They took my friend who was visiting last minute for a massage. You should be aware that this place is a one woman show who will answer the phone during your treatment. I can appreciate keeping down costs, but my friend was a bit put-off by this practice. Also, the room is not your traditional zen-like spa atmosphere. It's located on a back road of Kaka'ako near auto shops and other loud businesses which distracts from the relaxation that you hope to achieve. Cost is very affordable which bumps up the star rating. This review is based solely on my boyfriends experience here. My boyfriend went here twice and loved both sessions! My boyfriend golfs, workouts on a daily basis, and recently dislocated his shoulder. His therapist asked exactly where his complaints were and did an excellent job working on his problem areas. I made a last minute reservation on Saturday for a 90 minute session. They booked my boyfriend at 5-630pm. On Saturdays, they close at 6pm, but was able to accommodate us! Awesome! read more

I love this place because you can usually get a decent massage at a moment's notice. I love the hours and the proximity to my place and ease of parking. Maria is great and I can see why people ask for her on a regular basis! The therapists seems to be a bit hit or miss after that. I've worked with another pretty good therapist and one that was AWFUL. She climbed on top of me without asking, argued with me about what type of massage I wanted, and jerked my limbs around when I let her know I had herniated discs and needed a little care taken. She also talked to me about inappropriate subjects like my relationship status and her sex life. Ick. I'm pretty introverted with new people so I didn't feel like I could speak up. The place is a little funky and sometimes it's too cold (just sheets on the massage table). I also feel like they tend to focus mostly on backs and miss out on other areas (my quads have definitely gotten short shrift and I'm a runner/swimmer and need work on them!). So let's start out with the obvious; this is NOT A SPA or fancy place by any stretch of the imagination. The location alone can make you not get out of your car and drive away......BUT DON'T! Get out of the car, walk around the back and up the stairs and be prepared for some serious body work. The BF and I had just spent 4 days powering on packing and cleaning my 4/3 home for a move to Kailua-Kona from Oahu. We never thought we would hurt in so many places by doing the work ourselves. By day 5, I could no longer listen to his moaning and groaning so I decided to find us a place for a massage. After reading several reviews about this place and seeing that they were voted Hawaii's best in 2014, I decided to give them a call. I got a voicemail that prompted me to leave my number and desired service, which I did. Shortly thereafter, I received a text message stating they could get us in that afternoon and provide a couples massage. The BF was in way worse condition than me so Darilyn decided to take pity upon his pitiful self and said, "you, come with me". I had Debbie as my therapist. 90 minutes later, we were both new humans and could actually function like a normal human being. The BEST part is the fact that the BF was no longer moaning and groaning. Thank you Darilyn!!! His whining was about to be the death of me but Darilyn saved me! I highly recommend this place and both of these therapists. They're very professional and seriously good at what they do. Darilyn took the time to find out what our expectations and needs were prior to the massage, which isn't always the case when you get a "consultation" before your service. Many thanks to those ladies. The worst part about writing this review is knowing they are located on Oahu and now we're on the Big Island. We would be regulars there if we were still living over there. Now, we'll just have to make it a point to book an appointment the next time we visit Oahu. Sure you could go to a massage to relax and potentially fall asleep, but if you're like me and sit at a computer for almost 8 hours a day, commute for an hour and well, sit on your behind watching TV, you probably suffer from chronic back pain just like me. Most masseuses just don't get in deep enough to help relieve my pain. Yelp helped me on my quest to locate a massage shop that focuses on pain management. In the heart of Kakaako next to Fresh Cafe, Island Therapy massage sits above a church. They share parking with the church, which I have never had trouble finding. It might be more difficult if you came on a Sunday though. The lady who runs the shop has masseuses only come in if they have appointments. This no frills location usually doesn't even have someone at the desk. Therefore, the door stays locked during sessions. Just knock a few times (speakeasy style) and wait patiently outside. There are three therapy rooms. Each one seems to be lit with something similar to a blacklist and are individually climate controlled. Sandi, my masseuse, knows how to make me grin and bear it. She tends to be talkative and speaks to you about what she notices and what your lifestyle is doing to contribute to your pain. Like I said, no relaxing here. I'm sure you could if you asked. That's the beauty of this place. You get exactly what you ask for. I come for an hour solely on my back, which is exactly what I need. The prices are also fantastic as well! $65 for 60 minutes, which is about the same as what I used to pay on base. This isn't Laniwai. That would be like comparing apples to oranges. In fact, you don't even need to call this a massage. I would call it trigger point therapy. And therapy you shall receive. read more

