The food is good (great scrambles, and awesome potato pancakes), but what really makes this place stand out for me are the morning-friendly drinks. You know the ones I'm talking about: The Sunday morning hair-of-the-dog that ensures you won't be watching Law and Order reruns all day on the couch, moaning about your aching head and body. The two best are the Michelada and the Manmosa. The Michelada (Corona beer, Worchestershire sauce, soy sauce, Tabasco, salt, lime juice) is like a delicious Bloody Mary for those of us who aren't fans of tomato juice. It's a fantastic drink with a ton of kick and Jak's makes them well. The Manmosa is just a huge mimosa (champagne and orange juice) for $6. A good deal at twice the price. read more

My daughter and I are meat and potato lovers and Jak's was a superb choice for dining. The steak was cooked to perfection and potatoes were awesome. The carrots and broccoli had just the right amount of bite to them. Our server Paige was the BEST, so friendly and helpful. About a year or so ago, Seattle Metropolitan magazine said Jak's had one of the 10 best burgers in the area. So I pretty much just added it to the list of places to try. It took a while, but we finally made it here today. Looking at the menu, it does seem a little pricey overall for most, if not everything. I of course had to try the burger, and the mrs. got the chicken dinner. The ambiance was pretty decent, a good upscale restaurant, a bar area, and a handful of tv's up front (with the football game on yay!). The bacon cheeseburger was pretty good, not outstanding, but pretty good. I ordered it medium-well, and it came medium. But that's ok with me, but maybe not most people. It was very greasy and messy though. Good flavors, good size. The fries were also pretty good. I tried some of the chicken, and it was very good, juicy and seasoned well. The salad had too much dressing though (and i like dressing). The major knock though would have to be the service. They are certainly very friendly and nice....when they actually stop by to check on you. Which wasn't very often. Refills were lacking, and check-ups were lacking. Took forever to get some to-go boxes and the check. It wasn't too busy of a night though (fairly full, but not crazy hopping). I was looking around Yelp to find a place to go for a belated birthday dinner. It came down to Jak's Grill and somewhere else. I was nervous about Jak's after reading some of the Yelp reviews, but I ultimately chose Jak's even though I'm really not a big steak person. Even as we walked up to the restaurant, it's right nextdoor to Matador and I almost suggested we go there instead. Luckily I didn't and we had an amazing dinner! The restaurant was fairly busy and we were seated on the upstairs balcony. That always makes me feel a bit uneasy because I hate to ask for things that make the waitress have to go up and down the stairs and often you see your waitress far less often. She was great, though, and you would never know she had to hoof it up a set of stairs to get to our table because she wasn't a stranger. We ordered the ahi tuna crudo appetizer with passion fruit and wasabi sauce off the fresh sheet. I was nervous about the passion fruit sauce, but you can't go wrong with wasabi, so I trusted the chef. The dish arrived with a larger than expected portion of tuna on top of a slaw in the middle of the plate and small dots of both wasabi sauce and passion fruit sauce alternating around the outer circle of the plate. I was relieved to see the dish didn't arrive with the sauce already on top of the fish. Being brave, I dipped the tuna in both the passion fruit and wasabi sauces and was really impressed that the wasabi brought the passion fruit under control and worked well with, while not overshadowing, the tuna. Brilliant dish I'd love to eat 100 more times. For entrees, we ordered a salmon off the regular menu and the cowboy ribeye off the fresh sheet. I love salmon and I'm convinced you can't find better salmon dishes anywhere in the world outside the greater Seattle area. For me, salmon should be lightly seasoned and sauced or just served plain with butter. I've had some amazing lightly seasoned/sauced salmon dishes, but Jak's salmon is the latter - plain with butter. It's great and they cook it to perfection, but I was kind of surprised that they chose to go the plain route with how creative and thoughtful the appetizer turned out to be. Now I've had a lot of steak, but I'm not big on eating red meat. I have a steak maybe once every 3-4 months, but I've had these few steaks a year in some of the most amazing restaurants around the country. The cowboy ribeye (basically a coffee-rubbed ribeye) is in the top 3 I've ever had if not the best. It's that good! The steak was cooked perfectly (to be expected at any place calling itself a steak restaurant), but it was a huge portion and the coffee-rubbed crust was phenomenal! With Jak's being so close to my new house, I may have to change my red meat schedule. This is a fantastic place for a great dinner with good drinks and great service. If there is a downside, it's that it can be tough to find a place to park. With the quality of the food and service, though, that's small potatoes. read more

