I will say reading some reviews, I was a but skeptical but I still wanted to try this resturant. Connected with the mall, I was worried about parking but a had a nice spot close to the resturant. Came for an anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed at all. Reserving the table was so easy. As we arrived, out table was immediately ready. Staff even wished us a happy anniversary from reading the note. Seating area was nice and comfortable. Lighting was just right, until later when it was dimmed even more which made it too dark. First time trying this steakhouse (I believe it's a chain) so I expected the quality to be pretty decent. Got the bisque, sour cream and onion drink, steak with bleu cheese butter on the side, and the creme brulee. Food came out fairly quickly and service was great. Bisque was rich and deeply flavourful, this one really stood out. The soup had a beautiful depth, with pieces of crab meat. It finishes with a gentle kick at the end. Sour Cream and Onion had a lovely aroma right from the first bite -- the dill really comes through. Mashed potato was fluffy and smooth. Steak had a beautiful smoky flavour cooked into it, the blue cheese butter on the side adds a bit of creamy, tangy richness when you want it. Creme Brulée was a satisfying finish to the meal. Smooth, creamy custard beneath that signature crisp caramelized top. Satisfied with the place and would definitely come back again. read more

First time trying J Gilbert's and I am so glad my boyfriend suggested this place last minute. We were looking for a place to go for NYE and luckily, we got a reservation, day of, at 7:45pm. For starters, we ordered the crab bisque, the caeser salad, and the lobster risotto. The soup was absolutely delicious and it was like a flavor bomb in your mouth after each bite. I had high hopes for the lobster risotto but next time we may skip this. I was hoping it would be more creamy and out of this world, but it was just mid. For entrees, my boyfriend and I both got the center cut filet with poblano au gratin potatoes and creamed corn with bacon. We were raving about how yummy everything was in between bites!! And to finish, we ordered our favorite dessert, crème brûlée. Lastly, I wanna shout out the bartender.. my Negroni was perfect, so of course, I had to order another. Stopped in after a long day of Christmas shopping at the mall where this location is at. Normally they have happy hour specials if you sit at the bar, but we were told they couldn't offer it to us as it was ending in a few minutes so we ordered off the regular menu instead which did not disappoint. Here's what we each ordered: 1) Wagyu Burger with asparagus 2) Prime Rib with baked potato and asparagus 3) BBQ Ribs with fries Like 90% of our meals there, it was great. I think I've only had two things there in the past we didn't like. One time the scallops still had pieces of sand and grit lingering with every bite and another time was an undercooked steak and bisque soup that tasted curdled. Their tea is always fresh and the selection of alcohol beverages including the smoked old fashion is amazing. Joey is usually our waiter and does a great job as he's been there for probably 10 plus years. The manager is usually very good about making his rounds to check on the guests. This visit he missed us, but it's not to be expected each time. My father was with us on this visit and had never dined there before. He said it was the best prime rib he'd had to date and my burger was delicious. The asparagus was sautéed just right with perfect seasoning, I could eat an entire plate full. Our only disappointment this visit was the bread service wasn't warm like usual tasted kind of old/stale and the amount of asparagus on my plate versus my father's was different. Made a reservation online for our anniversary. We were seated quickly. Love the decor and music choices. Got a couple cocktails... just average nothing fancy. We got the pre fix menu came with 3 courses. I got the lobster bisque, sirloin and crème brûlée. The server was great but he did get my husband order wrong... it was no big deal. My birthday celebration (#68:) has been stupendous. I chose this, one of my favorite West County places, for dinner and had a pretty great experience. I love the ambiance of this restaurant. It's beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Our server, Raven, was awesome. To start, we chose a beautiful white wine, Conundrum, which presented with a very refreshing, multi fruit mix with a balanced finish. This would be a great wine to end a stressful day, relaxing on the patio, to erase the heaviness of the day. We chose the seafood sampler for our starter. It included oysters on the half, crab legs, lobster and shrimp, accompanied with delicious sauces. We shared the house salad, also delish. For our mains, my husband ordered the prime rib, which was excellently prepared and I ordered the off menu halibut. Unfortunately, the halibut was taken beyond the limit with the cook which was a bit disappointing. On the flip side, when I brought this to Raven's attention, she immediately spoke to Chef and I was able to get a dish that was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. The halibut was accompanied by baby bellas and gnocchi that were delicious and the beurre blanc was so tasty! We ended our dinner with a beautiful Graham 10 year Port. Oh my!! So good. We opted to take our desserts, the cheesecake and the chocolate peanut butter pie home, to enjoy as we watched the Final Four (Illini vs UConn). In finality, I would rate our