My family took me here for a sushi feast on my birthday, their treat. We went early and it was not crowded at all. They had been there before and said it was VERY GOOD. I think that they are correct. I felt like Sushi and found that this place was not only right around the corner, but got good reviews as well. So, I stopped in! I love that the place has plenty of seating and is clean as well. (some sushi places look really super tired around here, or have barely any space to sit.) My server was prompt and helped me review the menu as I had asked about lunch specials. I decided to pass on the lunch specials, but went with two rolls and miso soup. Both were fantastic, and I really enjoyed my time here. Plus, the prices were good, so my bill wasn't to terribly bad. I liked it here better than others for a variety of reasons. Primarily they have tons of seating and the place is clean. Long overdue for an updated review on Makimoto! Been coming here for at least 6 years now? It truly is the best sushi around the area. Always fresh, good portion, friendly staff, food is consistent, and decent prices. Ordered carry-out and I was happy to see that you could order online. Navigating the online ordering was easy and there are plenty of options to pick from. Made my order, paid online, and my food would be ready in 20 minutes. I got an order edamame, a Sunday Morning roll, and a Philly roll. The edamame was hot and steaming but not very seasoned, so I added some salt. The rolls were perfection. Sunday Morning roll had a good crunch while the Philly roll was creamy goodness between the cream cheese and smoked salmon. Never had a bad meal here and one of my favorites! read more

I had a taste for sushi while at Great Lakes Crossing mall. After a google search I decided to give them a try. There were only a couple of people inside so I was told I could sit anywhere. Water was immediately brought over and I placed my order. I ordered the veggie spring rolls, spicy shrimp roll and east roll. They started me with miso soup and some pickled cucumbers. Both were quite tasty. The spring rolls came out surprisingly fast. The first bite was ok but the second bite I got a mouthful of cold veggies. I sent them back just as my sushi was coming out. The waiter apologized profusely and verified I didn't want them to make another order of spring rolls. The sushi was tasty but seems to be missing something. I'm not sure what, but the flavors just weren't meshing for me. As I got my bill , a lady, I assume one of the owners came over and apologized for the cold spring rolls. She stated the cook needed a break and she thought she could handle making an order of spring rolls. LOL she told me to make sure I come back and she promises not to cook anything. Came here as a fifth wheel on a group "date." Setting my friend up with my friend's friend and she recommended coming here. Walking in, the restaurant was much larger then I expected from walking up. We had a reservation, and good thing we did, the place was pretty busy and another table of 6 came in right when we did. I give Makimoto 5 stars for wonderful customer service. My friend has a slight soy allergy and our server checked ingredients for two sauces to make sure there was no soy. She's not Epi-pen level allergic but it's better to be safe then sorry. I ordered the Raider, Sweet Potato, Spicy Berry and Rainbow roll. We had quite a variety of sushi at the table and I like true unique combinations Makimoto offers. The Spicy Berry was really good. It is salmon, pear, jalapeño topped with strawberry and balsamic. Everything I tried was really delicious, the service was fantastic and we really had a good night. Although my friend was only feeling friend vibes from the new guy, we definitely found a new sushi place to add to our rotation! read more

The stench of smoke hit me when I first walked in the door and I had to ask if they allowed smoking and they said it's wafting from next door and somehow permeates through the wall. For a non-smoker it was noxious and strong, despite it being through a wall. Ordered 3 Cali with green onion and cream cheese and one as a hand roll, spicy Mexican roll, salmon teriyaki roll and salmon teriyaki hand roll and a ginger salad to go. Small cucumber salad comes with the rolls and miso soup. I ordered an additional ginger salad too. The stench of smell and some air freshener kept trickling into my nose as I ate, changed my eating experience immensely. Must do something about the hookah stench. The Cali special rolls were tightly wrapped but I tend to like more avocado and cream cheese in the roll ratio, still not bad. I also prefer the lighter colored ginger, the pink hue of their ginger doesn't appeal to me and I refuse to touch it. The one sushi chef, Jay seems quite friendly, amiable and was receptive to my later add on orders, the other shorter guy that came out had a scowl on his face and were, maybe he had a bad day. Daniela waited on me and she is a great waitress, good and friendly personality, attentive. Luckily the curmudgeon sushi chef went back into the kitchen, the friendly chef finished off my order and brought out all of my food for me. read more

