The platter of meat was loaded with whole pork belly (GF), thinly sliced pork belly (GF), spicy pork shoulder, beef bulgogi (GF), beef prime sirloin steak (GF), marinated short rib slices (GF) and soy marinated chicken. It was served with rice, side dishes, salad, steamed egg and small spicy soybean soup. Everything was so delicious. This restaurant really lives up to its name. The service was quick and efficient and although the place wasn't packed because we came early, it started to fill up by the time we were ready to leave. Mind you, this was a Tuesday. I'm going to start with the bad... we are only 3 people, black snd gratuity of 20% was already added to the check. Given the lackluster service, I never anticipated giving them any more than 15%. On the menu, in 8 pt text it states, all parties MAY BE subject to a 20% gratuity. So.. this restaurant chooses to whom they think will not tip. I'd like to make it crystal clear that unless a party of 6 or more where maybe more work at a table is required, a tip is voluntary & complementary. A guest is only entitled and legally responsible for their bill. We were seated quickly and handed menus. The wait for service was about 20mins. We ordered and the food came out quickly. Sadly, not given utensils. Not greeted. No run over. Imagine fast food on speed with our initial hi, what can I get you. Luckily, I know how the restaurant works so I explained to the table. The dining room had about 5 occupied tables & 3 servers. We weren't checked on voluntarily ever but we did use the call button for obvious needs... rice, utensils, more sauce.. etc. Things started moving fast for other tables once the women came on the clock although they weren't assigned to our table. We asked for sugar for the tea and they not the cafe had sugar. Nor bottled water for purchase. We left with our bellies full and that's all that matters. My friends and I were able to secure a table for 6 this past Monday for dinner. We only had to wait about 30 minutes via walk-in, but I would highly recommend making reservations in advance if you know you'll be dining here. We initially came here with the intention to drink, but we ended up eating instead. They gave us two sets of banchan and there was plenty of options like pickled radish, kimchi, macaroni salad, and spring mix. However, the banchan was not worth writing home about and was at best just OK. Between five people, we shared a couple KBBQ platters (each order came with a steamed egg and soybean paste soup -- I didn't try the soup but the steamed egg was alright and not very fluffy): A3. BEEF COMBO (FOR 2) - 69 * Thinly sliced brisket - Obviously, we started with the thinnest cut first. This was a pretty good start, the meat had a good balance of meat and fat, and overall the texture and flavor was good. * Short ribs - Tender and delicious, went well with the sesame oil with salt (this could use more salt in it). I only had a bite of it since each order comes with four small strips and there were five of us. * Prime ribeye steak - Pretty disappointing because it wasn't very flavorful and the cut was pretty tough. * Marinated short rib slices - This was probably most people's favorite cut that we tried. The marinade was lightly sweet and the meat was tender. A6. SIGNATURE COMBO (FOR 2) - 69 * Prime ribeye steak - Similar thoughts from above. * Pork belly - I didn't try this because I'm not a huge pork belly fan, but my friends seemed to all enjoy it. * Pork shoulder steak - Meat quality was OK and it was on the tougher side than it was tender. In general, I don't really like pork for KBBQ, so i might be biased. * Marinated short rib slices - Again, similar thoughts from above. Quite delicious. The food overall was OK -- some cuts of meat were much better than others, but some fell short in terms of quality and flavor. My daughter and I had a fun and fulfilling experience at Daebak Korean Barbeque. We decided to have indulgent Mommy & Me feast. She a carnivore and love barbeques of all nationalities. She also loves to cook, therefore loved the idea of cooking at the table ourselves. We ordered a scallion pancake, which is huge and too much for two people. She chose the Signature Combo for 2. The ribeye and pork belly were the standouts for me. The raw platters come with various sides such as salad, rice, steamed egg, soup and spinach. Wow I've never seen anything as bad as the food here. Serious disbelief. I ordered Daenjangjjigae to gauge measure of the kitchen. It should be rich and thick with dark daenjang chock full of beans that melt into soup. Making it stew. Big chunks of zucchini, onions, whatever stew stuff, tofu, and pork. Pork is traditional, and the pork flavor is very distinct. This is down-home comfort stew, everyday stew, a staple. So it should be a MEAL. What