Celebrated Anniversary #17 with a late lunch. I typically order a ribeye, but not on the menu today, so I ordered the strip steak. To say it was grilled to perfection may be an understatement. I have not had this good of a steak in a long time. Cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly, and juicy!!! Wife has the swordfish with tomatoes. She raved about her meal also!!! Had a great time dining on Germantown Parkway ! We had the pasta soup, and the prime rib with 2 loaded potatoes. Followed by key lime pie and chocolate cake Our server was Britney and she was awesome! The food came quickly, hot and correct. The prime rib was medium all the way through. The potatoes were fluffy completely and salted lightly. Oh and that chicken pasta soup was velvety and comforting! I would recommend and early dinner to anyone. Made a reservation for 6:30. We show up early and at 7 we were still at least 3 people away from being seated. Find out they are seating people without reservations before people with reservations. We ended up leaving without eating. We did let them know to take us off the waiting list. Thank you for putting a damper on our anniversary. Tonight my friend and I decided on dinner here since it's been a long time since our last visit. I ordered the steak Maui and loaded baked potato, my friend had the chicken tenders with slaw a s Mac and cheese. Everything came out perfect and tastes AMAZING. I wasn't too sure about this marinated steak, I kept thinking that sounds horrible and will probably taste like a pineapple. There was a sweetness to it but it was not like I imagined. It is something I can say I've tried, liked it, and would order again. The chicken tenders were food as always and the bakes potato well it was a potato. It did come out hot and fresh. There was not a wait when we arrived, we used OpenTable to RSVP, but even at 715pm the restaurant wasn't too crowded. Very disappointing. Had the steak and fries. Unseasoned steak, shoestring fries. Not sure why steak fries aren't the fries paired with it, but they aren't. Menu did not warn the steak would be unseasoned, it was just a little surprise. There is no bread service. My cocktail was the wrong color for the drink I ordered. The unseasoned steak was very stringy. It took forever to eat. My guest had a decent steak, but his smashed potatoes were cold, and oddly plain and dry. It was as if they literally smashed some boiled or baked potatoes and that was it. No discernible seasoning, other than some dried green flakes on top. Absolutely one of the most disappointing $120 meals I have ever had. read more

I've never visited this space even though it's right by the mall. And I'm glad that I finally stepped in. The ambiance was nice, and the customer service was even better. Our server was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and accommodating. We were a party of 4, and we never wanted for anything. I ordered the chicken platter which ended being similar to tenders. Had an 8pm reservation for a party of 6. The food was a 4 out of 5 (a couple of us dine here about once or twice a month.) Our server seemed to be somewhat inexperienced, maybe? She didn't tell us her name in the beginning, she didn't write any of our orders down which resulted in any modifications being missed that she had to correct. Once she brought the bill back in the end she quickly said "Thanks." and walked off. Gratuity had already been added to the bill, we feel the service could have been a lot better, especially for how much the bill was. read more

Great food went in a Sunday really crowded asked for a small area due to celebrating Anniversary but never was honored

When we sold our house in Tampa, our Realtor gave us a gift card to J Alexander's Restaurant. We had been many years ago in Tampa and it was just average. Boy, have things changed in Memphis! We were traveling and decided to use our gift card. The restaurant had an open grill and the chefs were busy cooking some beautiful steaks. My husband had a filet mignon sandwich and I had a French dip. The filet was tender and tasty. The dip was very generously stacked with tender meat and the au jus was great. Service was friendly and efficient. We went to the Chattanooga store, and it couldn't hold a candle to the Memphis place. Wish we lived closer. We'd be your best customers! read more

I have fond memories of coming here with my family after getting married. I am not sure why we picked here but it was a great experience. Hubby and I came back sometime after and we decided to come back once again this time to celebrate 7 years. They've changed the name but it's the same place pretty much. They said they could make things here that were specific to J. Alexander's. The spinach queso was as good as I remembered but there's so much that splitting it with two people actually ended up filling me up pretty quickly. There's only one pasta and it's called rattlesnake pasta. I asked if I could have chicken in it instead and found out it's not not actually rattlesnake- I apparently eat at some very interesting places since I sincerely believed it was. I asked for them to make my pasta spicier and they added more cajun seasoning. This didn't really make it spicier but did unbalance the flavor so I wouldn't do that again. I found I liked mixing hubby's rotisserie chicken into it to balance the flavors a little more. He agreed that it was a good idea. Since it was our anniversary they gave us a free dessert of our choice. We went with the chocolate cake but I wish we'd have gotten the key lime pie. It was a fun experience and wasn't too much more expensive than other places we go to but it's so far away we don't think we would be back anytime soon. I'm obsessed with the experience that I had here. My waiter Stella was a doll and super helpful in making anything I wanted come to fruition. For my drink I ordered the lemon drop martini with a little bit of raspberry. It was delicious! I also ordered the grilled pork with mashed potatoes and a side of Mac n cheese. Now my pork came out cold but it was yummy anyways so I didn't complain. But the best part of my meal was my drink and the Mac n cheese. This restaurant seemed like it would be pretty good and brought to mind other restaurants we've enjoyed that were very similar in California. However, I believe the management is so 'loose' that it deters from the experience. Here's what I mean. The hostess was disconnected from us although she 'greeted' us and called another person to seat us. The restaurant was not busy. We were seated in one of the booths around the raised perimeter of the service area although there were many open tables. It seemed as though our remote location made our service slow and sometimes non-existent although our waitress was friendly. The waitress was responsive when she was with us but it seemed that she did not have the support needed, i.e. bus people to pour water, clear plates, etc. The bar was very slow and I was brought the wrong type the first time although the waitress had the order correct. Tick, tick, tick....sloooooow food service then BOOM! the overly large salads arrived! IMMEDIATELY after the salads arrived the entrees arrived! Nope, you may not put that down (he asked). Please bring it after we've eaten our salad thank you. Sheesh. The kitchen forgot an ingredient featured in the description of my entree. FORGOT it. The waitress offered to replace the entree or bring the ingredient 'on the side' but I opted just to eat as is. So no, we will not return. read more

We came here for the salads at lunch. The front of house wasn't very friendly, but the waiter & manager were. There was an incredibly terrible strong smell of something sour as we walked further into the restaurant. We talked about it with the manager & they said they'd talk with the GM about the odor. Salads were good, but the smell was something we were not able to look past. Will probably not return. read more

It had me going to the bathroom like 10 minutes into my meal and as disgusting as it sounds, I had diarrhea so as soon as I was done I just walked out with my fam. J. Alexander's is one of my favorite restaurants. It's reliably excellent, and service is always great. This past Friday, we visited and started with their house salad. It's one of the best salads anywhere, and I especially love the honey glazed croissant that comes with it! I then had grilled salmon, with orzo & wild rice - which is what I order most every time I visit. It was excellent, just like always. My husband got their prime rib sandwich (not sure if that's the name), and he was happy with it as well. Service here is impeccable. Our server was on top of every detail, and I also appreciated that other servers seem to chip in & help each other out, picking up empty plates, refilling drinks, etc. It seems like a real team environment. They do get busy, so we always like to make reservations. My favorite is the prime rib. It's so tender and flavorful. The best steak on the menu in my opinion. I've always loved coming here several times a month to where they know our names even after the waitress recently spilled scotching hot bbq sauce on me and they brought me a towel and honey to smooth the burn. I ordered ribs(they have the best!) and my mom convinced me to order a side of sauce.
