We just got home from J Alexander's. We have a nice dinner and celebrating with our Son and Daughter in law. About 9 we were asked to leave after a 3 hr stay and over $300 bill before tip! We've never had that happen! I for one will never be there again! After this I will post on FB! Pick another place that appreciates your business!! read more

Favorite restaurant , period. Have eaten at dozens of J Alex/Redlands through out USA. Usually an experienced bartender providing tasty cocktails. Every meal has to start with spinach queso . Love the big salads but have had most items on menu. Thumbs up on salmon & steaks. Service is always top notch. Ambiance inside is similar to high end steak houses : woody & reasonably quiet. read more

Excellent service, nice date night atmosphere, and great food! Loved the spinach artichoke dip (pro tip: don't mix in the pico - it's better without!) and the burger. Can't wait to go back and try more things! read more

I have written reviews before but this place NEVER disappoints. I had my usual filet with broccoli and a stuffed baked potato for my birthday and it was outstanding. My sister ordered the scallops and were eye popping good. Too full for dessert but their key lime pie and chocolate cake are OMG tempting. read more

Definitely a place to eat again. The service was outstanding, the food was impeccable, and the overall experience was great! I got the grilled rainbow trout and it was amazing. The fish was cooked perfectly, the rice and slaw they service with it was so good. Definitely on the expensive side, but I can't complain with how well my night was eating here. read more

Service was great, however the food was terrible. I had a filet mignon and it was not even seasoned properly. I would not return on my wealthiest day nor do I suggest it to anyone. Drinks are great. read more

We just stopped here for after dinner drinks and I really loved it! I would definitely want to come and enjoy a meal here as I could tell from our drink experience alone it would be pretty great. The staff and bartenders were so kind and personable and poured drinks that got the job done. The wine list was pretty extensive. Cocktails were kept mostly classic. They have a delicious mix of complimentary nuts given at the bar to snack on. Yum! Get these! Located just outside of the outdoor mall making for a convenient stop after a day of shopping, but it really gave off more of a date-night vibe. The space was gorgeous, classy and candlelit with all of the little interior design details I love....Copper pendant lights, glass pendants over the bar with a single long bulb, black and white Art Deco tiles in the restroom, to name a few. Wish I took more photos of the details but my phone died. If the attention to that alone was any indication of the attention given to the menu and food, this place is great. I can only speak for drinks at this time, but for that, I say do it! I would absolutely come here again and want to for an entire meal. I hear the carrot cake is TO. DIE. FOR. read more

The best ribs, the best carrot cake, the best queso!!!! The service is always impeccable too.

I went here with a group a friends. I'll start with the negative, it was a larger party 12. The problem is they only can seat 8 at one table. I called in advance at made reservations so they accommodated us by giving us 2 tables that can seat 8. It is what it is. Upon arrival everyone was nice and polite and they treated us well the entire visit. The waitress was cool. My meal was good i started with the Chicken Pasta Soup. Good not great. It is what the name says. For my main course I had the Steak Maui. This is a Ribeye Steak with a Pineapple barbecue type sauce not a really a glaze, it's not marinated in it either. It's a light sauce that covers it. It's tasty, i went medium well i definitely should have went medium. That would have made it better. The side of green beans were really really good, would have loved to eaten more. For dessert I went with chocolate cake and scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. This was good the cake is slightly brownie tasting it was very tasty. Ill come again, this place is solid read more

Amazing. Food & service! Haven't been since they closed the downtown location. Can you bring back the sweet croissants pretty please

I do not understand what is going on at this restaurant. We met to celebrate a birthday. Before the birthday guest arrived, our waiter asked if he should bring out a dessert with a candle ~ splendid idea. We all ordered the fish sandwich. I didn't think it was possible to screw up a fish sandwich ~ but they did. Through process of elimination we determined it was the coating on the fish that made it taste like soap. We made that comment to our server when he asked if he could wrap our food to take home. If we didn't want to eat it here, why would we want to reheat it and eat it at home? Then he brings out dessert ~ fine. It was very good. The bill arrives, no apologies for the food we couldn't eat and we were charged for the dessert he offered to bring for the birthday. In no way was there any compensation for a most unpleasant food experience. Maybe even the iced tea? and then he was gone, never to be seen again until we were exiting the restaurant. I had to flag down another server to get some ice water. read more

