Moving here from the Bay Area it has been very difficult to find some very good Japanese spots that serve more than the traditional expected "sushi, teriyaki dishes, etc". I've been eyeballing this spot for a couple weeks now bcuz on their menu was Katsu Bowl. Most places around here Katsu Bowl is just the traditional Katsu, but at Japan Express it showed a dish that is properly known as Katsu DonBuri. Traditionally it's made with pork cutlet. Three stars for offering sushi and Japanese food in my neighborhood. The menu is legitimately Japanese. We ordered regular size Teriyaki Chicken bowls and a chicken katsu. The servings were very generous and my boys loved the teriyaki chicken. The katsu breading was a bit on the soggy side and, in my opinion, salty. We will return for the teriyaki bowls and maybe try a noodle dish next time. We ordered for pickup via Yelp via Grubhub. There was some confusion when picking up the order about if we were picking up for ourselves or for delivery to another customer. Estimated ETA on Yelp was reliable and on time. read more

Guys this place is good you definitely need to try the spicy chicken teriyaki. Be warned it has a nice kick. If you are looking to take it to the next level ask for a side of chilly sauce I don't know if that's what it's called but that's how I ask for it. I'm so sad to have to write this update but Japan Express, over the last couple of years, has really let me down. I used to order from here 2-3 times a month and always had excellent food. More recently, quality control is non-existent. Unless getting sushi, I always ordered the veggie bowl. Years ago, the veggies were hot, cooked perfectly, and the sauce was great. Now sometimes the bowl is hot, sometimes cold. Sometimes it's covered in a thick sugar sauce, sometimes it's not. Always though, the veggies are overcooked. The cabbage is like wet toilet paper and the broccoli has been steamed or boiled until the chopsticks slide through it like a steak knife in warm butter. Everything is mush. When it's covered in the thick sugar sauce, it's so sweet that it's not edible. It's as sweet as strawberry pancakes from Denny's, which is like eating birthday cake for breakfast. It's pretty obvious they have two or three cooks, each making things a different way and none of them are following Japanese recipes. I'm very sad to no longer be a patron of one of my favorite restaurants. Someone please let me know if they go back to the way things were five years ago. If you think Panda Express is authentic Asian, you'll still like Japan Express. read more

The Chicken teriyaki is so good, if it's your first definitely would recommend ordering that, idk what their teriyaki sauce is made of but I'd definitely buy a big jug if they seek it anywhere. The Service is good there nice and clean also you get to enjoy some tv and music if your eating there, make it very relaxing and enjoyable. This has been a Glendale College staff and student favorite for a long time now. I have been eating here since it opened many years ago in 1989. I stopped in at 8:30 PM hoping to sit relax with my wife after a visit to the cancer treatment ward. They closed the sushi bar at 8:30. No big deal; we were there for teriyaki bowls. They had, however, already put all the chairs and were mopping and closing up. The dining room is listed as open till 9 PM. Oh well, COVID could be to blame, but I don't like early closing. Stick to your posted hours or change them to take-out only after 8:30 PM. This was my first visit since COVID and the prices are higher than I remember: $9.49 for chicken and broccoli, $9.99 for large size spicy chicken. The portions were large, and the food hot and tasty packaged in typical black plastic non-styrofoam containers. Well cooked grilled chicken was topped with a generous amount of savory sweet teriyaki sauce. I am glad to see our old favorite has survived COVID. I will come early next time. read more

I've been coming here for YEARS! It's out to go to place for Japanese food and the basic sushi. But recently we haven't been big fans. We have come 4 times in the last 2 months and they have either closed early or not open at all even when their hours state they are open. Next they've been mixing my sushi orders and placing them all in one tray. Which is annoying when I order food for the office only to find everyone's order in one tray. I will make note to ask them to separate the orders, which they used to do until Covid. I hope next time we come their service has improved. read more

I have frequented Japan Express many times before and have always enjoyed what I order and my regular order is the combination teriyaki beef & chicken plate and a Baked Salmon Roll. Tonight, I ordered a Postmates delivery and was not at all pleased. For one, you are given the option of a 22 oz. drink and apparently, that option refers to their sauce, which has it's own section in the menu, meaning that I did not receive two drinks with the order. I also paid an extra $0.25 for an extra sauce, which I did not receive as well. The Salmon the roll was extremely dry, as if it was left in the oven too long. The roll itself falls apart when trying to pick it up. I'm not sure if there is someone new that's working the sushi bar or if it may have been forgotten in the oven, but this was very displeasing. I do not go out of my way to leave negative reviews on establishments because this may have just been a fluke, but the fact that I paid $40 for 2 entrees, a roll, and items that I did not receive, makes me very unhappy. read more

