I don't go to Kohl's anymore, so this is the only department store I occasionally frequent. I've been coming here for years, since I was a little boy! Now, the store feels a little behind the times - it needs a major upgrade if it's going to continue to be around in the future. Their selection of clothing is still pretty varied - have a lot of excellent men's dress attire, activewear, etc. They also offer home décor and other items like towels, bedding, etc. I agree that occasionally wait times at registers can be ridiculously long. At this point, why not try self-checkout? Sephora is here too, but I wouldn't ever use it because I'm a man. And the store is extremely lively and pleasant to frequent during the holiday season with the Christmas music playing, the decorations, the customers walking around the store looking for gifts, etc. Anyway, this is still a great department store for this city. read more

If I could give zero stars to the JCPenney Salon, I absolutely would. This was by far the worst customer service experience I've ever had at a salon. I paid to have my hair dyed, and it came out extremely patchy and uneven. Even the esthetician who did the service admitted out of her own mouth that I shouldn't have had to pay for such a poor result. Despite that, the salon manager refused to fix or redo the color to remedy the issue. What made the experience even worse is that I was still charged full price for a service that was clearly done incorrectly. There was no accountability and no effort to correct the mistake. Much cleaner over the last couple of years - management changes in all of the right ways. Customer service is significantly better than most other clothing stores in the area. Its weird to see people using the yelp hours - instead of the hours posted literally on the door of the building - which greatly differs than the hours posted on Yelp. But hey - as long as you're observant, and can read the hours on the sign, you'll never have to worry about getting kicked out after hours. read more

Hi I was really excited about getting my therapy massage gun. My sister and I searched for it for the longest time before asking for help. I found one but it was the wrong one. They had one on sale for $29.00 so that's the one I wanted. I headed upstairs to see if I could find it upstairs. Well after searching I asked the person working the register if she might know where they were. She looked at me and said I have no idea. I said okay I said well can you give me a rough idea as to where they might be. She again said I have no idea and turned to another customer. I said okay and proceeded to walk back downstairs. As I was walking I saw an employee folding clothes. I let her know what I was looking for and she said oh I think those are upstairs, I said yes, I already tried to find them to no avail. She was very responsive and said she would go and look for me. When she returned she had the one I had found before, I said oh that's the one I had found, but it's $195.00. She said no worries let me look in the computer. She saw that it showed they had them in stock so she was going to go and take a second look. I was very happy when I saw her come with 3 of them. She gave me my choice of colors. You know she completely turned things around for me as far as my shopping experience. I asked her name and she said it was Ashleigh. I thanked her for all her help and told her she was awesome. I completed a survey on line that I saw on my receipt, but it didn't give me the opportunity to mention this employees name. Had my ring for a little while, when I noticed a crack in the diamond and along the foundation (not sure if it was there before or if it was by my doing), so we had it sent out for repair. It took a whole month as they shipped it out vs fixing it on-site and when it came back, it was NOT repaired. They "let me keep it," for my wedding day and then I immediately sent it back out for repair, the following day. The woman behind the counter, said she would personally fix it herself, on-site, yet somehow it was shipped off, again, without my knowledge. It was due back the 20th of last month and still has yet to arrive. That's an additional 3 weeks AND STILL counting. Absolutely ridiculous. Every time we call to check or walk in to check or inquire as to the status of it, we are met with the same answers EACH TIME. "Oh, they're behind I guess, but we will be sure to call you when it is here," without any additional information, not even when I was trying to ask if there was a way to track the ring itself, or to speak with those who were supposed to be handling and fixing it. Extremely disappointed in the lack of communication and care for a paying customer. I am disappointed for my husband who spent a lot of time, money and energy into making this dream ring a reality for me and I am beyond frustrated that it's now been off My hand and who knows where, for longer than I've had it on my hand, or have been married. Someone needs to take charge and get it figured out, because stuff like this, shouldn't happen. Especially as a store that is slowly going out of business. I was at Kay Jewelers 4 times before I came into JCPennies and I am so happy I did. I was looking for a gold chain and was fed up with the service I had gotten everywhere else. Lucky for me Stacy Givens was working the department this night. It was 7:30pm when I came in and they close at 8pm. She was already looking for what I had asked for on the phone. She was so helpful and friendly and pleasant that I am canceling all my previous orders from Kay so I can get them through JCPennies instead. I loved her help and the chain I selected with her help. This is for JC Penney.com! Apparently they will ship your items to ANY of their stores without you being able to change the location!!!! I called customer service when I noticed the order I JUST placed was going to a store 2 hrs away!! I called to have them change it to Chico and she said that she couldn't change it that I had to wait till it was delivered to the other store and THEN call and have them transfer it to the Chico store!!!!! This is terrible customer service! I will NEVER shop their .com AGAIN!! UPDATE! My item was delivered to the wrong store and I called them to have it transferred to Chico. (as told to do per customer service) and NOW I'm told they can't transfer my items that they will refund my money and I would need to repurchase the items!!! This place sort of feels archaic, everything needs a major facelift; I'm not sure how they're surviving, to be honest. The selection in the store is just middle ground, definitely a lot more available online. What is very inconvenient here, to me, is where the order pick up is located. I've ordered online and used pickup twice and both times the pick up counter is upstairs and hard to get to. Pick up was in different areas both times which just added to the confusion. I don't remember seeing any obvious or very helpful signs leading me to it either. The current pick up counter is downright sad: old counters, very worn carpet, ugly back wall, everything is just yuck. I won't use pick up again, by the time you find a parking spot at the mall, walk aaaalllll the way to the store, through the store, ho the escalators and play hide and seek trying to find the current pick up counter you may as well have just had it shipped to your home. read more

