A most welcome coffee shop addition to the South End esp. since the only alternative in the area is Flour which is almost always packed. I've come by several times so far to study and it's a great spot to get some work done - good amount of space and seating is pretty comfortable. So why the 3 stars? The coffee itself is only decent and even their pour over pales in comparison to the likes of Thinking Cup and Pavement - hard to say where the weak point is (beans themselves, water temp, grind, etc.), but it was about on par with my own single drips on an off day. Haven't tried the food yet, but I thought it was awesome that they offer Japanese toast...def will get around to that soon! read more

Came by on a Tuesday morning for a coffee and to do a couple hours of studying. It has lots of seating and free WiFi which was perfect for me. There are some outlets around too. My only complaint was that it was very dim inside other than a couple tables near the windows. I had the Spanish latte which was the perfect level of sweetness in my opinion. The food looked just ok to me although I did not try any of it. I will probably be back sometime! read more

The best is on one of their croissants, but if you want a slightly healthier option, they're also delicious on a whole wheat bagel. I prefer their lattes to their brewed coffee but to each his own. I didn't really care for their chicken salad sandwich. I thought the flavor could be good but there was too much mayo masking it. I didn't find it worth the $8.50 + tax. read more

I decided to try this Jaho location again and I'm still in the same camp I was before - overpriced, a bit run down, and tiny portions. That said, they do have some outdoor seating and the pesto and focaccia bread are delicious. I'm bumping a star for the bread. My friend had the hummus pizza. It was just ok - really needed maybe something green? Comparing to Flour it would be a more comfortable work environment, but there are additional cafes with much better within a 10 minute walk. --------------- Do yourself a favor and walk a mile to the other Jaho location. This one leaves a lot to be desired. The interior is somewhat cute, but run down and tiny and this location does not have a wine bar. The food is tasty, especially the focaccia bread, but the portions leave something to be desired - especially at their price point. I had the tomato mozzarella sandwich with pesto and my friend had the tomato mozzarella salad. I would rename the salad to be an appetizer or something like that because it wasn't very salad-like. It consisted of 6 half slices of tomato and a similar amount of mozzarella. At least make the tomato whole slices! The sandwich was pretty tiny (like the plate it came on - weird) and contained very little tomato or mozzarella, but did have the addition of some unnecessary romaine lettuce. That said, the pesto is delicious and the bread was SO GOOD. If you're looking for a quick, overpriced snack in a place that lacks the ambiance of the other Jaho and doesn't have a line as long as Flour - this is your spot. I will say, as an aside, that the staff is super friendly and lovely. read more

JaNo!-I know some 7 year olds who run their business better than this"company". One of the worst customer service experiences that I've ever had! This chain has a nerve to have opened up several of these locations across the city. What they need to do is slow down the rapid growth scale and spend some time& money investing in basic customer service- I think that I still have some old Peter Drucker books around that I can send them, they need it! I was sent in circles to several different locations, as some of their employees don't really know or understand their products and business.after those failures, I then attempted in vain to reach out to their customer support team. Initially in attempting to reach the store directly-was met with a store phone mailbox that was full on several attempts and just hangs up on you.Then I moved to their "live chats" with customer service, which was equally as frustrating. in both cases, the support people were non effective and just stopped responding during the chat (is this real life?) The owner(s) of this 'company should be ashamed and embarrassed, I definitely will not be coming back and will be sure to spread the word on this experience. Thank goodness for Starbucks! I looked up the owner of this side show, he should be appalled. Cant imagine they'll stay in business long with this set up. read more

Jaho is a fine recent addition to the South End. They do great coffee, both drip and using the space age syphon system. The seating is adequate - and really pretty spacious for the neighborhood. All in all, a fun place for my pre-haircut coffee. My only objection is that that the cakes are both irresistible and really expensive. read more

I stopped by Jaho to chat with a friend after dinner-time. The vibe of this place was super cozy and the noise levels were quite low. There was a variety of different seating available and the space was well-lit. After checking out the huge menu selection, I figured I'd give the boba a try. The green tea and the honeydew boba drinks were more like slushies and quite sweet. Plus, the boba was on the chewier side. Not exactly the best boba out there, but definitely good if you need a sweet fix. Will definitely try the other menu items next time. read more

Jaho is the place to go if you like getting work done in cafes - the location is prime and the decor and seating is inviting. However, the food and coffee isn't anything special. The espresso isn't as strong and bold as I like so the latte's are too weak/milky and the pastry selection is limited to basic croissants and muffins. read more

Great hip coffee spot in my neighborhood. I havent tried the food but their lattes are really good and I also enjoy the cold brew which they have on tap. There is plenty of space inside for reading/studying/drinking your coffee/chatting with a friend. Kind of pricey, but about what you would expect for a place like this. Apparently they also have soft serve ice cream in the summer time which I would love to try. read more

