Cozy dining room, creative menu, and great service! Highly recommend if you're in the area.

One of the best evenings we have had in the past ten years. No question about it. Ranks with fine dining big city restaurants. With the dismal and abominably warm winter New England has had in 2022-2023 ski season, we decided to go as far north as we could without crossing the border with Canada, so we lodged and had a superb weekend at Jay Peak, VT. In addition, one of my college classmates and Air Force career colleagues lives in nearby Montgomery Center, so he recommended the Black Lantern and it was one of the best recommendations ever. First of all, the history. Montgomery VT has the most covered bridges in a single town jurisdiction in the US. The area had a role to play in the War of Independence, when construction on the Bailey-Hazen Military Road to Hazen Notch began in 1777 as a way for the Continental Army to invade Quebec. Hazen's Notch Road begins a few blocks from the Black Lantern. The Inn was built in 1803 and remained as an Inn until it closed down in 2015. A group of concerned citizens bought the historic property, remodeled it, bought another building to expand the business, and reopened it in 2018. Its six rooms in the historic lodge and the four suites in the annex, allow for vacationers to stay in the historic town with close proximity to Jay Peak. But this review is for the dining. The truly fine dining offered here. We made reservations and they were honored on the spot, considering the restaurant was certainly busy. The beautiful, cozy and early American decor matched the ambiance and persona of the place. We got together with our friends and were seated in a wonderful location with privacy. The Black Lantern has joined into the farm to table movement and it shows in the amazing, fresh and abundant food available at the venue. Their beef and pork come from a local natural farm a few miles away. So does their lamb, coming from a local farmer. Their chicken is local. Their cheeses are from several Vermont producers including the ubiquitous Cabot Cheese, but also the Boucher Family Farm, the Jasper Hill Farm and the Vermont Creamery. Fresh vegetables come from nearby sources. The local and fresh sourcing of their food shows in the quality and taste of everything on the menu. And then there's their beers.... Local breweries and micros make an extensive part of their menu. Burlington's Fiddlehead, Zero Gravity and Queen City, St Alban's 14th Star beer, and Essex's First Republic. Their ciders are sourced from three locations in Vermont and even they carry wine from local producers. And their coffee is fair trade certified and roasted in town by Big Jay Roasters. The meal was impressive. We started the evening with Fried Yuca infused with truffle oil - succulent, and their Fried Brussel Sprouts that came encrusted with bacon, Gorgonzola and Parmesan cheeses. Crispy, tasty, superb. Then the salads for everyone. Fresh, crispy, beautiful. And it was time for main courses. I had their Chicken Curry stew which turned out delicious. Two of us had the lobster ravioli, made on the premises and as one of our group said, "heavy on the lobster" with not much filler. And then the steaks. About a pound and a half, perfectly seared with marbled pink inside. Truly amazing. Sadly, we had no room for dessert. With amazingly generous portions and two shared appetizers, we were stuffed. But what an evening. Service was impeccable. read more

We were sooo excited to come back to The Black Lantern after having a wonderful meal and experience back in January. We made a reservation for 6:30, got there right on time and we're seated right away. Last time, I got a burger special and subbed sweet potato fries and it was so good. Portion size was generous and the burger was cooked perfectly! My partner ordered the maple glazed scallops special and he also really enjoyed it. We also got the fried Brussels sprout app! We left full and satisfied. However, this time around we did not have nearly the same experience and it was so disappointing. I ordered just a regular burger cooked m/w, no bun, sub side salad (I was trying to be healthy). Chris order the steak tips which comes with a soup or salad. The waitress took our order a didn't return for a very long time. She brought the bread out only moments before the food and she never brought his soup out until we reminded her. Okay, fine. Mistake. No big deal. But then, my burger was way undercooked as was his steak. He ate his anyway, but I just cannot eat bleeding meat so I asked them to cook it a little longer. However, she didn't return to our table for so long that I couldn't even ask her this until Chris was nearly done with his dinner. As a result, we both ate at different times, which kind of stinks. Finally, we asked for the bill and they upcharged me $4 to sub the little tiny side salad (with squishy grape tomatoes) even though I didn't get the fries, the bun, and they even forgot the pickles (I love pickles and they served pickles with the burger last time). The whole experience was just not good. The food was okay (for me), Chris enjoyed his. Last time, we wanted to rate it a 4.5, who's ultimately averages up to a 5. This time it definitely deserves a 3. I'm struggling between giving it a three or averaging it between both experiences and giving it a 4. I guess I'll go with a 4, but just know quality and service is not consistent and for this reason, I don't think we will go back again. read more

I visited here from out of town and they had the most amazing fries I've had. their vegetarian option at the time which was a burger with chèvre cheese was amazing. it's a quaint inn and I really enjoyed the cocktails as well. read more

Excellent service ... our anniversary dinner was great! I had the maple salmon and my husband had the steak special.

I had the steak tips which were delicious, and others in my party had the burgers and said they were delish!

Food was delicious from bread to salad to entree. Service and ambiance were also great.

