Snagged a same day massage the day after I went on an intense hike. Maria was great! Really firm pressure where I wanted it and just enough on my super sore calves (couldn't handle the firmer pressure there). She really worked out a lot of the tension in my shoulders and neck. After trying several different places, I finally found a massage studio that I like -- Island Therapy. It's not "spa-like," so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't the place. However, if you want a solid massage in a studio that's convenient and clean, I think you'll like Island Therapy. I've been seeing Mai for about a year. She's a very skilled massage therapist -- don't let her small frame fool you, she's strong and really knows how to work out knots. She's also an intuitive therapist; she always seems to know exactly where I'm hurting. I should mention that Mai's massages lean therapeutic rather than relaxing, so if you're looking for something more soothing, let her know beforehand. I have an old injury, and her massages have made a real difference -- I used to have a constant, dull ache, but since seeing her once a month, I haven't had any issues. Booking is done through text, and I usually hear back within 20-30 minutes -- very convenient. I also think her prices are very reasonable, especially given her level of skill. I once saw a massage therapist who charged $350 for a two-hour massage -- great massage, but not sustainable long-term. Still my go-to place for a full body massage. I told my parents about this place, and they wanted to go with me. I booked two 90 min massages for both me and my mom. To book an appointment, you can either go online or call . If they don't answer, Maria will either call you back the same day and also text you. She will text you two days before your service to confirm your appointment. When my mom and I arrived for our appointment, there are at least 5 available parking stalls in front of the establishment. I texted Maria and we walked up the stairs to be greeted by our masseuse. There is a restroom inside if you need to use it before or after your service. Also it is always good to communicate with your masseuse what areas are needed to be worked on and what level of pressure you would like before they perform the service. There's a sign on the door that directs you to allow them a 5 minute grace period as they may be finishing up with another client before calling the phone number listed. I gave the number a call and Maria answered but didn't have my appointment on the schedule. She apologized and we were able to reschedule for a later time, no problem! This was my first time at Island Therapy. I heard about them and decided to try out a session through some extensive research that I did for my finacé's birthday gift, who has major back issues. He said he had a great experience, so I decided to book a session. I am a teacher and grad student, so I am on the computer and sitting at a desk for about 14-16 hours a day. I have a lot of tension and knots deep in my shoulder blades and neck area, which I specified. Although I received a full body message (which I didn't know I needed until the very day), the therapist I had (sorry, I wasn't told her name) focused mainly on my neck and shoulders. She was very nice and thorough, and she was gentle when she had to move certain parts of my body. I also didn't know that I would be getting the full experience! She used hot rocks, a suction cup (which I never had before, and it was SO AMAZING), and I got some thai message techniques, which I loved as well. At the end of my 60 minute session, I was feeling so relieved. My shoulder blade had this pinching pain the day and night before, which made it very difficult to sleep, but now I feel like I can sleep peacefully from how relieved and relaxed my body feels. The only "negative" point I would make is about asking about the pressure. She asked me about it in the beginning and not after that. While my body can handle a good amount of pressure, there are certain areas where I'm sensitive. IT'S NOT HER FAULT THOUGH! I know I should have said something (and thankfully she was able to tell right away. I would twitch slightly and she asked if I was okay.) I am the type of person who doesn't like to inconvenience people and feel like an inconvenience a lot, so I didn't want to stop her flow of things! (Silly, I know). That minor point did not, in any way, shape, or form, affected my overall experience because she was so quick to adjust to my needs. I just visited Island Therapy for the first time, and I highly recommend them for a relaxing, relatively more affordable massage in Honolulu. Nicole was my massage therapist, and she was fantastic. My shoulders were actually a little less crooked when I walked out compared to when I walked in (no joke!). When you first walk in, they offer you water, and offer to let you use the cute bathroom. The water was crisp and filtered, and the bathroom was cozy and clean. As a first time customer, they ask you to fill out a customer information sheet, including contact information, any problem areas (for the massage), any areas you wish for your therapist to avoid, and a pressure level (1-5 scale; I put 4 to 5). During the massage, I found that Nicole was aware and responsive to these preferences from the start. Speaking of Nicole, she was wonderful. Soon after the massage started, she asked me if the pressure level was OK. It was perfect, and it felt like I expected a "4 to 5" pressure level to feel. Whenever I get a massage, I am always worried