Sushi Bon It's a place you can drive by 100 times without noticing it. It's a tiny, carry out only location, and it's in a strip mall. I'm not sure what caught my eye this time, but I'm glad it did. The first thing you notice is the attention to detail in the front of the lobby. They could have been strictly utilitarian, without much in the way of decoration. Or, it could have been a cluttered mess of disconnected themes. Instead, what you see is placed with care. There is a giant TV screen showing beautiful coastal scenes. It's relaxing, and lifts your mood after fighting traffic on 12 Mile Road. It looks like care was taken with the knickknacks and pictures you see here, too. Everything feels just right. By the time I wrote the previous paragraph, my food was ready. Seriously, it took about five minutes. If you look at the pictures, it doesn't look like it was thrown together, but rather assembled carefully. While the ambience is nice, what really matters is the flavor of the food. And, this is where this humble little place excels. The salmon in my salmon roll was beautifully fresh, and I was given a significant amount. They were eight hearty rolls for $11. The shrimp rolls were a little over half the price, and tasty, though I prefer raw ingredients in my sushi. And, the rice was freshly made, and prepared perfectly. And, they even have a license to sell beer and wine. There are Japanese beers, but also other styles available. Everything at Sushi Bon feels just right. read more

We go here about once every 2 weeks because we live very close by and every time we get it it's just as good if not better. Not a lot of main entree items on the menu, was wanting some salmon teriyaki, but none available. I might be getting another roll or two. It's good their main focus is all about their sushi then. They first only brought out 2 of the SR29 and we had a bit of a wait despite explaining to the waitress that the meant we wanted 3 total of the SR29. Took another 7 minutes to get the other 2 rolls since other table orders had to be filled too. The SR29 special rolls were good and perfectly done and even looked good too. Interesting mix of options. When you first arrive, you're directed to have a seat at the table, where are you'll find a menu with their various offerings. In the spirit of a traditional Japanese restaurant everything is ordered phone number. We went with a varied platter including some raw and some non-raw items. I chuckled a little when I saw they offered teriyaki chicken rolls, and had to try one. I thought it was OK, but nothing spectacular. The eel nigiri was good, as it usually is. The tuna rolls that we ordered were also quite good. There was only one server covering the entire room, but she was hustling and doing a very good job. The two sushi chefs were both working very hard, and keeping up with everybody's orders. We didn't wait terribly long for our platter to be brought out. Ice water and hot tea or both self serve and you can have as much as you like of each. The overall quality of the food is reflective of the price, average. This sushi restaurant was different form many restaurants. It was mainly because of the atmosphere and vibe here. It was really quiet. The music was really low and all of the guests were talking so calmly. The restaurant was also self service in certain ways like for water or tea refills. The food here was amazing, and it was really filling! I started off with the shrimp tempura off of the appetizer (deep fried) section. It came with tempura sauce, but I did not use the tempura sauce. The shrimp was unlike I have had before. It was crispy, it was perfectly cooked. The breading was light and crunchy. It is something I would definitely recommend. I am a fan of their "special roll" section on the menu. I ordered the mango Chicago, the futomaki, and the yum yum; this is also the order that I liked most. The potato crunch on the mango Chicago was a nice compliment to the mango, cucumber, and crab. The crab, egg, and pickled radish mixture in the futomaki was something that I have not had before. The salmon and tuna mixture in the yum yum was filling. The hospitality here was exceptional. On the menu cover, it states "tip is not required; please do not leave cash tips on the table; but if you put it in the tip jar, very appreciated." This was shocking to me because I had a lower expectation of the type of service I would receive; however, it was the absolute opposite. I believe they went above and beyond. The gentleman at the register thanked me at least three times after leaving a tip and was truly grateful when I told him the food and service was amazing. Ok, I'll have to admit. When I first tried sushi bon, I didn't love it. I was a frequenter of Naruto Sushi and over there, you get soup or salad with your sushi. Here, nada, it's all extra. I eventually learned to love this place. My favorite section is the deep fried sushi. It's sooo creamy, fat and delicious. And the price, couldn't get better. Absolutely loved this place on my first visit. I really enjoyed that the service style is self-serve similar to traditional Japanese and Chinese culture where eating solo is normalized. You order on a piece of paper and all you need is at your table (menu, utensils, etc). You get your drinks yourself. The sushi itself was a good price and good quality, tasted fresh. I see why this place has such high reviews...but definitely not my type of place. Most the sushi items