Been going to Java Beach since I visited SF before I moved here because our hotel is located right next to it. After moving here I've definitely had better places for the typical cafe eats but that does not mean Java Beach isn't good! If you are in the area and what a sandwich and a cup of coffee or a baked good I would recommend coming here! It is located right by the zoo and beach which is nice for a quick bite if you are visiting the area. I know their menu is reduced now because of covid but I would recommend any of their salads because they do not disappoint! Also their chocolate ganache cold brew is so good basically coffee chocolate milk! read more

I came here one morning to get a latte before going to the zoo and I can't wait to return! There was plenty of free parking in the area and there was also free wifi so it's a great place to get work done. The latte came with up to three complimentary shots and the latte art was beautiful! Terrible customer service, I made my order few hours ahead using they own website, they charged me on my credit card, I went to get my breakfast and they did not have it on there side. They treated me like I was lying same after I showed them my order confirmation and receipt on my cellphone. It was the worst experience, the way they took care of they own mistake. I understand that it was quite busy, which is probably common on the weekends, but the woman taking orders was clip and practically barking at people at times. I came here often to get hummus veggie bagel and chai latte. This morning I thought I try their matcha green tea latte as I've tried them from other cafes. I must say that the matcha green tea doesn't even look green. Compared to the matcha latte I got from Peet's, it is far different. I have to say I love the one from Peet's wayyyyy better as they used more matcha. It's definitely a winner. After I got my matcha from Java beach cafe and I was so disappointed, I went straight the nearest cafe Andy Town cafe to get the same thing which is not much difference than Java beach. The other day I got one from Starbucks which tastes great and has lots of matcha in it. I posted here the two matcha green tea side by side from Java Brach and Andy Town. You can see how pale it is compared to rye one from Peet's. I got myself a little gift of electric milk frothed and organic matcha; I would make my own matcha latte from now on. I can put as much as matcha as I wish. Sorry Java beach for the not so pleasant review. I don't know if it's like this everyday or it's just the barista. But definitely disappointing if I have to pay $6 for a cup that contains mostly hot milk in it - thanks, but no thanks! Also the Chai tea is none in comparison with Peet's or Starbucks. I'm not a snob, I go to many different local cafes, but when it comes to it, I want the most for what I paid. Java beach is just convenient for me as it's walking distance from my home. But I'll drive up a bit to west portal to Starbucks or Peet's for matcha. Another thing; the hummus veggie bagel is also pricey at $7 plus tax. Java Beach is a straightforward coffee shop with your standard sandwiches, salads, pastries, and coffee and tea drinks. They also serve Strauss soft serve - so if you're looking to indulge on a warm day - Java Beach's your spot. They have a staff of 2-3 people who take all of the orders and and then also put together all of the orders, so on a busy day - do expect a little bit of a line. That being said - the wait goes by quickly and the staff are on it. For hot drinks, filling bagel sandwiches, and homemade Irish Soda bread with a neighborhood feel - Java Beach is quite lovely. We ordered at the counter, and found the staff friendly. We had to pick up our food and drinks at the counter, and everything was ready quickly. DO NOT EAT HERE! I ordered the bacon breakfast burrito and have the worst food poisoning of my life. I was in town on vacation and this was my early morning breakfast before hitting the road. I felt fine all night and morning until an hour or so after eating the burrito and my stomach started hurting. I assumed it was from over eating but the feeling only intensified throughout the day. I did not eat anything else for the rest of the day from being so sick, so this was my only source of food which is why I can pinpoint exactly how I got sick. I am on day 2 1/2 and on medication from the doctor because my symptoms are so bad. After coming on yelp, I see the health department's violations towards this establishment and sure enough all the health violations are for cleanliness/ hand washing and varmints. I should have trusted my gut when I walked in and saw all these burritos uncooked sitting on the counter in a pyramid but I just assumed she was getting ready to cook them? I have no idea how long they had been sitting out but from my experience I am going to say they were out for a long time. The bacon was cooked pretty well so it must have gone bad before being cooked. There is a chance that the eggs made me sick, but I would be surprised by how horrible I am feeling if that's what did it. Heed my warning, and do not eat here! read more

