Service was left to be desired. The lady staff was busy heating up someone's order, rather stood by the toaster oven and watch it heat up instead of multi tasking to take my order. Then came another customer who just picked up coffee. She took his order ahead of me. Instead of taking my order, she chatted a bit with the customer. After he left, she then was on the phone! Thankfully another staff coming from a break took my order. I ordered the brain killer (cold drink) which was good although wasn't served with maraschino cherry per the menu; and hot Brown sugar vanilla latte (which had to be redone to add the brown sugar syrup!) which was good. The vanilla iced coffee wasn't anything special -- a bit flat, and the vanilla felt more like an afterthought than a flavor. Not bad, just not memorable. For too long, coastal Virginia lacked the amazing coffee stands and shops we used to find everywhere in the Pacific Northwest. In recent years, a crop of great options has finally popped up. Three Ships is one of the best! Every time I've gone in the baristas have been friendly and helpful. Their in house roasted brews are top notch, and start with their excellently sourced beans. I've tried various blends/brews, both hot and cold, and have enjoyed them all. They also offer a nice variety of baked items, including gluten-free options. This muffin may not look like much, but it was an incredible chocolate chip filled gluten free goody that tasted like "the real thing", num num num! There is a sitting area inside the air conditioned shop as well as a nice porch area to sit outside in the heart of the VB Vibe/arts district. read more

If I were only reviewing the barista, I'd give Three Ships a 5-star review -- Abigail was very friendly and helpful. But it's a coffee shop, so I'm going to review the coffee. Honestly, it was just so-so, and definitely overpriced for the quality. First, the selection was minimal. Although the website lists seven types of coffee beans that they sell, they only had two types in stock. (Apparently, you have to come in on Tuesdays because they only have the ability to roast a small amount at a time, and they do it on Tuesdays; by Friday, when I came in, there wasn't much left.) They did have the espresso beans I was shopping for, so I bought those, but they turned out to be a disappointment: The espresso was VERY acidic, almost sour in taste. (I also tried making pour-over coffee with the same beans to see if the result was better than with my espresso machine, but it wasn't.) I get that different folks have different tastes in beans, but I've never had an espresso that didn't balance bright acidity with deeper, richer flavors. I ended up mixing Three Ships' acidic espresso beans with another roaster's rich medium-roast beans, and the result was much more palatable. Finally, a bag of beans costs $24 -- and that's not even a 1-pound bag, it's just 12-ounces! That's $2 per ounce for coffee that's not even all that great. Definitely a poor value. So 5-star service, 3-star coffee, 1-star value. read more

The coffee was delicious! I was surprised by the house alternative nut milk though. I did a decaf peppermint mocha with the house alternative milk. The first sip of peppermint was delicious but the aftertaste of cashew and pistachio was not a good combo. That was my bad! I got the breakfast burrito and it was good. Honestly more of a hot pocket than a burrito but a quick, easy snack on the go! Everyone was friendly and accommodating. Loved the vibes! I love going out for coffee on Saturday mornings so my boyfriend and I headed to Three Ships Coffee Roasters since it was a place we've been wanting to try for a while. We actually got there around 11:30am and the line wasn't too long but there were quite a few people sitting in the dining area. Since we hadn't been there before, we asked for recommendations and were told the Pecan Molasses Cappuccino was a great choice. The lady taking our order described it as an 8 oz cup of decadent espresso made with whole milk (oat and almond milk were options as well) that was slightly sweet and savory so I definitely wanted to try it. My boyfriend decided to order the Mocha Cappuccino since he loves chocolatey coffee drinks. After we ordered our drinks, we were informed that the kitchen had already closed but they still had previously baked goods for sale. The cappuccinos were served in the cutest of mugs and tasted phenomenal. The drink was creamy due to it being made with whole milk and the espresso was rich in taste but not overwhelming or too strong. We absolutely loved the cappuccino art on top as well, it was the icing on the cake. Since we did decide to sit in and enjoy our drinks, there was very limited seating and the area we did find seating at was at a corner table with two high top chairs. Unfortunately, the music speaker, which was also on top of the table, was pretty loud which made it hard for us to hear each other talk. Overall, we both agreed that the drinks were absolutely amazing and that we would definitely return. The cost of both drinks was under $20 which we thought was really good seeing as though it was a specialty coffee shop. Next time, we will definitely get there sooner so that we can sit at a table, not by the speaker lol, and enjoy our coffee. read more

Three Ships popped up in my GPS while visiting VA Beach for my daughter's track meet & it really hit the spot. The Wife & I got their breakfast wrap and it was delicious. We also got an egg and cheese and were surprised how freshly made things were, as there is a bit of a wait before receiving your food. I got a standard Latte and that was good as well.