are cooked and catered to less authentic and risk averse palates here. I came to this place when it first opened, and they had kitchen offerings such as bulgogi and other Korean staples, but now it's sushi only. When I was looking at the menu, so many ingredients are recycled and rearranged among the rolls, I didn't really know if I was ordering anything different. Sushi here is always delicious! The rolls are fresh and full of flavor, and the options seem endless. No complaints for the sushi. And you can't go wrong with the miso soup. Checking in today, our server mentioned they recently started a new menu. The menu has many more options then it used to; ranging from appetizers to Udon or ramen. Me and my love decided to try both the ramen and udon! Unfortunately; this is where we went wrong. Both were terrible. The udon lacked flavor ENTIRELY and was basically like eating noodles in water. The ramen had a spoiled egg in it and smelled like other ingredients were expired as well. This was extremely disappointing. I understand a new menu comes with a learning curve, but something shouldn't be added to the menu if it's gonna taste THAT BAD. My advice if you come here would be to stick with sushi, and give it a few months to try the rest of their menu. Hopefully it will improve by then. read more

Tuesday afternoon, I was driving on 12 Mile Road almost to the corner of Mound when I spotted Sushi Bon's sign. "How did I miss a sushi place in Warren????" I quickly made a turnaround, park my car in front of the restaurant and went in. I was greeted by two people who kindly told me that they are still not open but will be, come Thursday. Fast forward two days later and I found myself in the same parking lot, coming in to Sushi Bon for their opening day. Simple, minimalist and cozy would be words to describe the interior. The walls are decorated simply by 5" x 7" framed photographs that I later found out were the works of the owner's wife. A wonderful lady with a kind smile seated me in a table in the far corner of the restaurant (my choice) in a table I would be calling dibs from now on every time I eat there. I was immediately greeted by my server, David, menu in hand. After about 5 minutes of perusing through a menu that has just enough selection to satisfy any sushi fanatic, I decided to try their Red Dragon Roll but quickly changed my mind to just the plain Dragon Roll (both are shrimp tempura rolls with spicy salmon for the former and crab for the latter). I thought it might be a little costly at $11.99 but what the heck. I was hungry from skipping lunch and I want to treat myself to sushi. I also ordered 3 shrimp tempura rolls (6 pieces each order for a really reasonable $4.99 each order). Did I mention I was hungry? :) While I was waiting for my order, David brought me a hand roll (the flavor of which, I later found out was off the menu) and told me it was compliments of the chef! What a lovely gesture! That would have been enough for me to give this place a 5-star rating (so now you know I can be bribed when I'm hungry! lol) but when I bit into it, the roll was scrumptious! It turns out that this was the PREFECT prologue to the rest of my meal that came about 10 minutes after I finished my hand roll. I would note here that the Dragon Roll was HUGE -- probably the equivalent of two, maybe three sushi! Good thing I was hungry! :) Size aside, both my orders were delicious and yes, something to write to YELP! about! Ladies and gentlemen of the YELP! world. I have a few co-workers that do not like this restaurant and I cannot understand why. It is very clean, we always have friendly service, I love the variety of rolls and they are always very good. They even change it up once in a while adding new rolls and I like that they have a picture of every roll on their menu. I really like sushi and I am glad to have such a good place in Warren. Join me for a quick late lunch... Let's meet @ Sushi Bon right at 5... I tried to meet you earlier but it was closed for "break" Hey what a great greeting they give us! So nice-- super quick service and pleasant folks ready to help us get in and out speedily. We order shrimp shumai, seaweed salad, two chirashis (which come with miso and salad) and a couple scallop nigiri. Tea and water are brought to the table right away. Let's spend a minute talking about the décor. What's your guess for what the space used to be? A candy store? Mexican restaurant? Pizza joint? We ask when the server comes by with some food. Lebanese restaurant. Ahhhh that makes some sense. Despite some bamboo and laminate flooring, there is an odd feel to the place. It still has some warmth and it isn't uncomfortable... just a little odd. Alright, let's dig in--- Shumai look good. Alas, they are not. Not at all. They are quite bad in fact. The dough is sadly undercooked and seemed like it was old from being frozen for quite some time. No amount of dipping can save it. I can't even finish it. On to the seaweed salad: looks fine. Actually it has decent taste. Wait. What is that?? Oil? It's dripping in oil. It's soaked through. This is truly heavy and unpleasant. Can't finish this either. Yuck. Have some tea. It's pretty innocuous. Try some miso. That has no taste either. At least it's not salty. The ginger dressing (heaped generously on top) tastes decent actually. Way too much, but good! More tea? Water? That'll help! Ok here is the chirashi. The service here is fast. And again, super friendly. This is