Entrance to restaurant

Like other yelpers have mentioned, this restaurant is tucked away in the ?back of strip mall on the first floor just by the stairs. The windows are tinted and therefore it is hard to know what you'll walk into. I had been told previously that this is the place that "older" "traditional" Duluth Koreans go and was therefore not surprised by the lack of yelp reviews of this restaurant. First off, Alyssa and I thought the traditional decor of the restaurant was really nice! Not sure why they wanted to hide it behind tinted windows. The restaurant was very clean and many of the seating areas were separate booths. The staff was very attentive the moment we walked in and we were handed menus with cups of tea. They spoke limited English. Alyssa ordered the Deluxe ox bone soup which had a great traditional, comforting flavor. There are pieces of cartilage which we appreciated but others might not! The strips of included meat which were not ox were overcooked and borderline dry. It does NOT come salted (which is typical). There is salt and soy sauce to add to your liking. I ordered the Hangover soup which had just a little bit of spice/heat, a little bit of meat (beef ribs?) and a lot of napa cabbage (yum!). I would have preferred more meat but I thought the flavors were fantastic. All the soups come with a side of rice. Given that we had less food than we thought, we also ordered the galbi (grilled beef ribs). It thought this was some of the best galbi I've had- I don't like it too sweet and this version of it was just right. It was unfortunately one of the most expensive things on the menu (+$20). The banchan at Jang won Jung is good but nothing to write home about. They offer 5-6 items. The waitress stopped by once to refill the dishes that we finished. Overall, we enjoyed our late lunch here and I thought it was worth driving 30 minutes to try it out. I do not think I would choose this as the first place to take out of town friends or family.

This is the definition of hole-in-the-wall. It's kind of hard to find since it's situated away from the more populated area. It was kind of difficult to figure out what to order, but we got two items. 1) Hangover Soup (8/10): we've never had Korean hangover soup so there's no benchmark, but by it pure flavor it was really good. It's mainly cabbage with some meat pieces. The broth is very flavorful and you can taste the beef flavor. 2) Premium Oxtail Soup (9/10): I have actually recently tried a different place with this dish, but this is much better. You can actually taste the beef flavor in the soup rather than having to add too much salt and pepper (you still have to for your taste but not as much as the other place). I personally like cartilage and tendon more than regular meat, so I chose the premium. But if you're indifferent, then the regular oxtail soup will be fine. The size for deluxe is also bigger than the hangover soup, but not sure what the regular oxtail soup size is. Overall, this is probably one of my favorite Korean soup place now in Duluth area. It was really filling even though it's just soup. The side dishes were good although the kimchi was slightly too soft for our taste, but we got second servings of the bean sprouts and potatoes!

Cold noodles and tofu stew

It's not the first time I've visited this place. It's a gem in the town for tofu stew! Although small dishes they have been reduced to lesser nowadays, the stew still hit the spot every single time when I was there! I ordered cold noodles for the first time after hundreds visit for tofu stew, the flavor was good but the noodles was really hard to bite. I'm not sure if it's normal as the waitress did use the scissors to cut them while serving like she knew it was necessary. But the flavors of the food was all super delicious!

Dakdoritang 닭도리탕 (Spicy chicken stew)

This is an obscure little spot with traditional Korean decor and home-style soups and stews. We swung by for dinner last night and it was relatively empty save for a few tables of elderly couples. Fair warning to non-Koreans as the waitresses speak minimal english and the english translations on the menu aren't very descriptive. For dinner we ordered: - Budaejjigae (labeled as Spicy sausage stew) $9.99 - Dakdoritang (labeled as Spicy chicken stew) $10.99 (They may seem similar but their flavors are on different ends of the spectrum.) The budaejjigae is a 3.5/5. You get all the typical ingredients: spam, sausage, tofu, kimchi, vermicelli noodles instead of the usual dduk (ricecake). There is an overload of kimchi so the soup is more sour than I'm used to. (I'm from New York where Korean food is A++) The dakdoritang is a 4/5. This stew is sweet, spicy, and savory. The flavors were there, but I would've loved to have more ingredients in my stew. It's basically only chicken (though you do get a generous portion) and vermicelli noodles. (Typically, this dish contains potatoes.) Overall, 4/5 stars as the food was good and comforting after a long day. Side dishes are good and can be refilled if you ask nicely. Pricing is great as you'd get these dishes elsewhere for $12+ here in Duluth. We'll be back for more.

Jang won jung has a nicely chosen Korean-style decor. Service was great and staff was super friendly. They brought out warm tea for me to drink as soon as I sat down. This was really nice to sip on especially since the weather was a bit cooler tonight. My mom and I ordered two dishes: #39 Kalchi Gui and Dwen Jang Jjigae (Grilled Cutlassfish and Soy bean paste soup combo) The fish was grilled to a very nice crisp texture. I was also really happy it wasn't salty. We requested that the soup be made on the bland side as this soup is often times too salty at restaurants. The soup base is salty and therefore can be salty if they use too much of the soy bean paste. I was actually kind of shocked about how salty it was even after asking for it on the bland side. My mom had to pour half of her water to dilute the saltiness. #20 Deluxe Oxbone Soup Today was one of those days where you see this on the menu and think. Yup! Gotta have it. I loved everything about the soup except the ginormous chunk of oxbone. I love oxbone but when it's too big, the texture and mush as you bite and nibble on it is a bit overwhelming. They give you a small dish with soy sauce and wasabi to dip your meat in. The flavors didn't really balance for me. I was wishing I could have Jang su Jang's (on venture Drive) wasabi soy sauce for my meat. The side dishes are mediocre. I felt all their side dishes aside from their spicy potato slices and radish kimchi could use some improvement. I didn't bother reading yelp reviews prior to coming here, but perhaps I shall have to try their hwejang gook next time as it seems to be a popular item.

