An independent contractor diagnosed that my system didn't have any refrigerant left due to a leak in the evaporator coil. Since the coil was still under warranty, he recommended having this fixed by a manufacturer-certified company. Climate Control Systems was the closest, so I gave them a call. They had a tech in the area who they sent out. I was happy given 2 weeks of 90+ degree weather in the forecast. They charged one fixed fee for coming out and another one for diagnosing the issue. I was fine with that since those charges are common and I understood that they wanted to confirm the root cause before giving me a binding quote. The tech arrived within an hour, was friendly and knowledgeable, confirming the leak. He mentioned that this will be expensive since the refrigerant (R410a) I need has been replaced with a newer formula and therefore is now $192 per pound. Within an hour I had my quote from their office. $2,600, split evenly between labor and the refrigerant refill. In the meantime, I did some research and found out that the wholesale price for R410a is between $9 and $11 per pound, that's what Climate Control Services pays for it. I gladly rejected the quote. This is the 2nd time I had to replace the evaporator coil, exact same repair 2 years ago; it took the tech about 5h back then. Since parts are covered under warranty, all of the $2,600 minus $120 for the refrigerant, would go to Climate Control Services. This translates to roughly $500/h. I understand there is overhead running a business, but what infuriated me is the dishonesty of blaming a nonexistent price increase for the refrigerant to get to what they want to charge. In the end, another certified contractor got the job done for a little more than half what Climate Control Services quoted me. To my initial comment about the trade in general: on my hunt for a "non-insane" quote, I came across other contractors who charge even more for refrigerant. My advice, if your repair involves refrigerant refill or partially recharging your system, ask for the refrigerant price and you'll get a good idea of how ethical they are. I didn't give them 1 star because they were very responsive and the tech who came out was nice and knowledgeable. Other than that, hard pass for me.
