From the handwritten table card with your name...the elegant yet warm decor...to the first bite of Chef Jass' incredible food it is clear that this is not like any other place we have in Miami right now. Starters from the crispy, thin Zucchini pie topped with fresh Halumi cheese to the stuffed grape leaves (nothing like others we have had before) followed by clay cooked lamb and stuffed cabbage ...uff. And the salads!!! So fresh fresh fresh!! All the members of our group found something to love. Amazing neighborhood restaurant, so happy to have found this place! I'm a big lover of Turkish food and can say that Jass Kitchen is phenomenal and tastes like a delicious home cooked meal. The service is attentive, staff are friendly (our waitress Burcu was great) and the quality of the ingredients were 10/10. The vibe and atmosphere are welcoming, fun and relaxed. I love how there is live jazz, such a great touch! However, one thing I wish would be better here is the wine list. With such good quality ingredients and a great atmosphere, they lack versatile wine options to pair with the dishes. Anyways....try the grape leaves and charred eggplant salad and thank me later!! This is not even a hidden gem but more like a whole treasure because is not just the cozy, old fashioned, alluring and dim lit aesthetic that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside but the next level service from the moment you step foot in this fine establishment, to the personable and most attentive waitstaff and the spectacular food and dining experience accompanied by the delectable melodies played by the musician performing this evening...all of it translated to an unforgettable date night for moi. No surprise to spot a plaque from The Infatuation guide quoting this place as one of "The Best Miami Restaurants For Date Night" and I couldn't agree more. Before I get into the food details I'd like to mention Severina, the music PR and marketing manager for also being so attentive and introducing Jasmine, the Chef/Owner which happens to be such a sweet and down to Earth human. I like to thank both for taking the time to chat with me and provide more insight on the family business and magic behind the extraordinary food I will talk about next. This type of service is what elevates a normal dining experience to a top tier and incomparable one. One last mention I couldn't possibly forget is the incredible performance by artist Melina Soochan for blessing all the patrons present with some of the best live music in town with both classic and modern tunes. So with a bottle of a French Chardonnay as the perfect side kick to this dining experience, let me break down the menu items I enjoyed... ZUCCHINI PANCAKE WITH HALLUMI: this is a family recipe by the way and Chef did mention that there's a lot of momma's cooking happening back there as her mom was in fact in kitchen this evening so you know the food was going to be exquisite without a doubt. A blend of mint, scallion, feta and Hallumi cheese topped with garlic yogurt, this appetizer was a perfect light introduction. It's hard to describe it because I've never tasted anything like it except maybe a scallion pancake in an Asian restaurant but this is ten times better. The garlic yogurt on top is an perfect to give the dish flavor, moisture and contrast in texture. I opted for this light appetizer because I had every intention on ordering the skirt steak and that being on the heavier side I wanted something lighter but it turns out I had forgotten that by skipping lunch my appetite was more ravenous than usual. For this reason I'm gonna mention another appetizer I had after the entree because I was still hungry at this point, don't judge. TABBULIH SALAD: perhaps having this as an appetizer would've done the job without the pancake but why would I deprive myself of tasting something that delicious, right? To be honest, this salad alone could easily be a main dish because it's just as filling as it's mouthwatering. Romaine, parsley, cucumber, tomatoes, walnut, pomegranate drizzled on the lip of the plate and a dressing to die for. Not only refreshing but very flavorful, nutritious with different textures and a nice crunch from the walnuts. This appetizer can also be shared between two people. SKIRT STEAK: usually served with broccolini, this time with asparagus and baked potato wedges that weren't bland for a change. Steak perfectly cooked medium, juicy and tender with a side of chimichurri sauce and nicely cooked asparagus on the side. This is one of the best skirt steaks I've had in town without a question. BAKLAVA: by this time I've reached food coma but who am I to turn down a dessert like this decadent Baklava that's for the books. Imagine the best Baklava you've ever tasted and then add ice cream as a filling...omg. These many layers of paper thin flakes of dough goodness falling apart in a good way when you dig your fork into it and the ice cream oozing from the middle and these chopped nuts for the crunch aspect is what you would