. I ordered a Tonkatsu Ramen which was delicious! The broth tasted house made, it was flavorful and rich but it sat light as to not be very over saturated or too fatty tasting, but just right. The pork was SO GOOD, I don't know what or how it was marinated in but the flavor was very distinct, and it tied in very nicely with the other flavors in the broth and ingredients. In hindsight I would've added mushrooms, which is an option (for an additional fee, I didn't look). All in all, I can confidently say I'll be returning to try their other menu items. It is (in my opinion) one of the better ramen options in Chico. read more

We saw a cockroach crawling under our chairs while waiting on food, which was super bland and needed lots of soy sauce to taste like anything. Plus, the noodles were spaghetti noodles, not rice noodles. My mom who can't have gluten ordered rice noodles and could tell immediately. Staff was really nice but we won't be back. read more

Came in with my partner a week or so after the reopening/rebrand of fortune dumpling. So thankful they kept their dumplings which are consistently a highlight for us. We got the beef dumplings (tons of flavor), wontons in spicy chili oil, shrimp dumplings (nice chewy outside), shu mai, and tried some of their new noodle dishes. Both noodle plates lacked flavor and we definitely wouldn't get again. Hope it was just an off day or them just getting used to the new menu. When we came in they were giving out free boba milk teas and a sample of their spicy cucumber salad which was nice and refreshing. Loved that they were playing pokemon on the tvs and hope they stay in business for the dumplings and such friendly staff alone. read more

Not to be critical of the staff on shift during our visit, but the ordering was difficult with the waitperson (we spoke in our respective languages English/Mandarin). The dishes were delicious but not what was ordered (I used the phone to document the appetizers and entrees selected and compared that to the items brought out: 2 of six were incorrect). The hostess/cashier was gracious and explanatory of the short handed staff situation, and corrected the check satisfactorily. All in all, not a totally unpleasant experience, however, the staffing is, after all, what drives the desirability of a new venue, and this example of a new restaurant's presentation was disappointing. The younger staff members appeared to be doing the best they could under the circumstances. This is the fourth establishment in this building over my year 20 residency in Chico, and I sincerely wish Ji Bei Chuan nothing but the best of luck. A second visit may be ventured in the future to see if service/accuracy has improved. First time here, family of four with two kids. Service was horrible. Once we ordered we were never checked on or drinks filled. Soda machine broke, nothing to drink but water. The broth was creamy and flavorful without being too salty, noodles had the perfect bite, and the pork basically melted in my mouth. Paired it with a boba tea that was smooth and not overly sweet, with pearls that were perfectly chewy. Together, it was the perfect combo -- hearty, tasty, and super satisfying.