I'm a powerlifter, so regular sports massages are a must for me. I've received amazing massages from Dari Lyn and David. Both of them really get all of the knots out and apply just the right amount of pressure. If I could get a massage every month, I would, but I try to go at least every 2-3 months. I took heed of all the wonderful reviews and gave this place a try. I am glad I did. It was a great experience starting from booking the appointment all the way to receiving my masage. I filled out the reservation form online and heard back immediately even though I wanted to book an appointment the next day! I was able to do so without even lifting up the phone. The place is on the second floor of the building. There is a small parking lot in front. You can see the sign from the road, but you have to walk around back and up the stairs to get there. There's a sign on the door telling you knock, as they might be in session. The place is cute and clean. I think there were three massage rooms. My massage was awesome. My massage therapist was very professional did not talk much so I could just relax. (Have you ever been somewhere where they talked your ear off the whole time you were there?) I think I even fell asleep at one point! My therapist was also sure to ask that the pressure was just right. Using a credit card, a one hour massage came to about $68.00. Tired, achy, and with plenty of tension in my neck and upper body... I knew the first thing I wanted to do after stepping off that plane was to get the best massage closets to the airport. This is where the Yelp app. was extra useful, I did a quick review of the places nearby and eventually chose this one. Relatively easy to find, but extremely difficult to find suitable parking nearby. There are tons of busy auto garages nearby with extremely limited parking, I had to eventually drive into a public lot. I walked in and the owner (not exactly sure of her name) was busy with another client but called another masseuse immediately to assist. I only had to wait roughly half and hour, I didn't mind waiting in an air conditioned room outside of the Hawaiian humidity. She was very professional and even had me fill out a basic patient history form. There seemed to be only two rooms here; so I assume it's probably best to schedule in advance. The massage I got here was like no other, but I don't often get massages so I guess I don't have much to compare it to. Deep tissue, swedish, or shiatsu... I'm not quite sure what technique my massage therapist used but it was just what I needed to start my vacation off right. I had some areas worked on that I didn't even realize I had tension in... but of course there is a connection with many muscles. Hurts so goooood.... That's what kept repeating in my mind while I was trying to hold back tears of joy and pain during my massage session with Angel. This is by far the best and educational massage session I've ever had. I don't ever talk during massages since it's supposed to be a relaxing experience but I couldn't help but jabber away with Angel since she kept finding all the kinks and knots in my body that I never knew existed. She told me which muscle is connected to what and tried to figure out what I was doing to cause the muscle tension. I'm so appreciative of that cause now I know that slouching is making my shoulder muscles tight which is causing my ribs to push towards my back. She actually COUNTED how many ribs were out of alignment just from pushing on my muscles. Amazing. You know when you get a massage the masseuse goes over that one spot that you're like "yeah, right there"? Well that was pretty much my whole massage, and before I could even say those words I'd hear Angel say lightly "there it is" and proceed to dig deeper into the muscle to loosen it up. The massage was excellent, and without going too much into detail, it felt really, really good. Maria is extremely versatile and used a combination of different massage techniques during the 60-minute massage. It really is as good as everyone else says. Having read most of the Yelp reviews for Island Therapy before going, I would like to address some of the concerns in previous reviews. - Island Therapy sits right across a moped rental business, and past reviewers have complained about the noise. Since then, efforts have been made to semi-soundproof the massage rooms, and I personally did not hear any outside noises over the soft background music that was playing. If there were any outside noises, they did not distract from the massage. The rooms were spacious, and two people could probably be massaged in one room. - Although it's possible that I got lucky, I had no problem finding parking, as I was able to find a space in front of the church (which sits in the same building below Island Therapy). - For the reviewers who complained about it not being cool enough, not enough oil, etc., please understand that if you're getting a massage, your feedback before or during the massage plays a big part in how good your massage is. It is much easier for you to make requests than it is for a massage therapist to read your mind. This being said, Maria was very proactive in seeking feedback, and was very responsive to the feedback that was given. She was friendly and professional at all times. She did not answer the phone during the massage, and I believe she actually rejected a call as the massage was about to start. - It's true that there are no fancy waterfalls or other embellishments, and