describe as food porn. Now don't take my word for it, go try it for yourself and tell me I'm wrong. Imagine enjoying this exquisite food, top notch service, captivating performance by a musician and a romantic ambiance all in one place at this precise time...all I can say, truly blessed. This restaurant exceeded all my already high expectations. This was again, a one of a kind dining experience that I'd like to repeat again. Now it advertises as a Mediterranean restaurant but this is Turkish all the way and I'm here for it. So...if you're looking for a romantic spot for a date, look no further, this is it and you can take that to the bank. I will be come back to try a few other menu items that I saw brought to other patrons and to see a few musicians that caught my attention online. I guess any excuse to come back right? A refreshingly cozy, rustic, relaxed, very non-Miami restaurant right smack in the heart of Miami. How non-Miami? There's none of that overdone decor, no pretentious host or staff, not located in the very upscale Design District (tho quite close) but in a humble (very quickly gentrifying) suburb. Yes, parking is VERY challenging, and the one major issue so Uber over if you can. The place is adorable inside and out, with dimly lit romantic/rustic ambiance, excellent live music (not sure which nights), and very well trained staff that was both attentive and exceedingly friendly. Another very welcomed un-Miami quality! On to the food! We ordered: Tabhouli: very good Kopoglu: mind blowing for lovers of eggplant dishes like me (wish it came with much more Pita but they will provide if you ask!) Hummus & Beef: hearty, delicious, very well spiced (NEED more pita :), ) Lamb baked in Brioche: Just wow. Show stopper. Beautiful presentation, generously portioned and mouth watering preparation. One issue, it came with the teeny, tiniest amount of rice. Another teeny tiny plate was $8. C'mon folks, rice is cheap and this dish calls for a heaping mound of it to soak up that amazing sauce! That said, GET THIS DISH. Branzino: my least favorite. Rather blandly seasoned and typical branzino fishiness, which I fully realize is a personal preference. And now on to Desserts!! Kanufe: EPIC!!!! A baked to order dessert of warm middle eastern cheese, shredded pastry dough topped with rosewater syrup, pistachios & served a la mode. Incredibly and took me back to my time in Istanbul. Pistachio Baklava with Ice Cream: Delicious though the dough was too tough to cut through with the provided spoons. Jass Kitchen fumbled the bag so hard, I had to leave a review... If you want the TL:DR - Don't go here. They're racist and there's better Mediterranean food in the area. Stick around for story time... I unfortunately witnessed an experience so blatantly racist, it felt like 1950's Jim Crow America. I kid you not. This past Friday night, our party of 4 arrived to Jass a few minutes after 10:00 PM. A hostess greeted us on their outdoor patio entrance and we were promptly seated and told the kitchen closed at 10:45 PM. Perfect. No problems so far. As soon as we stepped inside the restaurant though, the fun started - and by fun, I mean blatant disrespect: ⁃ After being blankly stared at by the entire staff and just about every patron in the restaurant, our party of 4 was seated at a 10+ seat, banquet-style round table despite other more suitably-sized, smaller tables being available. ⁃ After requesting still (aka free) water in lieu of sparkling, the server immediately sent a buss boy over to our table who snatched up our silk green dining napkins (the ones that they provided to every other customer in the restaurant), and replaced them with single-use, white paper napkins...Read that twice lol. They actually did that...Huh!? ⁃ Not a single employee even looked in our direction after we were initially sat. No one took our order for drinks and we weren't even poured water. The owner stood in the back by the kitchen door the entire time. We tried making eye contact and he didn't so much as glance in our direction. After over 30 minutes of waiting in frustration & hunger, we got up to leave. ⁃ As we were walking to our car, a server ran outside, followed us down the street to my car, and begged us not to leave. She said we'd be seated immediately and generously comped. We declined. She admitted what they did was wrong and begged us not to write a bad review. She continued to plead for us to come inside for several minutes but we, again, declined and drove off. Brutal. The hostess kept saying "Shish Kebab" over & over very slowly as if we couldn't speak English or comprehend what Turkish food was...Wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt but our party of 4 consisted of 3 women of color - every single employee in the restaurant walked right by us at least 3 times without even an ounce of acknowledgment of our table. It was no secret what was going on here... There's too many good restaurants in Miami to be giving your money to this racist establishment. The ironic part