My friends and I had dinner at INYO again last night. Friday's are generally Busy, but the service & food was still excellent. We were seated in a booth which gave just-enough privacy. Fun Ambiance and nice crowd. If you don't like a crowd, then the obvious thing to do is try it on a weekday for lunch/dinner. Spring rolls & cherry-like sauce is great ! Sushi comes out on a plate that is lit on fire. It definitely turns heads. I think the dynamite roll or dragon, ask the server - this is cool to see. Okay food and atmosphere, service was horrible. Ordered several rolls and a bottle of wine. Moments after finishing dinner and paying (and leaving a 20% tip), we were asked to leave by our waitress because her manager needed the table since they were so busy. I was appalled. Upon leaving and walking around the building we could see she had pushed the table up to her table of friends that were seated next to us. In hindsight I should have asked to speak to the manager and adjusted her tip, but I was disgusted and didn't think of it. TLDR: it looks fancy but it's just alright. Their shrimp appetizer was cooked well and tasted great but it cost $8 for 4-5 pieces of shrimp. Their sushi was okay. The food was good, but the service was off. It was a pretty slow week night, so it was surprising. We ordered a chili tuna roll, but were delivered a Vegas roll (he confirmed this in his notes). When I said something to the waiter he said, "don't touch it! I'm coming back." He came back with a plate and insisted that we place it on there so he could bring it back to the kitchen. When I asked if we could just keep it, he said "not unless you want to be charged for it." This was strange. Made it seem like it would be reserved to someone else. Also, my partner made a point that she was allergic to sesame seeds. He confirmed, and then served us a sauce with sesame seeds without saying anything (good thing we noticed!). Then, when we were paying the bill with credit cards, he came back twice - once because he gave us the wrong bill and then saying he charged the wrong table's order and had to refund the card and run it again. Then, the manager came over. We assumed it was to apologize, but it was only to ask if she could keep our receipts. Not apologetic at all. When I got there, the hostess girl couldn't match my name up with my order...basic stuff. I ordered the spicy crispy chicken, and got what looked like general tso chicken... Saucy and definitely not crispy. The three sushi rolls I ordered were mixed completely with someone else's takeout order...even after I had confirmed what three rolls I ordered. The rolls given me were vegetarian rolls... I feel jipped. Come to find out 40 minutes later by a voicemail, that if I wanted my rolls, I had to drive 40 minutes back to get it. NO THANKS. The sushi I had was mediocre at best...and that's being generous. Highly disappointed, won't be returning. Lesson learned. This dude I know had a rough week and wanted to relax with a nice meal and good company. Between Inyo and me, I think he got what he was looking for. Note the compliment I just gave myself. Inyo's part in this was decent fare and an intimate setting. I'm thinking the restaurant is a cover and Inyo's real trade is in secrets. They've got these privacy booths that make you feel like no one is around, so you start having the kind of conversations you'd only have at home. Then the waitress comes around and you think: oh my god, did she just hear that? Yeah, she totally did. And now she's telling all her co-workers. Oops. So while Inyo is interested in your secrets, you're probably interested in their food. Let's do this list style, because it's easier for us both. I'm lazy, you're lazy, it's no big deal. -Rainbow Carpaccio - it's good! Beware of habaneros, there are big pieces out to get you. -Beef Maki Mono (beef wrapped asparagus) - I couldn't taste the asparagus at all, but the beef was tender and the sauce was tasty. -Kani Su (Alaskan king crab and vegetables) - complete pass. No flavor at all. -Katsu roll (panko chicken is the main ingredient)- this was the dude's choice for whatever reason. Imagine a chicken tender in a sushi roll. Noooo. -Spicy Tuna roll - the color of this tuna and mayo mash up was something I've never seen before. It tasted fine enough (although not spicy, however my tongue may have been injured by aforementioned harbanaro), but the color was off. It kind of creeped me out, to be honest. -Golden roll (smoked salmon, mango, crab meat, spicy sauce)- pretty good! The flavor of the fish really stood out and the mango is a nice touch. -Salmon Skin roll - crunchy, tasty. The ponzu sauce was nice. It's a tangy, citrus soy sauce that brightens the roll. So there you have it. Inyo's not bad. I think that's a back handed compliment. It's okay, but there are better places to spend your money. read more

