If I could give zero stars I would. I live out of state and was visiting family. I've always loved Java and it is my fav coffee house to frequent while in town. I ordered two grilled cheese sandwiches one without tomato the other with (since it was on the menu). She clearly heard me because she repeated my order, I mentioned it was for my grandkids and if one of them didn't like it with tomato's I would eat the sandwich to which she laughed and agreed. I also order a bowl of soul with 2 shots. How is it my order was wrong? I received 2 egg sandwiches, I was so confused. I went back to the same person and explained what I received. She said she knew but not sure what she entered into the screen. I'm assuming a manager came to assist, she apologized and said my order for the food would be refunded and they would remake the grilled cheese sandwiches. They made the sandwiches, but today while checking my statement I was charged $42.65 for 2 sandwiches and the regular size BOS with 2 shots. Did I really pay that amount for two grill cheese sandwiches and a Bowl of soul? On the menu it showed the grilled cheese sandwiches just over $10, was I really double charged for the sandwiches?!? I am extremely upset and so disappointed in the service at this location. I did return the first sandwiches since I would not eat them, they tossed the sandwiches in the trash with an annoyed look. It was not my fault but somehow they made it seem like it was. This made my entire experience a not so good one, I would not be returning to Java after my experience. read more

I used to work buy this coffee joint which is only another block down from another coffee shop I used to hit up. If I would have known the vibe of this joint sooner, I would have been in a long time ago. I was in the area so I stopped in for a coffee break. Heard nothing but great things so of course I had to check it out. Walking in, the vibe is very 90's to me. You got the big comfy couches, the decor and music. The music brought me back to high school. It's like I warped back in time to my high school days, with my big backpack and all my homework. I remember listening to this same music with my big mug of coffee. It brought back such fond memories. I got myself an iced americano with sugar free English toffee with room for cream. I appreciate that the sweet barista left enough room for my cream and not fill it to the brim. They have a table fully loaded with condiments for your drinks and food. I added my half and half with a blue packet and made my way to a table. I normally don't kick it for a long time at coffee shops but today, I hung out for over an hour. I love the vibe so much! I chilled for a bit inside and drank the rest of my coffee outside. They have a couple tables facing East so the sun wasn't beating on me. Even though it's a busy area, it was still pretty relaxing. If I could give this joint more than 5 stars I would. All the other 5 star joints I have ranked were great but I will have I say, they don't complete the vibe like how this place does. Great coffee shop in downtown Boise! It was packed on a Saturday morning but we were still able to snag a table. My friend ordered the Mexican chocolate latte and eggs and toast for breakfast. Prices are very fair. They have many fun specialty lattes to pick from as well as the typical rundown. The baristas were so sweet and pleasant. On this occasion, I wandered around until I stumbled upon a coffee shop and it definitely worked for me this time. I'm an iced americano with 1 Splenda kind of guy and feel like this is a good baseline to judge a shop and this shop passed with flying colors. I really did enjoy my coffee in a setting that was true to form a coffee shop. The only thing missing was Phoebe singing "Smelly Cat" and I know I'm aging my myself with that reference but for my fellow old folks, you get what I mean. read more

I'm a fan after this mornings visit for my second breakfast!! Great espresso coffee drinks and a limited, but largely healthy food menu I found more than adequate for my tastes! Turkey scrambled eggs with sourdough toast and nice touch of peanut butter instead of ham on toast. My dog ate most of the peanut butter though Second dish was my yogurt, granola, and fruit bowl. Outstanding, everything fresh, including the granola!!! You order and pay inside and your food and drinks brought to your table. I absolutely love places like this when not too crowded and you don't have to queue up to order. I was in on Wednesday morning. No wait. I expect this is not the case on a weekend. Located on a nice tree-lined street just a couple blocks from the Capitol building in Boise. If you want free street parking, you may need to be ready to drive around a bit. I found a surface fee lot on 2 blocks away. Very clubby and inviting on inside. Super friendly service at the counter. I sat outside at one of the 6-7 tables that line the side of the building along 6th street. Some trees provide nice shade. $35-$40 for 2 with tax and tip. Pretty good value. This is a winner for me. It was a hectic morning, and I was on the hunt for a place to grab some grub and coffee to kickstart my lesson planning. Java downtown it is! It was super busy, but I managed to snag a seat and ordered through the QR code--how cool is that? I got the Keith Richards to keep me fueled and an egg croissant sandwich, which totally hit the spot. Fluffy eggs and bread warming up in the sun--what more could you ask for? The ladies behind the counter were awesome, always there to help me out with water, utensils, and whatever else I needed. The flow of customers coming and going was neat to people watch as I sat in the sun, listening to grand music as people conversed about the election. read more

Java is a great little place. Wonderful drinks to get the day going. I am yet to try the "bowl of soul" but looking forward to the day I do. Slightly long line to order but food came pretty quick. Java is a great meeting spot for business meetings, catching up with friends or working! There's a variety of seating and very well spread out so other's don't hear your conversation. For a coffee spot they have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. I settled on Todd's Competitive Edge and it did not disappoint. I had the choice of plain or vanilla yogurt. Java used to be my favorite coffee place in Boise. I would much rather support a local business than a big chain like Starbucks. I just ordered my usual "Bowl of Soul" and added 3 extra shots of espresso. It was $12.14! Needless today this is ridiculous! Java you will lose support in the community with prices like that. Java is one of my favorite coffee shops in town, both the location in Hyde Park and downtown Boise. It gets pretty busy, but it's worth the wait for sure. The bowl of soul is perfection, both hot in the winter and iced for the summer. They also might have the most extensive food menu for a coffee shop in town. They have a full kitchen so they have breakfast burritos, eggs Benedict, etc. The Benedict is my personal dish of choice. read more