I got was Daenjang-water. It was so thin it was barely broth. But it was hot and it was a cold day, so I just thought of it as eating Gukbap (rice in soup). There were a few little pieces of firm tofu and half a handful of thinly sliced onions and zuchinni. I had to order an extra Bap bc the serving was too small, and then ...omg....they brought a bowl of rice that had been sitting out so long, it was hard around the edge. Like a centimeter's width around the bowl was HARD. Like too hard for my teeth hard. They served me that. We got to try so many dishes that had been on my list, like japchae and kimchi pajeon, and they did not disappoint. The flavors were authentic and perfectly balanced. The kimchi and side dishes were especially amazing, offering a true taste of Korean cuisine. Daebak had a good selection of meat. We opted for some of the unseasoned beef cuts like the Cote Sal and the Chadol. I also ordered the lettuce to make some wraps with the beef. The corn cheese was not very cheesy. I don't know if it just wasn't melted enough. It did taste a little sweet. It had peas and carrots as well. I had the Naengmyun as well. I enjoyed the noodles and the broth, but the beef in it was really dry and flavorless. I liked the vent was close to the table, so the restaurant was very well ventilated. I really enjoyed the old Seoul Garden that used to be here so I was happy to see this open in the spot of a classic. I honestly really love the food here. They have a lot of nice options to choose from and their meats/flavors are good. Their side dishes are good and the wings in the soy garlic slap!!! Could've been better (Yelp's 2/5 description) is on point. Food: got the marinated steak combo ($60). While known for 'high quality' meat, meat was not that. multiple pieces of steak not chewable. Tough (despite being cooked to less than well done quality). Also got the Kimchi Jiggae - odd flavor. I've never had something so sweet yet sour/spicy at the same time. Not pleasant. I also go the Sundubu Jjigae which was really nothing special and did not surpass other Korean restaurants like Chung Ki Wa/Soora. This place's specialty was KBBQ, and it was VERY sub-par. Service: Terrible. The bell to alert the server did not make the server come over. We were told we could only dine for one hour because of a reservation one hour later. At the one hour mark, there were plenty of tables, and this left a distaste for the restaurant when they said that. Could not get the hot plate changed for the longest time. My sister and I went to Daebak Korean Barbecue after our other plans fell through. We didn't have a reservation, but they seated us in their private room, which had a long table with other diners who also didn't have reservations. Odd set up, but it was fine. We found the menu confusing, so we asked the server how it worked. There are combination meals and a la cart dishes. Upon his advice, we ordered the marinated combo for 2. Because nothing's cooked, the service is very fast. They brought everything right away. The server started the grill for us with an onion and a pat of butter. Neither one of us likes spicy food, and my sister is allergic to pepper, which we told the server. But apparently, the side dishes are standard, so some of them didn't work for us. I was able to eat the peppery potato sticks but some of the other things -- including the soup -- were too spicy for both of us. The steamed egg appetizer was weird, but I put it on the grill, which made it palatable. The side dishes were all very small, and other than onions and mushrooms, there were no vegetables meant for grilling. But the real problem was two-fold: All of the chicken was thigh meat, which was fine for me, but for people like my sister who don't like dark meat, it was a huge disappointment. The second and bigger issue was that much of the meat was full of gristle, rendering it inedible. Additionally, when they brought out the meat, they did not point out which was which, except to mention that the chicken takes the longest to cook -- so we were advised to cook it last! That didn't make any sense to us, so we cooked it first. At $60, it was not cheap. We both decided that K-Pot is a much better deal, as it's all you can eat. They also offer a bigger variety, the menu is easier to understand, the servers are more helpful and the food was of a of higher quality. read more