Though I had known about this place for a while, I hesitated to go because of my experiences with the likes of Kyoto Bowl. When I finally got a chance to try it last week it turned out that the food in this place is definitely superior to what you'll get in other Asian fast food establishments. The restaurant is simple, clean, and plain, and is located in one of the many strip malls that line Olive Avenue in Glendale. The food is very tasty, inexpensive, and the waiting time is quite short. Big middle finger goes out to Panda right now, Japan is my new "Express" for a quick Asian food fix. You should already know better than to get sushi from these types of places, so if you insist, just get something deep fried and smothered in eel sauce. Yes, it's an abomination to real sushi, but it's pretty darn tasty. The bowls here are cheap, and come out so fast you just KNOW it wasn't made fresh. The spicy terriyaki chicken bowl was so scrumptious that I didn't care. And for a total of around $7, I inhaled it, washed down with a bottle of Ramune soda. Delicious. read more

Well when I arrived I saw several police motorcycles out side and when I walked in there was 6 officers sitting at a table. :) it made me laugh in side. Teriyaki bowls must be the new donuts. So I walked pass the cops and up to the little counter and the thing that struck me was, "this place is small and almost out of place" It's Awesome. The white girl at the counter was a little confused when I asked if they had Sunumono salad :( she looked at me kind of funny and then the Asian man next to her said it had not been made yet. So i stuck with the rice bowl. They took my name, I filled my cup and took a seat at the long wall table since I was alone (leave the tables for groups). They called my name and I walked over and grabbed my food. The teriyaki bowl was good. The rice was cooked just rite and the sauce was sweet. This is a regular stop. Orders are prepared in good time with consistent quality. Ordering online works well and the food is always ready for pickup when I get there. Order accuracy can sometimes be a little off if you get picky with the great options for online orders. Usually the Teriyaki chicken is fresh, the Katsu is crisp and the Gyoza is good. Sushi is yummy and presentation will change depending on who is preparing it. 1 out of 10 times when the quality is off, the chicken might be overcooked and dry. read more

Hands down...Japan Express is amazing!!! The chicken teriyaki bowl is to die for....blows any other bowls at other fast food chains out of the water! The teriyaki sauce is just so perfect and the chicken is tender and yummy. The rice is ALWAYS cooked perfectly. If you like sushi....it is always so fresh and made right to order! I really dislike doing negative comments or reviews about restaurants, especially when it is a place I really like and have been to several times previously. With that being said, I just got home from picking up my order from there, and I'm sure that it will be as excellent as before.. the issue I had tonight was I ordered ahead three specialty rolls and notified them that I was on my way and I was going to decide on a fourth role from a recommendation of theirs. I was told excellent and they'll see me shortly. When I got there I checked in and told him that, I was here for my three rolls and that I needed recommendation on my fourth roll, which one of their employees, an individual named Cassandra quickly responded with a no we can't do that because we are closed for any more orders, even though they were still working making sushi rolls. Cassandra was very cold and unprofessional with the emotionless response. One other employee said that they had a role that was available that a customer did not pick up even though it wasn't one that I wanted, but would consider and I asked if there was a discount on it at all. Again quickly and cold. Cassandra responded no. Luckily, she is not an employee of mine. Otherwise I would've fired her for her lack of professionalism and cold manner and customer service. Yeah, other employee that I was dealing with was just the opposite. She was very kind and apologized for the situation. I declined taking that role meant for another customer. I plan on calling the manager in the morning and voicing my opinion a very, very unpleasant situation. I may write this Night off and give them a second chance, but I'm not sure. Cassandra was just a very cold and unprofessional person to deal with at the establishment like this. Again, the food is excellent but with this experience, I can only give it a two star rating, and that was being courteous. read more

Food is still delicious ever since they changed to go bowls or plates whatever you shall call it protein Che/stk servings are smaller they claim it haven't changed it's bull it has I ordered to large chicken bowls both paid for extra chicken I mentioned before leaving one has a smaller amount. They disagreed I came home and my son and measure it out we went the extra mile to figure this out since this has been a on going issue. At least 4 - 6 times. We were right, one bowl had way less meat than thee other. First visit to Japan Express, but won't be my last. I ordered the Obento as it has a nice sample of several dishes. It has teriyaki chicken, pork fritter, 2 gyoza (dumplings), steamed rice and a small salad. The gyoza are amazing and are delicious with a bit of sriracha. The home made tonkatsu sauce is a great complement to the breaded pork strips. The teriyaki chicken is great also and I was told it is a family recipe that they've been using for 30 years. I went here due to other good reviews. I have to say I was quite disappointed. I had the teriyaki chicken with brown rice and an ice tea. The chicken was extremely dry even some parts were crispy. They had plenty of sauce but it was really sweet. I usually like to have gamashio (sp?) which is blackened sesame seeds and flaky salt. But this place didn't have any. Maybe they put a lot of sauce to cover the dryness? The ice tea was very strongly brewed and had an off taste to it. Perhaps it was a little old and I ended up throwing it away. I was there when the lunch crowd started coming in. Seem to be fairly popular but I don't see why. The sushi that came out seemed to look good. Although I didn't have any.