is that one of the women in our party was half Turkish and was really looking forward to the meal...When you profile your own customers though, you lose their business. Oh well... If you are looking for good Mediterranean food in Design District, I recommend El Turco in Upper Buena Vista. Mandolin, right down the street is also delicious, and Lemoni, just a block up the street, has some delicious, homey Mediterranean flavors as well. If you are looking for some good and reasonably priced late night eats in the area, I'd also recommend Tacombi on 39th - delicious Mexican food and great service. I'm so excited to have this new Turkish place in the neighborhood! The food is excellent and I actually knew our server from another Turkish restaurant with good food (Safron grill on the beach, which seems to have the same soft pita). The decor really sets it apart from most Mediterranean restaurants with live music really taking it to another level. My fiancée swears the Turkish breakfast was on par with her favorite places in Istanbul and I couldn't find a single dish that wasn't bursting with flavor. Jass Kitchen, a great idea of a concept, but deliberate discrimination results in extremely disappointing execution. TL; DR: Do not bother going here to avoid a dehumanizing & racist encounter. This was a place that my partner and I previously attended, and thought was a decent experience. Albeit, that previous experience also consisted of our server not attending to our table, ignoring us when we tried to make eye contact, and seeing all the tables around us get their food on time and be attended to. Because they forgot our dish, they then comped it and dessert. I now realize this is their tactic. This most recent experience confirmed for me why. Because of what we thought was a nice time (perhaps serenaded by the music, and seeing that my previous landlord was now leasing this building to the restaurant) we suggested to have dinner here with two friends. (Unfortunately) it should be mentioned, myself as well as my two friends are all women of color, my boyfriend is the only one that was not. It's shocking to even have to explain this for context, but here we are. That being said, we arrive and are seated at a large table, despite other more suitable tables being available, but up until this point everything seemed normal. Shortly after, we realized the experience was not. A server greets us, we're asked still or sparkling (we say still), someone returns and leaves glasses on the table, not even at each of our place settings. They were literally left at the end of the table, and much time passed before we received the water. When the server came by, she condescendingly repeated how a dish was pronounced more than one time (we didn't ask). It got worse, a busboy came by, removed our place settings (that were on every other table) and gave us silverware with cheap napkins instead. I can't even begin to rationalize this. After that we were ignored for almost 30 mins--of which it became very clear to our group what was happening--before we finally decided to leave. A server then runs after us going to the car pleading to us in front of the entire restaurant. Proceeding to ask we "not leave a bad review" when that was the last thing on our minds. When my friend asked "so you understand what was going on then?" She said YES. That was extremely uncomfortable. Also harassing & humiliating customers after ignoring us, and offering "free dessert" is completely unacceptable. It was too late. All this to say, that experience was a disgusting display of discrimination and disrespect. I am appalled. It was extremely disheartening, and not to mention, dehumanizing. That will be the last time we ever step foot in Jass Kitchen. If you want similar cuisine experience, better service, indie & quality atmosphere in close proximity: Lemoni Cafe which is next door, Mandolin which has an amazing atmosphere also down the street with similar cuisine and selection, and Tacombi, a differing cuisine of Mexican food with amazing selection and quick & quality service, which we went afterwards and they gave us amazing service to follow our ill-mannered, revolting experience. All this to say, I hope they genuinely learn from this. That experience was traumatic for us all, and quite frankly dangerous. I really hope it does not happen to someone else. read more

Definitely a great spot for a date night. We had 4 people at our table and we struggled on what to order, so we ended up over ordering but I'm so happy we got to taste so many things (& everything is very well priced) We got the trio mezze appetizer which is cool because you can pick any 3 dishes you want. We went with the tzatziki, red pepper dip and eggplant dip. It also came with warm pita. They were all amazing but the red pepper was my favorite. We also got the zucchini pancake and green salad. For entrees we all split the lamb chop, steak, branzino and clay lamb. All delicious but my favorite was the steak (the chimichurri was to die for).
