If you're looking for a place nestled in the hood in DC, where the women who serve you are the ones who will crack jokes about your attire, throw a momma joke or two, but at the same time do it with a smile and give you the dankest bit of Jamaican food so good that it should but won't make your drug test show up positive....this is the place to go. Woke up in a mood for island food, and usually the spots that are good are the ones that take a bit of traveling to get to. This was definitely one of those spots. With a menu written in chalk, and a bigger kitchen in the back than actual store front - you can tell food was given all the TLC and less of the riff raff. This is the type of place that has no seats and just wants to serve you and let you go about your day and those are the BEST places to dine at. If you're looking for an ELITE experience, depending on the type of person you are you may or may not get it here. Oxtail was so juicy and fell right off of the bone! Rice and cabbage was delicious, our order came out quickly!

I was introduced to Jam Doung about a year ago. For a while I didn't tell many people about it because I wanted to keep it my little secret. However, I recently decided to bring a few of my friends here to see if they would fall in love with it as much as I did. Well, they certainly did! Let's start this review by saying that this food is definitely the real deal. The restaurant is literally a hole in the wall. There is no room inside to sit, only standing room for placing orders. There is a kitchen located in the rear where all the magic happens. I believe the restaurant is owned by a woman and her husband, since I typically see them in every time I have been. There are also a couple of others that I have seen working too, but I think they may be family. Once you walk inside, you simply order your food at the counter. The food is decently priced ($6-13. Most entrees come with 1-2 sides and you can order plates in small, medium and large. I usually order the curry shrimp with cabbage and rice and peas. Obviously, I always order the large. It is definitely a healthy serving of food. I could probably split it up into two meals, but I usually eat it all in one sitting. I would also recommend the plantains and the patties. Overall, this is an authentic, straightforward and no frills dining experience. If you like good Jamaican food it is definitely the spot to go. This spot is literally a hole in the wall. Walk through the door, there is a counter, a wall and behind it a moderate hole of a kitchen. At the counter is a woman that looks like she doesn't enjoy life. However, she was nice enough to answer my questions and give me what I was looking for. The food was pretty good. The oxtails weren't full of fat and actually had meat on the bones. The curried goat was tender and not too oily. My only complaint was the coco bread. Not the best that I've ever had. Tasted too much like italian bread. The prices are good and it's located right on North Capitol, so I can grab it right before hitting the highway. Give it a try. read more

