The miso soup came out first and was pretty standard. The Tako Su had large slices of octopus with plenty of cucumbers. It was decent, nothing standout. The gyoza was actually an accidental order because I thought I had ordered shumai. Looking back, I probably should've realized something was off when the server asked if I wanted them steamed or grilled. Ironically, they ended up being one of the better items. I took them home and even cold later on, they were still good. The sashimi appetizer had a nice variety and was probably one of the stronger dishes of the night. Unfortunately, the shumai completely missed the mark. It was very wet -- you can even see it in the photo -- and just not how shumai is supposed to be prepared. Personally, I think Asahi Sushi does this dish far better, including the sauce. The beef bibimbap was also disappointing for me. I love bibimbap served in a scorching hot stone bowl where the rice crisps up and caramelizes at the bottom. This lacked all of that. In my opinion, both Asahi Sushi and Sumo Sushi do bibimbap significantly better. If that's what you're craving, this wouldn't be my recommendation. As for the sushi rolls -- the S n T and White Tiger Roll -- they were just bland. Not terrible, not inedible, but very forgettable. Overall, my experience was okay, but nothing about it stood out enough to make me want to return. The servers were pleasant, but there were no recommendations or guidance offered, and the food never really moved beyond average. I ended up giving this place 2 stars for three main reasons: 1. The servers lacked recommendations or menu guidance. 2. The food overall was bland. 3. There are significantly better sushi options nearby. If you're looking for exceptional sushi, udon, and bibimbap, I'd personally recommend Asahi Sushi instead. It's only about 12 minutes away and, in my opinion, absolutely worth the drive for the quality, presentation, service, and overall experience.

SO good I'll definitely be back. Service was great and food was so fresh and delicious!read more

The hostess seated us and provided menus. Their drink menu had a number of tasty sounding options, all at a good price so I ordered the Yuzu Sour. It was better than a basic Whiskey Sour, you could still taste its roots but smoother with a hint of pomegranate. I ordered the Veggie Gyoza app and the Veggie Tempura app. Prices were incredibly reasonable and the food tasted great. I see why they are so busy - this is a combo unheard of these days. Hubby got the Hand Roll Combo which came with Miso Soup. He really enjoyed it. This location is easy to find in downtown Rochester, although it's still metered parking in the street. I highly recommend stopping in if you are in the mood for fresh sushi for a great price.

Sumo Sushi and Seafood is located right on Main St. in downtown Rochester. There is street parking in front of the building, and a parking garage just a few minutes walk away. The sake flights are a nice way to try a few different flavors. I chose the plum, lychee, and mango. I loved the plum one a lot! If you order over $18 of food, you can choose between a complimentary miso soup or salad. For our rolls, we got the Spicy Crunchy Tuna, which I liked because the spicy tuna was mixed inside of the role. The Three Musketeers tempura roll had tuna, salmon, and yellowtail and was topped with spicy mayo and sweet soy. It was very delicious! The red dragon roll had shrimp tempura, cucumber, and cream cheese inside and was topped with torched salmon and chili crunchy garlic, which added a nice flavor to it. My favorite thing we ordered was the tuna tataki, which is seared tuna with ponzu sauce. The fish was very fresh and flavorful!

It's a large place with tables, booths or seating at the bar. The decor isn't much to write home about, but it's comfy and clean. I started off enjoying Red flying fish roe or Tobiko. Highlights from the table included: the Shrimp Tempura Hand Roll, the Spider roll and the Salmon roll. For me, the California King roll was the show stealer. Not sure how they were able to get such a fresh taste to the Alaskan king crab, but it's a winner! The service was terrific. Very efficient. I drink a ton of water, so I appreciate places that keep the glasses full and other curiosities. Keep in mind I'm no connoisseur, but I thought every roll I ate tasted great. It was the miso soup that got me. If it were possible, a bit gamey and too salty. Come try it, it could be just me! 10/25

I live out in the Lansing area and met a friend who had the same thoughts about Paul's as we did, but picked it for its parking and easy to navigate location on a Saturday night in December. We were all so pleasantly surprised -- I'm writing from the following morning and I'm still amazed at the change of this place! I ordered a couple apps -- the Brussels sprouts and the boom boom shrimp. The Brussel sprouts were a touch over for me with the meat not quite being crispy enough, but that didn't stop the rest of my table from finishing them. The boom boom shrimp was delicious -- I found the spice-level completely appropriate for something I'm expecting to have 'a touch of spice' while my husband found zero spice. Would order the shrimp again. They did away with the breadbasket of yesteryears and switched to real, cut, French bread with whipped butter! I had the French onion soup which came last to the table and I wasn't mad at that as it was HOT -- thank you! My friend ordered the tuna on sourdough which was perfect with beautifully crispy fries. And my husband ordered a giant burger, that had the perfect cook on it! Overall, we had a lovely time. The wait staff were also extremely delicate and respectful in nudging us to let us know there was a massive line waiting for our table (something we didn't realize as we were chatting and catching up).

Their located in a strip mall off Rochester Road and Avon with other businesses. Walking in, the place had nobody in it! There was a nice lady who was watching a show on her ipad and getting stuff together for later. She told me to sit anywhere, so I did. The menus pretty good with pricing that wasn't going to drill a hole in my wallet for once. LOL. I ordered crab rangoon with some drunken noodles and a water since I needed hydration. They were kind of stingy on the sweet and sour sauce with the rangoons, but the noodles were actually quite good. I stuck with the mild sauce, and it was good. I could taste the spices as they were subtle and not overpowering, but spicy enough that it gave the dish some flavor and depth. It's definitely not a fancier place, but the food was good and I didn't have to wait. The lady who helped me was pleasant and I really enjoyed her time. It was nice to have a nice quiet lunch for once without the hustle and bustle to decompress after a long week at work and the gloomy weather outside.