One of the best evenings out in a long time - and it was probably because I spent it here with two friends that I grew up with, known for 25+ years, and spent the night reminiscing over the past and talking about the present and future.... Over martinis, wine, bloody marys....ahhhhhh This was my first time at this restaurant, and as much as I go to Oak Book, I would have never come across this placed, tucked away off of 16th street, behind the container store. Party of 3 at 6:30, was seated immediately. The place was full, but not packed. Atmosphere was dark wood, booths, lighting, but still modern. Service was friendly. The pear martini was made well enough to order two, but a bit pricey at $13/each. The bloody mary was decent, but my friend switched to wine after the first. We started out with the calamari and the artichokes. The calamari was excellent, nice flavor and light breading. I did not try the artichoke, but my friend said they were good. I had the filet kabobs, medium-rare - this came on a bed of rice with a few veggies - a very few, kind of skimpy on the gilled veggies. The filet was good and cooked perfectly. My friends enjoyed their meals. I have no complaints on the food. Not sure if this place is trying to be a steakhouse, if so, it is not up to par. If it is just trying to be an American food place, it lands there well, though would be a tad overpriced. I would come back here with friends, probably sit in the bar area and have a few appetizers and cocktails. read more

J Alexanders is a consistently good place to grab a business lunch or casual dinner at or around the Oak Brook Mall area. The entree salads are HUGE and come with an in house baked croissant. The steaks are perfectly prepared as is the fish and rotisserie chicken. Couple them with what is possibly the biggest baked potato around or some of their "smashed" potatoes and you've got quite a meal (or two, given the leftovers I always seem to have!) I also like the Alex salad which is served with one of my favorite vinaigrette dressings. The bar area is a great place to meet up with people after work while the traffic clears on 22nd Street. While their appetizer menu is not overly imaginative (fried calamari, chicken tenders and spinach dip to name a few) the atmosphere is fun and you can usually find a table. Another plus? I was here for lunch recently and they got us in and out within an hour- perfect for a crazy work day schedule. Parking is plentiful- but if you want a hint- most people park on the west side of the building as the signage directs you there. If you want to get closer to the door (perfect in the Winter when those cold winds are blowing) head to the east side. Plenty of parking and it's actually a little closer. Oh, and don't forget to turn your cell phone off in the dining room. They have enacted a no phone policy and trust me- you'll be on the receiving end of a "dirty look" from the nearby tables if your phone rings and you answer it. It is a chain- but one you can count on for consistency from location to location. read more

This was my first meal after touching down in Chicago and I must say, it did not disappoint! For starters, we ordered the cheese dip and deviled eggs. The deviled eggs were ok. Was not feeling the sweet bacon on top, the cheese dip on the other hand was a winner! Sooo delicious! After those 2 starters split between 3 people, I was already beginning to get a little full but I was set on getting the prime rib. Luckily my friend agreed to split! The chef even portioned it in halves which was great. I opted for Mac and cheese instead of the mashed potatoes it came with. Definitely was a smart move!! The decor is nice and dimly lit so it feels romantic. Great spot for a date! And the service was on point as well. read more

I had the pleasure of dinning here last night with my husband and a friend. We had a fantastic time. Located in a prime spot, this restaurant is clean, charming and inviting. It's on the nicer side but you can still dress casually without feeling out of place. All our food was super tasty. We ordered some delicious deviled eggs and queso spinach dip with chips as our apps. The eggs had a kick to them, but it was the good kind! The dip was served warm and it was great. I ordered the veggie burger as my entree. Which is usually a hit or a miss. This one was a definite hit. It was tasty and filling. I also ordered a side of mashed potatoes. I like my mash with gravy but they don't typically serve gravy with their potatoes. The server suggested bringing out a side of mushroom gravy. I'm so glad he did! It was chalked full of flavor and complimented the taste of the potatoes well. Our server, Frank, was absolutely remarkable. He was super attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about all the items on the menu for both food and drinks. In short, excellent food, excellent service, excellent 5 star rating! To the gang at J. Alexander's, keep up the phenomenal work! read more

