The staff was really nice and friendly but very soft spoken. The place was very clean and modern. Easy to understand their servicing process. Walk up, order. Pay.. get a seat and clean up before leaving. The food was a bit simple needs a bit more flavor. And if your not happy they have their local hot-sauce that is definitely worth trying or buying a bottle to take home! Super friendly staff, efficient order and preparation of my order that is more organized than other nearby chaotic coffee houses. Ordered a couple of Frappuccinos that were hand delivered which was a step above another local coffee house where they drop it on a common pick up area and scream out your name on top of the loud ambient noises of a very busy prep area. Cutest shop if you ever get to pop in. Today, we had Java for lunch at our office and there was something for everyone. I am Gluten Free and Dairy Free and they were able to craft an incredible sandwich catered toward my dietary restrictions that was full of flavor. My biggest issue - the menu is online from a QR code on the table. We ordered the Mexican breakfast bagels and two coffees. The bagel sandwiches rang up at $14 each, but the menu says $13. I mentioned it to the girl at the register and her answer was the menu isn't updated. I felt that is a cop-out. It's more like the cash register isn't updated to the menu. The bagels were delicious and the coffees were tasty, I will give them that! They do not have heavy cream. The store was hip, clean, and had a lot of seating inside and out. Our bill for the above-mentioned items was over $48! We will not be back... :( If you don't mind the prices... I would recommend it. read more

Javasurf for brunch, finally happened today! I had already browsed the menu and went with something if seen earlier - the Meximelt for $10. A generously sized sliced everything bagel loaded with turkey sausage, cream cheese, pepper jack, avocado, and pico salsa. I added a side of fresh fruit and side salad for $3 each as well. The side salad was large and fresh with tomato slices and balsamic dressing on a bed of fresh greens and the fruit side was very generous with orange slices, sliced banana and diced pineapple. Yummy. Well worth the price. My date had the build your own breakfast sandwich and did bacon, sausage, and egg on an everything bagel. He's pretty picky but this was simple enough and he liked it. To drink, I had an iced chai with cinnamon on top. It was v-e-r-y good. I wanted to also try the cold brew but didn't have enough space so I'll save that for next time. Our waitress was friendly and helpful but new to waitressing so she didn't know most of the answers but the friendly owner was nearby and answered all our questions throughly. I'll be back. This is a great casual lunch and breakfast spot with some yummy menu items with all the ingredients I love (tomato, eggs, avocado, turkey, cream cheese, etc.). I had a remarkably well made mimosa and the big kahuna wrap. Both were very good, the staff was quite nice too. Somebody suggested adding onions to the wrap, and I think that would have been the right call. None the less, I'd go there again for sure. read more

Coffee was hot and self serve- not complimentary but a flat rate of $3.00 regardless of refills. I loved my coffee smoothie with peanut butter and banana!!!! Wouldn't recommend the "fresh squeezed oj" or has the taste but it's watered down...not worth $5 a glass. I want to like it here but just didn't have a great experience. You order outside and then they bring the food to you in To Go containers. Plastic silverware. Water is $4!!!!!!!! When I eat out I want a plate and silverware. My sandwich was good. I got the Lifeguard. I liked the sriracha mayo and I could taste just a little pineapple. I did enjoy it. My friends got salads. They looked good but really nothing special. My Mich Ultra was $3 and water was $4!!!! That is outrageous!!! My friend had a dog and he had to buy a bottle of water. Usually when places have outdoor dining there is water available for dogs. I might come here for a coffee in the future but probably won't eat here again because of the things I mentioned. My friend and I came here per my friend's suggestion, and I'm glad we ended up coming for breakfast. I ordered a cold brew with almond milk, as well as a tomato and turkey sausage egg scramble with no cheese and gluten-free bread. With a cool outdoor self-seating area and a central location in the ViBe District, Java Surf Cafe & Espresso Bar has a lot of potential and many positive reviews, but its coffee and espresso drinks were beyond disappointing. -- Vibes -- Cool outdoor seating area with murals and cafe lights. Some raised flower beds add greenery but sadly had litter in them. Casual, comfortable, slightly unraveling outdoor chairs were paired with sturdy wooden tables. Lots of small paper litter including napkins from the establishment were all over the ground within the outdoor seating area. A great R&B hip-hop playlist from around 2017 played a little too loudly for the uncrowded area. Dogs are welcome. -- TLC -- A couple young baristas/servers were working. They were friendly enough while taking orders and brought out the orders as they were ready. They never asked how the orders