Ordered an eel avocado and tuna roll for a late lunch, just after 1pm. It was about $16. Presentation was basically supermarket style, as expected & easy to carry out. Rolled both for me in just under 10 minutes. Rice was good, sticky and vinegary as expected, and the tuna and eel quality were great; eel was a bit smaller with a bit more skin than usual, but very tasty and not too saucy. I called back once I got home to get a refund, and the woman who picked up the phone said they don't do refunds and proceeded to burp in the phone. She told me that I did not order the combination plates, and tried to tell me I ordered the Asian dishes; yet, the prices I paid for the meals were the prices for the combination plates. They're down to a very small storefront with just a few booths- there once was a gorgeous larger restaurant with full sushi bar/high top and a happy hour everyday- Now it seems primarily focused on take out but if you get lucky, you can sit and eat too. I always order the chirashi at a sushi place because I'm fish forward- less add-ins- and it tasted fresh, delicious and presented well on a sturdy bowl of rice. A very cute little scene (dining room currently closed), but I would hardly consider this a store front. Yes, the sushi counter/case is literally RIGHT in your face when you walk in - who doesn't want this?! They have no choice BUT to keep it clean! Everything was clean and fresh and right there to see. The lady running the place was polite and professional, no complaints. She said the order would be ready in 20 minutes, it was ready in 20 minutes. She greeted her regulars on the phone by name and even remembered some of their orders. The only disappointment was not being able to sit and experience the coziness and inviting feeling of the dining room, to no fault of theirs! I look forward to a day when places like this can fully re-open. And now, the food. 5 stars for freshness and quality. Not one SINGLE funky piece of fish. The reason for 3 stars is that if you are not coming for happy hour, it is very expensive. Also, the craft cocktails that they have are all extremely sweet, and I find that the sake offered is more on the sweet side, as well. Also, the side salad is just...sad. A very vast and roomy sushi spot. I liked the fountain at the front. The large bar was their sushi bar, tons of seats for a quick sushi meal. We sat in the booth and I headed to the bathroom to wash my hands. I nearly slipped and fell, but was able to catch myself. The bathroom floor was covered in this waxy or slimy film. I came out and informed the host, he barely made an audible or a head gesture indicating he understood. The soap dispenser seems rather delayed in the dispensing of soap. I had removed my hand after I heard the sensor kick on and had nothing in my hand and then a second or two after I removed my hand it dispensed the soap onto the counter. A few waitstaff running around. Our waitress seemed nice enough and took our order and brought it out as it was ready. We started off with the house salads with ginger dressing, then split the veggie tempura and 3 Cali rolls with added cream cheese and scallions, each were an extra $0.75 charge. The house salad was decent, all iceberg lettuce and the dressing was fair. My favorite ginger dressing hands down is still at Noble Fish. The veggie tempura wasn't bad but would have been nice to have a bit more sweet potato, maybe one onion and maybe one red pepper or something, it was rather heavy on the green beans. Dipping sauce is good though. The Cali with the Krab salad wasn't too bad, but could have used a bit more cream cheese for flavor and more scallions. I couldn't taste the onions at all in any bite of the rolls. Saw maybe 1-2 small pieces in a few of the bites was all. We finished and paid and headed out. I went back to the restroom to wash my hands and the floor was still filmy and dirty. The food is decent for sure, but needs some work on cleanliness to take it up a notch. Pretty good sushi, but very slow service especially since they weren't busy on Monday night. Marlin and Vegas rolls are my favorite, wonton soup is a pretty large serving and is very tasty. Cafe Sushi was my first-ever sushi experience when I was in highschool. My brother used to take me here because he loves the fried cheesecake. After moving to NYC and experiencing some of the best sushi in the States, I can finally appreciate the quality of sushi made at cafe sushi. After not having been to cafe sushi in over 10 years, I dragged my husband (who hates fish) to an early weeknight dinner. I love how diverse the menu is, and love it even more that they have a happy hour menu. We started with the edamame, and my husband ordered a chicken platter. He was blown away by how much food he got and the quality. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a sweet potato roll and was in absolute heaven. This place is an absolute hidden gem. They have this special where you order one appetizer off of a list of 6-7 choices, you get 20% off of your sushi (until the end of June). the meh: the small plates - really meh. I tired about 8 dishes and I can't say there was anything I would ever order again. The noodles sounded exciting, but fell flat. The vegetable dumplings were gummy. The fried tofu thing had no flavor. The broiled mackerel was so tasteless. And oh, the kicker... I ordered this shrimp with spicy sauce -- that tasted like Chef Boyardee with some really mild red pepper. It was honestly terrible. the vegetarian appetizer - peanut butter sauced in different cold vegetables. It was just boring. Conclusion: Hanzo is so worth checking out for Japanese small plates. The dishes are much more exciting there, a bit cheaper, and infinitely tastier. Cafe Sushi is going to be my go-to sushi place... at least until they end this 20% off deal. Love the Sashimi! Consistently fresh and good. Nice presentation. Sitting and talking with the Sushi chefs is always good conversation. They are helpful and nice, especially, the one from Bali! I tend to skip the vegetable and main dishes since I love the sashimi and rolls. But they are very good and worth a try! The only cons are the service which is good but not great and the weird decor. It reminds me of dining at Holiday Inn although the sushi bar is nice. Can get expensive. Overall, Chef Yoshiro Nakamura has a wonderful restaurant. read more