This place gave me an amazing tasting coffee with almond milk. I had to find a new shop. I used to go to Dawson & Taylor but for some reason staff sweetens my coffees at dawsons & taylor with knors sweetened syrup instead of sugar which leaves a horrific mechanical after taste and you can literally tell they dont use real sugar (who knows why?) anyway This coffee from "java" had actual sugar and not the knorrs so it was pleasant as can be and im happy to make the switch additionally this giant home made cookie was off the chain for 3.95 and they had like 30 breakfast burrito options which i cant wait to try and everyone was friendly and helpful. My coffee was 3.95 too also cheaper with flavoring than dawsons & taylor so with tip of $2.00 $10.69 cheaper than the $12 for the inferior pastry and coffee dawsons use to serve up. Stopped in for a quick pick me up. Asked about alternatives to coffee and ended up with a red bull. Meh. Wish they had something blended like Dutch Bros or SB. Ordered lunch since it was about that time. The tuna melt was yummy! Tasty bread, well seasoned tuna, and a big slice of tomato. Delish! The rice krispie treat, not so much. Yuck! Hava Java ! I have been at Java downtown since the opening. I remember they didn't advertise you just came in and you could have a free free latte a free coffee and a free pastry. It was delicious and I worked close by so that first two weeks I think I gained 5 pounds. It was so good. I have enjoyed Java, coffee and lunch four years. It's a wonderful place to meet a friend and have a meal and a visit or just to sit by yourself, with what is called a Keith Richards special it's a hot chocolate "bowl of soul "(and four shots of espresso )delicious so yes, this is a place to come. Because the Java at Hyde Park is very busy on Saturdays, twice we've headed to the Java Downtown to avoid standing in line. First time, our eggs benedict were served a little cold. Racist employee! I go every week to Java with my child and spend $40+ every time, yet this time I was treated quite poorly by a staff member. I have never seen this employee and frankly I hope I never see her again. My child and I simply forgot to request whipped cream in our drinks, she was passive aggressive to my child but not outwardly rude when my child asked to have it added to their drink. Yet when I, an obvious Mexican, requested to add whipped cream into my order, I was given hostility and rudeness. Instead of kindly telling me they now charge for whipped cream. The employee aggressively told me I need to pay for it next time before rolling her eyes and taking the drink from me. We have never been charged before for whipped cream, and even so we would've happily paid the $1 extra per drink. The money or extra charge is NOT the issue, the issue is the blatant rudeness and racism towards me she expressed. Once again, we are FREQUENT customers. And this has made us not want to return for awhile, we tip $10-$15 each visit and it's safe to say we will be keeping our tips if we see that racist Employee again. What a shame. Overall we adore this establishment, and have been frequent customers for two years now. We highly recommend this place despite this racist employee. Maybe just make sure you're white when visiting. This place is quite relaxing to sit in as well as the ambiance is usually calm. read more

To my understanding, Java has five locations in Idaho (two in Boise; one each in Hailey, Ketchum, and Twin Falls). The one in Downtown Boise is located on the corner of W Idaho St and N 6th St. I grabbed breakfast at Java Downtown before heading out to play volleyball on an early Saturday morning. There was only one other customer when I got in at 8:30. I noticed the high ceiling, the black couch on the southwest corner of the coffee shop, and the Marilyn Monroe sketches on the left wall. There was some rock 'n' roll music playing in the background. The atmosphere seemed relaxed and very inviting. I chatted a bit with the baristas. They were super friendly. One of them noticed that I was taking my credit card out of the tiny back pocket of my athletic shorts, and he was intrigued. Ha! I ordered the breakfast croissant. It consists of steam-scrambled eggs, jack & cheddar cheese, and bacon, on a croissant. In my book, no breakfast is complete without hot chocolate, so I had to try theirs. The barista asked for my name (to write on the cup), and to my surprise, he spelled it correctly! Most would spell it as P-O-W (as in the song from Black Eyed Peas... Boom Boom Pow!), but he got it right. Hurray! Loved their hot chocolate! The way they add the whipped cream is interesting. The hot chocolate was tremendously rich, and is probably second (or maybe third) to the best hot chocolate in the Universe (Venus in Berkeley). However, the croissant was a bit on the bland and cold side. I guess I should have asked them to warm my croissant up. I like flakey croissants but theirs wasn't. I did love that they were generous with the scrambled eggs and that they had a nicely plated slice of orange + banana + apple on the side. As the morning went on, a few people started coming in to grab their morning coffee. I noticed a large group of businessmen doing a breakfast meeting of some sort. It wasn't very loud, though. I have to add that Java takes music seriously and they did a great job of setting the mood right. I think this place is a solid four-and-a-half stars, but I am rounding down to four for now. Great service and perfect crema on their Americanos. The oatmeal with bananas and brown sugar is a great way to start the day. In addition to the usual coffee roster there is fresh squeezed OJ available and great smoothies. The staff is on the ball, thoughtful, and genuine.