This was my first time at a Korean bbq so it was a learning curve involved. My sister and I split the signature combo and also the corn cheese as an appetizer and an extra steamed egg. We had plenty of food to split and a lot of meat, definitely had to take a plate home. Food was very tasty and you have plenty of sauces and topping to build several flavor profiles. Service was okay, they were pretty busy so they had to squeeze us into the back next to a bigger party and the music kept cutting in and out and they had to come fix it numerous times. We didn't know that you get a buzzer to get your server to come nor did he tell us so we were stuck flagging down random servers for assistance. We went as a family to celebrate our recently passed father. When we arrived the restaurant was loud and chaotic. it took quite some time to be seated. After 15 minutes of no waiter attending to us I went to the front. To ask for assistance. Instead the woman who I assume was a blond female floor manager of some sort gave me attitude, implying that somehow it was our fault that we had been ignored. Maybe she was having a bad day? But we all found her attitude unprofessional and off putting. Aside from that we had a very nice meal. The Food was well prepared and very tasty. I would recommend. But be aware that this is a very loud restaurant and people with hearing difficulties will find it challenging to hold conversation. No matter, they will be enjoying their food instead. Having had some amazing KBBQ in L.A., Northern Virginia, and Korea itself, I have a pretty good idea of what constitutes a "good" Korean BBQ restaurant. I have to say, I didn't come in with extremely high expectations for KBBQ in the Detroit metropolitan area, but I was pleasantly surprised by Daebak! We made a reservation for 8 people on a Thursday night at around 5:30pm, and the restaurant was fairly empty (but it was early on a weekday night, so that makes sense). The location is in a Korean-themed building (Seoul Plaza) with other Korean stores and a dessert place, and the space inside is bright and spacious, with grill-it-yourself tables as well as regular tables for those who just want pre-cooked entrees. They brought out free banchan (Korean side dishes) as well as six metal bowls of rice (which turned out to be plenty). The banchan was solid if not stellar - the kimchi tasted fresh and crunchy, the pickled veg had a nice brine, the spinach in sesame oil was decent, and the pasta salad was overly mayo-y, but was brightened up by the addition of fresh apples. They also provided a nice bowl of salad tossed in a spicy soy-sauce based vinaigrette, which complemented the rich meats nicely. As I'm gluten-sensitive, I let our server know, and they did a wonderful job of keeping me updated on all items containing gluten. Additionally, a lot of KBBQ places short you on the banchan by only giving you a little bit in the beginning, and you have to ask for more (sometimes at an additional price), but our server brought out large enough portions that we didn't need any refills! Let's get one thing straight: this isn't an AYCE place, which does mean that I expect a higher quality of meat, and I think that Daebak delivers on this. For a party of eight (that included three hungry teenagers), we ordered 4 orders of Saeng Galbi (Angus Short Rib, $38/order) and 1 order of Cote Samgyup (Premium Pork Belly, $24/order). The Saeng Galbi is served on the bone and marinated in a deliciously sweet and savory soy-based sauce. It's a high price for the amount that they give you (a couple of bones per order), but the meat quality is surprisingly good, with a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture and a great level of seasoning. The pork belly comes with a generous portion for the price - I didn't feel as though the meat quality for this was as good, but since it's such a fatty, rich meat, it was relatively forgiving. If you order meat a-la-carte or in a combo, everyone at the table is given a trio of dips/sauces, which I believe include ssamjang (a spicy Korean fermented soybean paste), sesame oil, and a sweet, vinegar-based sauce that I couldn't quite place. These different dips/sauces really served to enhance the rich flavors of the meat! One thing that I wish they had was free lettuce to make ssam (lettuce + meat wraps), but they charge an extra $5 for this, which I guess I'm just not used to. They did include some free vegetables on the side to grill, such as onions, squash, and mushrooms. For extra food, we ordered their Wings ($12 for 5 pieces) - you get a choice of honey garlic, sweet & spicy or soy garlic sauce (we chose sweet and spicy). I didn't try any, since they're twice-fried and not gluten free, but members of our party generally liked them, and they're served with cubes of pickled white radish to help cut the greasiness. We also got two orders of Steamed Egg ($7/order), which was nice and smooth-tasting, with a good amount of seasoning. Their Soondubu Jigae (Soft Tofu Soup, $15) came with onions, zucchini, mixed seafood and egg. The portion was a good size, and it's nice that they didn't make the egg an additional cost. The spice level of the soup was perfect, though we did wish for a