The omakase here is phenomenal. Yes, you do need to call quite a bit ahead (think more than the 24+ hours advance notice the website states) to give the chef adequate time to prepare, and yes, the prices are a little steep at $100/person for 7 courses, but I can honestly stay it was the most delightful and surprising 4 hour culinary adventure I've had in the metro-Detroit area. It takes a certain amount of confidence in one's abilities for a chef to deviate from the traditional staples and offer omakase, as the phrase in Japanese means "whatever you want" or "to trust." It's used to showcase a chef's innovation in coming up with visually and gastronomically appealing dishes on a whim, and I was slightly skeptical at how much creativity a trendy little sushi lounge in the middle of Ferndale could offer. By the time our first course of chilled crab soup arrived, however, complete with a baked sesame "net" and from which a roasted baby soft shell crab (a very traditional Japanese snack) artistically dangled, all my fears were soothed. The next six courses were equally as palatable and meticulously presented.... to top it off, when Chef Kenny overheard us discussing Inyo's Dynamite roll that comes out on fire, the next course had SUPRISE: flames. As the entire experience takes so long, we were the last ones there well after Inyo's closing time, but we never felt compelled to eat faster or were rushed by any of the staff. If it was just for the omakase Inyo would be a solid five stars, but unfortunately both the regular items and the Sunday dim sum are too pricey for the amount/caliber of food received - especially considering the area's competition. Buuut, if you're ever looking for a reason to celebrate a special occasion and have a few hours to spare, Inyo's omakase is wonderful foray into the creativity of Chef Kenny and the best of what Japanese-fushion can offer. read more

We got our food and it was cold, average, and dressed up in pretension . I just discovered the secret to INYO, after one crazy-packed Friday night and two forty-five minute waits for a table ... Go here on Thursday! INYO offers three martinis for $3 each, the restaurant was quiet, and our food was quick. Having not eaten all day, we ordered an appetizer of jalepeno calimari AND a bunch of rolls. The calimari was prepared with fresh, big chunks of spinach, jalapeno, onion and bell peppers -- and the calimari wasn't fried long, so we could actually taste the consistency of the squid. We inhaled this one down to the very last bit of onion in about five minutes. Something I don't understand about INYO and Ronin -- they both have fallen into the trap of preparing some sushi pieces SO large that they can't fit in your mouth. This leads us to option a) nibble on roll, have roll fall apart on new dress, look stupid ... or b) try to shove entire piece in mouth, cover mouth with napkin, attempt to swallow while fighting for air, swallow too big of chunk and cough, look stupid. Why do this? Why? If someone could write back and explain the logic, I'd really appreciate it. Anyway, the sushi was well made -- chef Kenny rules, and this really is the best sushi in Ferndale (for what that's worth). The design & atmosphere, especially on a weekday, show some thought. Our server was perfect. One thing: the $3 lychee martinis come with a lychee inside. To quote my date, "Looks like a polyp is growing in there." Maybe re-think this? read more

EXCELLENT!!! Will recommend to everyone!! Tried the mango lobster and a few different sushi rolls - - volcano roll actually looks like a volcano :) A friend tried the Tsunami roll which he loved too! I couldn't even pass by the other booths without WOW-ING their plates! A couple of them even gave a thumbs-up! Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The prices are also reasonable. This is a beautiful restaurant, with a professional and attentive staff. The menu is interesting, but for the price I expected bigger portions. It is what it is, though: an upscale sushi restaurant in downtown Ferndale. It's across the street from Sakana, which I find to be much of the same. I think the thing that turned me off is the prices. I guess for the same price I would rather go to Cafe Sushi in Troy or Fishbone's downtown. If I wanted to impress someone with decor and fancy plating alone, though, Inyo would be the place. A funny thing about their fancy plating, actually, is that my friend and I ordered a roll with raw salmon in it. They put the roll on a lovely plate with a beautiful lily, which was served a top another lovely plate, which had a streak of fire along it. The fire from the bottom plate heated up the top plate and part of our sushi roll's salmon was cooked! I don't know if that was intentional, but I did not want cooked salmon - I ordered it raw for a reason! :) read more

Decided to give this place a shot and purchased a Groupon. I tried the Philly Roll, and the Spicy Tuna as an appetizer. Half of the Philly roll had an average amount of fish, the other half contained nearly none. Based on my limited experience with their sushi I would not recommend this place, Noble Fish is cheaper and much better. For my entree I ordered General Tao's Chicken which came out cold, and brown rice which came out about five minutes after my entree. You can get better General Tao's at Panda Express and save yourself $15, check out Peking House in Royal Oak if you like General Tao's. They need to focus less on being flashy and more on the food. The presentation of the food writes a check that the taste can't cash. read more