I can't believe I haven't already review Cafe Sushi! Thanks to Yelp's friendly reminder on the homepage, I can now review what I thought I had reviewed forever ago! Cafe Sushi is our go-to sushi place for a few reasons - 1. They have a large sushi bar, we like sitting at the bar and watching the fish being prepared. It would be even better if the sushi chef would take the orders as well like a normal sushi bar. This is a bit of a side rant regarding all/most sushi bars in Michigan. Oh and reason number 2. They serve alcohol. Sad but true, I really like hot sake with my nigiri. Now we have been coming here for over a year now, and we have tried a lot of the dishes, and not a lot of the rolls. The nigiri has been consistent, and my new favorite is the marlin. Enjoying sushi becomes really difficult when you are pregnant, as there are a lot of fish that you are supposed to avoid, and you're not supposed to eat the raw stuff in case you get sick - gasp. Well I am not so evil that I would force my husband to forgo sushi for 9 months, and lets be honest I really had to have a fix as well. This led me to venture into portions of the menu I would normally avoid. The tempura veggies and shrimp are usually good, the cucumber and seaweed salads are good, the new cherry blossom roll is enormous and fairly tasty. As far as sushi in Michigan - this is a great option, and a heck of a lot cheaper than that really trendy place on Big Beaver. read more

The sushi was okay and man were the bento box really sucky. Bento boxes are very standard Japanese food and isn't that difficult to make. I ordered a cold noodle dish and it never came. I just told the waitress to cancel it. The only item we ordered that was actually delicious was Jalapeño Calamari 9.95 (Sautéed calamari with onions, garlic and jalapeño peppers). I don't even think this is an authentic dish. Overall, I am not sure if I would make the trip out here. If I worked around the corner I would come here not too often. read more

In the mid-eighties, I was lucky enough to tour Japan with a band for a month. I developed an affection for the country, its people and its food. Thus, I always look forward to a trip to a new Japanese restaurant. Today, I ordered a veggie bento, which started with miso soup and salad. The soup was excellent, more substantial and flavorful than most. The salad was only OK (a more balanced sesame dressing and non-iceberg lettuce would have helped). Then came the main part of the meal, which was excellent. Veggie gyoza (dumplings) were well-flavored with an appropriate soy dipping sauce. Vegetable in the sushi had the right consistency. Tempura veggies were battered lightly and served with dipping broth. Fresh vegetables were braised in a simple but tasty garlic broth and accompanied with brown rice. In the end, I was in a happy food coma. The main room was classy without being intimidating. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Cafe Sushi exceeded my expectations for Detroit-area Japanese food. It will be my go-to Japanese restaurant in the area. read more

