This was my first time at J&L BBQ. I was helped by the efficient and practical Denise (wearing a custom apron with her name on it). Like most good BBQ places, it smells great when entering. A real good smoky scent. I learned from Denise that this Monroe location is the 3rd store in this locally owned business. The one in Everett makes the sides, the one in Snohomish smokes the meats and this location just serves it all. Thereby in Monroe the meats are kept in a warmer but that makes it no less tasty! Before ordering, I used Yelp to see what is popular here and the Tri Tip jumped out immediately so I ordered it as a sandwich and it came with one small side. My default choice is Mac n cheese so I ordered that. The Mac N Cheese was very creamy and complimented my sandwich fully. While preparing my sandwich, Denise expertly cut the Tri Tip thinly in front of me and even gave me the ends that would've likely been thrown out. The sandwich is simply served on a warmed bun and you can add BBQ sauce as needed. There is a note that pickles and onions are available but I saw the sign too late. I loved the Tri Tip as it was very tender and full of smoky flavor. Very good! Now I want to try the Snohomish location and see/smell the smoking meats!

We got the brisket sandwich with a jalepeno cheese sausage on it as recommended by the staff.

Had a lovely visit here! The food was very good and the service too. We were greeted right away when we walked in and served a sample of brisket. The team clearly was passionate about their food. We ordered a sandwich with brisket and one with tri-tip. If you have to get one do the brisket. We also tried Mac and cheese and cowboy caviar. Both great sides. The inside of the place was pretty quiet and we sat as people mostly got orders to go.

We tried the beef tri tip, jalapeno and cheddar sausage and the chicken thighs. Our sides were mac and cheese, cowboy caviar and beans. The tri tip and the mac and cheese were my absolute favorite. My husband loved the tri tip as well and the cowboy caviar. The chicken thighs and beans were nothing special but everything else was good

Our go-to BBQ place when we are in the area. This place can get pretty busy so I advise you to call in your order beforehand. Lunch today on the Sunday before Memorial Day was a hour wait! The poor owner was working by herself today. The owners BTW are super nice! We got the brisket and ribs with the corn bread and collard greens, and the baked beans as well. I always judge a BBQ place by it's brisket- whether it's dry or not. This place has brisket so moist you don't need a knife. Smoked flavor is just right. The ribs are also tender and nicely smoked. The collard greens were soft and done up with meat so it took on the smoked flavor and wasn't stringy like some I've had at other BBq places. The corn bread is homemade and served with a honey cinnamon butter-yum!! Hubby loves the baked beans which have a little kick to it. Two plates are ample enough to be shared 4 ways ( we're not large eaters). Happy tummies!

Sausage, Tri tip, Brisket left overs!

Yum! my fav was Brisket. Cornbread is amazing. Tri tip was well cooked. Never had collard greens before, and loved them here. the meal is enough for 2 people, some left overs too.

Great brisket! Ribs are good. Value for money is a bit unbalanced $73 for just a lb of brisket and slab of ribs seems steep!

We ordered the $35 clam orzo and the $54 New York steak medium rare. The New York comes with no sides. $54 is the price for the steak on its own. They don't have a menu of sides and we weren't asked if we wanted any sides with it. The "New York" that we got was literally just a chunk of fat with maybe 5 bites of meat on it. It was literally cold and still blue, so rare. It had barely been put onto the grill. The flavor was bland, like a cheap steak you'd get at buzz in. Definitely not a $50+ steak and was not cooked appropriately. The clam orzo looked promising. Huge portion and smelled delicious, but I took one bite and it was so salty I couldn't eat it. Literally tasted like the salt container fell in it. They did end up refunding us for the steak and the orzo. We paid for our drinks, the calamari and left hungry. Still ended up paying $50 (plus a $10 tip for our nice waitress) for an appetizer, two bottled IPA's and one rum cocktail. Also worth mentioning that the tables are very close together. It felt like we were eating with the strangers next to us. Our seat on one side was a shared bench with other guests and it was very loud, not a problem unless you want to have a semi private conversation. So disappointing after waiting years for a toddler free night to visit this restaurant.. I'm not sure that we will be back. If we do, we will likely visit for the bar and appetizers.

We ended up leaving earlier than we probably would have wanted just cause our baby decided it was time for us to leave. Since we had a baby I'm definitely more aware of how noisy places are that we go to and this is definitely the loudest place of all the places we go. Which looking around there is nothing to absorb the sound. So if you want a quiet setting this is not the place for you. We each had 2 drinks and we had the cornbread as an appetizer and we both got the burger and fries. My main complaint is our fries came out lukewarm, like they had been sitting a long time. Boooooo. Drinks were good as always. Service wasn't bad wasn't great. Our first time here (years ago) was outstanding and now it just feels ok, I'm not sure that we will continue to come here as often as we have. I'm sure we will give it a shot again someday.

Its freezing. The doors are janky and breezy. The seating is like that of a cafeteria. The sound sucks. No atmosphere whatsoever. No beer. Theres a TV there which is nice but good luck seeing it comfortably. I feel bad for the staff. Its a great quality product, but mismatched buzzing 30 yr old fluorescent tubes buzzing overhead with a terrible atmosphere doesnt make for a good environment. Im pretty sure these things are out of control because of whoever owns the building (most building owners on Main st in Monroe cant give 2 fe ks about the businesses there as they are not local) but until their rolls are half off, or they get something better than a Bluetooth speaker to play less shitty music, ill be going elsewhere. Ill probably go again, just to get my fix, but this place needs a serious looking at to improve the atmosphere. Even some fake plants from the dollar store would be an improvement.

I think the people who own this place or at least the people who operate this place are Korean. Prices are nothing crazy. Typical of Washington state prices. Everything was OK, but I was not a big fan of the egg roll. The beef teriyaki I ordered was a little too salty, but not terrible compared to other places I've been to. Overall, this place is not too bad. Service is straightforward. Ambiance was a bit cluttered and unkempt but not bad, like I said