This is a lovely coffee shop and bar. The staff are always kind, and the drinks are amazing. There is a large variety of sweets and food, and they have an enormous selection of specialty coffee, tea, and hot cocoa options. Use the "order ahead" feature on their website to avoid standing in line. The atmosphere is great, and you should definitely sit a while and enjoy the music. Got the Lavender Vanilla Latte and the bagel BLT. I love the atmosphere of the place, there are plenty of seats, outlets, different tables, and even a couch to lounge on. The lavender vanilla latte was pretty good but a little bit on the sweeter side especially when it got cold. I didn't taste any hints of lavender though and it just tasted like a vanilla latte mostly. The bagel BLT was great, I mean you can't go wrong with a BLT. My 4 five stars were based on the coffee and ambiance. The coffee served to my husband was not watered down. The Spanish coffee I had was really yummy and not too sweet. If you want your food heated up, don't forget to ask. The staff behind the counter was kind enough to heat my dessert. I docked a star considering the waitress we had didn't seem like she wanted to be there. It's not like anyone was trying to strike any small talk with her. But breaking a smile couldn't hurt. The non-dairy milks displayed right in front were especially helpful since I'm particular about brands. My husband loves their banana bread with chocolate chips, I've tried the chia pudding and custard filled pastry, and they have excellent baklava. They have everything from 7 layer bars to healthy foods options. I recently got a large (2 sizes only) iced oat milk latte but considering how I like my ratios of espresso to milk and since they both have 2 shots of espresso, next time I'd get a small. I also love that they offer agave as it is an easy to blend sweetener! I would try their nitro cold brew, muffins, honey cake, and biscotti in the future. read more

This Jaho location leaves much to be desired, especially when compared to its Downtown Boston location. It's interior design lacks charm and the cozy ambiance most of us look for in a coffee shop. I haven't tried their food, but their soy matcha latte was too sweet for me. Sweetened soy milk maybe? I highly recommend you skip the South End location and venture to their Downtown one instead. Absolutely love this place! I grab coffee at least 3 times a week, as I work right around the corner. Quick service, great coffee, decently priced wine and martinis. Very accommodating to your order (I got almond milk instead or cream in my expresso martini- most places would not fill this request) I've had the salted Carmel macchattini, expresso martini, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch martini and all were amazing. I like this place in terms of ambience, convenience (right next door to where I live), and quality of the espresso and pastries. In addition to a traditional coffee shop, they serve beer and wine. Typically, the evening has a bit more of a wine bar vibe though people will still be working on their laptops. The selection of wine is good - both by the glass and bottles. Only note of caution is the service tends to be on the slower side, so if you're trying to rush in and out for your morning coffee you may have to wait a few extra minutes. Walked in and basically walked out. We did not to order anything, as we stood there waiting for several minutes as the useless cashier was flirting with some girl. As we politely waited for him to get her number, he eventually called out some other guy to help me, but he acted distracted as well. Fine, if that's what they're going for, but a coffeehouse that doesn't attract a wall of open MacBooks may as well be a continental breakfast room at Best Western. Drinks. Her much-pumped frozen hot chocolate served up icy and layered, but to be fair, my blended Thai iced bubble tea was frosty, appropriately homogenized and pretty damn good. The large cup of iced Hanoi coffee was filled with around 90% mini crushed ice and 10% coffee. When I showed the cup to an employee, he said the drink is rich, so customers want a lot of ice. I asked if customers are supposed to let the coffee melt in the ice. He said no, but next time, I can ask for less ice. He didn't remedy the situation. $5.25 for ice. The drink had little flavor and the consistency was rather thin and watery. There was nothing "Hanoi" about the drink. Unfortunately, I took a picture of the cup when the ice was partially melted, so one doesn't see how much ice was originally in the cup. Dismal customer service, poor product. Update: Anil the owner contacted me with a kind message and an offer to rectify the situation. Also, he noted correctly that I had visited the Washington Street branch, not the one in the South End. I went back in May 2017, ordered a green tea boba, which was one of the best I ever had. I live close by so I will definitely visit again. The customer service was stellar this time. read more

When people come into a coffee shop, they are ready to start their day with a good tasty cup of brew. On that I'll say my Spanish Latte was exactly that- tasty & hit the spot. On the other hand the banana bread was old & tasteless. It was dry like sawdust. The atmosphere was up beat which I enjoyed. The furniture was comfortable. The pink lid and decorations on the cup made for a cute Instagram picture. My overall visit was a 3 star, there's room for improvement. read more