yes, this is a simple operation. After a morning of work in the rain and an afternoon at the Honolulu Museum of Art, I made the call to see if Island Therapy had an opening. Lucky me, I found myself 45 minutes from that healing feeling. What an unpretentious place but home to some amazing hands! I was paired with Nieva--and, boy, does she have some mad skills! I kind of understated how firm of a touch I wanted, but, once I told her to go as firm as she needed, she had it down in spades! Very thorough and methodical, she made her way through all my trouble spots--and I had a lot! So glad I went with 1 1/2 hour. I went to ER because of excruciating pain in my neck, head, all left side of my back. Found out it was muscle spasm in my neck. They gave me pain medication and nothing else. Once the pain meds wore off, the pain came back with vengeance. I asked for Debbie at Island Theraphy. I waited an hour and a half for her, but boy was it worth the wait. She really took out all the knots all over my shoulders and in my neck, and she still spent enough time within the hour to massage my whole body. As other reviewers have mentioned, Debbie is a petite lady but she's pretty strong. During the massage, she'd check if the pressure was okay but not so much that it was irritating. I'm a huge fan of deep tissue and these ladies r strong (don't let their petite size fool u)! Been to Maria, Debbie, Darylin & 2 more I'm forgetting the names off the top of my head but that's how good they are. It's the only massage place I've ever been where it doesn't matter who's working on you because they are each knowledgable, strong & thorough. The other best part about this place is you can book appointments via text! Maria does a great job accommodating to last minute bookings, which is usually that's when you need a massage the most! Prices are reasonable at $65 an hour and this place is legit in getting out all of your knots and kinks. The massage I received by Maria was the best message I have personally experienced. My reason for going in was that my back had been hurting. After my session, my back felt so much better. I contacted Island Therapy through their website and received a quick response back from the owner of Island Therapy, Maria. Location: There's a big sign outside that says "Island Therapy", you can't miss it! There are a couple parking stalls in the front that says "customer parking". The business itself, is located on the 2nd floor. Just walk to the back of the building and you will see a staircase that leads up to it. It's a cute place and the room where I received my massage was very calming and tranquil with nice soothing music. I also appreciated the artwork located on the walls and on the ceiling. We had a great experience at Island Therapy! I found Island Therapy on yelp and decided to give it a try when we went to Oahu. We usually opt for the massages at the hotels out of convenience but I'm so glad we decided to try a different route this time. I checked out the website online and we decided to do a couples massage for 2 hours. The prices are great! The quality of the massages are even better! I worked with Maria in booking the massage and making the payment. She was so nice, such a pleasure to work with! She was very on top of things and even reminded me of our massage the day before. I suffer chronic neck injuries from an auto accident and in excruciating pain all day, every day. I have also been receiving monthly massages for years. I'm visiting Hawaii for my birthday and sought elegant spa's in the area to sooth me from what feels like the worst pains of my life. Upon arrival, the lady that massaged me (Debbie) stated I have tons of muscle mass and she wasn't quite sure how well she could do as a result. HAH...yeah right, despite me receiving monthly massages from some of the best of the best for years, this woman was EASILY one of the best I have gone to in my ENTIRE LIFE!!! She worked extremely hard to get rid of my pains, rather than simply try to work the clock. There are knots I've had for years she made it a huge point to get out. I eat my original thoughts of laughter at the reviews, and realized, this place is simply amazing. I highly recommend this place to visitors and locals to the area. OMG! After searching for several years for a consistently great massage, I've finally found the best I have ever experienced. Maria is AMAZING! She doesn't give you a pre-packaged massage routine, instead she customizes her work on you in the areas that you need it most. I have seen at least 20-30 different masseuse over the years both here in Honolulu and on the mainland. Finding a masseuse who is intelligent and skilled in massage has been a struggle. I would like to say that I have found a masseuse who is excellent!!! Her name is Nieve pronounced (NEEVA). She is extremely knowledgeable about the body, gives her 100% to make you feel better. She truly cares about making you feel better! Most masseuse are not really attuned to the human body but because Nieve is studying to be in the medical field she is excellent at knowing how and where to concentrate massaging given the time she has to work on you. Believe what you read in these reviews. The staff at this place know how to please. I am so happy I chose to call after checking out Yelp. I set up a couple's massage for my husband and I, we were given an appointment only two hours later. The communication was via text and details were accurate. The room was quickly adapted to fit a second bed and we were getting massaged less than 3 hours after our initial call.
