This was my first time at J&L BBQ. I was helped by the efficient and practical Denise (wearing a custom apron with her name on it). Like most good BBQ places, it smells great when entering. A real good smoky scent. I learned from Denise that this Monroe location is the 3rd store in this locally owned business. The one in Everett makes the sides, the one in Snohomish smokes the meats and this location just serves it all. Thereby in Monroe the meats are kept in a warmer but that makes it no less tasty! Before ordering, I used Yelp to see what is popular here and the Tri Tip jumped out immediately so I ordered it as a sandwich and it came with one small side. My default choice is Mac n cheese so I ordered that. The Mac N Cheese was very creamy and complimented my sandwich fully. While preparing my sandwich, Denise expertly cut the Tri Tip thinly in front of me and even gave me the ends that would've likely been thrown out. The sandwich is simply served on a warmed bun and you can add BBQ sauce as needed. There is a note that pickles and onions are available but I saw the sign too late. I loved the Tri Tip as it was very tender and full of smoky flavor. Very good! Now I want to try the Snohomish location and see/smell the smoking meats!

We got the brisket sandwich with a jalepeno cheese sausage on it as recommended by the staff.

Had a lovely visit here! The food was very good and the service too. We were greeted right away when we walked in and served a sample of brisket. The team clearly was passionate about their food. We ordered a sandwich with brisket and one with tri-tip. If you have to get one do the brisket. We also tried Mac and cheese and cowboy caviar. Both great sides. The inside of the place was pretty quiet and we sat as people mostly got orders to go.

We tried the beef tri tip, jalapeno and cheddar sausage and the chicken thighs. Our sides were mac and cheese, cowboy caviar and beans. The tri tip and the mac and cheese were my absolute favorite. My husband loved the tri tip as well and the cowboy caviar. The chicken thighs and beans were nothing special but everything else was good

Sausage, Tri tip, Brisket left overs!

Yum! my fav was Brisket. Cornbread is amazing. Tri tip was well cooked. Never had collard greens before, and loved them here. the meal is enough for 2 people, some left overs too.

We got a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and brisket sandwich with mac and cheese to go. Sandwiches were tasty and very filling. Mac and cheese was just ok. We were not a fan of the coleslaw. There were pineapple pieces and halved grapes in it.

Brisket, ribs, cornbread, baked beans, collard greens

We ordered the $35 clam orzo and the $54 New York steak medium rare. The New York comes with no sides. $54 is the price for the steak on its own. They don't have a menu of sides and we weren't asked if we wanted any sides with it. The "New York" that we got was literally just a chunk of fat with maybe 5 bites of meat on it. It was literally cold and still blue, so rare. It had barely been put onto the grill. The flavor was bland, like a cheap steak you'd get at buzz in. Definitely not a $50+ steak and was not cooked appropriately. The clam orzo looked promising. Huge portion and smelled delicious, but I took one bite and it was so salty I couldn't eat it. Literally tasted like the salt container fell in it. They did end up refunding us for the steak and the orzo. We paid for our drinks, the calamari and left hungry. Still ended up paying $50 (plus a $10 tip for our nice waitress) for an appetizer, two bottled IPA's and one rum cocktail. Also worth mentioning that the tables are very close together. It felt like we were eating with the strangers next to us. Our seat on one side was a shared bench with other guests and it was very loud, not a problem unless you want to have a semi private conversation. So disappointing after waiting years for a toddler free night to visit this restaurant.. I'm not sure that we will be back. If we do, we will likely visit for the bar and appetizers.

Hubby never gets tired of his 3 star Tom Kah with tofu plus a side of white jasmine rice. It may seem too light as a meal but my hubby always have leftovers. Love the perfectly balanced broth with creamy coconut cream infused against the bright lemongrass flavor. It's his absolute favorite and he would not get anything else even though he likes curry and phad kee mao. I can see why.. My eyes always get big when I have a taste of his soup it certainly wakes up taste buds in the most pleasant way! This soup goes perfect with rice! White rice! There's a milder Benjarong special soup with dumplings I got when I get sick it's a light broth with lots of veggies and minced chicken meat and bean thread noodles in a light broth it was delish as well if you want a mild flavor soup. You can get extra noodles for a charge if you want to have it as a full on noodle bowl meal. I usually like to try different things. Sometimes, I order phad kee mao if I want that bold basil flavor with slabs of flat rice noodles. At other times, I really enjoy their phad woon sen with its mild savory sauce infused throughout the bean thread noodles. I ask for their thai chili condiments caddy and douse more chili sauce and chili/fish sauce for an extra kick which take it to the next level. I get it in vegetarian and ask for extra fresh tofu. Sounds boring but it's craveable. I also get their eggplant dish or garlic delight they are delish as well. Their menu is large enough there's bound to be a favorite for all. The appetizers have always been spot on. Love the grilled thai flavors on the big hunks of chicken satay ask for peanut sauce! Succulent!! You can't go wrong with their classic fresh rolls they are always perfectly made and the fresh crunch against the warm and lightly sweet peanut sauce it is to die for. Lastly, my hubby's new love is the calamari. This is not your typical calamari app as it's perfectly fried without being oily. We love biting into the big chunks of squid rings you can hear the crunch with each bite. The tangy glaze with sprinkled peanuts is perfect for dipping. Get this! Service wise, it has always been a delightful experience for dine in and door dash every time. Love the quiet ambience with their private booths and nice decor. Like they offer quality Asian loose leaf teas and zero percent beer. St Pauli is decent. The owner Panu, wife, and staffs have always been very kind and efficient in providing decent service! I get picky at times and they always cater to what customers want. They have been around forever they know how to deliver good food and service!

Everything was OK, but I was not a big fan of the egg roll. The beef teriyaki I ordered was a little too salty, but not terrible compared to other places I've been to.
