I ordered the Croaker Fish Entree. The presentation looked good. I immediately try some of the fish. The 1st piece was ok. As I begin to get a little bit more. I realized there is so much SALT on this fish that it would give you high blood pressure. I try my sides. The rice is crunchy not cooked thoroughly. I love the food at Jam Doung. I live in Arlington but typically stop here to grab takeout after getting my hair braided nearby. I typically get their oxtails or curried goat with cabbage and Mac n cheese or rice & peas. Also can't forget their yummy coco bread. They seem to have a pretty extensive menu and I'd like to try some of their seafood dishes if I can ever pry myself away from the oxtails & goat. I also love that their meals come in small, medium, and large sizes so u can get just the right size for your budget and appetite. They also have different specials that are very inexpensive. As far as drinks, like most Caribbean restaurants they have a nice variety of tropical sodas and juices from which to choose. I've yet to try anything here that I haven't liked. The customer service at this establishment is terrible. The spot is no frills. Very small. Hot. Crowded. The person at the register has a horrible attitude. The cooks are a little nicer. The restaurant does accept credit card payments with a minimum sale of $10 and they have an ATM inside. The food is okay. Not the best Jamaican food and not the worst. For a quick stop this place is fine. I expected more from this spot. I did like being able to order a combo of the jerk chicken and oxtails. The prices are reasonable and they have all the staple Jamaican foods. I wouldn't recommend this place to others unless you were in the area and wanted a quick fix. I bought a small plate of oxtail and jerk wings a week ago from this restaurant. I came to the restaurant around 5pm. The wings were very dry and tasted old. As if they were sitting for hours and reheated up with added jerk sauce. The taste of wings were alright, but it could've been better if it was served to me FRESH! on another note, my small plate of oxtail received 3 mini pieces of oxtails. As well, during eating my food I discovered a black/grey piece of hair throughout my rice! Very disgusted! I contacted the restaurant and no one hasn't gotten back with me to resolve this issue. What strikes me as different from some of the spots that you'll encounter as you might in Flatbush, BK is that the staff is pleasant and the dining area is simple yet welcoming. That meal was so nasty and salty, rice was soggy, the chicken stew salty and the cabbage wasn't good either-so mushy with thickly cut carrots. I come here all the time. Just had it again today. The food is always fantastic. Flavorful and very authentic. However, as many others have stated, the service is not all that great. Sometimes the cashier is very nice and friendly, sometimes they barely speak. Depends on the day I guess. Since it's not a sit down restaurant, that doesn't effect me much. OMG...how can people call this place amazing?? I went in there with high hopes today. Please note, I love Jamaican food and eat it often and whenever/wherever I can find it. Well, maybe it was an off day for this place, but NOTHING I ordered was very good or noteworthy and I tasted MUCH of the menu. I ordered: -Curry chicken -Curry goat and oxtail combo platter -Jerk chicken (white meat) Of these, the curry chicken was 'decent' the oxtail very bland and bleh, the jerk chicken just downright bad. Granted I eat white meat, but this chicken was so dry they really had no business sending it out of the kitchen. Almost inedible it was so dry. And little flavor. I did forego the 'sauce' but good jerk doesn't need sauce! I can do far better jerk chicken in my oven with Walkerswood or Grace from the jar! I didn't try the goat. Ok so I had been to this spot some time ago, and the food was exceptional back then. The only issue was parking. I was passing yesterday and was actually able to pull right up to a space and park. It had moved around the corner and was much larger. When I went in, I was greeted pleasantly by Mama, Grace, and Shazia, all professional, friendly and beautiful ladies. I ordered and then ended up ordering a meal for my husband and I to share. The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered 2 lunch specials, 2 beef patties, and 2 chicken patties. So I got the jerk chicken sandwich which was quite good, and I definitely had chicken left over afterwards. This is kind of a do-it yourself sandwich where they give you the bread on the side, and absolutely nothing else goes on it. Still good. Now the Mac and cheese on the other hand... it was absolutely awful. Objectively a terrible tasting dish. I came at the end of the day so maybe it was just a bad old batch, but it was extremely sour and tasted like someone who knows nothing about Mac and cheese made it. I am a food snob. I think my palate is pretty hard to please. And I am proud of this fact. I go to this viby event and peep this lady with her hot holding station all set up. We chat it up nicely and I tell her that I loved Jamaican food when I was in Jamaica. Although I didn't directly say it, I pretty much told her I longed for the type of Jamaican food that could ONLY be found in Jamaica. We even discussed my love for Haitian food. Now I know every Caribbean group THINKS that they have the best rice and peas but I indirectly assured her that Haitian rice was the best. The calm over her face let me know that she was not about to strike me. Instead she calmly said, "Oh yes. Haitian rice is very good." The trap was set! She then asked if I like spicy food. I told her that I indeed liked spicy food and that I have a higher threshold for spices than most Americans. She recommended that I try her dirty rice and jerk chicken. I agreed to try her chicken but in the back of my mind I was hoping for dark meat. She opens the lid and of course its mostly white meat pieces. And the chicken LOOKED dry. But I had committed so here we go. The chefs mother in law offered me sauces for my rice. The chef intercepted that idea. "No. Let him try it without the sauce. The sauce will only take away from the spice." Ok lady. You know your food that well? We will see. [Epilogue] So I have obliterated everything Jamaican from my plate. And I stand by that statement. Chicken bones are not Jamaican. They are just chicken. Animals don't have states that represent them. But even if they did, they probably got that chicken from America. It all happened pretty fast. I now no longer know if gel of rice, Haitian rice or Jamaican dirty rice are the best rice dishes. But if we just compare it to the rice in Jamaica, I can't say that it was not as good or better than any of the dirty rice I had in Jamaica. As a foodie, I do remember that she put some leaf in the dish and I had no idea what type of leaf it was. This is a good thing. It's always good to discover a new flavor/ingredient. The rice was so good that I ate all of it before I started on the chicken. My rationale was simple. 'No way that dry looking chicken will be this amazing. Better just enjoy this rice'. So the chicken as it turns out, is elite. Let me put it into perspective. The DC area has tons of Peruvian chicken places. And Peruvian chicken is great (MSG enhances the flavor). But this jerk chicken towers over all of them. If I'm in the market for grilled chicken, I would just go there and never spend my money on Peruvian chicken. I would rather just eat her jerk chicken. As in, be exclusive. This food was so good, that it humbled me. I am always humbled when I am in the presence of culinary greatness. If I had an event, I would ask for her to cater it. In closing, the only criticism I really have is of the people of the DMV. I was told they do not make Irish moss because it is not in high demand. Yall need to get it together.