I must say I'm very disappointed!!! Terrible customer service. They got my order wrong and didn't offer to remake it. The manager was trying to say I can get a discount on my next order. NO! If you get my order wrong you need to make it right for a paying customer. She then said if everyone calls back and she gave them a a free meal she wouldn't be in business or something like that. That's not the point. I ordered something and didn't get what I asked for. The food was just OK anyway. To give them the benefit of the doubt, they did mention that they was the information was presented to them through a good delivery app caused uncertainty. However, if you are uncertain, confirm. These are the nicest people I've met in a long time. I'm a long time Yelper .... before you fools knew it existed lol Let's talk about this nice family who has been in this spot for 17 years. In January of this year one of their regulars robbed them and shot the MIL four times. Today was my second time coming to the establishment. The first time everything was ok no problems. But this time I can in around 11:30am for the lunch special. There were three people in front of me and not one time did any of us get greeted. They look you straight in your face and wait for you to speak!!! Upon my turn to order I ordered at the cash register. A woman came from the back and the cashier told the woman "I just took her order." The other woman stated "Do you want to give me her order." I'm waiting for her to repeat what I order. She looks at me for me to tell her what I order. What's the point of having a cashier if she isn't the one to take the orders? The woman goes to the back to get my order. She places the order on the counter for the cashier to bag. The cashier then rings up my order after the woman places it on the counter. I paid with a card. She hands me my card and receipt. I proceed to get out of the line. She states "Can you sign that." I'm thinking did you ask me to sign it? At some places you don't need to sign. If you don't ask me to sign or give me a pen, I assume there wasn't a need to. The lunch special comes with a soda. I had to ask the cashier about the soda. I asked what kind of sodas are available; since you cannot see over the counter if your under 5'6. She states "only RC and orange Fanta are cold." I replied that's fine it does not have to be cold what do you have? She repeats "only RC and orange Fanta are cold." I stated just give me the RC, because I am over her and her attitude. If you don't want to provide customer service maybe you should get another job!!! The food was ok. I want a beef patty and cocoa bread, but was told they only had chicken patties. Who wants a chicken patty!! I ordered the curry chicken lunch special; which comes with rice/ peas, cabbage and a soda. The chicken was ok could have been seasoned better. The rice and peas were soggy from the extra sauce from the chicken, rice was over cooked, hard and bland. As stated in other reviews there is no sense of urgency, customer service, or pride here. I ordered a long oxtail and ask them to put it in separate containers which seem to be a problem they oblige and gave me the oxtail in a small sides container and my rice in a small meal container the cashier continuously asked if I want gravy on my rice I said no because I like to see my rice I'm Haitian so I know what fresh rice looks like. I REALLY REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS PLACE. I have basically given up on Jamacian food in the DMV from the ones I have tried... I gave this my last shot. I am Caribbean and from NY so great flavored food & decent prices are my normal. I'm willing to pay more if its worth it, that's never the problem even here ($34 with tip wasted). But many places are over-priced and under - flavored, developed, or portioned. This was the one place I just new it was going to be a hit. But it was a miss. I ordered a combo meal oxtail and jerk chicken and a beef patty. I really didn't want the rice (tryna watch my carbs) so the very nice woman offered to put more cabbage than rice in which I agreed. Everyone was very friendly and the place was nice and clean. I get excited to tear into my meal and to my surprise... mi get tree likkle pikni peice oxtail and some likkle chop chicken peice. I recieved 3 tiny oxtail pieces and the jerk chicken I ordered dark meat and its like they chopped up a leg in tiny pieces and shreds and half a peice of a very small thigh. Relative to a child's hand full of chopped chicken was what I recieved placed on top of cabbage. However, I did get the big side of the container filled with cabbage (as If I wanted $23 worth of cabbage *upset*), and one small(of the 3 spaces) side packed with rice. The flavor was okay I guess but I think I was just so disappointed with my portion that I couldn't consider anything else. Not sure if I would try it again. But I DEFINITELY WILL NOT GET A COMBO. I feel ripped off. Ummmm... and the beef patty would have been okay but there wasn't much beef inside and I kept chewing on hard pieces that I had to spit out. Couldn't finish it. Idk if they were bones or grizzle or what. Nothing I've ever experienced before. But yeah it's a no for me. I'm glad others enjoyed it but I didn't get a great experience on the food side. I stumbled on this place whilst on Uber eats trying to figure out what to eat and it did not disappoint. I got the jerk chicken & wings entree with a pattie. The taste of jerk was so authentic (which has been hard to find in the DMV lately) I couldn't stop eating. I ordered small portions (because of past bad experiences) but wished I had gotten bigger portions. I wonder how come I didn't know about this place but it's my new go to spot. Everything was so delicious, only thing is the wings were more like wingettes. However I will be back and spread the word. If you want to eat here, don't order through Eat24! I placed an order and when I went to pick it up they refused to give me the food because they said they hadn't gotten a fax confirming my order had been paid for. When I tried to show them my email confirmation they refused to look at it and said they needed a fax confirming my order. I was in there an hour before they gave me my food or offered a refund. Needless to say, the service needs some work. The food was mediocre as well. I ordered the jerk chicken sandwich, and it literally just jerked chicken in a side container and the bread foil wrapped separately. I had to cut the break myself and put the jerk chicken in it, at which point the sandwich was dry because it was just chicken and bread. The chicken did taste awesome though and was seasoned and cooked well. I also had rice and peas and the rice was soggy and tasted overcooked. The mac and cheese was lacking and was really bland. Overall, taking into account the experience and the mediocre taste of everything but the chicken, this place is not worth the visit. read more

My first time ever the food was great but the customer service was a little challenged! I thought everyone has a bad day! Let's try again! Food was ok but customer service was not so good! Yelp! Gave it a 3rd shot and it was horrible! Paid extra for additional sides only to get home and realize I didn't get the sides I paid extra for! Shame on me for not checking before I left! Love this friendly Jamaican restaurant. I am always greeted with a smile and a hello when I walk into Jam Doung. The macaroni and cheese is baked and delicious. It takes like mac & cheese my auntie would make. The rice and peas are pretty great. I feel like the servings are kind of small be it small, medium, or large. Portions come in 3 sizes and I was responsible and went with a small. It was definitely enough food for me. The meal was very good! IMO, they're tied for the best Jerk Spot in the DMV. They're very stingy with their oxtails. Got two large plates and they were definitely not worth it. The portion size was very small and honestly we should've gotten the small size instead and saved $7 each because there's no difference. I don't know why other people said the portion size was a lot. The large size didn't look like the pictures on here. There was alot more rice than meat even though the rice was supposed to be a "side dish" and the meat was supposed to be the "main dish". Also the macaroni looked just like noodles with cheese holding them together. read more