This place had been on my bucket list for a while - finally gave it a try. I ordered their "petite" New York strip ...9oz! Very generous for a "petite" but their Jak's portion was like 18oz. Holy cow!! (Literally) The steak was done to a perfection deserving of tears - I mean perfect from one end to the other. The tip was as uniformly pink as the thicker middle. Kudos to the chef! And flavor... Omg... Just the right amount of salt/pepper and whatever else they use. No A1 needed here. The salad was a little disappointing in that it was just some lettuce leaves on a plate. No goodies like carrots or tomatoes or anything else that says "salad." Just. Plain. Lettuce. The meal was a bit pricey at $32 (I had only water to drink) but if you're having a steak-attack, this will quell that monster for sure! read more

Was a great experience, a little crowded for walking in. Had about a 45 minute wait at the bar, but the bar service was fantastic. Sitting at the front watching the kitchen send out all of these amazing plates, everything looked so tasty and well made. Helped us to figure out what to order without even seeing the menu yet! I had a filet mignon and it was the best steak I have had in years! The potato pancakes were amazing also! Everything we had was so great, I ate every last bite off of my plate- which is hard to do for me! But I couldn't let it go to waste. Only disappointment was I wanted an after dinner drink and they don't have espresso, so my espresso martini wasn't possible. And the drink i ordered from the menu they were out of the main liquor that goes in it... So no after dinner drink for me that night. But it was still all in all a great experience and great food! read more

I visited last on Wednesday. There were lots of people cuz of lunch time. I chose daily menu. I am not sure that dishes name. It was a kind of hamburg. Taste was just so so. It was a so normal hamburg. Service was so so too, When we had haven lunch, server asked us 'how's it going?' 5 time. We could not focus on our talking. Too much kindness, more distraction. But price is reasonable. I paid $13 include tip. It is same or cheaper price with another restaurants. If you expect new test, don't go this restaurant. But if you wanna enjoy your typical lunch time, it is good place. read more

I have been meaning to write this review for a while. My (now fiancé) and I had intended on coming here to celebrate our two year. That night I was lucky enough to surprise her and got engaged. So we choose Jak's since it is close and had a nice menu. We checked in and went next door for a drink while we waited. Here's where this review would have gotten a 1 star and remained. We got called and told our table was ready. Once we were sat we literally waited 10 minutes before we asked a lady (who had seen us several times) if we could see our waiter to get drinks. It was her. She walked away and came back 5 minutes later. We ordered our drinks. 10 min later this lady returns, drops our drinks with out a word and continues. We ask if we can order some food and (at this point I was pretty irate) we simply ordered an appetizer and we were going to call it a night with this place. We asked for the manager and explained in full detail what happened and how it was completely unacceptable for a place charging $50 a steak. He was very apologetic and asked if he could move us to a better section and he would personally take care of us. This is where it became 5-star service. He told us he wanted to start the evening over, covered our appetizer and 1st drinks and from there on the waitress he gave us over to was amazing. He continued to check in on us and made sure we were happy with better service. We only mentioned at the end that we had got engaged that night which he promptly went to the back gave us two glasses of champagne and dessert. He took a horrible situation on a great night, and turned it into an amazing start to a great rest of the night. The food was great!! read more

Jak's is an all around a great staple for West Seattle. Quick and friendly service, good food, and a warm and comfortable atmosphere make this West Seattle place a great place for dinner, drinks, lunch or brunch. On the brunch review: The Crab cake Benedict is a real treat for those of us not so into steak or beef items. My only negative comment is that the hollandaise could use a little citrus touch, and that was barely an issue. My plate was clean with a smile on my face at the end. The atmosphere feels like Old Seattle, cozy and not pretentious, clean and tasteful. Our server was friendly, frequent and quick. Another great perk for a Sunday morning: we didn't have to struggle to get a booth, whereas other places would usually include a wait time. I've frequented Jak's running on about 8 years now and think that they've somewhat staggered past their prime. The ambience in the front is a bit tacky. For the prices you are paying you'd think they could have created something a little more intimate than a plywood Bar. The Steaks, while most of the time are good, are a bit hit and miss. Years ago I would say this was just a step down below The Met. I hate to say it but they are several steps below a fine steakhouse. I'll still eat there but that will be based on my being in West Seattle and not wanting to drive across the bridge. read more