Food is always terrific. Yucca fries are outstanding! Great specials every day. I love the maple chicken sandwich. Super friendly staff and welcoming of children. My kids love their chicken fingers. read more

I'll start with the bad - the walls are paper thin. You shall hear everything your neighbors say or do and if there happens to be something going down in the Tavern below, you'll be enjoying it in your bed.* That's the only bad, everything else is a perfect, warm Vermont experience. Only about 10-15 minutes from Jay Peak, situated in the town of Montgomery Center, which is more of a one horse town than a bustling resort stands a historic B&B. Rates were reasonable, all rooms have DirectTv and a flat screen, bathrooms weren't luxurious, but not horrible. Rustic in every sense of the word. Complimentary breakfast was wonderful and served with a smile, conversation and a hug if you're ever so lucky. If you happen to experience the Sunday brunch, whooo wheee, that's some good eating. An array of baked goods, eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, fresh Ham to compliment the freshly cooked eggs benedict smothered in a sausage gravy. Diets not allowed. I loved having the tavern right at my finger tips since negative 20 isn't great for wandering around. The food was delicious. Not too hearty, but a nice amount of food for the price. Highlights to the chicken pesto sandwich, the burger and the pork! Great fare after a long day on the slopes. Did I mention they do a little home brewing? Taste one of their special brews! One visit to Black Lantern Inn and you'll be a lifelong fan. We met a bunch of lovely couples who speak to that. They come multiple times a year, every year to rage Jay Peak, but I also think to enjoy this special place that feels a little bit like home. We loved our one night and morning spent at the historic Black Lantern Inn. The charming red brick home was built in 1803 and has been lovingly restored through the years by various owners. Our rooms were very comfortable and the staff was truly amazing. Locals stop by the bar nightly for drink specials. On this night, it was $2 draft beer. Iris is a young employee here and seemed to be everywhere at once doing a fantastic job. She was cheerful, accommodating, helpful and always smiling. Right after we arrived, my friend and I decided we wanted something to perk us up. Iris suggested we try a Nutty Irishman which absolutely did the trick. Our dinner was fantastic and Iris was there to offer dinner suggestions and bring us our food. (Does this sweet girl ever sleep?!) I had the Fresh Atlantic Haddock crusted with almonds and lemon. Delish! We slept great and enjoyed a lovely breakfast of eggs cooked any way, bacon, fruit and coffee. read more

My husband and I got takeout from the Black Lantern last night. It was good! We checked our order when we got it to the car and were glad we did because they'd given us one incorrect meal. They were quick to exchange it and had just put the wrong item in our bag. I had the paparadelle which was fine but nothing special and my husband had the Caesar salad which he said was great! They do have outdoor seating which we wish Yelp had mentioned before we ordered takeout. read more

Absolutely lovely! Stayed here for two nights to go skiing at Jay Peak - it was a perfect stay. Warm, inviting dining and bar area, and the king bed was exceptionally comfortable. Wonderful breakfast with fresh squeezed OJ and eggs made to order. Will certainly be staying again! read more

I love this place. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and feels like I've stepped into a cozy historic home. The food is high quality, beautifully presented and consistently delicious. I highly recommend it for a regular weeknight meal or a special occasion, it has price points and dishes for both kind of meals. The full bar is stocked and very friendly. We had an absolutely delicious dinner here on Friday night!! After a long day of skiing at Jay, we usually end up at a burger/beer type pub but ended up making a reservation on the dining room side without realizing it. I'm so glad we did. It was the best meal we've eaten since our honeymoon in Hawaii a couple months ago. Foodwise, everything was five stars except for the french onion soup. It was a little bland for me. I don't want too much salt, but this seemed to have none. The crab cake with mango salsa, filet wrapped in bacon (AMAZING), and duck special were all melt in our mouth, "ooh" and "ahh" worthy. There were a lot of reasonably priced wines by the glass. Service was a little slow (seemed like 20 minutes for our soup and crab cakes to come out after we ordered, but we were happy to relax and enjoy the ambiance. We also had the chance to check out our friends' suite #2 and it was really, really nice. The fireplace was blazing and it was clean and super comfortable. The room seemed new. I love finding places like this! I stayed here over President's Day weekend and will most definitely be returning again on our next trip to Jay. Our first night there, the owner was gracious enough to keep the bar open for us (we arrived very late) and even had a couple drinks with us. This guy pours a perfect pint of Switchback. I didnt even realize that was necessary, but it is. now. Complementary breakfast prepared by Charlie fully exceeded my expectations and gave us a nice full tummy before heading up the mountain. The staff are all awesome, really cool and friendly people. We ended up spending most of our time in the bar area chatting up the locals, and had a great time. The food is great, no complaints there. The chef seems to know what he's doing. His skills really shine at brunch on Sundays, so don't miss it! The brunch is not only complementary if you stay on Saturday night, but it is also amazing! Also available - a Bloody Mary Bar - fully loaded with homemade pickles and all the necesary fixings. DO NOT MISS THE BRUNCH. I loved my stay here and look forward to returning soon! read more

