Shaking Beef Noodles
Shelly H.

Japengo is located inside the Hyatt resort and was an easy, short walk from our stay at the Westin. The outdoor patio alone is worth the visit -- the view is absolutely breathtaking, especially around sunset. We ordered the Unagi Roll ($29), Shaking Beef Noodles ($48), and the Kanpachi Kama ($37), which wasn't actually on the menu. They had run out of the Hamachi Kama (I overheard they only get about 3-5 per day), so they offered Kanpachi instead -- and it ended up being a great choice. While the prices are definitely on the higher side, that's expected at a five-star resort in Maui. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was stunning, and the food was delicious all around. For the views, quality, and overall experience, it was absolutely worth it. I'd recommend Japengo to anyone visiting Maui!

Our server Jeffrey was amazing and so genuine! We got the pork buns and Kaanapali and hawaian roll. Both amazing! Green tea and a mango cocktail! all delicious options. Oh and the views of the sunset ! You can't beat that! Highly highly recommended

Great ambiance! Went for after dinner drinks and dessert. So yummy! We sat at the bar but the seating areas looked super inviting as well. Love this new space. The bartenders were very friendly despite being very busy.

Nice location in Hyatt Regency, and if you're seated in the right spot, a great sunset. We showed up an hour before our reservation to have a couple cocktails at the bar, all was going great until another couple showed up wanting to have dinner at the bar and the bartenders tried their best to get us to leave for what I guess they expected to be a higher ticket. They even had the hostess approach us and ask if we'd checked in. 20 minutes before our reservation, so we had not. She told us a table would be ready soon. All too weird. At our scheduled time, we were called and taken to a table. We got a great spot and excellent service from Carrie. As others have nentioned, prices are pretty high, but quality was very good. Curry Dusted Calamari was super tasty but were really tiny pieces. Otoro Sashimi was excellent. Swordfish was very good, but plating was pretty bland. Still, a good dish. All in all, it was a good meal. I wish they hadn't made it so weird at the bar, but I'd go back.

Food seems to be hit or miss here. Very pricey with mediocre or bland flavors for many of the dishes, including the calamari, beef noddles, edamame, sushi, carrots, and Mac n cheese. Shrimp, lobster, and hamachi kama were good. View is gorgeous obviously since it overlooks the water. However, not enough lighting at night. I could barely see my food and needed to use my phones light. The little table lights they have weren't enough. Most of our food didn't take long to come out but two items took a long time, which should have been the easier ones (lobster tail and grilled fish which both cook fast). Most of our table was done eating by the time I got my grilled fish.

Excellent service. Easy to book online during our stay at the Hyatt. Really nice views of the ocean. Amazing sushi and chirashi don. I ordered the lychee pineapple drink they made it less sweet for me. Then we go the malasadas with the lilokoi syrup and the macadamia nut sauce omg -- so good!!!

Japengo delivered on every level. Stunning oceanfront views from the Hyatt Regency resort, incredibly fresh sushi, and flavorful Asian-inspired dishes that were delicious. Service was friendly and on point, and the cocktails were perfect for sunset. Pricey, but absolutely worth it. A must-do Maui dinner.

I went to Japengo with a party of 13. We had made reservations in advance. A couple of thoughts: - Sushi was good, fresh and tastes great - Dessert was epic and would recommend - we were seated at two separate tables which lead to different kitchen timing for Adults vs Kids table - Service was not great.. 2-3 stars at best. Not everyone was offered drinks when we sat down, when we did all finally order them (in 3 seperate waves due to the servers inability to ask us all the first time), it was about 20 minutes into the meal and 25 min after sitting down to even order I would overall recommend and hope we had a one off service experience

