Wood stove next to our table...
Tina S.

We were sooo excited to come back to The Black Lantern after having a wonderful meal and experience back in January. We made a reservation for 6:30, got there right on time and we're seated right away. Last time, I got a burger special and subbed sweet potato fries and it was so good. Portion size was generous and the burger was cooked perfectly! My partner ordered the maple glazed scallops special and he also really enjoyed it. We also got the fried Brussels sprout app! We left full and satisfied. However, this time around we did not have nearly the same experience and it was so disappointing. I ordered just a regular burger cooked m/w, no bun, sub side salad (I was trying to be healthy). Chris order the steak tips which comes with a soup or salad. The waitress took our order a didn't return for a very long time. She brought the bread out only moments before the food and she never brought his soup out until we reminded her. Okay, fine. Mistake. No big deal. But then, my burger was way undercooked as was his steak. He ate his anyway, but I just cannot eat bleeding meat so I asked them to cook it a little longer. However, she didn't return to our table for so long that I couldn't even ask her this until Chris was nearly done with his dinner. As a result, we both ate at different times, which kind of stinks. Finally, we asked for the bill and they upcharged me $4 to sub the little tiny side salad (with squishy grape tomatoes) even though I didn't get the fries, the bun, and they even forgot the pickles (I love pickles and they served pickles with the burger last time). The whole experience was just not good. The food was okay (for me), Chris enjoyed his. Last time, we wanted to rate it a 4.5, who's ultimately averages up to a 5. This time it definitely deserves a 3. I'm struggling between giving it a three or averaging it between both experiences and giving it a 4. I guess I'll go with a 4, but just know quality and service is not consistent and for this reason, I don't think we will go back again.

We loved our one night and morning spent at the historic Black Lantern Inn. The charming red brick home was built in 1803 and has been lovingly restored through the years by various owners. Our rooms were very comfortable and the staff was truly amazing. Locals stop by the bar nightly for drink specials. On this night, it was $2 draft beer. Iris is a young employee here and seemed to be everywhere at once doing a fantastic job. She was cheerful, accommodating, helpful and always smiling. Right after we arrived, my friend and I decided we wanted something to perk us up. Iris suggested we try a Nutty Irishman which absolutely did the trick. Our dinner was fantastic and Iris was there to offer dinner suggestions and bring us our food. (Does this sweet girl ever sleep?!) I had the Fresh Atlantic Haddock crusted with almonds and lemon. Delish! We slept great and enjoyed a lovely breakfast of eggs cooked any way, bacon, fruit and coffee.

Hours are a mishmash, reservation message never returned, COVID ignored with staff showing up positive. Expensive & mediocre.

Good food and service. They would use a few nice rugs to absorb the noise. Great historic building.

The restaurant is large with a bar on one side and wall of picture windows on the other. We seated ourselves and the waitress came over immediately and provided us with menus. We ordered a beer for each of us. My wife ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and I ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. We also ordered a side salad. The salads were good with all fresh ingredients. They were also very large for a side salad. The sandwiches arrived and they featured a thin piece of chicken with a large amount of fried batter on all sides. There was too much batter and the chicken was very dry. There was sauce but not nearly enough. We both did not care for the sandwiches and my wife left much of hers on the plate. There were two positives to the visit. The service was excellent as was the view.

Overall, it offered a unique experience, though not without a few drawbacks. To start, the appetizers were fantastic. We shared the beef tartare, mussels, and crab rangoon. The beef tartare stood out for its flavor, though the accompanying baguette was slightly stale. Despite that, the appetizers were the highlight of the meal. For soup, we sampled the French onion, which was met with mixed reviews--decent, but not particularly memorable. The main courses included kangaroo, venison, fish and chips, and duck. While the chef's talent for creating flavorful dishes was evident, all the meats were unfortunately overcooked. This may have been due to the challenge of preparing multiple meals at once, as we were informed that there was only one chef in the kitchen. The restaurant itself boasts a charming and homey ambiance that enhances the dining experience. Service was friendly and accommodating, with no issues on that front. A standout feature of the menu was the inclusion of kangaroo--a rare find, especially in Vermont. While it's worth trying for the novelty, be prepared for its distinctively high iron content, which imparts a metallic flavor that may not appeal to everyone. In conclusion, this restaurant offers a unique and enjoyable experience despite a few missteps. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop for those visiting the Jay area. Just keep in mind that the kitchen's limitations may impact larger parties or more complex orders. If you're feeling adventurous, give the kangaroo a try--you likely won't find it anywhere else nearby!

We ordered the antelope Swedish balls, French onion soup, and firecracker beef. Most of the food wasn't great - the antelope Swedish meatballs were the best of the 3. The French onion soup had too much thyme and a very watery broth. The firecracker beef was offensive!! It has a warning that it's very spicy (which is true), but it was a really strange dish! I expected an Asian inspired spicy beef dish over rice, but we got a hot sauce drenched rice bowl. Allegedly there was beef in it, but there was really no texture or flavor other than hot sauce! To clarify to the owner comment - we did tell our server we didn't like it, and that it was not due to the spice - it was due to the gross flavor. She simply said "oh I haven't heard that one" and did not offer to take it off the bill or replace it. Now the drinks and desserts were fantastic! We loved our seasonal cocktails, and we ordered two desserts and polished them off. The maple chomeur was drenched in sauce and so good - we actually poured the remaining sauce over our apple warm too! I loved the fresh apples in the tart since there was some texture. Service was also very good from the front desk to our server.
