You know if I have to get on here, it's got a point of near desperation. Picture if you will a dinner for two. The waitress staff were... shall we say not too bright. I had had a rough day at the office, had not had a steak in months, and was really looking forward to this. I knew the night was doomed, when the waitress was taking our drink orders and my vodka tonic arrived. Yes, I ordered Kettle One, yes it was on the rocks, and yes it had limes.. just like I ordered. But, here is the rub. The tonic was so flat, it was none existent of that wonderful Co2. I mean flat. I examined it at legnth. Not one bubble. 0. Not even a brisk stir, nor a shake could produce a whisper of micro bubble. I called the waitress over and explained my drink was flat. "Oh, so sorry about that. I am not sure what is going on, let me take it back". Well, that she did and then returned empty handed. "I think the Co2 thingy is not working, so can I get you some thing else?" God help me. I felt like pouring the drink over the managers head. You see I don't blame the staff, I blame management. If they can not make sure every thing in a bar is fully operational before opening, what else don't they do? That is the scary part. One would think the bar would have new, unopened back up bottles of Schweppes ready to go in case of such an event. But no. Lazy, cheap and just plain uncaring. I think it comes down to not giving a shit. Harsh you may think, but fair comment I say. I settled for a glass of Champaign. Now, onto the steak. Prime Sirloin, done medium/rare. It arrived dry, and just not how I remembered my steaks from Jak's. My date ordered here meal and it arrived swamped with Broccoli. She ordered some thing like spicy shrimp. She got maybe 4 and the rest of the dish was swamped in vegetables. Like a filler when you know your trying to skimp on the shrimp to save money and hope that by piling on a lot of cheap vegetables some one won't notice. Nice try. And lastly, the wine. You see I know my wine. I really do. I have been collecting and sampling for years. I know that even a modest bottle of Molly Dooker Boxer Shiraz needs to be decanted. I know that deep inside that wonderful bottle of pure nectar lay parts of the vines, leaves and twigs that need to be parted from the liquid. (I exaggerate here, but you get the point) No, our not too bright, low IQ staff just opened and poured with out a care in the world. Perhaps my expectations are too high. Or maybe it was the day before July 4th and all the "real" staff were away. Either way, do your self a favor and head down town to El Guacho or Morton's. I know I am. read more

The food is good, really good. Customer service, however, is appalling. I went there Saturday night with my mother. She was having a bad day, so i though dinner out might cheer her up. When we got inside we were told there would be about a twenty minute wait, which was understandable, so I left my phone number, and they actually ended up calling us ten minutes later. By that point, i was across the street making a purchase, so I sent my mom over so she could get seated. I was shocked to find that when I got inside, my mom was STILL waiting--apparently, despite having just seen us ten minutes ago, the hostess refused to seat my mother because I wasn't there. She simply shrugged, saying "sorry, company policy". Waiter sevice at jaks is usually fine, but I have consistently found that the hostesses always seem to have attitude problems, and on this particular night, it actually ruined my evening. For many years, Jak's in West Seattle was my all-time favorite Seattle restaurant. I have dined there hundreds of times with wonderful food and exceptional service. However, on my last 5 visits while the service has been great the food has been deplorable. Not sure what has been happening but there is absolutely no quality control in the kitchen. At first we thought it was a fluke and only happening during the lunch hour but witnessed the same ineptness on a mid week dinner and Sunday brunch. With the many fine dining options available in Seattle, Ken and senior management most definitely need to start watching and TASTING what's coming out of the kitchen. read more

