The close friends of the Bulgogi, plus lettuce with wonderful sesame dressing.
    Rob P.

A friend told me Chung Ki Wa has the best Korean food in the area. I'm always up for important research like this, so off we went. The bulgogi was delivered with vegetables, including kimchi and garlic cloves, in separate containers. I didn't realize at first that you can ask for more at any time. The beef and onions were placed on a hot plate by the server. I envisioned a performance like a Japanese steakhouse, but no. Chung Ki Wa is not about putting on a show, but rather about delivering delicious food. Along with the vegetables, you also get a bowl of lettuce and some wonderfully robust sesame dressing. Additionally, you can request lettuce leaves to fill with that delicious steak, veggies, and perfectly prepared rice. Everything about the bulgogi was so amazing that I almost wished I ordered it, but I was extremely happy with the bibimbap. I love how the rice gets crispy and sticks to the hot ceramic bowl, and that was certainly the case here. The beef and vegetables play perfectly with the rice. And, the wonderful thing about serving in a hot bowl is that the food never gets cold. As the band Hansen very nearly said, "bibimbap I love you". My only very minor gripe was that I didn't get to hear the rice sizzling. The price here are more than you will probably want to spend on lunch, but put that out of your head for a moment. This is enough food for lunch, dinner, and maybe the next day's lunch. There was never a problem flagging somebody down for something; it's more of a team effort here than one person being assigned a table. I have to say that my friend was right. This is the best Korean food in the area, and some of the best Korean food I've ever had.

Here's what you need to know: as Metro Detroit slowly sees more Korean restaurants pop up (like Daebak and Soora), Chung Ki Wa stands out as a longstanding, Korean-owned staple that goes back to the basics, and does them really well. Tucked in a humble strip mall next to an array of ethnic stores and a Kung Fu Tea, the exterior is unassuming, but the inside reveals a surprisingly spacious dining area with grill-in-table seating and two side rooms for extra space. We came in around 6:30pm on a Thursday and were seated right away - half-full, cozy, and no-frills in the best way. The menu here is extensive. You'll find Korean comfort food classics (Bibimbap, Bulgogi), warming stews (individual and shareable), Korean-Chinese fusion (like Jjajangmyeon), and more adventurous options like Yook Hwoe (beef tartare) and Soondae (blood sausage). We opted for two orders of the Yangnyeom Galbi ($35.95 each)--well-marinated, tender short rib that came pre-cut and pre-cooked at our request (they're happy to cook it at the table for you, too). Served over onions, the meat was flavorful and high quality, though not a huge portion. The Tang Su Yuk (sweet and sour pork, $16.95) was a hit: crunchy on the outside, moist inside, and coated in an addictive sweet glaze. Kimchi Jeon ($12.95) was massive, crispy, and well-stuffed with kimchi and veg, served in big, pre-cut slices. The Gyeran Jjim (steamed egg, $3.95) was a standout: piping hot, fluffy, and cloudlike - easily one of the best I've had. I also tried the Gamjatang ($14.95), a spicy pork bone soup with cabbage and a few chunks of potato. It had a hearty, peppery broth and decent bone-to-meat ratio, though I wish there were more potatoes - but for the price, it's hard to beat. All meals came with personal bowls of steamed rice, and the banchan selection was generous and solid: crunchy kimchi, spicy cucumbers, fish cakes, bean sprouts, spinach, and a simple soy-dressed salad. You can always tell the quality of a Korean place by their banchan, and Chung Ki Wa delivers. In short: this spot checks all the boxes. Great service, approachable prices, and a homey feel. It's not trying to be trendy - it's just solid, delicious Korean food done right. If you're looking for a go-to Korean restaurant in the area, this is it.

Atmosphere is somewhat mid but every dish is very tasty and the prices are very good! My go to place for good Korean food!

What a hidden gem--so glad my friend recommended this place. Great service, very attentive staff. The food was excellent and plentiful, also loved the (complimentary) banchan: fish cakes, kimchi, marinated cucumbers, cabbage salad, green dish (mustard greens?--forgot to ask). I really loved the cucumbers and cabbage salad! Kimchi was a little fishy for my taste. Since I've never been my friend decided to order a ton of different foods, so I could try a lot of different things, and she could have leftovers. I started with the Gun Man Doo (dumplings) and Seaweed Salad. The dumplings were delicious, really liked the sauce that comes w it too! The seaweed salad was too fishy for my taste--maybe too much fish sauce? My friend ordered the Gyeran Jjim (Steamed Eggs), which is like a fluffy mound of scrambled eggs. Yum! She ordered Galbi (marinated beef short ribs)--that flavor!!--and Budae Jeongol (soup w a variety of meats in it) which was way too spicy for me. I'm a wimp! And I ordered the seafood bibimbap and LOVED it. You get tiny shrimp, scallops, mussels, and octopus in every bite, and the flavors were subtle and delicious. Perfect dish for a freezing cold night! Just be sure to stir the rice after they set the pot down, so it doesn't burn on the bottom! We were stuffed by the end of the meal, and my friend had lots of leftovers to take home! Would definitely recommend and will definitely go back!! My friend also order