This was my first time visiting. So I stepped inside the old brick building and I was intrigued by the low level of lighting and the hardwood interior. In the bar, the wine specials had been written on a blackboard. So this place struck me as being pretty upscale. We were greeted within a few minutes. Despite the recommendation to drink, I ordered iced tea (they inexplicably didn't have lemonade for an Arnold Palmer) and I was pretty surprised how fast the refills kept coming. I couldn't even get through 2/3 of my glass before a fresh tea would arrive from one of the many servers. Very attentive. We started by splitting the redwood salad, which came with field greens, rotisserie chicken, pecans, avocado, tomatoes, bacon, cheese, and croutons. I never eat croutons. Ever. But these weren't the typical crouton that's brick-hard and crispy all the way through. Rather, these chewy, and spongy, and tender. I was amazed how good they were. The chicken was cold and juicy. The crunch of the pecans and bacon worked great with the creaminess of the avocado as well. Instead of ranch, I got the champagne vinaigrette, and it tasted light and citrusy. For $15, that was a very good salad. The NY strip steak tacos were on the specialty menu. I hesitated to order them since they cost $15 and we would only be able to have one taco apiece. Well, I wish I had kept the order to myself. The adobo-spiced strip was grilled to a perfect medium-rare. They came in soft flour tortillas topped with a cilantro-sour cream sauce and chopped pico de gallo. It couldn't have been a much better taco. I don't know if these will remain a part of the menu, but if they are, I'd really recommend them. We also split a French dip sandwich with French fries. I'm usually not a French dip fan, but I heard their prime rib was really good so I figured I'd try it out. And mounds of pink roasted beef came on a French baguette. We also got sides of jus and horseradish sauce. The beef was incredibly juicy, and the horseradish, gave the sandwich just the right amount of kick. But...it was $18. For a French dip. No question, the prices are not exactly great. But I'm ok with paying a little bit extra if the quality of the food is that good. And at J. Alexander's, it is that good. read more

This was a destination for a special occasion, and gladly the meal was up to the celebration. Neither I nor my dining companion had been to this place before, but we wanted to chose something "special." It turned out to be a good choice. It was a nice place without being too formal, but I had the opportunity to dress up a bit. The setting is dim, with heavy, dark-beamed ceilings and big cushy booths. Our waitress seemed to be in training and was a little nervous, but was being shadowed by someone more experienced, and he only had to jump in once (I ordered a cocktail, she left with the order, then he came back to ask what brand of gin I would prefer). Overall, there were no intrusive gaffes. Cocktails were stiff. My Gibson was gin, gin, gin (no surprise), but not even offset by the ghost of onion brine as expected. My companion had a citrus mojito from their cocktail menu, which was bright and bracing. My entree of steak frites was well crafted: perfectly cooked steak, a mound of crisp shoestring fries (though on the salty side for me). His veggie burger was, surprisingly, purple (colored with beets, perhaps?), with an oniony and almost nutty accord, and came with the fries as well. For dessert we split the Very Best Chocolate Cake, which was...fine, though I'm not sure it earns its moniker. It didn't have an extreme depth of chocolate flavor, and the texture was strangely mealy, like banana bread. Just an odd execution. It was, however, big enough for two or more. What WAS good was the giant boule of Blue Bell ice cream (both of us having lived in Texas, we could appreciate this regional delicacy). It was a bit surprising that no bread or such came out before the meal. I'm not sure I've ever been in any restaurant like this that didn't have some sort of "snacky" before the meal (and I don't just mean an appetizer). Maybe that was an oversight on the part of our waitress-in-training? Or maybe they just don't do it, I don't know. Something strange to note about this restaurant: their menu is not listed in full on their web site (that I can find): you just scroll through pictures of a selection of their menu items. So that's rather unsatisfactory. I'm particularly glad for Yelp at times like this! Overall, a good meal, and did not disappoint for a nice occasion. read more

We had a table of six. My beef kabobs were a little grisly and the mashed potatoes luke warm and bland. Another complained that his seared tuna was not good. Nobody raved about their food with the exception of dessert. The carrot cake was unanimously Delicious as was the key lime pie, which I typically don't care for. Service was also erratic. Started off well until our entree's arrived then we had to wait forever to get our drinks refilled. Our bill took forever to get and then our waitress disappeared again, unable to divide our bill amongst our 6 credit cards. We'll try another Oak Brook eatery next time the six of us gather. read more