Always consistent. This is my go to for sushi in this particular area. The selection is always fresh, well prepared, nice sized portions. Rolls are made nice and tight, sashimi is lovely, and there is something for everyone. I've tried other items on the menu, the bibimbop is so good. Be patient with the bibimbop if you order it in the restaurant, the stone bowl keeps the dish lava hot for a long time. You'll be the last one to finish your meal! If you order it carry out, it definitely won't be as hot. Service has always been good. Staff is courteous and prompt. The place has never been really busy, and I've probably eaten here a dozen times. The place is usually super clean. Only once was our table and booth seat not wiped down well. You'll have no problem getting a seat, it's never super busy. The carry out portion of the business does seem to be always bustling. We've carried out a couple times, and it's been great, but I prefer to eat sushi in the restaurant as much as I can. read more

Our problem was the service was terrible. They forgot our gyozas and never even came to ask how we were doing or to offer refills. I would have liked some onions to help pick up the flavor of the sauce, but maybe that's not part of the proper dish. The soup and cucumber salad were okay, but I wouldn't have ordered them if they weren't part of the lunch meal. Ok. So you've never had mango in sushi before? Think it's weird or might taste funny? Maybe it's not authentic enough, or not Japanese enough? Wrong! It's delicious! And Makimoto is the only restaurant that I personally know that uses mango (yes, mango as in the sweet sometimes sour fruit) in sushi. And it's a magical and genius idea. You owe it to your taste buds to try one of their mango rolls. Mangomoto (tuna, shrimp, spicy crab salad, mango slices, trio sauces), Mango Crunch (spicy yellowtail, jalapeno, mango, tempura crunch), Tango (tuna, mango), and Tempura Mango (tempura mango, cream cheese, avocado, trio sauces, tempura crunch) are their crazy delicious mango concoctions. I just wish they had more. Still hungry? Then try any of their other rolls. From the venerable California roll to Spicy Mexican to Kogi Tempura (marinated beef, fried roll, eel sauce) almost everything is universally good. So yes, sushi is their calling card. But their entrees are good too. Try their Korean offerings such as bi bim bab, bulgogi, or Japanese mainstays such as noodles, tempura, katsu, hibachi and etc. Also, don't skip past their appetizers. One in particular: Crispy Dynamite which is crab and spicy sauce on top of a bed of sushi rice, is so heavenly that I often eat it as an entree. Just got done eating lunch here and was not impressed. My boyfriend and I got the chili shrimp rice bowl, spicy tuna/California/salmon roll platter, and the steak yaki udon. Everything was a bit too sweet, including the sushi rolls and as well as the complimentary cucumber salad. I was also disappointed with the serving size. Although it was a lunch special serving, I expected a bit more for the price I paid for my noodles ($11). The food wasn't the best, but the service was phenomenal. The hostess was very kind and efficient when seating us. Our waitress was also friendly and made sure we weren't waiting for water or the bill. Unfortunately, this doesn't make it to my ''go to' spot for Japanese cuisine, but I would definitely encourage people to give it a try! read more

Looks can be deceiving! It's a sushi place in a plaza... but, it is really good! Have been here twice now and both times very fresh good sushi... and great service! This time we sat right up at the bar, we were helped pretty quickly. One of our favorite rolls is their kogi roll tempura style. Omg! Butter in your mouth! It's good and so different....and I haven't seen that roll at other places. However, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the sushi options. They also have good cucumber salad. Everything was SO good! Between 3 people we had 5 rolls, the crunchy salad, shrimp/veggie tempura, and chefs choice sashimi. ALL of it was good! My only complaint, and it's super minor, is that server should have explained which sushi roll was which when he took the food to the table. Customers want to know what to reorder so telling us the titles of each roll would have been appreciated. The establishment was also super clean and everything was very fresh.