good. Fingers crossed for good fish. Why is there nori in the chirashi bowl? I've never in all my years eating sushi seen dried seaweed sheets in a chirashi bowl. And crab salad? Hmmm ok. Perhaps some people use this as a maki-making kit. Just grab some seaweed, crab salad (it's so bad, btw!) rice and a huge piece of fish and go to town! Well, let's just taste the large cuts of fish and see where we end up-- eccch decent. Not terribly fresh, but nothing is bad. Our scallops are inoffensive. Neutral. I am waffling between two and three stars. When asked a second time how everything was, I indicate there are issues and my server doesn't probe further. Please do so the next time, folks. Or, don't ask the question. :) I'm erring on skeptical and going with 2 stars since it is unlikely I will visit again anytime soon. I feel kind of bad giving this place a less than stellar review, but I have to be honest. I've had better. I decided to try this place with my girlfriend today. The decor was nice, and most of the stuff came from IKEA. I could tell because I have the same things at home. Anyways we ordered a few rolls and the bugolgi. The bugolgi did not come with any side dishes, yet costs about the same as places that include it ($12). There also was not much of a portion, and not much meat. Emart serves this dish way better at 4$ less, and includes sides. But it wasn't bad, just not as good as emart. I was expecting the sushi to be great because of the reviews, but I wad let down. First of all, there was way too much rice (did I order a rice roll?), and it was too tightly packed. Not saying it should fall apart, but it shouldnt be so dense. And not much fish or veggies inside. The roll was only large because of the rice. Also, I ordered the spicy salmon roll, but I got the spicy smoked salmon roll instead. Did they think I wouldn't be able to tell? Crazy sushi the only other sushi place in the warren area (2.5 miles east) is much better. This place isn't bad, it's just not as good as the other choices out there. I wouldn't come back, but try for yourself, and then try the other 2 places I mentioned. You might be inclined to agree. read more

Sushi Bon is one of the first sushi places I tried after moving into the area from Washington D.C. I have to say, I wasn't too impressed with the food, but it wasn't bad. The rolls were small considering the price and some of it was falling apart when I was picking it up. The staff was friendly and it was a nice atmosphere but not my top pick of sushi places to go. It's decent for being close to where I work, but I have a favorite place by where I live now that I think is overall a better choice. read more

Great sushi for the value, and top notch service! I came here with, and on the advice of, Ruffy L. and I was not disappointed. Regular rolls (of good size) run about $5, and specialty rolls (huge!) are closer to $10. Overall, I left absolutely stuffed to the gills with sushi for less than $30. Good sushi, too! The sushi chef and waitress are friendly as can be, they know Ruffy from his handful of visits, and we were greeted like family. The sushi came fast and beautifully presented, and at the end of the meal we were given a complimentary dessert of an orange, artfully presented. (see pic) Downfalls would be the location, it's in nondescript shopping center by 12 & Mound, and the decor is pretty "meh". I should have seen this as a red flag but I thought I would give it a try.. I told her no I would pay when I pickup. The salmon was not fresh and so thin I could barely taste it. I ordered take-out from here last night. The guy I talked to on the phone to place my order was very upbeat, and friendly. I ordered a few different rolls so that I could report back on them. I had a Fried Shrimp Roll and didn't realize that their tempura is the kind that is a lot like panko bread crumbs. Just not my favorite presence. I had the Dragon Roll and loved it. I'm a dragon roll fan, and this one was great. I also had the Sushi Bon Roll, and that one is appropriately named. It was delicious! 2nd time eating here. Had to come back after a 12 person dinner for my bf (our first time here) and someone ordered the spider roll. It was the largest spider roll we had ever seen. Our dinner party then was a success and everyone loved it. Today we ordered the Hawaiian roll (minus cucumber)- one of my fave rolls. It was refreshing and light. The tuna was fresh and delicious. Save a bite for the last bite, you'll thank me later! The spider roll, though good, was out shadowed by the Sushi Bon Roll! A must try! It will be everyone's fave too. The crunch spicy mayo/hot sauce topping was sooooo good! Atmosphere was nice, decor was warm and inviting. Liked the many booths, and the screens to separate tables. Love the lantern lights. Don't be fooled by the location/ exterior. There is GOLD in here. The pieces of nigiri are large, the fish is fresh and high quality, and it's cut really well! A lot of the rolls are pretty Americanized, but they are SO GOOD. The Detroit roll is a must! The thing that really sets this place apart is the service. The waitstaff here is always next level amazing. Incredibly sweet and helpful. Went to dinner with a friend yesterday and we heard the waitress tell the sushi chef that the plate looked beautiful (it did). It was so friggin wholesome and heartwarming. You can tell everyone there truly loves what they do and it creates a wonderful atmosphere and great food! read more