I like this place, but so far I've only been here for lunch. It has a nice atmosphere and the food always smells delicious. I've had the calamari which was top notch, with just a bit of heat. Really good. The tortilla soup was also great, and the cilantro is a nice touch. I had the steak and frites with acorn squash instead of the fries, and also the shrimp meal. All in all I'd recommend it. The food is great, and the ambiance is friendly and not too fancy. Friendly servers too. I need to try the prime rib and the carrot cake. read more

Prime Rib and Filet Mignon were delicious but sides (mac and cheese and loaded potato) were meh. Modern Mule and Ginger Martini were nothing to write home about. I asked for a glass of house Sauvignon Blanc but server decided to order me a higher priced glass instead. I enjoyed the glass of wine and asked if was the house wine. She told me it was Kim Crawford but cost the same as house wine. I wanted to know if it was from New Zealand, she wasn't sure so I asked her to bring the wine menu back. Only when she brought the menu back that she confessed that it was more expensive than the house wine but tasted better and her friend told her it was the house wine. She didn't offer to change the price on our check so I deducted the difference from her tip. Hint to servers, just be honest. You never know who you're serving! We would normally leave at least 20% or morr but she ended up with on 15% due to her attempt to mislead me! Also ask before you combine to-go meals. Very impressive! I loved everything about this restaurant and I plan to go back again!! I came here for a work dinner- everything was amazingly fresh and tasty. We were told that everything was house made and prepared every day, which definitely showed in the quality. We started with the artichokes which were awesomely smokey and tender. The group ordered a burger, steak and frites, pecan crusted trout and seared ahi tuna salad. I would have gladly eaten any of the dishes on that table, and everyone was pleased with their meals. The staff was beyond amazing. In fact, they gave us two desserts (carrot cake with cream cheese and banana cream pie)- trust me when I say this is the stuff dreams are made of. YUMMMMMMY! read more

I enjoyed this spot! Love the spinach Dip.... Me and Hubby love this place and the ambiance. Prices are reasonable as well.

I haven't been here possibly over a year until I recently went for lunch. The food wasn't as I remembered. Starter: Spinach con queso and salsa: hmmMmmm I love spinach dip and this was one of the best I had, creamy and tasty. Didn't eat the salsa. Entrees: My coworker and I split the Norwegian Grilled Salmon with orzo and the Steak Sandwich. Norwegian Grilled Salmon was a nice thick salmon filet, but it didn't taste fresh. It had a hint of that fishy smell that makes it not appetizing. The orzo was cold, I was expecting something warm as a side whether it be veggies or rice. Steak sandwich was a simple slab of beef in between a set of bread with lettuce and onions. Definitely needs more flavor and the beef was quite chewy and tough to swallow. I was quite disappointment since I remembered it being one of my favorite restaurants. I wonder if the chefs and management has change since I last went? read more

FANTASTIC!! The atmosphere was great. Service was great. We (family party of 4) originally had reservations for 3:15 but arrived an hour early due to a snowstorm coming in and we were cheerfully accommodated. Started with the redwood salad to share for appetizer. I enjoyed, my daughter thought it needed more dressing, oh and it did have a few chicken bones. Entree I had the Steak and fries and the steak was cooked perfectly it went down like ice cream it was SO tender. I normally don't eat fries at a "restaurant" but a great complement to the steak. The coleslaw was fresh and the mac n cheese was decent. I will definitely go again. No drinks :( I was driving. Ordered carrot cake to go. WELL worth the $8 for the large square. DELICIOUS read more

I've been to J's quite a bit over the years. It has gradually deteriorated. I was there with the family about two months ago and the pasta dish was like pure mush. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was inedible. Gave it another chance tonight. Specifically asked what was on the burger my son ordered, wasn't told about the mayo (server said ketchup, which there was none, onions, lettuce and tomato) . They should be careful about giving certain foods to customers for a bunch of reasons. Ordered wine and was eventually told I needed to be a member of the "Chairmen's Club" for that particular Cabernet. I thought that was amusing. I was overcharged for dinner on my son's chicken dish. The server did not tell me there was an entree for a chicken tender platter, and that is not what my son ordered. I just think it may be running its course. read more
