We had a great evening at this iconic family run steakhouse in Rockhill. Talk about a throwback. People were so small in the 60's and 70's. Not much has changed since then. The restaurant has lower ceilings, smaller dining room tables and chairs and was very cozy. Not cramped but cozy. The menu was All steakhouse - straight forward - nothing fancy. The prices were not stuck in the 70's though - they kept up with the times. We enjoyed cocktails before, and an appetizer of house made onion rings which were outstanding. several had salads - the house and caesar were both great as was the traditional Greek was exceptional. The steaks were Prime and we had our choice of either healthy 8oz+ filets or 12 /16oz NY Strip Steaks. Also some had the 8 oz Cold water Lobster tails. My16oz NY Strip ordered Medium Rare was cooked perfectly as was every other steak at the table. Those who ordered lobster got them deep fried which personally i think is a waste - but to each there own - it was good as well. The cream spinach was very tasty. If there was one wish - i would have liked a bit of seasoning on the steaks - this was teh consensus of the table. the beef was good - but could have used some sort of seasoning - even some S & P. Our server was friendly and knowledgable and has been there some time. Service was well paced and supported by an excellent team - waters were filled, table bussed and bread with REAL butter was kept full. As a personal side note, our folks started going to Charcoal House in 1963 - so this place has a special spot in our family - it is not often you can grab a good steak with 6 people on a Saturday night with a reservation and not be rushed out the door and receive 5 STARS! I will start with my adult son and I wanted to love this place. Retro old school vibe, because they have never updated the place, cool, that is what we are looking for and they delivered! two rye Manhattans straight up, again they delivered, complete with old school bright red cherry. our server, D, was super kind and inviting. Explaining the in and outs of the menu, in a positive and polite way of you are not regulars so I want to remind you of things. So far this is a 5 star place! then the food, spinach salad, D asked in bacon and egg was ok on the salad, Sure, the bacon was imitation "baco's" Two filet's with onion rings, steak fries, and hash browns. Where to start, the med rare steaks arrived with this beige/gray color and slightly above room temperature, the steak fries were not completely cooked and cold, the hash browns were also cold and like the cold onion rings completely devoid of flavor. usually steakhouse have their own specialty meat provisioner and I think this place is serving Sysco or Kuna frozen steaks. we skipped dessert to lesson further disappointment. read more

We went for our 51st Anniversary with high hopes, and we were sorely disappointed for the way we were treated. My Prime New York Cut Sirloin Strip was ordered medium rare, and it was as tough as shoe leather. I did not want to complain, but when the owner (Mr. Angelos) approached our table expecting us to rave over the steaks, I told him I could not finish the meat, he insisted on arguing that he pays, "top dollar" for the best meats--I said I was paying top dollar too! He would not be dissuaded, and I was not looking to argue or cause a scene. My wife described her filet mignon as "chewy", but it was edible. The bill with tip was $173, and I did not want to punish the waitress. Quite frankly, the worst part was the unbridled arrogance of Mr. Angelo. We will not be returning. The days of this place as a top dinner destination are long past. Let the customer beware. read more

Normally I don't post negative comments as I am pretty easy to please in terms of eating out, but this was not a good experience. We were seated promptly, but were not handed menus, so we just sat and felt weird. It took a long time to get our water, and when we finally get our menus, the price of the items were very high. We thought maybe it would worth the price so we went ahead and ordered the 2 person meal, which included beef tenderloin, potato, vegetable, and salad. For $117 plus tax. We wanted our meat medium rare. When we received the food. Half of the meat was very overcooked and dry. The carrots and broccoli were just steamed and with no seasoning at all. The twice baked potatoes were good, and salad was average. With the price they charged, I was expecting the food to be cooked with skills and good flavors. Our waitress was very good, the waiter that was running or fast walking was very rude, literally kept sticking his ass in between tables and chairs shoving his ass into unwanted territory making my party very uncomfortable! My wife and I stumbled upon this place by accident. We were actually on our way to another restaurant, but that restaurant was closed so we saw Charcoal House along the way and decided to give it a try. This restaurant appears to be a converted home and it is quite small inside. The majority of patrons during the dinner service are post-retirement age, but we actually liked that because it kept things peaceful and quiet. Our waitress Demetra was extremely nice and very knowledgeable about the menu and the specialty drinks. The first thing we noticed on the menu was the prices. This restaurant is definitely at the upper end of how much we like to spend when eating out, but the menu really didn't have much variety or any unique dish to help them stand out. My wife ordered the Shrimp Scampi and I ordered a center cut filet with onion rings. The food came out within 25 minutes and was hot. My wife really enjoyed her food although she was expecting it to come with pasta (just an expectation, nothing said or mentioned about pasta on the menu). My steak was very tender, but also dry and not very flavorful. The entrees came with house made bread rolls which were very good and my baked potato was cooked perfectly. All in all, the service was excellent, the cocktail was perfect, but the food was too bland and portioned small for this price point. read more