experience at 4.5 (unfortunately there is not that option with the star rating). I decided to venture here after work. I let the hostess know it would just be me and she offered to sit me at the bar or a table. I opted for a table since I wanted to work on my laptop. I was still seated within the bar area so it looked like my server was also helping bartend. First off, super friendly service. I was on my phone working and he dropped water and came back as soon as he saw me hang up the phone. I ordered a crab bisque soup as my starter and then got the bourbon glazed salmon. My choice of sides was broccolini and the mac and cheese. The crab bisque was delicious! It had some crab sprinkled on top. I was also dropped some bread which was warm and yummy. Came with whipped butter. My salmon was also super flavorful and delicious. The Mac and cheese was a huge portion (that side was a couple dollars extra which made sense and made it worth it). J Gilbert's is usually a great choice for a family event, get-together, or date! Easy to book online and a great atmosphere embedded into the West County Mall. But don't let that deter you from trying as it can stand alone on food quality. Last nights plate options were prime rib that got rave reviews, sirloin and shrimp, and filets. The wait staff is on point and very attentive. Start out with a craft cocktail - and highly recommend the lavender martini. The bread was very warm and fresh and comes with two options of butter - pastrami butter and a light whipped butter. The sides are pretty impeccable with multiple vegetarian choices along with more starchy options like my new favorite potato au gratin. The sweet creamed corn and bacon is superb as well. If you want additional flavor beyond the wood fired steaks (which are already amazing) - try the ancho chili rub. The pre-fixe meal option also is very fun to do as it gives you a soup/salad and even a dessert for a reasonable price. My only complaint was it was a bit of a miss on the quality of my filet last night which isn't typical - was a tad on the smaller side for a 6oz. But other steaks were to size! It is a bit of a darker place inside and typically they lower the lights even further in the evening, not my personal favorite but may be for others wanting more intimacy. 11of us enjoyed Easter lunch at this restaurant. The 3 little girls with us all enjoyed beef. The 2 younger girls ordered the sliders, the older girl got the petite Filet Mignon. My girlfriend and I both ordered the Sea Scallops. The service here was very good. We were promptly seated upon arrival. Drink orders were placed within minutes of arrival. We placed food orders for the children quickly too since the girls were already ravenous. Complimentary bread and butter were served right after drinks. Appetizers were ordered when drinks arrived. The meals all came hot to table at the same time! The kitchen did a good job with that since Scallops require so little cooking time. While I will continue to miss McCormick and Schmicks this replacement will see us again and soon. read more

This was an amazing meal and atmosphere, plus our service was amazing! We got the pretzel crusted onion rings as an appetizer and to be honest, this was my least favorite part of the meal. It didn't taste like anything special, just like regular onion rings. But I loved the different dipping sauces that came with it. When your favorite steakhouse changes their menu.... They took off the shrimp Durango which was fire!!! and replaced with THE typical steakhouse bacon wrapped shrimp. Meh it was good I guess but not unique and fresh like before. Then they took off the smaller cuts of strip steaks and replaced it with only a 14 oz. Too large to eat on your own imo but enough to push their price point. The sides come out with a different presentation and look in-cohesive with the main entree. Desserts are great per usual. Meh maybe Because they are getting more popular now then before but No one ever follows up with complaints that were caused on their end (like over cooked steaks) in the restaurant and if they do all they offer you is a free dessert for a hard chewy 60 dollar steak. It's gone downhill the last 10 years imo. The managers don't visit the tables like they used to either from what I've experienced. Flemings and Capital Grille have great customer service (they even use your name to seat you) and are good if you are looking for a warm environment and great food. There are quite a few steakhouses in this price point in St. Louis. Capital Grille, 801 Chop, KRIS, Sam's steakhouse, Ruth Chris, Flemings, citizens Kane, twisted tree, etc. that I would think they would step up their game and appreciate their customers a bit more here and take pride in the temperatures their steaks should be served at. Idk . Do I still crave their wood smoked steak though cause when they do get it right it's amazing but for the price point they need to do more imo to keep up with the Joneses. read more