Here is the deal. I like this place for coffee, I really do, but hear me out. If I go to The Buttery for an iced coffee, and I think there iced coffe is at least comparable, it costs me $2.95 and then another $1.00 for a refill and I've got my fix for the day for under 4.00 dollars. However, if I go to Jaho for their iced coffee it costs me $3.50 for the first one and then there isn't a discount for the refill. So, in order to get my fix its going to cost me 7.00. Plus they charge .50 for soy while he buttery provides it for free. It is simply more economical for me to walk the extra few block to The Buttery where I can get my fix for .50 more than one coffee @ Jaho. Add in the Iggy's Croissant and it's almost a no brainer. Bring the prices down and I'll be there everyday. I like you Jaho, I really do and I think I could love you if you weren't such a gold digger. read more

I'm elated to discover a cafe in Boston that offers so much attention to detail. After living in Tokyo, I'm used to latte art, craft coffee and drinking out of porcelain tea cups. It's a culture that's quite hard to find in the States. It's so refreshing to find a place like this! This is not a Starbucks, it's mostly a craft coffee house. I ordered a sipping hot chocolate and it was served beautifully in a hand painted porcelain tea set. The style of cocoa is rich and thick, similar to chocolat chaud or something you'd find at Angelina - Paris (if you've ever eaten there.) It's delicious, but don't be surprised if you can't finish but half your drink. Atmosphere is great, the decor is unique, kinda hipster. Upbeat music, but not obnoxious. There are plenty of tables, many communal style that offer plugs. The energy here is peaceful and relaxed. Definitely a solid cafe. Will definitely try the wine selections. read more

I am probably rating this place more generously than I should. It's just that there are NO good or "real" coffee shops in the Boston area. I have criteria for what I consider to be a "good" coffee shop. While I have yet to find a place in Boston that meets all of them, Jaho meets most of them. The good: There is a deceptively large amount of seating for such a small place. A good amount of the seating is comfortable, and a true Boston coffee shop irregularity, there is even a couch. They have free wifi (a coffee shop must!). The coffee is good, without being pretentious about it. As I try to cut the caffeine on weekends, I'm happy that they have a large loose leaf tea selection. Jaho has a good amount of snacks aside from just pastries and deserts (i don't need a coffee shop to be a restaurant, but I can't stand it when they don't have some fixings for a simple fresh sandwich). The bad: As others have mentioned, the bathroom situation is ridiculous. A patron has to wait for one of the busy staff to be free to buzz them in, and then hope that the person inside responded to their knock. They have a fancy Japanese style toilet, so it should not be too hard for them to go to Home Depot and spring a few bucks for a deadbolt lock. Or, as annoying as it would be, have a key (it works for gas stations). The "buzzing in" thing is terrible. I don't need to feel like I'm being let into an exclusive club just to relieve my bladder. The staff could probably be a little more attentive at wiping down tables, but they are mostly nice and attentive. The last time I was there, I got a sandwich and iced mocha type thing, and the total for the two items came to over $15.00. It was good, but that does seem a little ridiculous unless I'm getting some crazy all locavoure sourced turkey and cheese; and I doubt that I was. Anyone wanting iced water gets it in a shot glass. Another complaint is that this is yet another coffee shop that closes before 8:00 (7:30, in fact). This is extra frustrating, because their Salem branch is open until 11:00 p.m. What the heck does Boston have against late night coffee joints? (and I'm not going to Diesel to pay money for wifi and bad attitudes). The final con is simply the location. The clientele can be a little South End sometimes. Sure lady, have a loud cackling personal call on your cell phone sitting at a table next to people who are talking or reading quietly. Yeah guys, please loudly describe your roommate drama and/or art project to make yourself feel noticed and victimized for the third week in a row. Oh, can another self-absorbed idiot play a video clip or song on their mac so the entire coffee shop can hear, please? Okay, even though the negative bit is three times a long as the good bit, I still give this place 4 stars. What they do serve is bitter, black water pulled through a pack of overroasted coffee beans ground too finely to be of any use, especially given their outdated espresso machine. This quaint coffee shop was located just a block away from where we were staying, so I was able to check it out a couple of times and I have to say that the selection, the quality of coffee, the atmosphere and the service were all on point. The cold brew was very smooth, and their version of a Cuban 'cortadito' was quite yummy although not quite like the Miami version which is sweet foamy milk crack coffee. I was tempted by other menu items, including their Vietnamese coffee but will just have to try those next time I'm in Boston. read more

Awesome coffeshop. Nice people, real cups, really interesting and tasty pastries. Also included: table service when you order coffee! I used to come here every morning before work last summer and get a Vietnamese coffee or a Cafe au lait. I'd definitely recommend both. Their Cafe au lait is wonderful, with a touch of foam at the top. The owners are wonderful people as well. I really miss this place since I left Boston - I wish they'd come out to Seattle and start the exact same coffee shop. I haven't quite found a place that is as homey and comfortable here yet. read more