that the temperature in the room is going to be too cold (I consider 72°F to be chilly), but it was just right. Admittedly I did get a little cold at one point, but I am on the extreme end of always cold so I can't fault them for that. TLDR; Easy free parking right out front! He mentioned to me that during the day he works at a clinic doing massages for people with injuries. My massage therapist was very intuitive and a great listener to my needs. Disappointed. As a massage therapist myself, i am very choosy in finding a place to go. On the day that i went, it was a last minute appointment due to a headache caused by tightness in my neck. Island therapy was the first business that showed up with good ratings so i made contact. I specified my needs.. deep tissue or very firm swedish. Communication was very prompt and appointment was set. I was greeted by a friendly staff, introduced to my therapist and was situated for my 90min session. Once ready, my therapist came in and went straight to squeezing and poking at my neck before situating my back draping. My therapist continued at the poking and squeezing on my neck for about 10-15 minutes until i mentioned that my session was for 90min and if this would be a full body massage. He responded yes and stopped working on my neck. My therapist continued to work on me, BUT while sitting down on a rolling chair, so i didn't receive a firm swedish or deep tissue massage. One leg was given detailed attention and the other didn't. It was difficult to relax with the rolling of the chair on the wooden floors. I'm not disappointed with my therapist as we all have different techniques and modalities. I'm disappointed that after my specific request, a service was offered to me that didn't come close to what i was requesting. Found this place on Yelp. Read the reviews and decided to booked an appointment online for Christmas Eve 6 pm (yeah I know, kinda selfish huh) so I thought it was booked. The lady handling the scheduling said she tried emailing and calling me back to let me know there were no masseurs available at that time. Parking is available (thank God!) because you wouldn't be able to find any in this neighborhood (mostly auto repairs shops and bars) it just looks like residential parking stalls cuz the way it's set up. I sat in my vehicle for 5 minutes trying to figure out "how do I get up stairs?" Duh you have to be let in It started pouring down rain now. After 10 minutes, a dude parked and ran towards the gate into the residential parking and got in that way. I finally called the appt. line again and the lady said the gate should be open. Sure enough I glanced back up and it was I got upstairs (small, but clean) and a gentleman had me fill out paperwork (DO NOT give your ssn only last 4) on application. They shouldn't be asking for that kind of info for a massage Being female, It would've been nice to be told by the scheduler a head of time that my masseuse was male (but luckily I preferred male) just good customer Svc. My masseuse (Jon/John BASS) was sooo amazingly AWESOME that it almost made up for the chaotic and weird initial "booking and arrival" I just experience. ‍ I choose the "trigger massage" with Mr. Bass. You will need to knock once you're at the door to inform the ladies that you're here. There are 3 rooms for the massage sessions. A bathroom is also available. If you're a first time client, you will need to fill out a form. Basic questions, and you can let them know of areas that you don't want them to massage. The rates are: $65/60 mins $90/90 mins $130/120 mins $40/30 mins (Plus taxes) Always good to arrive early so that way you can prepare yourself for the massage session. Filling paperwork, taking your clothes off (or leave it on), and getting yourself situated for the massage session. There is free parking in the front of the building. The buidling is like a hidden little gem, so you will need to actually be on the lookout when you're driving down Queen St. if you're not familiar with the area. I got a deep tissue massage in Malaysia about a month ago and had been having lower back pain ever since I got back to Hawaii. I was fed up with the pain and messaged Island Therapy via Yelp to book an appointment. Maria responded within 10 minutes and was able to accommodate me for a 6pm appointment the same day. Parking was easy, right in front of the building and free. The entrance is on the side of the building and up the stairs. Debbie was my masseuse. She was really friendly and offered me a cup of cold water. She found some knots in my back that she massaged out. In addition to the bad massage I had overseas, she said my pain had to do with my diet and I shouldn't eat so much fatty foods. I believe it. I had been eating a lot of cheese, bread, and crackers. At one point she was pressing too hard, but she explained that she had to get the blood flowing in that area because it's all stuck and it's not circulating well. She showed me how to do it myself on my arms and said to do it frequently to help with circulation. Honestly, I haven't been doing it. I would rather have someone do it for me. After my massage, I went home and googled massage therapy for better circulation. It does help to improve circulation and some medical conditions such as high blood pressure, which I have had issues with from time to time. My back hurt for a few days afterwards, but it was a good kind of hurt. Once you arrive at the building walk down the alley (looks like residential) and the first stairway on your left is where you ascend into massage heaven.