She had the house salad and I had the Ceasar. Both were excellent and large. For entrees we both had the CH Special on the menu. Beautiful tender flavorful fillets with a rich mushroom sauce with plenty of Mushrooms. She had the creamed spinach. This is a winner! I enjoyed teriffic twice baked potato. It was x lassic, cheese, chives,bacon and was balanced without over powering the potatoWe capped it off sharing a nice light are with coconut dessert. I think the best part of the meal (other than sharing with my love) was a great French Bordeaux . Charcoal House has been a fixture for years. The food and service are great. Was here just last Saturday. Have been here many times before. NOTHING changes here. Including the menu - and some of the employees. LOL The interior of the restaurant is simple and well done. Looks like it's from the early 1960's. Definitely old-school. Typical higher-end steak house with great tasting steaks. And possibly the best onion rings in St. Louis area. They make them to order. So order 2-3 with your steak. And if you're ordering potatoes. try the hash-browns and add 3-4 pads of butter on top. LOL I ordered the chopped house salad with the house dressing. The house dressing is a bid bland - until you add the Roquefort cheese crumbles. Makes it great. I think (?) they take reservations now, but call and confirm. They didn't use to. Service was pretty good, they were at the least pretty attentive. The ambiance of the place feels like it opened in the 80's and hasn't changed since. The food itself on the other hand, was medium quality at best. Any sauces were definitely from a bag and anything fried was breaded somewhere else frozen and then cooked. The filet mignon was tough but cooked ok. Just wish it had seen some kind of seasoning. Salt pepper or something!! Same story with my fiancée's steak. Very disappointed. Over priced for low quality food. The worst part is the building does not have handicap access! The entrance has 2 stairs and is very narrow. This place is so great. We have been going here for years. An old school steak and fish place, the servers are so friendly and feels like you are family when you are there. Get some onion rings to start (or on your steak). Don't miss the creamy roquefort dressing on your salad, just the right amount, and you'll want to get a roll to wipe up the extra. Steaks are grilled (it is called charcoal house after all) and shrimp is well fried. I also like the lobster tail, just the right size to go with the steak. 300/65 Very significant numbers. My 300th review and I turned 65 years old. I have not written a review in two long weeks because I wanted a special review for 300. Charcoal house is old very old. It is so old I know I have been coming with my parents 50 years ago and now with my wife and children. A little history on Charcoal House. It was THE place to go on Mondays. Why? Because the two major country clubs Algonquin and Westborough are closed on Monday. Since the clubs were closed everyone went to Charcoal House. Nothing really has changed inside or out. Old and dark. The menu has not changed still charcoal cooked steaks, twice baked potato, creamed spinach is the mainstays on the menu. I started with escargot then had a bowl of beef barley soup and finished with a New York strip with baked potato. Yes it is a meat and potato place and it does them perfect. Around the table my son Chip K. had the same as I Mrs. K. the older had a filet and Mrs. K. the younger had shrimp scampi. No complaints about the food from anyone. In fact it was a solid rave from our small group. My steak was cooked to order medium rare and I had it topped with roquefort cheese. Oh my what flavors!! It has been mentioned I turned 65 years old I would also like to mention that I was the youngest male in the restaurant. It is good to come to a place for 50 years and still be the youngest. We had a 5:30 reservation for five. Out of town family in town and decided to take them to a nice restaurant . We were seated and the waitress came over. The first words out of her mouth were " We are very crowded tonight, we over booked and you will have to be finished and leave the table by 7:00." We then heard the owner ask the waitress if she told us that we had to leave by 7:00. The food was fine and our waitress Was fine. We were finished with our dinner at 6:45. I guess it was a good thing that we did not order dessert or an after dinner drink - we probably would have still been at our table at 7:00! Can only wonder what they would have done then. Since they gave us a time limit, it was hard not to feel rushed while we were eating our dinner. That is not the way to treat customers. Not our problem that they over booked. My friend from Europe is visiting America for the first time, and was eager to have a steak. I told her that the Charcoal House would be the perfect place for an old-fashioned American steak experience. We went last night at 8PM and had the Chateaubriand, with the always-wonderful Demetra as our waitress. Business was slow, and at about 8:30, the owner, Mr. Angelos, sat down two tables away from us and began eating his dinner. Another employee then joined him and they talked and laughed very loudly, reverberating through the almost empty restaurant. I tried to ignore them. At about 9, Demetra cleared our plates and brought us after-dinner drinks, and then almost immediately dropped our check. This was harder to ignore, since we had just begun our drinks. But, worse yet, about five minutes later the restaurant lights were turned up. I wrote a note on the back of the check that it was unacceptable for the staff to be eating dinner loudly next to us, for the check to be dropped prematurely, and for the lights to be turned up. I gave the note and a nice cash tip to Demetra and told her I was sure she was just doing what she was told and it was not her fault. We finished quickly, and on the way out I went to a table where Mr. Angelos was sitting with two younger men. In a friendly voice I said that I was surprised that nobody had come to our table to apologize. Mr. Angelos never looked up or said anything, but a dark-haired man became very hostile. "Apologize for what? You were the last people in the restaurant!" Me: "I'm not sure how that is relevant." Him: "Well, the restaurant closes at 9!" Me: "I've been here many times, I know you close at 10, and every website says the same thing!" Him: "Many times? I don't know who you are." Me: "I don't know who you are either, and I don't know how that is relevant. But I do know that this will be the last time." Him. "I hope so." As we left, my friend said, "Well, I was telling you how America seems much friendlier to customers than Europe, but now I have to take that back." Not a good experience. read more

I have visited multiple times over the last several months and have had excellent service from Demetra and Armando. Great steak dinner cooked perfectly! Appetizers are small but quality and presentation is great. Ordered shrimp cocktail, only 4 shrimp per order. But they were large and served in ice. Atmosphere: dim lighting and light music but and get noisy depending on how busy they are. Didn't get to try the chocolate lava cake because we had birthdays at our table.