I've only ever had 2 things here. The burger. Perfect. I'm one of those weirdos that loves a barely cooked meat in general and a rare burger comes to you truly rare. There is no fear in this kitchen. Slap some bacon and bleu on that bad boy and you're in gastronomic heaven. The accompanying freedom fries are top-notch. Steak. Again, perfect. Can't remember which I ordered to be honest, it's been a few months, but I remember it being as good as I've ever had. Again, a flawless medium rare. Sides = delicious. As far as the rest of the menu? I can't personally attest to it's tastiness but if they take these common menu items and raise them to the apex of culinary quality I doubt they go wrong elsewhere. Thank you for making our anniversary a special one. Went to dinner on a Sat night. We were a bit concerned because they don't take resevations but we arrived a little before 8pm and had to wait at the bar for just a short while. Their bartenders are great and fixed a great drink. For appetizers we had the calamari. It was pretty good. The entrees come with a large green salad and with a big stalk of broccoli and some carrots. As for the salad..I would suggest the restaurant give a smaller portion and add some sliced veggies to it. The way it's prepared it is a bit sloppy and not very tasty so it doesn't compliment the good entrees..I ate 2 bites. The fresh cooked veggies with the entrée are a nice touch...but they should cut them in smaller sizes...again it looks more appetizing that way. For entrees hubby had the cowboy ribeye..it was really good and cooked perfectly. I had the spicy prawns. There were lots of them. As for the taste..ok..it was edible but nothing special. I'd probably do the scampi next time. To improve the taste they could ease up on the seasoning because it was a bit overpowering. I went with the potato pancake I would go with the mash potatoes in the future. For dessert we shared the berry cobbler and that was tasty. Overall it was a good meal. Service was prompt and friendly. Bartenders were the best... I'd return and try some different things. Parking..we got lucky with a space near the restaurant but it is street parking and a pretty busy area so be prepared to walk. read more

My first experience with Jak's was eating at the one near U-Village. We went in a group of 10 for a friend's bday, and I remember being very satisfied with the meal/experience. This time around, it was my bday dinner, and a party of nearly 15. This is tricky here, since Jak's doesn't take reservations, and the West Seattle location is rather small. I called ahead to try and figure it out with the hostess and manager, and they I they both tried their best to accommodate us. We ended up being seated in the small upstairs loft, which worked perfectly. Every single person was happy with their meal, whether they ordered steak or the delicious burger. I love the potato pancakes, although the garlic mashed potatoes are also great. For a top-tier steakhouse, Jak's prices are actually quite reasonable, especially considering that your choice of sides plus veggies and a salad is included with the entrees. Our bill still came out quite high, but that's because we ordered several bottles of wine. When it comes to steakhouses, I put Jak's among the very best in the greater Seattle area. They shine in all aspects, from the friendliness of the staff, to the ambience in the dining room, and most importantly quality of the meat itself and its preparation. The fact that their prices are relatively reasonable make it one of my favorites, for sure. Now I just need to find a way to get in during their very short 1hr happy hour so I can get that burger for $5! read more

Jak's is the best steak for the money in Washington. The food is all caps good. I love this place. Parking isn't usually too bad, but it depends on when you're visiting. I live down the street and my gf and I regularly hit brunch on Sundays as well. The eggs benedict is amazing. I go to the west seattle location, been to the one on sand pointe as well though. This is a great place to get a great steak in West Seattle - possibly the best. But don't forget happy hour, from 4:30-5:30. You can get their signature burger for 5.50 - pound for pound, the best burger deal in the city and one of the best quality bargains in all of happy-hour land. Often there is a line out the door before 4:30 arrives, and everyone is usually very jovial in anticipation of the beefy goodness of which they are about to partake. This is a pretty classical steakhouse - dark wood interior, fancy service, huge plates of meat and potatoes. They do have vegetarian and fish options, if you're that kind of person! Our table had steak skewers, the cowboy ribeye, and some sweet pea ravioli. The garlic mash that came with the skewers was incredible. The sweet pea ravioli were a bit sweet for a dinner entree in my opinion. The steak dishes came with some steamed, buttered broccoli, onion, and carrots that was a nice balance to all the meat. I think the highlight for me, though, was my drink. They have a nice cocktail selection, with some infusions. I had the fresh watermelon and cucumber drink, the name of which I unfortunately forget. This is not the #1 steakhouse in Seattle, but it's definitely in the Top 3. To start things off, I ordered the Caesar salad w/ some salmon (I was on a mission to take as much salmon in Seattle as possible). Interestingly enough, they asked how I wanted it done. I had no idea salmon could be made to order. They didn't ask me at Elliott's Oyster Bar, so this was definitely a surprise. I got it medium well. It was a bit over-peppered, but the salad was good. Having visited the Pike Place fish market, I saw the $3 per prawn on the menu and instantly began salivating, involuntarily and uncontrollably, I might add. I, of course, began picturing the fist-sized prawns from the market laying ever so casually on ice. When it was brought out, the prawn looked like the size of a medium-large shrimp at best. Listen - I know that they shrink in size when cooked, but there was definitely shrinkage here. The waitress was incredibly nice and explained the whole shrinkage thing. I didn't really care that much - I was waiting on the steak. However, she was nice enough the bring an extra prawn - on the house. Thank you very much Deb :-) I ordered the "Jak's' cut of the NY strip. I get mine medium rare. I started cutting into it and was about to send it back - the edges were done medium well. As I kept going though, I discovered a nice pink center that was waiting to be devoured. Hats off to the chef for perfecting a very thick piece of steak. It really is an artform. Wine selection here is excellent. I paired my meal with a nice glass of Spanish Riojo. It was thin but aromatic. Not too dry. Damage wasn't too bad either - about $70 w/ tax + tip. read more