The Sephora should receive 0 stars. They lack all customer service etiquette all of the time. I've never been here and had a pleasant experience. I can never get an associate to help me when I need it. Checkout takes so long! The staff acts as if it's the worst thing when you finally catch them and ask a question. I had one recommendation on a product and that product fell apart and was unusable. They wouldn't allow me to return it because it didn't happen in the store.... I don't put my makeup on in your store. I use it at home. If you recommend a product to me and it breaks the next day, you should allow your customers to return it. Especially when it costs $50. Now I am stuck with a compact that fell out of its case and smashed into a million pieces all over the floor. JCPenny would get 4 stars as I've generally had pleasant experiences in the store. Be careful trying to return things to this location. I honestly never buy anything I do not know I will wear. Obviously it is COVID so they make you return things that do not fit. The lady at the return counter an older smaller lady blonde hair glasses treated me horribly. They would not refund my money due to the jeans apparently smelling like smoke. Sephora wasn't great. Then I had a couple good experiences. I have been here many, many times and service has really varied. After the way I was treated Friday I will never step foot in here again, ever. I walked in and was looking for Stila brand as it is one of my favorites. I wandered around and could find no where. Finally an employee passed me and I enquired very politely as to where to find it. The response was " we don't carry it anymore". Her tone was beyond rude, and she literally never stopped walking. I am telling you I was stunned and to top it off other employees heard it and so did other customers. I was so taken aback that I just left. I have been going to the hair salon at JCPenney in Chico for 5 years now because it is the cheapest in town to get a haircut. The hairstylist I go to does a really good job on my hair. At the time I started going there I was paying $22.00 for a haircut. Blow-dry was $12.00 which I never had done. I just left with my hair wet. A couple of years ago it went up to $30.00 for a hair cut and just recently it went up to $40.00 for a haircut and $10.00 more for a blow-dry. This is getting ridiculous. I can go somewhere else and pay the same amount. Also, every time I go in there. There are only two hairstylists working and there are about 12 chairs total so 10 chairs are not occupied. I'm not sure if they are not getting the business or there is a large turnover with hairstylists who come and go. This price is too much for what you get. JCPenney's forgot they have competition and people will start going to their competitors. read more