were or checked back. They swapped out the trash cans around 1pm and covered all of them, then didn't provide another option or pick up any of the napkins etc that were left around. -- Plastic -- When ordering, they asked if we wanted the drinks "for here," which we did, but the coffee and espresso drinks were still served in plastic/paper cups and with a plastic straw. They don't appear to offer options for recycling. -- Drinks -- We went specifically to try out the coffee & espresso drinks. I had the (black) Cold Brew ($4) that was listed as being brewed for 12 hours. I regularly drink it black. This Cold Brew was very bitter, not smooth, and dark in flavor without any bright notes. Maybe it could take a lot of cream and sugar. I would've preferred iced Folgers. I poured out 3/4 of the drink. My spouse's (black) Americano ($3.50) tasted very bitter and like the espresso beans had been burnt. I didn't like it at all; my spouse said it was just alright. -- Coffee Drink Condiments -- Stevia and cane sugar and dairy-based creamer at a self-serve condiments counter. They seem to have coconut and almond milk available but it might be an up charge for lattes, etc. They use Monin brand flavorings. -- Takeaway -- It's a neat concept, and I get the appeal as its a great area to hangout for brunch, drinks, etc. Hopefully their food is good, but given the quality of their namesake drinks (which they boast about online as "the finest"), I'm not overly hopeful. I'm not sure if it's gone downhill or if everyone posting reviews wasn't particularly focused on the coffee. Either way, I haven't been this disappointed by an establishment in awhile. Don't know if we caught them on a bad day, but sheesh. Service was friendly but awful. Very busy the morning we went, so I was patient with the absurdly long wait to get our food. Problem was the food quality was pretty darn poor. The vibe inside the joint is great. Seemed like a good amount of regulars were there (surprising to me given my experience). Anyhow, Java Surf Cafe is near Oceanfront and is a hip cafe that can seat you in outside or inside. They have some delicious and unique flavors for coffee and most of the selections are organic. My girlfriend and I got the blueberry , and apple muffins and both were delicious- one was moist and one was crispy , as they should be respectively . I ordered avocado toast (as described on the website - picture added) and got an avocado sandwich. Awful, not as described on the website at all. It was two pieces of white bread (un-toasted) with mashed avocado. No balsamic drizzle, herb mix or olive oil. If you are going to advertise certain ingredients along with a picture - expectations of the customer are going to be that they receive that. A tardy review of a Restaurant Week visit last month. This was the rollout of breakfast mimosas so yeah for Java now getting their license to serve alcohol. It's good for business, expected by customers and more importantly the brunch competition is already ahead of the curve with their breakfast/brunch game with this regard. The business is located in the newly formed Virginia Beach Vibe District. They have their own parking lot beside the business and have additional spaces they are permitted to use behind. Free off street parking is available. Java's lot is tight on spaces away from the street. I got jammed getting out. The lot had no debris, however two trash containers overflowing the top were in the rear. They also have outdoor seating on warm days which this was not. I was warmly greeted by owner Dwayne who recognized me from previous visits at both their new and old location off Pacific. One thing that I adore about Dwayne is his big smile. He seems to always be happy and smiling. I'm suspicious of this...ha, ha. But seriously this is very cool trait and I always look forward to it. I also chatted with Dwayne's bride Rachel who co-owns the business. The biggest treat of all was to meet Dwayne's Mother who was just departing. What a delight and she looks great! The interior of Java has a bright beach feel with an orange theme. The large windows floods the the room providing a cheery uplifting space to enjoy a meal. The ceiling is open with a cool fan network ran off one belt drive...look up its pretty neat. Tables and chairs with a counter make up the seating. Waits are common for weekend brunch as the space is cozy. Dwayne got me a coffee and mimosa to try with Java now serving. They are using a quality champagne. A restaurant Week menu was placed in front of me and I discussed recommendations. My order - Bailout / two scrambled eggs, ham, pepper jack, pineapple, house pico, tangy sriracha mayo in a panini-pressed wheat tortilla wrap. Dwayne himself made it for me. I paired with a salted caramel cappuccino. Loved my mimosa and would get again. The meal was a yummy bargain for $10. Brittany finished out the service with Dwayne working the coffee bar. She is a longtime employee and always friendly. When back in the Vibe I look forward to another brunch visit and probably a mimosa. Some other things are planned by Dwayne in warmer weather. This quaint little café that sits on the Oceanfront was a great find for breakfast. Upon entering it was packed, which is always a good