for a Friday evening, we were seated promptly. cocktails were ample. we had the bacon wrapped scallops and the calamari strips for appetizers, both were good; I would recommend them. each appetizer was enough for two people (there were 4 of us). wine list is somewhat limited but not bad. Lobster tail was done to perfection. the beef wellington, very good. Beef is advertised as "corn-fed from Nebraska", so if you're picky about your beef take that into consideration. I went there tonight to get the wedge salad with salmon. What a disaster that was even from the presentation to the taste of the salmon. It normally comes out nicely presented with some hot fresh bread. I didn't even get the bread or offered the bread. The salad was already mixed together and there were missing ingredients on it. We've come here twice for my birthday dinner and both times the wait is 1.5 hrs, to which we leave and go to a different restaurant. The times we were fortunate enough to get a table, we like it a lot. When will this restaurant start taking reservations?! This is ridiculous they don't take reservations- we go out of our way to go there and then ultimately leaving due to ridiculous wait times. Tonight we left and went to The Met with little wait time. Fine steaks, and prices to match, but the portions and the extras are big enough to share (and we did). A place to bring your date (if you want to impress her) or your parents (if you want to borrow money). Service is good, if not as stiff or as fawning as you'd find in other upscale restaurants. This place is great as a nice dining spot, or for a quick tasty lunch. If you haven't tried their Jak's Burger it's an award winning burger made from ground up steaks, a friend of mine described it as "the burger Jesus would eat" it's freaking amazing. It's one of the best burgers in Seattle. Try it with the Tillamook Cheddar, skip the bacon. The bacon is excellent but it overpowers the excellent burger flavor. The next on the list as a "Must Try" is their Steak Sandwich. The Steak is so tender that it's softer than the bread it sits on, and the bread is pretty soft. Super juicy, VERY TASTY! We tried this place twice. We received poor service for dine in lunch. It wasn't busy, the waiter just didn't come around. Two items out of four were incorrect on a pick up order. The first item was charged as full price but we only received a side. A second item was tagged correctly on the box but didn't contain the correct order. We were visiting the West Seattle Fest on Saturday July 11th and decided to stop in for dinner. We waited inside the door at the greeter station for well over five minutes while the greeter was on the telephone. She looked at us a number of times but never acknowledged us. Since she was too busy to seat us we found another place that was more willing to take our money. (pardon me while i plagerize from one of my earlier reviews) in the past year, i have traveled to japan, argentina, and europe and had steaks there. i have eaten at steakhouses across our own fine country. i consider myself a pretty trustworthy and objective reviewer of this particular staple of the human diet. i will admit, that when it comes to steaks, i am incredibly picky. my friends have stopped recommending their favorite steak houses because i always come back with a ho-hum review. after doing plenty of yelp searches and eating lots of bad steaks, i finally made my way across the west seattle bridge to jak's. in a word, it was GREAT. and that's even before you take the price into consideration. my favorite cut is the ribeye ("cooked" as rare as they will let me). filets have a better texture, but i don't think you can beat the flavor of a ribeye. so i went to jak's last night, and for $30, got a big appetizer salad, 2 potato pancakes, broccoli and carrots, and an 18-ounce ribeye. the meat was well marbled and had a fantastic flavor to it. i ate at the bar and the bartenders were extremely friendly. the bar patrons were also friendly. all-in-all, it was just a great experience. so much so, that i returned the next day to try their burger. i had heard that it was a great burger, and since i am on a quest to find the best burger in america, i had to try it. itwas pretty good... i would rate it tied for second (ahead of sport restaurant, tied with palace kitchen, and far behind red mill burger) as far as seattle hamburgers are concerned (though i have yet to try Stell's). there are few restaurants that i get so excited about that i insist on bringing my friends.... this is one of them. this is 5-stars well deserved. read more

Visited this restaurant for a friends' birthday. Not bad as the steaks and burgers were at a large portion. The waiter made a mistake and brought out an extra serving of salad ( no charge) so we couldn't waste it and brought it to go. (It was soggy the next day but it was a given). I want to like Jak's, especially since I live 3 blocks away. Six of us went there last Saturday. The wait was 45 minutes so I gave them my cell number then went up to Beer Junction. Got the call pretty close to 45 minutes later. They put us in a booth, kind of tight for 6 adults, but we managed. I got the Cowboy Ribeye ($38, 20 oz, bone in). I ordered it medium-well. It came medium at best. Whatever spices/seasoning they put on was too salty for me. Also, the bone must have been 6-8oz. I have to admit that my friends steaks did not have a bone that big. The garlic mashed potatoes were ok, if a little dry. All in all I felt the steak was not worth the money, even though it comes with a salad, veggies and a potato. The atmosphere is also pretty casual for the price and the wait. Honestly I think a Keg has better atmosphere, shorter wait time, and better steaks. read more