This place is really busy on weekends and seats are limited especially outdoor seating. A good number of people seem to camp out on the outside seats after they're done with food. They just sit there and read or have their kids run around. This place doesn't take reservations either. So all in all if you have a dog or want to sit outside hang tight. Also our food took about 40 minutes to get ready. When the food came out they don't tell you what's what. They seem to be short staffed so they just drop off stuff and run away. There are tons of dirty plates sitting around. To top this off my sandwich was super burnt on the bottom. Food was not bad. Tsunami sandwich and bonfire dream were good (other than the burnt part). Coleslaw was spicy but otherwise no flavor. Update: the manager contacted me and the way she explained things I think this may have been a random incident. I'm officially done with java beach at the zoo. I've tried to give them many chances but time and time again i receive the absolute worst service I've ever experienced. From receiving a tsunami sandwich that forgot to have the meat added to it to them outright forgetting to make an order at all I am done. Even if they do manage to get your order right the inevitable wait time is excruciating. The collective apathy of the employees screams for return customers as well. I live just around the corner and have tried to make this a regular spot for of mine for years but I am giving up. If you want a sandwich go to Georges Zoo just across 44th - they are better imo anyways. If you want a coffee go to one of the spots on Taraval. I cannot in good conscience recommend this Java beach location any longer. At the very least call in your order for pick up and don't torture yourself by waiting. read more

Situated next to the San Francisco zoo, Java Beach was a splendid casual place to visit during lunch. Not very busy when we visited and ordering was easy. Their menu featured several sandwiches and bagels, so I decided to order the Kerry Gold because I had missed eating a classic grilled cheese. We sat outside and the servers brought the food to us. The Kerry Gold was an unexpected open face grilled cheese! The cheese was melted on top of two thick bread slices. Even though I expected buttered up bread and cheese in between thin slices of bread, I still thought the Kerry Gold was good in its own way. The coleslaw that came with the sandwich was tasty. One of our tables outside was a little wobbly, but not that big of a deal. There was plenty of seating inside too, but we wanted to feel the ocean air outside. Such a cute environment! He actually went home the next day and tried to recreate it and it just made me salivate! We decided to try this place since the food at the zoo isn't good. I really hoped this would be a great alternative, but it was very disappointing. We ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, a Diet Coke, and a piece of Irish Soda Bread. $30 with tip. I thought both of these sandwiches were safe bets! How do you mess up a grilled cheese??? By not grilling it and serving it open face. The cheese was melted but the bread was not even browned AT ALL. It was warm cheese bread. Both sandwiches were served this way, so not a mistake. And no, the menu did not state that they would be served open face. (BTW, the cheese was good tasting and the bread was fine. If the sandwich had been an actual grilled cheese, it would have been satisfactory.) The sandwiches were both served with chips. These were the Kettle Chips from Costco. They were very broken, mostly crumbs. I would not usually complain about this but since the sandwich quality was subpar, the broken chips just added to the overall poor impression. The Irish soda bread was bland and boring. Apparently it is a family recipe. Time for an update. Seriously. $4.50 for bland. Oh, and I had to remind them to give it to me. It didn't come with the order, so I had to go to the counter and ask for it. As an aside, none of the tables were cleared, even though the place was fairly empty when we arrived. About 10 minutes after our food arrived, staff bussed all the tables and wiped them down. After we ate, we wondered if we should have eaten the zoo food. That was a sad realization. read more

It's a really solid coffee shop and sandwich place. The coffee itself isn't something to go raging about, but it's very consistent and high quality. Their food is quite good. I'm a particularly big fan of their pesto cream cheese. All of the sandwiches I've gotten or my friends have gotten have been good and all of them are very large. My favorite is the Mozzarella, Pesto & Tomato Melt. All of it quite filling. They also have oft serve - which looks like an awesome treat after a hot day at the bea And they have beer on tap! So you can also go for happy hour. Or enjoy a beer in the sun - they have 6ish tables outside on the sidewalk. The space isn't huge inside, but it seems to work - there are often a number of people there working on their laptops. Free WiFi. Lovely coffee shop with an ocean view. I believe I interacted with the owner who was so sweet and put a huge smile on my face and started my morning off great. My drink, an oat milk vanilla bean latte, was amazing and I'm going to have to come up from San Jose just to visit more often. This cafe is decent. The coffee is good. Bagels are good. But the service is really sloooow and there's really never anywhere to sit. They have 3 or 4 beers on tap and also serve wine. This cafe is better than your local Starbucks for sure. It is a bit pricey... $7.50 for two bagels. I would say their bagels are worth $2.49. Overall, I would say that this place it okay. read more