We sat at the bar and the bartender was amazing, and made some really good drinks, my mimosa was heavy on the champagne! :) I had the vegetarian scramble and it was really good, the potatoes were awesome and the biscuit was to die for! A 3 star rating for what is probably a 4 star place. I've been here a few times, once for breakfast and once for dinner. The breakfast was the better of the two meals. The steak was cooked well and the service and drinks were good. My dinner experience was much different. I ordered the Cowboy steak and wanted it cooked Medium Rare, my girlfriend ordered the NY strip and wanted it Medium Rare. When my steak arrived it was rare, probably the most rare steak I've ever eaten and a restaurant or at home. The flavors were good, but it was definitely undercooked. My girlfriends steak was cooked Medium to Medium-Well and was much tougher. The sides were good on both dishes. However if you are steak house, the steak should be cooked right. read more

This is my absolute favorite restaurant. I love the salmon, the chicken and the potatoe pancakes. The martinis are the bomb. I always get a ruby red with gin instead of vodka, and always get the chicken, just thinking about it makes me want it. They have great salads too. My husband loves the steaks, any kind of steak from the sandwhich to the watchamacallit! He says "they know how to cook flesh"! I say it's just all around yummy. read more

Best brunch I can remember having in a long time! Jak's is always a great pick for dinner but now I have a new favorite brunch spot too! The atmosphere is charming, old building with wooden booths on the main floor and nice tables upstairs near the windows. The bar area is nice, looks like a great spot to grab a drink in the PM, or coffee and breakfast in the AM. The food, excellent and the menu selections did not disappoint. I had the veggie scramble with a side of potato pancakes - the scramble was very tasty, lots of fresh veggies perfectly sauteed and mixed together with just the right amount of cheese. I've been here a couple of times and enjoyed every minute of it. The service is excellent and the food is awesome.. I had the filet mignon cooked to a perfect medium rare with garlic mashed potatoes with a blue cheese salad.. The salad was overly dressed but none the less i love blue cheese so i did not mind it. It could have been more crunchy but it was so delicious that i ate it all. My filet was perfection, it was amazing how beautifully cooked it was. I would eat that over and over. :) the veggies and the garlic mash were also very good. Nothing was over powering everything just tasted good.. Thick, succulent and juicy steak? YYYEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHH Ahem. Jak's Grill is your average restaurant to get steak and chill with friends. I came here for lunch and ordered the ribeye steak. The portion was pretty big, and the steaks come with a side of salad with your choice of dressing and fries/potato pancakes. The steak is big and juicy, but it sucks that they don't have any extra sauce/dressing that comes with it. Potato pancakes were alright, I guess it's better than fries. My friend ordered one of the specials... I forgot what it's called... duuuuhhhhhhh. I think it's something-something... something. ANYWAY the price was $35, if that helps. That was pretty good as well, it was bigger than mine, and the taste is more pepper-y. My other friend ordered one of the brunch menu. It had a biscuit, egg and potato and beef sauteed together, I think. It was pretty good as well. I would recommend ordering the steaks though. Anyway service was quick and friendly, nothing too special though. Price is quite above average. My steak cost $30, then again I think it's worth it. 6 or 7 of us went to Jak's on a Saturday morning for breakfast and we all had great meals. There were 3 of us that were rookies and the rest were Jak's veterans, but we all really liked the food. I went for a basic eggs, hash browns, and bacon plate, while others at the table went for the steak and eggs, eggs benedict, and other tasty concoctions. Everything looked really good and no one had any complaints. Service was fine, and prices were reasonable; about $8 for my order. This location is not the most convenient to get to, and the parking situation is not the best, but I can say it's worth it to try the food. Oh and apparently the burgers are to die for; one of the vets got one to go for her hubby and the other vets were drooling just thinking about it : ) read more