I went with my family, we were a group of six. Three adults and three children. We ordered the Combo platter "C" It was excellent. Our server cooked at for us at our table. We had so much food, we could have easily fed three more adults. We ordered hot Saki to go with the meal and some hot tea. The two boys aged 8 and 6 years old loved watching our food being cooked at the table. The boys love steak and they ate plenty of it. They also loved the dipping sauces. There is a video monitor showing other foods being prepared in the kitchen which the boys found very entertaining. We also had a delicious salad to complement our meal. The kimchi was excellent and we took home lots of leftover steak and shrimp. We just couldn't eat all of it. We will definitely enjoy the leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

I had the dolsot bibimbap with chicken and it was good. The piping hot stone bowl kept my food hot for the entire meal but more importantly it made the rice that was in contact with the bowl a bit crispy. I will say although the service was prompt and professional, it wasn't very warm. Our waitperson was a bit cold.

The food is amazing; absolutely wonderful and I love the Korean tea! This is all comfort foods for me since my mother was full Korean! I highly recommend this place

I loved this restaurant! They did miss a couple items on a longer order but totally understandable. I loved that we got all the side dishes even though we didn't do the kbbq option. The kimchi fried rice was on the spicier end but delicious (and reheats well). The steamed egg was also delicious. We got Tteok-bokki and asked for it mild and it was actually very mild (one of our party members could not do spicy). Overall, I would come back!

I have been eating at this place for many years now, one time for my Birthday and it has consistently been excellent! They used to offer lettuce wraps with the Banchan or purple rice, but not in recent years. The steam Egg was good, my family usually orders their Cha gui, Samkyupsal, and Galbi Tang, which are all very delicious btw with consistency in the flavor when we go back to eat here. The Banchan was always nice and fresh when we eat there. Service was good where they even offer to cook the food for you, and you do not have to wait too long to get your food. One of the Korean places I highly recommend in Michigan!

I have reviewed this place many times and thought about my review many times, lol, and have come to the conclusion it is a solid 3-3.5/5. Each dish I've gotten has an authentic Korean taste. The price is a little on the high side, but worth the price point. They have many soups/stew options but all are good and soul warming and they are all unique. The stir fry dishes are savory and not overly savory. I have not tried the big soups (that are 40+$ or the bbq but i'm sure they are great) The noodle dishes have a nice sauce and again not too salty and pretty filling. --- Here are the problems. Minus 1 for the service. This they have lots of room for improvement. There is a lady who is older who seems like she doesn't want to serve you. Also After getting your older she is no where to be found. You literally have to find her and ask for something as simple as napkins. There other waiters are not that much better. They seem annoyed at questions and are never to be found again. They never come back to ask if you want more bonchon. And if you want more bonchon after the meal they said it is considered takeout...but that is because I was not able to ask for it during the meal. They try to conserve money on the materials such as bonchon, utensils, and it shows. It gives a bad taste to the overall vibe. Overall we will be back for food but honestly this is a restaurant where I think 15-or-sub-15% tip is justified.

After such an amazing visit from my last time I was in the Metro Detroit Area a year ago, I decided to revisit again for KBBQ. Unfortunately, this time it wasn't as good anymore, seems to be a change in ownership recently. Combo B: The meat quality wasn't as good as before, and had bland marinate. Also was misleading that the combo was supposed to have a different meat (brisket, as stated on the menu) but then we noticed there was chicken instead. We expressed our concern and was told that was how the combo came as (which should've been reflected on the new menu). Spicy Squid: Seems like more veggies than actual squid. It was alright but wasn't as good as before. The sides were for the most part mediocre quality (aside from the steamed egg and salad). It saddens me to write a low review as I normally wouldn't write this low of a rating but had to express how this was a super disappointing experience. Please update the menu if there are new changes as I found it misleading to replace certain stuff in the combos without informing the customer.

Combo C with shrimp switched out for samgyupsal

Must try if you're a Korean food (especially kbbq) lover! Out of the many Korean restaurants I've been to around the metro detroit area, this is easily one of my top picks. Loved all of their banchan and service was excellent. We came in around 830pm and ended up staying a little past 10 to finish our food (grilling all the meat took some time), which is their close time. We felt so bad but they were so friendly and understanding about it. Ordered combo C with 2 orders of the dinner special: galbi + soondubu and galbi + naengmyun. We also switched out the shrimp from combo c for samgyupsal. This was a very generous amount for a party of 6. Their galbi marinade was on point and their salad perfectly balanced out the grease - we got so many extra orders of it bc it was so good! Another plus is that they have a spacious parking lot so parking will most likely not be a problem at all.

Can we order a Combo A even if we have more than 2 people? Just hoping to give the meats a try :)

Can a Vegan diet be accommodated, what recommendations would you make?

There is a kimchi soup that is vegan, as well Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap can be ordered with tofu or just vegetables. There may be others that you can order vegan, but those two come to mind. Also, the side dishes other than fish cakes should all be vegan.
