Frito pie, chili, macaroni and cheese, pickled eggs
    Amy N.

I was so excited to try this place. It smells like smoked meats when you walk in the door. The service was very friendly. I placed a to go order and had a nice chat with the bartender while I waited. I got the pickled eggs which were just OK. We were hoping that it would have a more intense pickled flavor than it did. I also ordered the frito pie. The chili was dry and there weren't many Fritos with it. No cheese either. We got the Philly style chopped tri tip sandwich. The bread and meat were dry. The redeeming dish was the Mac and cheese. It was amazing!

Meh. This place had such glowing reviews that I came in ready to live my best Idaho potato life. First time in the state, and I was psyched to get my spud on. Drinks first. Cocktails only come in cans, which was not the rustic Idaho fantasy I had in mind. I chatted with the bartender about two flavors from the same brand, and she brought me the one I didn't order. Whatever--I drank it anyway, but not exactly a confidence builder. We ordered three appetizers. The chicken lollipops? Delicious. I would actually come back just for those. The Frito pie? Sad. Dry chili in a cast iron skillet with a few lonely Fritos sprinkled on top. They should think about the classic presentation of frito pie, which is served in the frito bag, smothered with chili, cheese, and sour cream. That's the way it was meant to be. (Ideally served with a spork!) And now...the potatoes. Idaho, I expected greatness, but these tasted like they had been nuked in a microwave. The cheese gave it away, and the potatoes themselves were undercooked. The "candy bacon" topping was a joke--more like a hide-and-seek game with three tiny pieces. The space is actually cool, and they do have games, which is fun. But one bathroom was completely out of order, so there was a bit of a line. Bottom line: if you come here, stick with the chicken lollipops, grab a game, and maybe lower your potato expectations.

Busy corner location in the downtown area. Very little parking so if driving, you will need to find parking in the area. Outdoor patio and indoor seating. Small place but cool beer hall vibe. Waiter was excellent but the kitchen is slow so beware and have another beer because you'll be waiting. This is the one bad thing about this place and I don't get it. I'm sure the meats are premade/bbq'd? Anyways, the sandwich bread is excellent. Only complaint is there is a lot more bread than fixings. Good flavors and combo's. Mac-n-cheese is the bomb! Good selection of unique and delicious beers. Would return if the company and time was right.

Matlack's is a hard sell for me. I think their beer selection insider selection is really thorough and excellent. I think it's a small bar, let's be honest, on the corner of a really popular intersection downtown. On a packed Friday or Saturday night the service is going to be a little bit slow because of how packed the bar is. The bartenders, however, are very friendly. They have great recommendations. If you order food, expect to wait a little and I don't think their food is that great. The fish dip I would stay away from. I really wish I could give this place a higher rating, but based off the slow service due to how packed the place can get and the weird food it's gotta be three stars.

Boss Hog sandwich and Mac & Cheese. Awesome!
    Jenn C.

How have I not heard about this place?! We happened upon it because we needed a quick bite to eat before our glass blowing class. The mac&cheese is legit and completely worth the upcharge. Hubby got the tri-tip sandwich and I got the Boss Hog. Unbelievably delicious. Great selection of beers. Only down side was there was one server/bartender. But he did his best and we were taken care of. But I would have ordered another beer if I had confidence it would come out in a timely manner. It's loud, but great for happy hour. And once the weather is consistently nice, a great place to hang on the patio.

Wow - Tri Tip sandwich with mac and cheese side

Wow! Never had tri-tip... I'll admit I didn't know what chimichurri was.. I'm not too refined apparently... but will say flavor of sandwich was amazing... the mac and cheese might of been best I've ever had..... will be back- highly recommend- and beer oatmeal stout and Rainier we great also.

Great casual spot with beer, wine, canned cocktails, and elevated pub fare. A group of 9 of us met up here before an event at JUMP (only 4 minute walk away). The canned red sangria was a delightful surprise. Couldn't decide so shared two sandwiches with a friend--tritip and chicken club, both with side salads. Chicken club was my fav! Will be back soon to explore salads too!