sign. After glancing over the menu a few times. I decided on getting "The Big Kahuna" Wrap, which was jam packed with everything but the kitchen sink. Scrambled eggs, bacon, turkey sausage, pepper jack, avocado, pico de gallo & sriracha. Whew! It was both filling and delicious. My caramel iced coffee was on point too. My only gripe about this place is that they do not serve potatoes. Awesome place to go for coffee! Been to a couple coffee spots around the area and this one is my favorite so far. Their "Frank" (lox bagel) sandwich is very delicious. It's the perfect amount of everything a Lox should have. The coffee I got this time was a "smoothie" advertised as a lightly sweetened coffee. It definitely surprised me and I needed more! Went in for our first time on a Saturday before noon. Place was moderately busy. No one grated us when we entered and it wasn't clear on how things worked between sitting ourselves, waiting to be seated or finding a menu so first few minutes were a little confusing. We fended for ourselves and found a pile of menus so snatched one up. Then we saw an employee ask if someone needed help. No one had name tags or any distinguishing "uniform" so we didn't know who worked there and who didn't. We fell in line behind another couple and waited out turn. After they were helped we were handed off to another cashier who took our order. We ordered two lattes - one hot and one cold, a make your own breakfast sandwich and a Big Kahuna. We were given a number and went and found a table outside. The drinks came first. The employee left them on the table and walked away. No interaction whatsoever. Then our food arrived - this time with some conversation by a different employee. The food and drinks were really good. The Big Kahuna had a nice level of spice and was very fresh. Overall I would have given more stars if the staff was more welcoming and it was more clear how things worked when we arrived. Bottom line is good and drinks made it worth it and that would make me want to return. I'd have to try again to see if the service was a one off situation or not. read more

As we were chatting with the host ( who by the way was exceptional) we went through their vast breakfast and beverage menu..Leading us to their specialty lattes! Need to make a point to come back here! I was at the beach admiring the sunrise one spring and then was hungry for breakfast. This place came up and it was pretty close. It's open super early (a PLUS - thanks guys) and there's plenty of free parking (near the beach? Wow). I got the lighthouse melt and a latte. You can just see in this photo how beautiful the presentation was. Not to mention that it was also DELICIOUS. That's rare - when something tastes as good as it looks. The prices are fair. Wish I had read other 1 star reviews before coming here. It seems as though the owner/manager lacks the ability to take accountability for their mistakes and would rather blame the customer. The atmosphere and decorations are great, unfortunately the positives of this place pretty much stop there. Came here with my sister and nephew; her and I both got the build your own breakfast sandwich that comes with a pastry and drink. For those two sandwich combos and a child's chocolate milk the total was $50, seemed overpriced but we were hoping the food would be good. However, when the food came out it was incorrect. We went up to the counter to clarify and were told the girl at the register told us incorrectly that we were able to get a plain croissant as our pastry with the combo. Instead, you are only allowed the grab and go items that are wrapped up on the counter. No problem, my sister paid for a plain croissant as that is what my nephew wanted. The owner/manager then came out and told us they made the food like it was on the ticket and that they had asked the girl at the register for clarification. I asked why they didn't ask us for clarification if the girl at the register was confused and he kept insisting that they made it like the ticket said, which they did however it was rang in wrong. I then said no problem, I will leave a review which is our right as paying customers. He then said I was threatening him and if I threatened him again "we could hit the road." Quite the mature response from a grown man. He clearly was upset at the mention of a review and then refunded us for the croissant that we paid for and brought us a muffin as we did not get one originally with our second sandwich combo. First impressions are so hard to get back. I was headed to Commune this morning on my bicycle and decided to stop here instead. I was greeted by a lovely hostess...who told me where to park my beach cruiser. I walked in and sat at the bar. The next 10 minutes did not go so well....I'm not even going to tell you about it. I was very close to walking out due to what I perceived as rude/discourteous behavior...and also some unclear directions of where or who to order with. I did something a lot of people struggle with......I let it go. I'm glad I did. I got over the initial disappointment and began to enjoy the atmosphere and coffee. Hell, even my server grew on me a little. I don't always think people set out to piss me off....it just happens....often before I've had coffee.
