Java House's successes are impressive. Their product(s) must resonate with a loyal audience because additional retail locations continue to pop up all across central Indiana. I imagine having the support/backing from Heartland Foods helps... The environment at this particular location is okay. I've always been confused by the meeting room in the back, which has no heating and cooling. I'll blame that on whoever took the lead on the buildout. Now for the most important question: How is the coffee? I wouldn't call myself a coffee connoisseur but I'd like to consider myself a decent judge of good quality and flavor. My home coffee preparation process includes: grinding fresh beans to a grain specific for my preferred brewing method (usually Chemex or Aeropress), heating the water to a specific temp based on the bean's country/region of origin, patience, etc. Java House's coffee is not good... I'm fairly certain they use "coffee" powder that's dissolved into water (think Nestle instant coffee) then placed in pressurized kegs that are then either heated or cooled before being poured via a tap. This is not a place you go to experience good coffee. I believe Java House appeals more to certain coffee drinkers who enjoy adding flavors, sweeteners, milks/creams, etc. and not those interested in the art of growing, roasting, brewing, etc. If you're chasing quality coffee in the area, I suggest checking out either Indie Coffee Roasters, Illumine Coffee, or Eggshell (if you can figure out Eggshell's hours). I went in here to kill a few hours between things, and it was a pleasant time and a good place to people watch. As far as drinks, I want to start by saying that their lattes are definitely the way to go. They are a bit sweet, so I would advise getting it with less pumps. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it :). After I had been there about an hour, I ordered some drinks to go for me and for some other people. The decaf cold brew was fine, but it could have been stronger. The matcha... bless their little matcha hearts. It was presweetened which leads me to believe it's a mix. It wasn't grainy, but it didn't taste like anything? The strawberry matcha tasted mostly like strawberry milk and the matcha flavor it did have was not good. There were so many matcha recipes on the menu that I thought it would be better. The hot plain matcha was also not great. There needs to be more of a tea flavor and it almost tasted artificial. Overall, I would definitely come back! This morning, I also picked up a bacon and egg bagel to have with my coffee. The breakfast sandwiches are pre-prepared and heated. Nice staff, even with a busy Sunday morning, they were able to get my drink to me in just a few minutes. I like this location being downtown Carmel, right off the monon, but is sometimes more crowded than others and harder to find a place to seat. We popped in during the holidays as a way to warm up while we were waiting for our two kids to finish up at Christkindlmarkt. We didn't go, but they were anxious to keep that tradition alive, so more power to them. Anyway, back to the coffee/chai. There menu is a visual delight, which for one that doesn't always go for the fanciest of caffeinated creations was appreciated. I went with a regular chai and my wife opted for the dirty chai. We also went with some of their egg cheese bites for a little mid morning pick-me-up, as it was Christmas Eve and we needed the extra energy. This is an outstanding location, with easy access to the Monon in the center of Carmel, so I can see someone taking the trail up to this location as a little break during their jog, dog walk or bike ride. Very cute coffee spot conveniently located right in the middle of Midtown Carmel. The menu had a ton of unique options and they also had lots of options to customize your drink as well. The staff was very pleasant and the drinks came out fairly quickly. Whenever possible I support independent coffee shops and found Java House in Clay Terrace, just a couple few miles off my track. I stopped in for a black coffee to go. I would rate my Java House coffee as below the quality of gas station coffee. At $4.15 I expected at the very least, a decent cup of coffee. But this was undrinkable to the point of being gross. I would have gotten a far better cup had I stopped at Speedway. What rip off! If they are willing to cheat you on something as basic as black coffee, I assume that the rest of their offerings are made with the absolute cheapest, institutional ingredients on the market. Five stars for the spacious interior, seating arrangements and Instagram-worthy interior decor. The patio is small but has a few tables tucked behind the large flower plants, which makes it seem more secluded than it is. On nice days, they have the walk-up window open for convenience. As a non-coffee drinker, I wish they had more tea options. They have black, green and hibiscus or two signature drinks. I ordered the Hockey Wife (hibiscus coconut) and while the drink is pretty, I was disappointed. Essentially, all the tea sunk to the bottom and I was drinking straight coconut milk for 3/4 of the cup. I tried to mix it, to no avail. At almost $7 after tax, I didn't think it was worth the money. Today was my first visit to this location. I had a free drink coupon I received from the Fisher's location grand opening and decided to try out this Carmel midtown shop. Service was excellent! I received a very warm & friendly greeting as I walked in. Initially I ordered a hot drink - specifically the following; 20oz. Sunny Side - Columbian (Medium Roast) 2.5oz. Salted Caramel 20oz. Add signature Whipped Cream. It was prepared quickly but gave me enough time to add 2 boxes of decaf cold brew cups. (Yelp had a 10% off coupon upon checking in which I took advantage of!) There is a parking garage as well as some street parking available. I parked on the street right across from the entrance in the 15 min loading/unloading area since I was getting my order to go. They were quite busy this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. but still I received excellent service. After visiting the Clay Terrace location, I was excited to visit this location, especially since it just opened July 2020. Again, I was very impressed all around! I got an iced coffee and it was excellent. I really like how the menu is super simple to order from. There are a few tables inside and a separate area with two large conference tables. What's neat about this location is that in addition to the ordering counter inside, they also have a walk up window facing the outside where customers can place there orders, grab a seat outside and wait for their drink. I have been a huge fan or Java House since I moved to the Midwest. It's always so fun to try their seasonal drink or check out their booth at events around town. The only issue I've had with them was on multiple occasions they forget that I asked for milk alternative. It just makes me feel awkward when I ask to remake the drink since makes me feel like bad for asking. I can tell the difference with one sip and I have lactose intolerance.