Really nice dinner spot in the Hyatt Regency. The oceanfront views are beautiful and the vibes are set with the dim lighting and chic décor. We started with some salads that were deliciously fresh and opened up the appetite. My bf and I split the 5 piece omakase, 2 rolls, and the garlic noodles. We were surprised by how full we ended up leaving, the rolls here are ginormous! Even though they are a staggering $30 a roll, I did feel like the size of them justified the price. Of course all the fish was super fresh and buttery, and every piece of the omakase was delicious. The chu-toro was a standout, it was really melt-in-your-mouth and rich. Other orders at the table included the shaking beef noodles and the special fish of the day, which all got great reviews too. We had a delicious bottle of sake to wash everything down, and ended the night with the ginger crème brulee. We really got to enjoy dinner and weren't rushed at all, I think we got to enjoy a good 2 hours of great conversation and food. It's definitely a splurge to come here but I think the quality and vibes make it all worth it!

I stayed at the resort and stopped by for a quick bite and drink. I didn't make a reservation and was seated at the bar. The ambiance was very intimate and beautiful views. Service was excellent, my server super attentive and fast. I tried the Ube Sour, a gin-based cocktail that was strong but balanced with the sweet ube. The fish was fresh, which I appreciated. However, the poke block missed the mark for me. The rice was hard and fell apart easily, and the poke itself didn't feel authentic. For the small portion, the price didn't feel justified. I'd be open to giving the place another shot next time.

Japengo is at the Hyatt Regency Maui and located at the lobby level and overlooks the hotel pools. We made same day reservations and was able to get a table for 4 later in the evening on a Wednesday. There was a line of people trying to make reservations also so book before or earlier. We arrived a few minutes early for the reservation and our table was ready. The restaurant is much bigger than I thought. Large covered dining area plus the dining on the newly renovated and extra large deck over looking the pool. Evening time was dark inside but the table lights were bright enough at the table and added the nice ambiance. Our server was so friendly and patient and I saw that she was on top of every request and order from all the tables in her section. Amazing skills! We ordered the white lotus mocktail, a OJ, kids Mac and cheese, curry dusted calamari, Korean seafood pancakes, pork belly bao, Rainbow and Shrimp Tempura rolls, and the blackened tuna roll. The dishes and sushi rolls are generous portions and we didn't understand or were starving. We ordered too much for the table. Even the kids Mac and cheese came in this huge bowl enough for two kids. All the sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. They were topped with this wasabi tobiko. I've never had anything like that, and I wished I had more to top other dishes. The Korea seafood pancakes were really crispy on the outside and light and doughy on the inside with the seafood. The sauce on top was great. If they had called this seafood hush puppies, I would have been happy with the order. Each piece was ginormous but didn't have much green onions. I was expecting the pancakes to have a lot more green onions. The pork belly bao buns had a nice pickled salad on top. The buns were not very fluffy but serviceable. The dish was ok. The curry dusted calamari was also just ok. Calamari was fried well and crispy. The curry dust was just not the flavor we liked. And it came with these grape halves around which didn't really go well with the calamari or flavor in my opinion. I think if we ever come back, we'll stick with the sushi menu.

Beautiful views especially around sunset, reservations highly recommended. Lychee pineapple cocktail was perfect - not too sweet , just a tad on the smaller side. Dishes were hit or miss (and very pricey)! Tofu stir fry should be completely skipped - very bland; seafood udon was super yummy (but also $50 for a relatively small portion). Ginger crème brûlée at the end was very refreshing

Amy D.

Very fresh, delicious sushi rolls with a spectacular view at sunset from their patio seating. This place is very popular! So definitely make sure you make reservations ahead of time if possible! Service was fast, friendly and took care of all our menu questions and request. Note, the sushi kitchen gets busy, so if you forget to order something with your main order, you might be waiting a long time to get it. So plan ahead! Highly recommend.

Do they use real crab for the california rolls?

Is there a kids menu available?

Yes!

Is there free parking?

There is a "beach access" parking just outside the Refency Hyatt that always had a few open parking spots. You can park there for free and walk a short distance to Japengo (just inside Regency Hyatt).

