No one just 'ends up' at Jalama Beach. You go there with a purpose. For many, it is the remote location away from civilization that features precious beaches with white sands and surfrider sized waves. Jalama is also one of the few beaches accessible by vehicle that remains somewhat "untouched." For hikers, this is also the closest trailhead to reach Point Conception Lighthouse by foot (permit and low tides required). While I definitely venture to Jalama Beach for some well-needed time with Mother Nature, I have an underlying intention of getting my hands on their decadent Jalama Burger. While the Jalama Beach Store is also known for their Clam Chowder and Chili, I can't seem to drive all that way without simply ordering their burger. The Jalama Burger requires both hands to hold based on size/weight, in addition to avoid seagulls that swoop in for a taste. The burger comes on a perfectly toasted sesame seed bun, half an inch thick beef patty, tomato slice, large red onion slices, shredded lettuce, cheese (optional) and a special sauce similar to thousand island. You can't go wrong with adding chili on top, or a side of onion rings or fries (you are in onion ring country, so choose wisely). While I have eaten many burgers on the Central Coast, this is truly one of the best! I bring out of town guests here for the windy mountainous drive, scenery and this burger.
A few tips prior to your visit:
- Jalama is pronounced "Ha-la-muh."
- Be sure to check the weather and road conditions in advance. The road is windy and close to one lane in many sections that can feature slides after rains. With this said, drive on the far right side of the road--don't hog the passage.
- Dogs are welcome with an additional fee and must be kept on leash.
- Go early, particularly on the weekend, to avoid waiting 45 minutes or longer for your food order.
- If you entered the park simply to eat, let the gate operator know to receive one free hour parking pass. Be sure to get it stamped by the store!
- Watch your head if you're tall upon entering. The ceilings are low, plus many of their store items for sale are hanging from the ceiling.
- The burger comes with a tasty secret sauce, but you can always request mayo, mustard, ranch and ketchup for your fries or onion rings.
- Staff is rarely friendly, with the exception of one gal, so know your order before entering and don't encroach upon the pick-up counter (staff pet peeves).
