Got extremely sick the day after from the hot and sour soup. Was really excited to try this place too...

This place has been known for serving old, bland food for years. They even water down their sweet and sour sauce, I assume to make it stretch longer but it's very noticeable. I can smell the old rotten meat in their dumpster all the way from the parking lot. As for the inside, it's not temperature controlled, so get ready to either sweat through your meal or bring a heavy jacket depending on the time of year. Just go to Happy Garden! The food was absolutely amazing. I had Huangs chicken, and it was just enough spice to clear the sinuses without scorching the tongue. 10/10 on the food. What we got was great, butnit was sweltering in there, and instead of relaxing and then ordering dessert we barely at 10% of our dishes as we were sweating too much to enjoy anything. We left before any other patrons who were there before us, because it was almost 80 in there (we could see what the ac was set at from out table) and 100 outside. Their Hot and sour soup is a thin flavorless overly peppery thickened water with just egg strands and tofu and nothing else. One pencil eraser-sized shred of what looked like mushroom. No julienned carrots, no wood ear mushrooms, no shitake strips, something resembling a piece of lily bud cooked into a mushy strand. They scaled back on everything but the water. read more

Soooo good! Hong Kong style noodles are the best ever. I grew up eating in SF Chinatown regularly and these are BETTER!!! For whatever reason it seems like Gingers wasn't as good for a while there but I can assure you they have made a full recovery. Best Chinese food. Give them another try. Came a second time, this time for takeout. 10/10 again ate every last bite. Super hot and fresh still even after I got it home. I love their food. Order was ready in a short amount of time. They are open reasonable hours and have decent size portions Service: The servers here are always professional and quick. Could definitely throw a smile in there here and there, but I won't complain too much. Food: Fried Rice - I am not a big fan of their fried rice. I've eaten here about 5 times now and their fried rice has always been too dry. It almost feels like they left it under the heat lamp for too long Chow Mein - This is my favorite thing about this restaurant. I think their noodles are flavorful and chewy. Paired with some broccoli beef or kung pao chicken... yum! Egg Rolls - Their lunch special usually comes with one egg roll which I always demolish first cause it's crispy and packed full of flavor Egg Flower Soup - I prefer this over the hot sour soup since it's always packed full of egg. I ordered Kings Beef & Also a combination dinner platter of Kung Pao Chicken over the phone. Whoever answered was very polite and thanked me for ordering which i appreciated. The combination came with Soup, Rice, Low Mein, an Egg Roll AND a crab ragoon WITH the entree. That's literally amazing. Never have i gotten so many things in a combination deal. That to me was sooo worth it. The Kings beef was deep fried that was pretty spicy! Maybe only a king will survive. It was noted as spicy but it definitely gives you a kick. I got my food to go and by the time i got home (15 min drive) everything was still hot. Even the soup was good! Thank you guys! Had the Singapore Rice Noodles which don't come with any extras. Basically tasteless and dry. Menu says combination of shrimp, pork, slices of chicken breast flavored with curry sauce. Couldn't taste the sauce and couldn't find more than a couple of the combination items. Do not recommend. read more

I generally follow the adage that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all, but I feel I need to make an exception here for other out-of-towners who find themselves looking for Chinese food while in Chico. I ordered the Combination Lo Mein, Kung Pao Beef, White Rice, and Spring Rolls. The Lo Mein and Spring Rolls were OK, but both were on the bland side, and the Lo Mein, which was supposed to have beef, chicken, and shrimp, had very little of any of them. My real "beef," if you will, is with the Kung Pao Beef and the White Rice. When I opened the Kung Pao Beef, I saw that the peanuts, which appeared to be the dry roasted type, were just sprinkled on top rather than being mixed in. Also, there were no chile peppers at all - a first for me, and the sauce tasted like Frank's Red Hot Chicken Wing Sauce had been splashed in for flavor. The worst, however, was the white rice which was like glue. I was unable to separate the kernels even by stirring them in the sauce with my chop sticks. On the plus side, my take out order was ready quickly, and the staff was friendly. I hope others have a better experience than I did, but it's hard to forgive or forget a Chinese restaurant that can't cook rice. read more

Well to start off I am a die hard Happy Garden fan. Ive been going pretty much my whole life and family has been going as well. After cutting a Christmas tree my husband and I found ourselves craving Chinese food. Looked up Happy Garden and they were closed (monday) so we reluctantly decided to try a new place. This place blows other Chinese food in Chico out of the water. Chow mein has chewy, flavorful noodles, beef and broccoli incredible flavor and huge amounts of tender beef and the sweet and sour pork so tender and breading that actually sticks to the pieces. Quantities and quality for an amazing price so consider us new fans and will be back for sure! read more

This place surprised me. I'll be honest, we quit going here for a couple of years because it got so bad. Only reason I ordered it was because a friend said they're back to the way they used to be. I ordered on Door Dash and the food was hot, fresh and quality ingredients. I ordered the Orange chicken, Hong Kong style chow mein, egg rolls and BBQ pork. Pretty good Chinese food at reasonable prices. Very nice employees. Both take out and sit down service. Clean restaurant. Singapore rice noodles were good. A bit too many onions. Sesame chicken very good. Mongolian beef was mainly an onion dish with some beef. Not recommended unless you totally love onions a lot and don't care that you'll get a small amount of very dry beef with it. The onions tasted good however some many onions is not we had expected to get. Coconut curry vegetables were excellent. Overall the food was a 3 1/2 however I'm rating them a 4 due to their wonderful employees. read more