larger portion of seafood. Lastly, my cousin ordered the Bibim Naengmyun (Spicy Beef Broth Noodle Soup, $14 for a large portion). This came with a generous portion of "ice-cold beef broth noodle soup with sweet and spicy gochujang vinaigrette garnished with slice of beef, Asian pear, pickled radish & a hard-boiled egg." I don't think this dish was revolutionary, and it was definitely a bit more watery than most bibim naengmyun I've had (usually, it's less of a soup and more of a spicy noodle dish), but it was refreshing and light compared to the meats. Overall, I think that Daebak is a solid spot for KBBQ - everything tasted fairly good, the quality of the food is decent, and while it's not cheap, they don't have a ton of competition in the area, so the prices aren't outrageous. I want to say that I may not like Korean Barbecue, so this review is not to discourage anyone. I expected more flavor, and I am not a fan of cooking my own meat. However, go see for yourself how you like it. So, if you know how it works or have been there before you will know the rules. We sat there for 30 minutes without a waiter. We did get water, but that took about 15 minutes. Apparently, you ring a bell on your table. The food was okay, but I don't think I would ever get pork or chicken to cook myself. Therefore, I would stay away from those and at a minimum the pork is not the best idea. We got pork belly and that was a big mistake, not flavorful and hard to cook. I felt like I may get sick if the either meats weren't cooked well or they touched the veggies. The sauces were good and the rice. There was not much instruction given and they were not that friendly. Maybe it was a tired crew, who knows, but it was just fair. Go see yourself and let me know. read more

As a Korean, this place is just not good. I've been here three times and I always leave slightly grossed out. My third time has sealed the fact that I will never come back. It is just NEVER clean. I always have to ask them to give me new utensils, cups, and their grills are not cleaned either. Tables and seats are always sticky. I'm not sure why this place is rated so high, but maybe because it is one of the few KBBQ spots in the metro Detroit area? I think Kimchi Box Plus is far superior in terms of quality of meat and cleanliness. This place tends to serve you cheaper quality cuts and either over or under marinates. Their service is also nonexistent, rarely coming to your table to change your grill or give you refills. There is a bell on the table so when you're ready to order or need something, you can push the bell and a waiter will show up. They sat us in the back room with 3- 4 other parties in a family style set up. They each had their own waiter. They ALL got the water jug, we didn't. They all got the banchan immediately upon sitting, we didn't. We waited 10 minutes before anyone came to take our order and that's only because we flagged down one of their waiters who were very attentive to them. We kept pressing the service bell and we heard it go off outside in the main dining room; yet no one came. They even thought the bell was defective. Alas, it was our waiter who was. Not sure if he was overwhelmed or what but it just put a damper on our experience. We had to ask repeatedly for things from other waiters who were great ( refills, grill changes etc). Sometimes they said oh let me get your waiter instead. Beefy, meaty, goodness. This was the best for me. Cote Samgyup (Pork) the menu was confusing AF but this was basically regular samyupsal. Can't really go wrong with this here. Add some of the ban chan to a lettuce wrap with this for extra goodness. Would reconsider: Bulgogi. Was just okay for me. Came here for dinner at 530 on thanksgiving eve. Everything was yummy overall. We got the A1 daebak combo for the meatz. It's a good variety and you cook everything yourself on the grill. It's nice that this place has these tube vents that can come down closer to the stove so the smoke can be dissipated better. I didn't expect to eat a lot since I'm getting over something but I kept eating and eating since the balance was so wondering between the freshness and coldness of the salad and side dishes to the hotness of the doenjang jjigae (spicy tofu soup) and steamed egg. We also got the seafood pancake. It doesn't have much flavor but there's lot of dips (3) that is given to you at the beginning. Service was also good (you press a button on the table) but know that they will add gratuity (20ish%) to your bill (at least they did for our group of 6). Pro tip on the side dishes. If they have mashed potatoes as a side dish, eat it with the Kim chi. They go real well together as the sweetness of the creamy potatoes and the tart fermented slickness of the Kim chi is a beautiful marriage of flavors. read more
