After a few trips when I was younger I always liked Jay as a mountain but the old lodge was a little like the ski area in Hot Tub Time Machine - so thankfully that has changed, we just had our 3rd trip to Jay as a family. Few ski areas, esp. in the East have figured out or invested in, being a Resort. Jay is remote, so they needed to change to get the families, and not just the hard core ski/boarders to visit.
So Jay has one of the best mountains and snow, particularly for glades and powder in the East, but these cases obviously are weather dependent. Having the Waterpark, multiple bars/restaurants and the Ice Hous skating center ( we were able to rent skates, sticks and helmets for a stick an puck ) clutch.
So -- 4 stars or 5? -- Really only 5 relative to other ski resorts, still my first choice for a destination in the East ..however...Since we were up last year it does seem that the food and restaurant management has slipped. One big criticism is the restaurants all seem to be offering the same type of food.,The food is good - but seems to be all fast prep type offerings, variations on a theme. So-bring food for perhaps 1/2 of your meals, I believe most rooms have kitchenette.
One day on our trip the lifts were closed due to an ice storm - "stuff" happens. In ANY service business it is what you do when "stuff" happens that shows how good you are - here they also could make improvements - Examples: so they have a Cable Channel - of nicely produced regional, Jay centered videos.. Enjoyable, but then they do not have a channel showing what other things are going on, times etc.
Also - due to weather - they must have at least 10-15 days a year where they have to shut down the lifts... to really help make the best of it they should have some fall-back activities. Ski / Board tuning clinic - it takes one person, and ideally you sell tuning kits (Activity + revenue= win-win , right? - I have been doing my own tuning for 20+ years - so I would go BECAUSE I have been doing my own tuning for 20 years!) Snow volleyball? Sledding, there is xc-skiing around, snowmobiling etc , but I had no idea how to set that up ( no cable channel, no concierge)
Back to why you should go..... the people both guests and staff we find to be very nice and social, talking and joking with strangers on the tram is always fun. We love eating lunch at the Sky Hous - (Tijuana Hot Dog is a must) ...You can still put together a good logging / Ski package for a reasonable price, having no-wallet, not have to constantly be handing kids cash just to get a Gatorade (charge all to the room), no keys for a few days all good. For us this is a 8 hour drive, if we have the time it is our go to...
BTW - the other reviews crack me up - snow at Thanksgiving (hit or miss), playing in the rain does not give you a cold...c'mon man, if it rains you get wet. Up until Christmas - is off season, you will come across untrained personnel because it is so seasonal - if you compare a ski are to a cruse ship - then Jay gets 3 stars or less. So there is a lot of room for improvement. read more
