I frequent all the comic stores in Phoenix. Some good back issues are to be had here but the staff are very crusty at times. There was a super friendly dude who used to work here but haven't seen him in ages. Now just kinda cranky people. Loved spending time with My Son playing amazing throwback arcade games as well as speaking to Danny and getting to know the history behind some of the items in the store. Great selection on just about everything you're looking for in the comic book world and also the arcade and collectibles shop that is open on the weekends there is amazing as well. Both owners of the comic shop and collectibles side are both great guys that look out for the customers best interests. I highly recommend checking it out. So I had a chance to speak with Jesse... He's a nice guy, has quite an impressive inventory: not only are there thousands upon thousands of back issues to rummage through, there's somewhat of a classic arcade games cemetery resting peacefully in the next showroom. (I hadn't asked if they were to be sold or if, in fact, the intent was to bring them back to life, have them made available for anyone with a pocketful of quarters. Maybe it's both.) For the meantime, though, I'd come just to check out the comics selection, specifically new releases...which at the moment, Jesse James hadn't stocked. Per Jesse, pedaling back issues was his immediate focus. And that's great! I love coming to a shop and digging around and sifting through rows of long boxes, when I have the time. It's fun to just see what's lying around. While I certainly don't expect to find anything key--by the time I stroll in, everything's been cherry-picked, I'm sure--but nonetheless, it's fun. Just filling in a few gaps, perhaps, and coming across something I hadn't expected is part of the intrigue, I suppose. And the back issues, by the way, they're all a dollar, every single one of them! And that's wonderful, but it is so exhaustingly difficult to navigate through the inventory, as nothing's really all that organized. Jesse'd said that he's in the middle of a remodel, and that's certainly understandable, but it's not helpful, especially when I have money to burn, and I've had to walk out empty-handed. I have faith in Jesse James Comics though. It'll come around eventually. read more

Different location from the last time I shopped their comic book store. Same great experience. Tons of comic books, graphic novels, games, toys. Expanded gaming area to hold large card tournaments, etc. Open earlier and open later than most other comic book stores. This visit, I found a stack full of reasonably priced books. Very, very happy. Dave was very helpful with my selections. Support your local businesses especially the good ones. When it comes to comic book stores. Jesse James is one of the best on the whole planet. Kind of bummed out that this place doesn't have better rating. I have been to quite a few comic shops and granted this isn't the nicest or most organized in the valley but the staff is pretty amazing. Maxine is always so sweet and knowledgeable about the products she sells. Just adore that lady!!! This kids come here to play their CCGs and they always have a great time and get some reading in between matches... Prices for everything here are very reasonable. Lots of little knickknacks. An amazingly supportive comic book store to the arts community here in Phoenix. I am a film producer and talent agent, and Jesse James comics has always went out of their way to be accommodating when it came to hosting events, castings, and photo shoots. The store seems to be really popular with people of all ages. I see grandmothers buying stuff for their grandkids and middle age guys and kids buying comics, collectibles and more. It took me two months after the grand opening of this store to actually stop inside and check the place out. Why? The preconceived notion that a new comic store will be full of crap. When a small business opens in the corner of a flailing shopping center, you hope for helpful employees and a friendly atmosphere. The selection in this type of store normally leaves something to be desired. A new comic book store with a worthwhile selection is even harder to find, considering thousands of comics are produced yearly. But what if you came across a store that not only had helpful workers, but also one that optimized space and had a wider variety than most thriving comic stores? This is Jesse James Comics in a nutshell. In such a seemingly small space, they managed to fit dozens of standalone display shelves without minimizing walking space. There is a room connected to the main store area that has a couch and a TV that always has a movie playing. Figures, boxed and unboxed, are displayed throughout the store with prices clearly marked on the backs. They also have a relatively small manga section, with titles ranging from common to out-of-print. The store owner, who was working both times I visited, seems to know about almost everything the store carries. What makes the store so special is that this location is not a lone island. The owner also has a space on the other end of the shopping center, which houses countless boxes of comics, figures, and manga that wouldn't fit into the store itself. When you request an item not found in the store, the owner will check this "warehouse" before ordering from his wholesaler. Overall, the prices are decent, the employees are phenomenal, and the selection is the best I've found in Phoenix. I highly recommend this shop to any comic book geek or manga fanatic in the area! read more