I am a business owner from New Mexico and was on vacation and the hotel we stayed in recommended Jaks. My wife check theses reviews and found about 254 reviews. We went there and the place is very busy, which did not affect business and service one bit. The wait staff greeted us and a pleasant gentlemen came up and offer to get us a drink while we waited. I watched as they served a great number of people in one evening. Everyone seemed pleased and satisfied.. What bothered me as a business owner is that you serve thousands of customers a month and there is only 254 reviews. People are typically lazy and won't review unless they had a bad experience, and they are a very very small percentage of the clientele, but when weighed out with a small number of reviews it mAkes the place of business look bad. Jaks was top notch and I would more then recommend them and will tell a lot of others. Great steaks, fish, bread, desserts.....you name it. It was good. People should get off their lazy butts and write the good reviews businesses deserve. No you can't please everyone, but we can drown out their voice when they get on their soap box and start their bashing. read more

We stumbled upon this place on our trip to Seattle. All we can say is how fortunate we were to eat at this restaurant without reading any review or even knowing this place ahead of the time. It was a weekday early evening and we waited for roughly 30 min. I had the NY strip and my gf had the sirloin. These are THE BEST steaks I've ever tasted. It's on the par of Donovan's at San Diego but less expansive. The staff is very knowledgeable. He explained detail on what each cut is. Just to think about it makes me want to go to Seattle again. what can i say? i love jaks. the steak here is delicious and i've been to many steakhouses in the day. though they're not prime beef like daniels broiler always boasts about, jaks steaks are seasoned and cooked to perfection. in my opinion, it is because of this that i give jaks the edge. service wise, they are good, not as good as daniels (daniels service is excellent), so i give daniels the decision there. for service and quality of food, this battle ends in a draw. order the ny strip with potato pancakes, that is a great dish. be forwarned though, this place is busy and parking is hard to find at times, so expect to wait a little while read more

Steaks are always cooked to order. Lobster mac and cheese is divine, and the potato cakes are perfectly seasoned and lightly crispy with a bit of a chew. Nice! . I went to JaK's for brunch on a Saturday. The decor is *meh* and the covered carpet tiles all over the ceilings and walls are covered with five years' worth of dust. I ordered their potato pancakes and was quite underwhelmed - not crispy, kinda mushy, and under salted. I never add salt to my food, especially at a restaurant, and I had to add several shakes to my pancakes to make them have any flavor whatsoever. The fruit bowl I ordered was tiny and most of the fruit was good, minus a couple of squishy/bruised grapes. The service was mediocre, not friendly and minimum attention was given. They had some cheap brunch drinks that were decent. Maybe this place is a great place for steak, but I won't be going back for brunch, that's for sure! read more

We have eaten at Jak's many times. We have always enjoyed our meals at Jak's. This evening my wife decided to try the Mac & Cheese Lobster entree. It turned out to be a mistake, very disappointing. The pasta was on a par with the Kraft boxed mac & cheese, not good. The "Lobster" was chunks of what tasted like a farm raised salt brine shrimp. It was translucent and tastless. This I might add was a $26.00 entree. It was at best cafateria food. My beef skewers were, as usual excellent. Also, the service was very good. read more