I have been shopping here for over 25 years an so has my whole family since the old location in the north valley plaza , I had the worst experience here with the Lady that works in make up and their manager. Trying to leave out the back door to get to the mall but doors were locked 15 minutes before closing time, I kindly asked if the doors could be unlocked and opened to enter the mall . Employee says I can ask manager if he can unlock the door. Walks away to call for manager.( I here the whole conversation over there intercom phone system that is on the desk in the back . Saying there are some customers at the door entering the mall , an want to know if they can be opened up so the can enter the mall , he says no I am not walking back there . She says what do you want me to tell them . No answer from him . She comes back and says I am sorry the manager is in a meeting an won't pick up phone . I explain to her don't lie to me just tell me the truth please . I heard the hole conversation. She says sorry I don't know what to tell you. I go up front to ask for a manager and the man I was talking to was the manager. I asked him if he was just talking to the lady from the back door to let customers out , he said no I am sorry. I asked can I talk with the other manager please. He says yes I was the one talking with her . Why did you just try dodging me , you first tried to hide behind the pole in the store with glass . And now this why . All I was asking for was to get out the back doors to the mall . If it is a policy I would totally understand that an went on my way . But to hear your comments an conversation about this and then try to tell me that you were not the one talking to your employee. This review is for Sephora: I went in there today on my break and it was really nice because it was empty. I couldn't find the exact lip color I wanted and they didn't have any extra inventory, but I found a replacement. However, never once was I welcomed, asked if I needed assistance, nor asked if I wanted to try something. I saw two employees standing outside of the Sephora store talking and another one was fixing her own make up in one of the mirrors. How is it that a place this popular and new to Chico hired such awful employees? How did they get this job exactly? Not for their customer service I'll tell you that much. I always make an effort to shop locally. Even large corporations like JC Penney provide jobs to our community. Unfortunately it seems like more and more stores are simply taking their customers for granted. A line of 8+ customers appears and apparently no one is available to help serve customers. When a customer ask politely," are there any more cashiers available", and is told there is a register open on the other side of the store. Literally, there were 4 sales associates within 20 feet of the registers. The clerk says none of them know how to use the registers???? Not hard to see why JC Penney has filed bankruptcy! I like this particular location of JC Penney. They have a really great selection of plus-size clothing upstairs, which I love. The shoe selection is great, but since I wear an odd size, I have a hard time finding things. Yesterday I was there and the wonderful salesgirl let me go in the back room and look at her wall of shoes in my size because it was more efficient than having her run back and forth telling me what they had in my size. WORST Sephora I've ever been to. I didn't want to have to go here but I found out the hard way that Chico does not have much for a "shopper's experience". I came in already knowing what I wanted and asked for some clarity from one of the girls on the floor. She attempted to assist in color matching me by putting on A HUGE LOAD OF FACE MAKEUP on my face. I was utterly mad at this point and had to go over what she put on or take off for that matter. It was super streaky and just not right, but here she is trying to convince me it looked great. While I am sitting there, more customers are coming in and I'm guessing their floor manager was the one ushering the customers to the girl I was working with. Ok. I got it at this point. Their just trying to blow through as many customers as possible while shoving product down their throats in the hopes that they'll buy something, anything. I was hoping for a personalized shopping experience I have had at other Sephora's but this was not it. What a disappointment this store is ! I went in the store and ordered 2 pair of Levi's from the cashier only to find out the next day they had cancelled my order because they say lack of credit. I found out they had done this a week and a half later only to numerous phone calls and a trip to the store to find out where my pants are . It's funny that my store credit is over 5000.00 but they tell me no credit . A friend had a good experience at the Sephora center so I decided to try it out...nope, terrible service when I was there this week. The lady I had finally found to assist me was rude and acted as if a customer needing help was annoying her, very unprofessional. If you don't want to provide the customer service you're getting paid to do and are going to be rude to paying customers get a different job. The products I was about to buy I placed back on the shelves and left. I was looking forward to shopping in the Sephora center but it's disappointing the lack of professionalism. This is for the APPLIANCE DEPT: I had a wonderful experience purchasing a new WASHER AND DRYER here. I shopped around, but the Appliances Dept inside this JC Penney - specifically with the Dept Manager JACOB WALKE is definitely the best ever! Jacob Walke took the time to help us find the best bang for our buck, even searching in his online database for other options not on the showroom floor. He was patient, extremely knowledgeable about washer and dryers, but most importantly he went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly. After the sale he made himself available if there were any concerns or questions. And when I did have some hiccups with the hired installers that came out to deliver and install the W&D, I called Jacob, he answered right away, and he stayed on the phone, helping us get it all sorted out. Not only that, he came down to inspect the installation himself since I had some issues, and he fixed everything until it was perfect. - no charge. He will not just place an order and leave you hanging in the lurch. So definitely check out Jacob Walke for your APPLIANCE needs!! He handles other appliances as well in that department. Oh ya, I just remembered that after my first visit speaking with him, I went home to think about it. When I came back and was speaking with another employee, Jacob had walked in on his day off to do something really quick, and he did not mind when the other employee asked him to help with some of my questions, off the clock! FYI I purchased an a LG washer with a pedestal washer beneath, and matching dryer - it was successfully installed and I love them. read more

Another American institution bites the dust..... I went to the Chico Mall today and stopped in JCPenny in the hopes of purchasing a dutch oven. After browsing a little, I started to look for prices on the display where the dutch ovens were (there were no prices on anything). To my dismay, neither of the two blabbermouths working in the housewares department looked over at me to ask if I needed help. In fact, no one in any other department in this store seemed to be working. No one acknowledged me or asked if I had questions or needed help. Which by the way, actually I did. For some reason, there were no prices on anything I was looking at. I know, I know, it sounds like I need attention. I don't care about this at all, but it is important when you're going to spend money someplace, that the people that were hired to greet and help people, do their jobs. I'm so sick of walking up on two idiots that are talking to each other--and are so engrossed in their meaningless, pathetic conversation that neither can acknowledge the customer--or ask if they need any help. Yeah it's a boring, stupid job.. I get it--that's why we gave it to you. Try. At least, try to pretend that you're there for a reason. Don't be upset that it doesn't feel like your home--where you waste the other 16+ hours of your life doing nothing, and thinking about nothing. I'm sorry but, I don't feel like I should have to politely interrupt two dumb shit's aimless conversation to ask the price of something when it's their job to assist customers. Worst customer service ever!!!!! Haley in the children's department was so rude. While waiting in line she tells another customer to go to another register so she can go to lunch.