Okay, here's how Free Comic Book Day is supposed to work: You have a table full of the year's free comics readily and easily accessible and identifiable right at or near the entrance. You do NOT hide them away in some obscure unmarked back room completely surrounded by non-FCBD books which does nothing but make someone checking the room out after looking over every nook and crany of the bloody store think "Frell! They're not in here either!" Then upon having looked over the entire store an additional four times before finally spotting one of the FCDB and realizing this is supposed to be the spot, there should be much more than about four of the FIFTY FCBD comic titles available. I mean, I know that every other day of the year, you strive to make the inability to find anything easily in your store into some kind of demented art form but really? You have to ruin FCBD just to keep up your image of chaotic random disorganized cluelessness? There needs to be some kind of law that only ACTUAL comic book stores can participate in Free Comic Book Day and Jesse James Comics is NOT a real comic book store - they're a torture chamber straight out of the deepest darkest pits of Hell merely designed to look like a comic book store in order to lure in unsuspecting innocent passers-by. Maybe the store owners are trying for that whole "It's-so-bad-it's-oddly-entertaining-in-a-camp-value-kind-of-way" vibe. But it's not working. They're more of the It's-so-bad-I-would-rather-be-trapped-in-an-all-day-Bruce-Willis-and-Don-Jonson-revive-their-singing-career-concert-than-spend-more-than-five-minutes-in-this-place variety. It's truly a shame that such wonderful truly well-run comic shops like Hero Comics and Atomic Comics have closed while this catastrophe remains in business - kind of like the cockroaches left after the rest of civilization has been destroyed by nuclear annihilation. Whether it's Free Comic Book Day or any other day of the year, before you even entertain the slightest possibility of wasting your time visiting this place, bear in mind there are far more entertaining and worthwhile ways to spend your day - such as having your teeth drilled or alphabetizing your laundry lint. If I had any doubts before, I can now confirm that (second only to Papa John's Pizza) Jesse James Comics is the Worst Business in the entire Valley. read more

this place is pretty cool and the staff is very nice they have an awesome arcade. i havnt played the game personally but just a nice touch to kind of be creative i. your own way. she i first went to this place they asked me "are you looking for anything specific?" i replied "i'm looking for Nightwing Rebirth comics" they said that they weren't gonna have a lot since they just started selling DC comics a few years ago. (which is fine Marvel is super popular so i understood) they do have a HUGE selection of u organized comics. probably somewhere between 80-100 long boxes. and if your a huge comic fan like me you actually look through that stuff just to find that gem you've been looking for ever. they have all the new dc stuff. it was the closest shop to me so i would pick up newer items from there occasionally! staff is really nice read more

As a long time reader and collector, I brought my daughter in for her first comic book store experience and she had a great time! Jesse Criscone, the owner, is an amazing guy that will have a real conversation with you. He also donated comics for an exhibition so kids can enjoy free comics. JJ's Comics is an awesome little shop. Nicely priced top-loaders and a table full of "The Walking Dead" comics make this place my go-to spot. Not a huge MTG card collection, but they have boosters and accessories. The asian lady at the counter is super friendy and recognized us the second time we were in the shop. read more

Large selection of current and not so current comic books. Biggest comic book store I know of. Great customer service, frequent sales, and they just expanded their inventory. I just spent an hour in the treasure hunt room. I found Roger Rabbit, a Miyazaki manga, and some other Marvel titles. I've even seen a Girl Scout troop have a meeting here. Community friendly. They are so nice and always greet me and know how to help and have my comics ready before I ask. Let me start off by saying I'm a huge comic book fan & have always loved mom n pop type stores that focus on the consumer unlike atomic comics did. With that said I decided to check Jesse James comics out , the store was a mess ,the comics I was searching for were scattered all over the store ; it was like trying to find Waldo . I decided to ask for help , there's a toy shop that's connected to the comic store so I thought it was the same store and asked the attendee where I could find a comic . He was way to busy playing a transformers game to help so he shouted across the store for help :-/ finally I was pointed out to a poorly stalked dead pool section. I still bought a comic book that retailed 29.99 just to show I was a paying customer. I hope this store thrives & keeps its loyal customers but unfortunately they lost this avid comic buyer read more

Typically, we love it here. A very relaxed atmosphere provides a welcoming experience to avid comic lovers. But after today's interaction I question if we'll go back. David, one of the associates on the floor, approached us in a huff to let us know "You can't just read the books. You're damaging them by reading them, you have to buy it or leave." We felt like scolded children. Thing is, we were considering purchasing the books, as well as several other comics. We weren't the only ones in the shop at the time enjoying a look around, but I guess we weren't welcome- despite previewing books in the past before purchase. He continued to stare at us as we gathered our things and openly roll his eyes. We've been there while the owner is on duty and he was never so rude to us, and even as we went back up to David to ask why he felt the need to behave this way, he told us "maybe try buying the book" in an extremely condescending way. I guess we'll just head over to Drawn To Comics from now on. read more