I always love the ambiance and low lighting in here, especially with the fire places going. It gives a definite vibe to the experience. We made a reservation and were seated promptly. I ordered a the sparkling blackberry martini and it was lovely. We didn't order an appetizer, but I got the Caesar salad and the filet with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. All were lovely! Sooooo disappointing, for the third time!!! My good friend & I have been meeting here for dinner for about 6 years or more because we always used to get a scrumptious, amazing meal, always dependable, UNTIL NOW!!!! For the last 3 months of meeting here at J. Gilbert's we have been very disappointed!!!! So, my Strip steak, the last 2 times was grizzly, but this time, it was not but it was a little over cooked (asked for medium rare) and it was not seasoned so beautifully yummy like it had been for the last 6 years!!!!!! The Risotto was very sticky and dry and the Cauliflower Au Gratin was burned !!!!! The whole meal was just ok and we had previously said that we could always count in J. Gilbert's for a fabulous meal but apparently, not any more . My friend'sFilet was a little dry, her asparagus was under cooked and her Crème Brûlée was very very runny, Something has happened????? We asked the waitress, who was wonderful, if they have new chefs or changed management or something ???!!! She did say the Chefs were different. Well, we have kept trying J. Gilbert's because we loved the restaraunt so much for 6-7 years and visited every month but after the 3rd disappointing meal there we may have to move on to a new favorite place. Something needs to be fixed!!!!!!!!!! The steaks are no longer seasoned wonderfully like they were, steaks are sometimes grizzly and not cooked the way I order (used to always be cooked perfectly!!!!!), they are over cooking the wonderful Risotti and burning the Cauliflower au gratin and don't even know what they did wrong with the runny Crème Brûlée??!! If you like your steaks SMOKED then this is the place for you. Parking is in mall parking lot so good luck finding a place to park. The outside and inside looks nice. It is very dark inside. Big bar area. Yep that smell - Smoked meat. I felt like I was at BBQ place. All I could do is smell that smoked smell. Place will get crowded after 7. I would recommend making reservations if possible. Our waitress was nice but struggled keeping up with the tables once all the tables were filled. She was doing her best. Food - fresh and hot Sourdough bread and butter will come out. Crab cakes were good. Not our favorite but good. Caesar salad was good but had a bunch of big stalk pieces in it. Main meal: 6oz center cut fillet. Gross why is my steak intensely smoked. Wood fire steaks and smoked are different. This tasted smoked, such an intense flavor throughout. Should have just went to Texas Roadhouse for a steak. Had broccolini had good flavor but was hard to chew. Salted baked potato and mushrooms were good. Cauliflower Au Gratin we would not get again. I finally had the pleasure of coming here last night and boy did it surpass any expectations I ever had! While trying to figure out between here and another place, I chose this one since it was on the way home and I was finally ready to try it. Upon walking in, I was greeted at the hostess stand and while they were trying to figure out where to seat me, I decided last minute to sit at the bar. The first few steps had me in awe; from the size of it, to how dimly lit the entire place was but it still felt so intimate! Right away, Sarah, the bartender, came and gave me water and a menu. I decided I was in the mood for a cocktail and asked her opinion on the Sparkling Blackberry Martini. She said it was one of the most popular and highly recommended. I decided, why not, and went with that. After browsing the menu, I decided the 'Prixe Fixe' was the way to go, as you get an appetizer, main, and dessert. When she came back with my drink, I got the Caesar salad, the 6 oz filet and then told her I'd decide later on the dessert. One thing that gained them major points was allowing substitutions for sides in a preset menu! I was shocked yet excited because I know that's not common to make changes for a preset menu but also, I wasn't in the mood for asparagus or mashed potatoes. Instead, I got the cauliflower au gratin and green beans with pecans. She put that in and said some fresh sourdough bread and butter would be out shortly with my salad. The first few sips of my martini were spot on! It was smooth tasting but refreshing. The salad and bread came out in two minutes flat and I couldn't wait to dive in! The bread was hot (which is always a plus) and the butter was a nice accompaniment. I wasn't aware there were two different kinds until I asked and was then informed one was regular and the other one was pastrami butter with cracked pepper! That one was good, but I couldn't differentiate it too much because of the salad taste I had in my mouth. Speaking of which, the salad was incredible! It was much bigger than I thought and the fresh cracked pepper always was a nice touch! I was able to finish two small wedge pieces of the bread and eat majority of my salad when my filet and sides came. Around this time, I was ready for another drink and got the Tropical Breeze. I'd say this is more of a summer drink as it has passion fruit liquor, pineapple and some other things. It was good but reminded me more of an alcoholic fruit drink. I was beyond impressed with the filet as it was cooked perfectly as requested. It was so tender, well-seasoned and overall, the perfect piece of meat! As for the sides, I mostly ate the cauliflower and had a few bites of the green beans. The cauliflower was good and reminded me of Bread Co's broccoli cheddar soup! The green beans were just green beans but still good nonetheless. After doing what I could with my meal, I stopped short of eating dessert (asked for that to go) because my stomach was beyond capacity! The Seafood Mixed Grill was amazing, perfect combination of a little bit of everything seafood..which I enjoyed. The service and ambiance was good but the food was a game changer.