My wife and I decided to finally try the restaurant we had been driving by for years. We went in and were surprised by the size....its looks smaller from outside. We were also surprised by how busy it was at 7pm on a Tuesday! We sat and were assisted by a bubbly waitress who was eager to make sure we had a great experience. (Thank you to Grace/Linae) The food ordered was Gyzo Dumplings (spelling?) for an appetizer with the dipping sauce that was not spicy(The spicy was too hot for us). It was amazingly delicious. My wife ordered the Teriyaki Chicken, and I the General Tao chicken, both were wonderful both in their presentation and taste! (see the pics) The fired rice was a side and was absolutely delicious as well. For dessert, a lemoncello flute....awesome flavor. Add a few drinks and it was a tad pricey at $85 for the bill but worth the wonderful date night with my wonderful wife. read more

I can only give Inyo 2 stars on principle - it was so overpriced. That being said, the food and drinks were good, service was fine. We were meeting a group of 8 people, and my husband and I eat sushi all the time, in many different states. This was one of the most expensive sushi places I have ever been to. Some items (Nigiri, certain rolls) were about double what I normally pay. My husband and actually left hungry because we didn't want to end up with a $100 bill for 2 people. And not only expensive, but the rolls were average size at best, and one was really small. And there are no extras like you get at some places (miso soup or salad). I just think there are too many great sushi places in the metro area to pay extra for a trendy venue and food display. I won't ever go back again unless they lower their prices quite a bit. read more

Great new addition to Ferndale. The drink menu has fun drinks/martini's and the ambiance is lounge-y. I would recommend getting a booth in the back (needed reservations to get) because the tables at the front are very small and the dishes are huge and don't fit very well. The food was good, beautiful presentation. The dragon roll (i think) came out on fire! The service was slow but I think it should pick up once they have more experience since it's only a few weeks old. read more

We were highly recommended to try this place, walked in the back door , pretty dark ... but hostess was polite, our waiters name was Jack, we was very polite ,but didn't know Jack about the menu...we ordered a couple rolls.. Inyo and Inyo 2.0 , $16 each was way too pricey for a bland tasting non filling roll... we then tried the hot Stone Bowl with Shrimp, when it showed up sizzling I thought, OK this will be great , we'll surprise surprise... it wasn't, small shrimp, bits of veggies, over powered with rice ... no substance at all, when he finally found silverware, we started mixing it like he told us to do, and it was like a bowl of mush..I don't think this place will be around long, the waiter should have been able too at least know what the food was on the menu and what to pair it with, he couldn't even recommend anything as he hadn't eaten much of anything on the menu. Yay love this sushi place! They have the most exciting rolls anywhere! The Dynamite roll comes out on fire! The decor has a very Asian feel. The high booths are great for a romantic date...the only thing is that would be sitting far away from your date because the booths are so big. The quality and creativity of the sushi is by far one of the best in the area. The place is usually not that busy during the week, but watch out for the weekend! We waited a good 30 minutes on a Saturday night. Inyo gets crowed because it is right next door to boogie fever, and many other bars/night clubs. It is a fun area for a great night out. Inyo is a bit pricey though...there specialty rolls range from $10-$17. I get they are "specialty" rolls, but come on.. you are still only getting 6-8 pieces of sushi in them. I guess we are paying for the artistry of it all. It would be easy to spend $50 for a couple there. Drinks were good too...I drink Vodka and water with a lime. I asked just for well voda, and the server only charged me for a shot of vodka so my drinks were only $2.50 a piece. I thought that was simply amazing! All in all if you love and crave sushi, hit this place up! You definitely won't be disappointed. You will most likely want to go back over and over again. read more

As much as I really want to like Inyo...I just can't get into it. I've tried it twice now, and both times have left me disappointed. Yes, everything is really pretty but the taste just doesn't measure up. It always feels like something is missing. I have gotten a few different rolls each time and there is nothing that stands out to me. I like Ronin way better, especially at this price point. I did have a soft shell crab appetizer that was pretty good, but nothing too exciting. I don't even like their drinks either, they are way too sweet and unbalanced. My boyfriend tells me their spicy tuna salad is really good, but I think I am going to just take his word for it and forget about Inyo for myself. Sorry Inyo! In the past, I have come here with girlfriends and not been impressed with prices and getting incorrectly charged for the wrong menu items. Recently however, I came back with the same girlfriend for happy hour, and it was a much better experience. If you sit at the bar, the bar tender will treat you to his fire show if you ask :) We really love the plum wine which comes with a real plum, which is on the regular menu, but still only $4. No soup or salad with your sushi, I think everything is Ala Carte...ordered a 'fried roll' with spicy tuna..bland tasting and wasn't fried, as expected. More like coated in maybe a Panko crust that may have been fried? Not good. Returned after one bite and went with the scorpion roll which is usually pretty good. The scorpion did have good flavor but, it would be nice to have meatier pieces of crab in there instead of the thin legs mostly made up of shell.
