What an amazing find! While walking with my son in his Brooklyn neighborhood, I started to look for a place to rest and grab some lunch. We had just exited a nearby grocery store and spotted Ix. From the outside it was unclear what kind of food was happening inside, but they looked friendly and had an open table in the back. A very nice waiter brought us cold water right away and handed us two menus glued into an old vinyl record, hinged to open like a book. Honestly, it was really hard to pick where to start/what to order. We asked the waiter for a suggestion and he recommended starting with an appetizer of melted cheese and garlic, served with soft blue corn tortillas on the side. We also ordered a sandwich and a chipotle chicken and corn soup. The melted cheese app was incredible. Like-go back another time soon- good. I loved the soup as well. It was big and super fresh and came with a big cut up lime and a small crock of chopped onion and cilantro. My son loved his sandwich, which came with an optional side of a pepper infused oil for dipping. We were considering dessert when another patron came in and asked to share our table. Ix has a unique menu that has a little something for everyone. Complimentary bean dip and chips when you dine in. One thing that is not on the menu (if dining in), are their ribs. Ix's was pretty close to the AirBnB we stayed at and we walked here for brunch one day. The minute we walked in we knew we had not made a mistake. The restaurant was lightly fragrant of spices and immediately made you feel warm inside. I really wish we could remember which soup/stew we ordered because it was honestly the star of the show. I think it was the Caldo Tlalpeno rojo. It was warm and savory-filled with vegetables and shredded chicken it was plenty filling. We ordered the TPC sub which was a sandwich with chicken, peanut, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, and pickled carrots. This was okay...I would recommend sticking with the soup. So I think I had walked by here a few times and, being in a rush, didn't have it click that it was not part of the neighboring restaurant- how embarrassing on my part! So, be careful, there's a chance you might miss it if you're not careful. I came here with a friend and we both had a beer and the Cubano sandwich. It was perfectly prepared and had a fair price. This was during the time of covid, but when cases were relatively low in the city at that point. So, we ate outside. We were pleased with the safety precautions the restaurant took. Stopped here on Thanksgiving Day after flying in from Buffalo. We were on a mission for lunch and coffee and we found just that. However, the lunch was meh and the coffee was just coffee, despite serving La Colombe. I really was craving an iced chai latte and it truly was flavorless milky fluid and I was very bummed out. The interior of the place is awesome, aesthetically. However, the food left something to be desired. The service was quick and friendly, I'll give them that. Got the sandwich with turkey and avocado which was a mistake. It wasn't bad, but their bread is not sandwich friendly. A bit too chewy. The soup my friend got however, was delicious. Definitely have to try their hot chocolate. I ordered a ginger cayenne hot chocolate which had dried ginger pieces in it. It was very chocolaty, not too sweet and I could taste the ginger and pepper. We were a party of five seated immediately. I absolutely adore the decor of this place, as well as the newspaper article on the stews for some historical context about the place we were eating at. They also gave us free bean and cheese dip with chips; you can ask for more chips but it's an extra $2 and the staff doesn't tell you that (and the refill itself it pretty small compared to the first basket). I ordered the lavender relaxer mimosa and had to send it back because we saw lipstick on the rim of the glass. Hopefully the drink was remade instead of just being poured into a clean glass lol, but the same sprit of lavender was re-used from the original glass they gave me. I split the Jocon soup and Cubano sandwich with a friend, and I absolutely loved BOTH, especially the soup. The flavor of it was just so unlike anything I've ever tasted, but still gave me familiar soul food vibes. They also gave us tortillas in a little pouch and chili oil to eat with our meal. If you're paying with card, the staff will bring out a card reader to your table; after we paid, I had to ask for an itemized receipt since they don't provide one for you. I didn't realize until we had left that they had over-charged us by one drink, which was disappointing considering I had to get one remade. In any case, I'd love to give this place five stars because the food was amazing but will be deducting one star for cleanliness and being overcharged. read more

The chef JMC has give his own touch to the variety of Guatemalan dishes they offer on the menu, as a native Guatemalan that lives away from home and 5 hrs. From the restaurant... This is like ordering from an Asian fusion restaurant: there's a bunch of different cuisines on the menu and none of them are very good. Sandwich (the peanut one) was dry as the desert (stale bread?) and had no flavor. Probably the most disappointing case of expectation vs reality I've had in a while. Sounded great, tasted like nothing. I was so sad, I was so excited about this sandwich, but it did not deliver at all (no pun...). The soup, Caldo Tlalpeno Rojo was okay, but all it really tasted of was adobo, no other flavors came through for me. I did love the texture of the cheese and the tortillas in the soup. Macaron was delicious. Delivery was quick and the guy was nice. Never again, though. My impression of this place is that it's a gentrified spot serving "ethnic flavors" to people from Ohio who now live in PLG. Great coffee, great brunch food, *ridiculous* soups, and off the hook hot cocoa from the village of the owners. The chef here just moved back from 8 years in Europe, where he had a restaurant that sourced from France, Germany, Italy and more. You can taste this cosmopolitan approach in his food, which is like a love letter to Guatemala written in different languages. Isn't fusion food just what we need in these divided times? This restaurant is one of the best in the neighborhood. It is my go-to for coffee and I love the little outdoor ordering window, especially during COVID. In addition to a great coffee, the Pepian soup is my favorite thing on the menu when I want lunch to-go or have time to sit down for a meal. It is so flavorful! When my partner and I have visitors in town, we always take them here. I am looking forward to the time when indoor dining resumes because the interior is full of beautiful murals and vibrant decorations. We ended up having to settle with tiny cups of hot cacao that came out to be almost $8 apiece. We subbed in soy milk for 75 cents extra, but even when we just go with regular milk, our cups would still be roughly $7 per cup which is ridiculous. Only one size, unless the lady serving us forgot to suggest different sizes. Ix Café recently took over the space of another coffee spot (which I don't remember the name of) so they're relatively new to the space. The menu is a fusion of Guatemalan, Asian, and European cuisine which makes for an interesting selection. I stuck with a Cubano which came with a side salad ($10) and it was delicious (and filling). I can't wait to give the rest of their menu a try. Kimchi and pancetta on the same sandwich, whaaaaat? This stuff is uncommonly delicious. I could happily eat all of the things I've tried here indefinitely. Vegetarians and vegans take note: the person who answered the phone told me that they could make all of the soups & stews vegetarian without compromising the flavor, and they were right. The cacao aguado is super good. It's literally chocolate water, I know, but just try it, and don't get carried away with any preconceived notion that chocolate should only be drank with milk. The only point I can make against Ix is that they really pack things uhhh tightly - all of the containers in my takeout order were wrapped in plastic. I know they mean well, and that my drinks would probably spill over without such tight wrapping, but I do hope that they can eventually find a less wasteful way to accomplish the same. read more

The food and drinks here are really great (especially the soups and the hot chocolates). The atmosphere is also lovely. But I have to knock off one star because of their no-laptop policy on weekends. I don't mind that they have this policy in place - lots of places in Brooklyn do and I completely understand it. But most places put signs up, so you know you should go somewhere else if you want to work. In our case, we'd already ordered (a lot) of food when they came up to tell me I had to put my laptop away, as they don't allow them on weekends.
