I'm lying awake in bed at 3 am because the DECAF drink I ordered 9 am was obviously not decaf. If insomnia were the only issue, I wouldn't be so peeved. The problem is that caffeine in coffee excites the sciatic nerve pinched by the herniated disc in my back. The resulting muscle tics and spasms are excruciating, so when I finally fall asleep... I'm jolted awake and have to hop around cursing in the dark as I try to relax the bunched up muscles in my leg. I figured out too late why I was sweating like a pig and stuttering like a dope in my business meeting earlier-- the result of forgoing strong caffeine for years and then being dosed to the max. All I'm saying is, make the drink right. If the label says decaf, take it as seriously as other food allergies. The person who orders decaf obviously did so for a reason. I know BLK Dot specializes in Vietnamese coffee, which is ridiculously caffeinated. This is the reason I repeat "DECAF" to the cashier and stress that it's important. Regardless, this is not the first time my drink has effectively poisoned me. If BLK Dot offered a "message the business" option, I would have contacted management with a request they caution employees. But, because that's not an option... When I walked in on a quiet Thursday morning, I was not greeted at all by the two employees working. It was incredibly awkward because they did not acknowledge me, even when I attempted to say hello. Since I was essentially ignored, I used the kiosk to order. While I found the number of options for pastries and crepes to be overwhelming, I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of variety in their coffee menu. The quality of our orders was unfortunately just as poor as the service. I ordered an iced Spanish latte, and my friend ordered a strawberry matcha and a chocolate pistachio croissant. The drinks were flavorless- my latte tasted entirely like milk with no hint of coffee or cinnamon, and the color was noticeably off. The croissant was even worse, as it appeared to have been microwaved and placed in a plastic container, which made the pastry sweat and turn soggy before we even had a chance to eat it. It looked and tasted like a low-grade, bulk-bought item rather than a freshly made pastry, which was particularly frustrating given the price. The only bright spot during the visit was a young man who entered from the back kitchen as I was leaving. He was the only staff member to offer a warm interaction when I said thank you for my order. Aside from that, the atmosphere remained cold and uncomfortable throughout my time in there. It is truly sad to see an establishment that used to be a great spot go so far downhill. I likely won't be returning, but I wanted to share this feedback in the hopes that management addresses these significant lapses in both service and product quality.

A look into their pastry case led me to also request a raspberry danish. The single person behind the counter who was taking orders and working as barista was not exactly charming but it was understandable as she was slammed with multiple customers right when I arrived. My order was presented within a couple minutes (she was great at multitasking!) and I sat out on the patio. The iced mint cold brew was refreshing and was like drinking a box of Campfire Girl mints, both chocolatey and minty (sidebar: I am so sad that, as of last year, those mints are no longer made). It essentially was a mocha made with coconut milk and mint syrup; I really liked it. The pastry was rather dry but the raspberry filling was vibrant in flavor and not overly sweet. The vibe is more of a place for hotel guests to have a business meeting or to grab something prior to dashing off to a corporate event rather than just a place to hang out. But it's also a great option if you are near the Irvine Spectrum and just want to stop to quickly get a coffee drink and sit for a short break.