I came to Cafe Sushi on a whim. I was on my lunch hour and I wanted to check this place out because I love good sushi. The lunch special that I took advantage of was the Bento Box! Amamzing choices and great options. You can mix and match, which means there is a bunch of combinations one can choose from. I ended up ordering the General Tszao Chicken, with a smoked salmon philly roll, tempura veggies which came with a soup and a side salad with a ginger dressing. The chicken was terrific, cooked crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with a fantastic sauce that had zip and sweetness to it. The smoked salmon rolls were tasty too, not too overtly smoked and the tempura veggies were cooked perfectly too. The service was lovely. My waitress was patient with any questions I had and made suggestions based on finding out my tates. Very professional and personable. The downside to my meal was the salad was TERRIBLE! It was iceberg lettuce with the most spicy and raw tasting ginger dressing I've ever had. Also, I can't remember what soup I had, which tells you how good it was. Went here on 10/28/11 with my sister. We were a bit leery as some of the reviews on here are pretty mixed. We were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was quite different than we were expecting. It's very nice inside. I had the Miso Soup which was very tasty and the Shrimp Tempura Appetizer. My sister had the Vegetable Tempura Appetizer. Then for our meal she had the Surf n Turf Special Roll and I had the Max Special Roll. Hers was delicious! Mine had got some rather good reviews, that's why I ordered it. It wasn't as spicy as I would have liked and it had way too much of the Shrimp and Onion Spicy Mayo sauce, but it was still good. I probably won't order it again, but at least I can say I tried it. Since we did not know how large the rolls were going to be, our server had suggested we order as we go. This was plenty of food to fill us up. We almost couldn't finish the sushi rolls. The dishes came out in a nice presentation. Long rectangular and large sqare plates were used. The chopsticks they provided were kind of difficult to work with. They seemed to be of the Extra-long variety, plastic and got greasy from the tempura so the food was sliding around ;-) It got to the point where I was just picking up the food with my fingers. All in all, a very nice experience, healthy portions and I would definitely go here again. read more

Uni! Uni! Uni! A friend and I were craving sushi out in Troy, MI, and came very close to just buying something from Walmart. How lucky we were to find a sushi bar in the same plaza? (And a nail salon where I got my eyebrows done. Chaching!) Greeted from the time we opened the door, the hostess sat us at the bar and handed us menus. My friend had a Pepsi and I got to enjoy a Ramune. I haven't had one in years and it literally felt like I was back in high school. The chef knew everything there was to know about sushi, made lots of recommendations, gave us little pieces here and there to try. It was wonderful. Of course, I had to order everything in sight. The tamago, tako, uni, scallops, avocado stuffed in everything. I ate and I ate and I couldn't have been more happy. The chef made a huge platter for a party and apparently got the order wrong. I would have offered to eat it if it didn't have shrimp in it (I'm allergic). It was so beautiful, but they couldn't re-purpose it, so the plate just sat there all night long. Broke my heart. I enjoy Cafe Sushi quite a bit. The service is always extremely friendly and prompt and accurate. It's a large space so we can always get a table here. The menu is large - nigiri, standard & special sushi rolls (about 60 to choose from), bentos, apps, salads and entree options. I almost always get sushi - YUM! I have had the bento box at lunch and it was delicious - enjoyed trying a variety of items. The ginger salad is nice, although the dressing seemed creamier than I remember (maybe a new recipe?) -- not the best I've had. And I will agree that it does seem like the portions have gotten smaller under new management, but it's not a deal breaker. The decor is kind of hilarious - French impressionist artwork -- I guess that's the "Cafe" part of the name. The cocktails are strong and delicious. Sake, wine and beer, too. Everything we ate was good. They have these clunky red chopsticks. They are hard to hold due to size but also they have a glossy finish so everything slips out of their grasp. After a few minutes of frustration we asked for carry-out style wooden chopsticks. They should just throw out those useless fancy sticks! Otherwise I LOVED this place!!! read more

As far as restaurants go I had a very pleasant time coming to this place. It wasn't as crowded as I had hoped that it would be on a Wednesday night but I enjoyed the extra attention as a result. The staff is very nice and although it didn't appear to be owned by Japanese people I figured it was worth giving it a try. We had the jalapeño soft shell crabs upon recommendation from the sweet waitress and they were really spicy to my delight. I would have liked for there to be at least one more soft shell crab in the mix but i know that they can be expensive..... Then we had the black bean mussels. They were the green ones from New Zealans and quite plump. A tad bit over cooked but permissible. We rounded out the meal with a Jameson roll. Although I usually like to stick to traditional rolls I will break out and try ones that sound interesting. The waitress recommended it as well. It underwhelmed me and I don't think that I will order it again in the future. We also ordered the hot sour soup and a salmon roll for my child. I specifically asked that they not put any wasabi in the container but they must have forgotten. It coated some of the roll and we weren't happy about this. The miso soup was good but the sushi I ordered was sub-par in quality. Worst of all the distant, distracted, inattentive, with a zombie-like disposition server didn't even bother to check-up and refill my water; and it wasn't even crowded inside.