There is indoor seating as well as small tables outside esp if you have a dog. I ordered a half sandwich (Dutch) with a side of coleslaw and the irish soda bread with jam. Sandwich was amazing. I wish I had a full. The Irish soda bread and jam was also something to try. However, I do have to warn you that these two items was super filling! I could have done half a sandwich and half a soda bread instead to be at a spot of comfort. If you are in the sunset area in SF, great place to check out! read more

3.5 stars. I've been here about 2 times during breakfast/lunch. I met up with a friend the last time I was here during a nice sunny day. Parking was easy to find since it was a weekday. For food: toast with butter and cinnamon for my little one which he devoured. I got the kale ceaser salad with chicken. Big portion and I finished it all. Hey we need the greens right? Great cafe to stop by at before heading to the zoo! Coffee: my friend got an iced mocha and I got a Mocha(hot is $4.50)! One of the best mochas I've had in the city - not too sweet, just milky enough! Bagel: got an everything bagel with cream cheese ($3.75) but they ran out of everything by 12 pm so I got an onion bagel instead. Not an extraordinary bagel but better texture than a lot of bagels I've had in SF! The cream cheese layer is a lot almost as thick as the bagel itself, so remove as needed. Sandwiches: both my friends ordered the Java Club with turkey, avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo and a bit of Dijon mustard ($12.50). Comes with a side of chips or coleslaw! Sandwich was really good (may be slower to come out in person since its busy Saturdays) but worth the wait! Chips are nicely cooked and kettle cooked and crispy, not too salty. Coleslaw was more like a vegetable salad (had cranberries and a balsamic vinegarette), so not traditional! Overall good value and nice place/great location near the zoo to go! read more

I have to say their vegan burrito really blew me away. I would have to consider this the best burrito I've consumed in my lifetime. Nothing compares to it. However their latte is a pass. I've given Java another chance and the real compliant is consistency. Most of the staff is quick and efficient which is an improvement from the past. I order the same coffee every time I go and the price varies. ?? When I asked about it the cashier looked confused. Today I ordered a kale salad and substituted it with romaine. The dressing was very heavy and made it almost impossible to eat. Garlic overload! Maybe put the dressing on the side for to go orders. I had an incident with an ice cream cone and at first they responded offering a refund but they're so sweet they sent a gift card. Now I can take my whole family for cones and drinks and stuff! Java Beach is a must-visit for me when I'm by Ocean Beach or making a trip to the zoo. It's a cozy and casual spot to grab some breakfast and a much needed cup of coffee. Definitely has a "locals only" type of vibe but still very welcoming. Their menu mostly consists of quick breakfasts like bagels and pastries but they also have a good selection of salads and sandwiches. Their veggie bagel is awesome! I'm not sure what type of coffee they use but I loved my soy latte on my last visit. Service is quick and the ladies working there are really sweet. It can get extremely busy in the mornings and also on weekends - expect lines and limited seating. It's better than the Java Beach original location! The zoo location has soft serve ice cream (chocolate and vanilla), more power outlets and no minimum purchase for credit card use. With the ceiling fans (good circulation), free wi-fi, bathroom, and free/unlimited parking, it is a great spot to hang out and work - but the seating is uncomfortable (all wood, no cushions). I also love the view of the iconic Doggie Diner head! I had a medium latte (quite decent, sometimes with foam art) which was on the small side and a bowl of hot oatmeal ($3.75). They have plenty of food and drink options including giant muffins, croissants, bagels, toast, soup, salads, hot and cold sandwiches (starting at $5.50), beer on tap and wine. I wish the coffee cups were larger. The toast is interesting; it's a soft roll. I've also had a toasted sub there and they do a nice job with the toasting, the ingredients are fresh and you can choose your bread, meat and cheese. The small size is a half sandwich and it comes with a pile of greasy potato chips. The crowd is diverse, from old regulars to parents w/ their rowdy toddlers (presumably they come before and after visiting the zoo). If you can, bring your own cushion like I do. read more