The octopus is a must!! For the main course my wife ordered the scallops and I ordered the special which was grilled Opah with two grilled shrimp served over risotto. Both dishes were the best things that we have eaten all year. At the end of dinner they provided a complimentary dessert and some of the best views and service on the island. The restaurant Manager also checked in with us to make sure that we enjoyed everything. She was very nice, professional and engaging. Our waiter and supporting staff were all amazing as well anticipating our needs and exceeding expectations. Fish taco - the fish and slaw filling was superb Birria taco - my favorite, with moist birria meat that filled the tortilla Southwest salad - made with romaine (and not organic greens) was excellent. Order a side of dressing, and chicken to make it a full meal. The tacos are street-size but filling, and the beer is cold! Out the door (with tip) for $50, which is a real bargain in Maui. I'm from South East Asian descent (and we eat a lot of coconut in our food) and I lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Possibly my standards were higher. The amount of Brussels felt like another type of croutons were added to a salad. Coconut crusted mahi.... I really wanted to like it but couldn't understand why this would be so popular. It's definitely unique with coconut rice and shaved coconut. But I still don't really taste coconut. Got the toast for dessert, not bad! Coconut jam with is pretty good. Reminds me a little of an upscale Kaya toast. Overall, this place isn't phenomenal as some reviews mention. They must have really delicious drinks with their coconut foam, we just had water. Service felt cringey and felt like he wanted to upsell us. He was around to check if we needed anything. Asked a weird question if we were from the Hyatt or Marriott, could have asked us where we were from. My mother has pretty advanced Alzheimer's and takes a long time to eat; when I let the GM know that I thought his time allowed was too short and not handicap friendly, he was SO offended and started arguing with me in front of all his customers He said "that was the way they do things"... and that "it's ok, we get many bad reviews." I was so appalled!!! Such a shame, I loved their tuna avo! I don't think the food is worth the rushed service, (their cocktails are also lackluster) but they do have a nice location by the water with pretty sunset. If corporate management changes the policy to make it a more leisurely experience, it could be worth returning. But right now this is such a rushed, high turnover diner experience, not to mention the manager's way of handling customer feedback is rather shocking. 10/20/2026 Updated review based on restaurant's response Thank you for your response but I can't fathom going back to your restaurant after this incident. When I shared my experience with friends in hospitality, food industry, or just simple restaurant goers, everyone was appalled at: 1) the short time allotment per table of 1 hour and 15 minutes as repeatedly stated by your manager (he adamantly said he would show me stacks of receipts of tables being turned over at the duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes, and that was the way "we do business at Star Noodle") 2) the way I was treated as a customer. The fact that Star Noodle has someone at managerial level to not know the basic table time allotment of 2 hours, as you shared, tells me either he's very incompetent (and the company made a mistake hiring him/neglected to train him) or you are lying. Either scenario is not good for the company or your customers. I appreciate the response but unless you replace this gentleman or somehow thoroughly train him in both knowledge and customer experience, I don't see how things can improve.

We specifically picked this restaurant because of the advertised hula show (which is in the name of…read morethe restaurant), so unfortunately, that ended up being the most disappointing part of the experience. There was only one woman performing hula, and she danced about every other song for roughly an hour. I was expecting more of a traditional show with a more consistent performance, so this felt pretty underwhelming compared to what was advertised. If you're coming specifically for the entertainment, I'd probably temper your expectations. The food, on the other hand, was pretty good overall. For entrees, I got the crab topped mahi mahi, which I really enjoyed. The fish was nicely prepared, and I especially liked the crunchy macadamia nuts, which added a great texture. The coconut sauce was delicious and complemented the fish well, but there was barely any crab on top, and I wish they had been more generous with both the crab and the sauce. We also tried the roasted pork shank, which was tasty and had a rich, pronounced pork flavor. This is definitely a dish for people who really love pork, since the flavor is quite strong. It came with risotto and onions, which had a nice tanginess that helped balance the richness of the meat. Like the fish, though, I thought it could have used more sauce. The Mai Tai was decent but wasn't particularly strong, and I was expecting a little more of a noticeable alcohol flavor. We finished with the Hula Pie, which was huge and delicious. It's made with vanilla ice cream mixed with chunks of macadamia nuts, topped with chocolate, and served in a chocolate cookie crust. I initially expected the ice cream itself to be macadamia flavored, but it was vanilla with macadamia pieces mixed throughout. Still, the combination of creamy ice cream, crunchy nuts, and chocolate was really good, and the portion was generous enough to share. An added bonus was that it was free with our hotel discount, which made it an even better deal. Overall, the food was enjoyable, and I'd say the mahi mahi and Hula Pie were the highlights. However, since we specifically chose this restaurant for the hula show, the disappointing entertainment was a pretty big letdown. I'd consider coming back for the food, but I wouldn't choose it again if I were looking for a memorable Hawaiian cultural performance.