I absolutely love this concept and I want to come back for every single soup. I got the regular galbitang and it did not disappoint. This restaurant soft-opened in March 2024 and officially opened in April 2024 in the old Breakers Korean barbecue space near the defunct Gwinnett Place Mall, and I-85 at Pleasant Hill Rd (exit 104). It's spacious, but can fill up quick. We arrived at noon on a Saturday and there were still plenty of open tables. However, by the time we left, shortly after 1pm, it was packed with people looking for tables. Someone jumped on our table as we were getting up to leave. This is not a sit-down restaurant. Instead, you order at one of two touchscreen kiosks at the entrance and then wait for your number to be called to pick up your food. Everything is self-serve, from condiments to hot broth. You also bus your own table. Here's what three of us got: B3. Heo [sic] Naengmyeon ($16.99) - spicy sweet potato starch noodles with raw fish (should be spelled "hoe") C3-B1. Naengmyeon and Yuk Jeon ($20.99) - cold sweet potato starch noodles and thinly sliced beef pancake C1-B1. Naengmyeon and Dwaeji Yang Nyum Gui ($18.99) - cold sweet potato starch noodles and grilled pork neck D4. Kimchi Son Mandu ($11.99) - handmade kimchi dumplings My wife and I love naengmyeon. We thought Naju's version was good, especially in this fast-casual format. To nitpick, the noodles stuck together and the ice melted too fast. Regardless, I found the noodles to be delicious, refreshing, and satisfying. The spicy version came with a small bowl of icy broth on the side. The raw fish, beef pancake, and grilled pork neck were all tasty and of decent quality. As for the handmade kimchi dumplings, they were legit. Big and filling. In addition to naengmyeon, Naju also offers a variety of Korean soups (e.g., seolleongtang - ox bone soup and gomtang - beef bone soup) and LA galbi (grilled short ribs). During our visit, the pickup counter was staffed by a bunch of ajummas (Korean middle-aged women), basically Korean lunch ladies. I'd come back. This place seems ideal for a quick stop for an easy and reliable Korean meal / comfort food.

I do not feel as though downtown Duluth truly captures the amazing food scene of the city, but again, an old friend did like it enough to tell me about it. Inside was pretty spacious. High ceilings and bright. You have to go up front and order, and they'll give you a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready. Pretty standard so far. It's not too loud, even with the music playing in the background, so not bad for hanging out with friends after the food is done, though we didn't. We were all pretty disappointed with our food. It wasn't bad, thankfully, it was just meh. We could've literally drove 5 minutes away for better, so we left as soon as we finished. The good thing is you get to choose what protein you want with your dish, which is nice. However, the chicken katsu here is thin. Also, the K-Fried chicken doesn't really mesh with the pasta. It's like a skewer on the side of your main dish. You can eat them separately and be happy enough. I was ok with the bulgogi, but I would've expected better from a Korean establishment. I haven't tried every single protein option, but I won't lie, tofu in pasta isn't the most appealing to me. For the main dishes, it was pretty bland, especially the omurice. You need the egg and the protein for flavor. The Schezwan pasta wasn't even spicy. At least the carbonara was creamy as it should be.

"Mom's Kitchen Table", a literal translation to their business name, lives up to the name itself, no lie. The mom definitely uses fresh ingredients and put that extra care/preps to deliver the full spectrum of Korean home meals to the line - taste the banchans here and you will understand. A bit over-seasoned at times. but considering these are complimentary to rice, the main dish of a Korean meal, it is meticulously arranged to give the neutral umami you seek. One worry I have when I discover gems like this - the owner/mom must stay healthy and never retire, so everyone who are curious can experience it, at least once in their cycle. People who frequent other Korean restos may feel this restaurant is a bit pricey (a few bucks or so), but I will gladly pay for that few delta so I can have the best Korean home meal available in the area, period. First let me rave about the banchan selection - not only is there 10 different banchan, they are quality banchan (see pics) ... my favorites were the anchovies w/ peanuts, spicy raw squid, radish kimchi, and shiitake mushrooms. The menu selection is your usual traditional Korean dishes and the prices may seem high but competitive w/ other Korean restos - and very worth it when you think about all the tasty banchan accompanying your meal. Shortly after we were seated, (literally 1-2 minutes) about 3 employees came to our table letting us know we needed to order within the next few minutes. It was like 10:05. I tried asking one of the employee what the meat options were and was just interrupted by him being persistent in us ordering and did not really answer our questions, mainly because I noticed some of the meat options were pork and I do not consume pork for personal reasons.