My 3 star rating is based on its comparible's like Daniels, gaucho, ruth's chris etc. I am not being a snob as if I were comparing it to Outback of course it would be 5 stars, but for what it is it left something to be desired. I ordered the Fliet Mignon medium rare with flying saucer style potatoes (potato pancake on top of mashed potatoes) and a side of demi glace. The steak wasnt overcooked but it felt like it was, the cut just didnt seem very good, a bit tough for a filet and bland. I just wanted to try their demi glace but ended up dipping most of the steak into it. Also there were large chunks of fat on the edge of the steak, something ive never had to deal with at a high end restaurant. Potato pancakes reminded me of denny's hashbrowns, mashed potatoes were good but nothing to write about. Maybe I will return and try one of the prime steaks like the sirloin or porterhouse but the filet was unimpressive. read more

I took my boyfriend to Jak's for his birthday. I was nervous at first, as a vegetarian its often difficult to find something for myself to eat in a steakhouse, but my worries were for not. I not only was able to eat but I was able to eat well, the grilled veggie skewers and potato pancakes were delicious and I had a ton of leftovers. Our waiter was very polite and attentive, and made wonderful recommendations. Our table was upstairs where we were able to have a quiet, romantic dinner. Solid, consistent service, and the food. Sometimes we indulge a little at lunch and grab the burger. You can't even say "The Burger" in my workplace without getting everyone salivating. It's almost like we're Pavlov's dog, and the words "The Burger" is the bell. I also enjoy coming in on date nights with the wife, she is completely infatuated with their filet, and the Porterhouse is my go-to date night Steak. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. When you order a steak, you're getting an entire 3 course meal. I try and go back every couple of years and every single time I am disappointed. For a $100+ bill for two I expect so much more. First of all they don't take reservations...what?!? The last time we went was in huge celebration. We sat down and ordered wine. I asked the server about a particular wine and all she could tell me was it was good. I tried to press for details and she recited what was written in the menu. We ordered our steak, waited, waited, waited, after about 45 minutes got a salad that looked like it was poured out of a bag. The bread was worse, store bought and barely warm. Finally after an hour of waiting we got our steaks. The steaks were good, the potato and fixings were disappointing with only sour cream and chives, not even butter. And the veggies were something I could have made better at home. The service was mediocre at best while the table next to us was being attended to right and left. I've been in Seattle for 6 years but was a farmboy in my youth, and spent my formative years around meat. I hail from Nebraska, just like the steaks at Jak's. Unlike the steaks at Jak's, I am not tender and delicious (well, perhaps a bit tender). Went to Jak's again last night again, and had a terrific dinner. Tasty salad with bleu cheese, Ribeye (medium), garlic mashed taters, broccoli, side of shrooms, Broken Halo IPA (on tap) to wash it down. Tasty as always, big portions, and MUCH better value than other much pricier places in Seattle (Metro Grill, I'm-a-talkin' to you). I've had a few different cuts here, but always go back to the ribeye (for those not aware, it's by far the "purest" cut of beef -- you can tenderize/season/marinade your way around some cuts, you simply can't fake a terrific ribeye...it's either good or it's not). The atmosphere at Jak's is dark and cool, small and bustling -- fun. On a few rare occasions, the service can be a bit slow, but I refuse to knock off any stars for that because the steaks are that good. Oh yeah! read more

What a lovely surprise: looking for a reasonably priced steak place for visiting family, I found Jak's on yelp. A pleasure all around!! The split plate charge of $2 is totally the way to go. Order a large (er, non-petite?) steak, ask them to split, and they will give each of a you a reasonably sized portion: more than enough for a good weekday meal. Our service was great too--all in all, I can't think of anything they could have done better. I will go back the next time I have a hankering for some serious red meat. read more

COCKROACH! On the table... next to my plate! Our server was apologetic, but basically treated it like it was no big deal. You would think that finding vermin on your table would warrant a free meal or free dessert or something, but no. They comp'ed one round of drinks. Whoop-de-do. Multiple attempts to contact the owner/manager were ignored. Jak's more or less shrugged their shoulders and said, "eh" to a cockroach next to my plate.