Unfortunately, we were a bit delayed by our flight and hotel check in that we got here a bit late, after the sun had already set.....sadly, we missed that. The place was absolutely packed!.....but we had reservations, checked in, and waited about 10 minutes after our reservation time, and was then given a pretty decent table inside vs an outdoor table closer to the beach. Service was nice, friendly, and helpful.....so no complaints about that. As for the food....whilst walking to our table, we saw servers carrying trays of yummy looking fish and chips and tacos, but later found out that they were serving diners at the bar area, so these items were not available in the more "formal" Hula Grill restaurant section....bummer. Anyway, it was getting a bit late for us on California time, so we all chose to eat light...I orderd the Chilled Seafood Platter, and others in the group ordered the Grilled Fish, Roasted beets, Wok Charred Iwamoto Noodles, Seafood Poststickers, and ended everything with a huge slice of their signature Hula Pie. My Seafood Platter was served chilled with Kiawe charred sashimi grade ahi, a couple of small lobster tails, grileld and chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail, and some sides of kimchi, and wasabi. Yes, everything was very fresh and delicious, but I truly expected the portion to be much bigger, considering it's called a "Platter." Was a bit disappointed as others at our table wanted to try some of my seafood, but I had to say NO as I would be left with close to nothing to eat had I shared it. The other issue we all had was with the Lobster, Shrimp, and Scallop Potstickers. It came with a measly 5 small and flat pieces with so little stuffing that you couldn't even taste the seafood inside....even if you had put the whole thing in your mouth at once. It just need much more stuffing.....or what's the point? Whilst walking to the mens room, I walked by the kitchen and saw several plates of other dishes being put out for servers to serve to the diners......yea, the portion sizes of everything were so tiny!!! This is not something I really expected from such a restaurant......yea, the quiality may be quite good, but you'd never fill up on any of these entrees. It was a pretty good experience here, but it was more about the setting than the food.

Overall, a fun way to enjoy some of the food and atmosphere without paying for the full luau experience!

Disappointing Experience - Overpriced for the Quality…read more I haven't been to Aloha Mixed Plate in years, and I was really looking forward to coming back. My family and I visit their sister restaurant, Star Noodle, quite often, so I was expecting the same level of quality. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We visited today at 1:15 PM, and I have to say I left pretty disappointed. The shoyu chicken was dry, and the overall food quality just didn't match the price. For a family of five, our bill came out to $178, including soft drinks. That's a lot of money for a casual plate lunch experience. What was also disappointing was being told by our server that they do not offer a kamaʻāina discount. As a local, it's always nice when businesses recognize and support the community that supports them. I understand we live in a tourist destination, but the prices should still reflect the quality of the food and overall experience. Unfortunately, Aloha Mixed Plate felt more like an overpriced tourist spot than the local favorite I remembered. At these prices, I honestly wouldn't even recommend it to visitors. My recommendation? Save your money and head to Star Noodle instead. We go there often, and the quality and experience have been much more consistent. I really wanted to enjoy coming back, but sadly, this visit was a letdown. 3 stars.