I didn't stay here but ate dinner twice during a ski trip (March 2012) - amazing. I had a seafood bake in a cream sauce that was outstanding and the next night I had the crab cake appetizer and the bleu cheese stuffed mushrooms which were again superb. Service was attentive and friendly and they have a fantastic bar featuring several rare Irish whiskeys. If you're in the area it's a must-go. read more

What a gem. This place was charming and the food was fabulous. The inn dates from 1803 and is located in the picturesque town of Montgomery, and it's front porch offers a perfect vantage point to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. Met up with an old friend and chef mentor there and we ate our way thru several appetizers and shared a couple entrees. Every dish was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The scallops were succulent and the portion abundant, and just a few kilometers away in Montreal you would pay twice the price. What a great place, didn't plan on staying at the BLI until the first place we went to ended up being a dump. What a great second choice, rooms were clean, breakfast in the morning was delicious and the wide variety of irish whiskey made a great night cap. You get a real hometown feel with the place and the owner along with the staff make you feel like family. I will definitely book here again for my next trip to Jay Peak. read more

Had dinner at the Black Lantern Inn on Friday, August 22 with my husband and another couple. Must agree with the reviews, the food was fresh and amazing. The service was excellent and the dining room was extremely welcoming. Also spent some time on their old fashioned porch in this historical building. Brew Pub was great where my husband went and tried to whiskies after getting all the information from the bartender. REALLY A MUST TO HAVE DINNER here and look forward to returning. read more

We have been here one other time with a local friend and we couldn't say enough good things about this quaint restaurant. The people, food and atmosphere were fabulous. However, last night, 4/28, we went and got seated in the dining room in the corner which was fine as it was quieter and cozier. The waitress was lovely when she first came over and our drinks and appetizers came fast and were delicious. Then we waited and waited to place our dinner order and then she finally came back. Our dinners came, and we never saw the waitress again. Unfortunately, I never ate my meal because I had no utensils. Not once, did she come and check on us and then when she finally did, wasn't fazed in the least bit that I couldn't eat my meal. And never apologized. It's a shame as we would love to support the local eatery. read more

What a great long weekend at The Black Lantern Inn. Suite was spacious and the wood burning stove so cozy. Aside from putting on a few pounds (homemade muffins with full b'fast and dinner was ridiculously good!) the only thing that would have made the weekend better was more snow!?! Jay Peak a short, bumpy drive away has skiing and new water park. What a great getaway...looking forward to next trip...will diet first so I can enjoy all that great food (I think you can see menus on website, and book rooms online as well after checking them out...way convenient!) This is my first yelp review, because i couldn't let the Black Lantern Inn pass without telling others how amazing it is! My fiance and i just went up for a two night stay and to ski at Jay. The Inn is super cute, like a big B&B but with a full pub and resataurant downstairs. The food was some of the best I've had in a very long time. We live in Boston and go to so many good resturants that we're not "wowed" too frequently. The dinner we had both nights were WOW moments. The duck breast rivaled any duck at the fancier Boston French resaurants, the shepards pie was amazing. The prime rib and maple bourbob glazed filet were better than we've had at five star steak houses, and the desserts were great too! The prices of the the food and drinks were well below what you got for it. We paid under $100 for 3 glasses of wine, 5 beers, 2 dinners and dessert. The staff at the Black Lantern makes you feel like you're staying with friends or family/ They are so helpful and kind. I can't say enough about the entire staff at the inn, at the end of the night the kitchen crew even came out and had a drink with everyone, which was so laid back and cool. The rooms are comfortable, good size with a good size bathroom. A little too warm for out liking, but what can you do when you're on the second floor and every room has the heat on. We cracked the window and slept like babies. Breakfast in the mornings was so "homey" feeling and warm, and a perfect way to send us out to Jay for a day of skiing. This inn is amazing we spent four days here the owners bent over backwards to make our trip great they got us tickets keep our room stocked with towels and robes everything was clean and well kept the hot tub was amazing and the food here is out of this world Charlie the breakfast cook was the man he filled us up with top notch breakfast fare the owners house beer was great and the dinner was refined and delicious Hannah even did a load of laundry for us this was our second trip to the inn and we were very pleased both times read more

I stayed here over the weekend (December 2012), and everything about my stay was AMAZING! First, the rooms - very comfortable and clean, spacious and our room had a gas stove which made it so cozy! The outdoor hot tub was great in the wintery weather too! The FOOD - complementary breakfast made to order, all homemade pastries and delicious french toast with real VT maple syrup. We had dinner in their restaurant every night we stayed because it was that good! Each entree we tried had attention to detail and all of the flavors were a culinary masterpiece - especially the chicken cordon bleu, bacon-wrapped filet mignon, and the "Nutty Irishman" - desert with coffee gelato, Bailey's and other delicious flavors. Last, but not least, the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating - the combination of this small-town inn and its staff makes you feel like you're in your home away from home.