This was my first time here. It used to be something else and I had always wanted to check it out, but never got to it. Went to this place a few weeks back bc some friends and I were going to a glass blowing class up the street from Matlacks. So finally...I made it into this place even if it's a new (named) place. What can I say? Hmm. I dunno. I mean, it was ok. I just had a bowl of Mac n cheese... $7 for a small bowl and the bowl is... smallll. Is it worth it? Nah. I didn't think it was very good. Homemade mac n cheese can go either way. Really good or..absolute crap. I wouldn't say it was absolute crap, but I'd skip on ordering it again lol. I guess majority of people go here to drink. I don't drink. So...I mean, this place isn't really for me. The waitress was very nice: kinda super kickback. I say that bc of a couple things. A super super cute guy leaned back on their garage doors (that are opened during warmer months...I'm assuming). He cracked it on accident. Waitress didn't seem to care at all lol. I would think for liability reasons...they'd move the people to another table and I dunno...maybe tape off the glass to prevent further damage and cut down risk of someone getting seriously cut. She said "I dunno what to do. That's above my pay grade" (that's word for word). I do feel bad calling her out, even tho I know technically didn't bc I don't know her name. It was January 11th tho at like 5pm. Sooooo... Second. My buddy ordered some soup and in his soup was a small sliver of a wire. He thankfully didn't swallow it but came super close. It noticed it when he took a spoonful of his soup. He told her and she was just so nonchalant about it. I guess I'd just expect a place to show more concern? I dunno. I guess this was "above her pay grade" as well. She did offer to bring a new bowl. He declined. Got something else. Now this bristle or whatever it was...looked like something that broke off one of those metal brushes a cook would use to scrape the grill they use in the back. I may be being dramatic, but this could have gone really wrong if it had gone down the wrong tube...or like, what if a small child swallowed it? Check comes and thankfully she didn't charge him for the soup. She charged him for the bowl of chips tho he got as an exchange. Most places, in my experience, would not have charged him for anything. A small piece of metal brush or wiring like this..even small...is kind of a big deal...AT. A. RESTAURANT. There were a couple of guys working there that were more accommodating. Super nice guys. They recognized how bad having a wire in your food is. They both apologized several times. She never once apologized. Very weird. First time at this place. Probably the last. It's just not a place I'd enjoy going to again. It's weirdly located, parking is a bitch. There's a garage across the street...and god only knows how much it costs to park there. You can park on the street, but good luck finding a spot...it's. NNNNOT. easy. Prices are a tad high..but it's a downtown restaurant. So that's to be expected. The atmosphere is really cool tho. I'll give it that. It's a small small place, but yeah, I did dig the inside of it. Sadly your view is a parking garage, but what can ya do! At least it's all windows and you're not sitting in a cave! I wonder if they named it Matlacks bc they couldn't call it Matlocks?? Thanks for reading, Yelpylackers Cheers!

Turkey club, side of Mac and cheese

This place might be my favorite place to eat in Boise. They have everything you want in a place: cool atmosphere, great beer, great food. What else could you ask for? The food is so fresh and you can tell the ingredients are high quality, shoutout for selling Acme bread. We ordered the turkey club, chili, mac and nachos. 10/10 amazing and the beer selection is great.

Inside was decked out for Halloween!

We came in here after passing it a MILLION times and saying "oh we should try that!" I am so glad we did! Ash took great care of us and we were delighted with the food! This place is a gem with a really cool auto shop vibe inside and great decor! We can't wait to be back (I've been meaning to write this review for a while which is why there's Halloween decor in the picture )

Lunch portion of tri tip sandwich + fritos. Beyond delicious.

My favorite place to eat is Boise. Tri tip sandwich is amazing and so flavorful. Service is fantastic. Great atmosphere and vibes. Grabbing a meal here is always a top priority when I'm in town.

The food here is *chef's kiss.* My meal at Matlack's was one of the best I've eaten at BoDo. I left a huge fan, already dreaming of going back asap! I started with a glass of Candy Orange Sour by Untitled Art - a fruity sour that tasted of orange creamsicle. It was wonderfully tart but didn't make me pucker, and incredibly refreshing. This would be excellent on a hot, summer day. For food, I bellied up to a menu item I'd been eyeing for a while - Matlack's Seattle Dog ($15.00). In fact, this was the offering that brought me into the restaurant. It's an entire spicy kielbasa sausage nestled in a toasted hoagie roll, with layers of spiced cream cheese and topped with an abundance of caramelized onions. Hands down, this was very likely the best damn glizzy I'd ever had!!!It was so, so delicious! An outstanding version of the famous dish. I know I'll be fighting the urge to order this again next time I'm here... Instead of the Frito's, I asked for a side of Mac & Cheese, only an additional $4.50. Daaaamn, this was one heck of a dish. I swear there was more cheese (a beautiful blend of gruyere and cheddar) than pasta, which I am totally all for. It's rich AF, so a side is the perfect size. Don't skip this one. My husband chose the Santa Maria Tri-Tip Sandwich - hickory and apple smoked tri-tip, sliced tomato, roasted poblano, chimichurri on an ACME baguette. From the few bites I was able to swipe, it was equally as delish as my order. The tri-tip was very flavorful and cooked perfectly. It paired well with Frito's. I'd recommend this one as well. The portions are large and certainly a bang for your buck. I appreciated the laid-back atmosphere and friendly service. I will 100% be back!

The meat was delicious! There's not much seating, so I assume it's mostly a takeout business, but we had no complaints.
