You can see from my other reviews that I rarely give a bad review, but my visit to Neelys was truly awful. Probably my worst restaurant experience in ten years.
So hubs and I love BBQ and make a point to try BBQ joints where ever we go. We have been to Memphis several times, but never to Neelys. It was just me and my two young kids on this trip so I was in charge of the BBQ decision and chose Neelys. As my seven year old said when we left, "that was a BIG mistake!".
I am guessing this location stays afloat due to a few hard core regulars who refuse to give up on it and a lot of tourists who don't know any better! On my visit I was say only 25% seemed local and the rest tourists/first timers.
We arrived at Neelys for a late lunch. It was busy, but not slammed. We seated ourselves and pretty quickly received menus. Our server was reasonably quick on drink order/delivery/order taking. But then the wait began. And we waited. And we waited. During all this waiting I had a lot of opportunity to observe the staff in action and I can honestly say I have never seen a surlier bunch of people in my life. Do not question the Neely's waitresses! So, as stated, this was a late lunch and we were hungry! Our waitress finally approached with a tray of food and set a plate in front of my older son. She then set a plate in front of me, but it was not what I ordered. I told her this and she took my plate and then mumbled that she picked up the wrong tray and walked off to deliver it to another table (came in way after us). The food (bbq sandwich and fries) just delivered to my son was cold. Stone cold. So cold it almost felt refrigerated. Took a little while, but I saw the waitress and gave her the plate back. After about 5 mins the waitress came back with a new plate for him and food for me (still no food for second son). I immediately noticed my pork was swimming in watery looking broth and was cold, as were my beans. So, I took my plate to the waitress area and told her it was cold and I needed new food. It literally took her 15 minutes and one more trip from me to the waitress station pleading about how hungry we were to get a new plate for me and my younger son's plate - which was only a side of fries!! When she finally set the food down she did apologize for the wait. But we still lacked the bread we ordered and our cake- which my older son was more than ready for at this point.
The waitress threw in an extra piece of cake to apologize, but I did not tip. I always tip! I seriously contemplated complaining to a mgr to not pay my bill - that's how mad I was. I was there for almost two hours for two BBQ sandwiches, fries and three pieces of cake for Petes Sake! In the end I paid, but frankly only because the staff was all so surly that I was afraid to ask for fear they would embarass/harass me in front of the dining room. It's really that bad! For example, as I was waiting to pay, there was an couple checking out. They were very friendly/happy and asked the cashier a typical touristy type question and she briefly responded to them and then cut them off right to their face, looked at me and asked me if I was ready. They were dumbfounded by her rudeness and so was I - even after the miserable experience I just went through with the waitress. I just couldn't believe that a business that clearly relies on tourist money is so unhospitable!
In the end, if the food had been super it would have made all that pain bearable, but the food was only passable. The fries were standard frozen fare, the potato salad had a strange aftertaste and the pork tasted no better than what I make in the slow cooker. I've had better pork from guys working out of food trailers. The cake was okay, but not great. The baked beans were the only stand out. Quite meaty and good. I saw several others plates and they didn't look appealing either. The cheese on the BBQ nachos looked like the neon orange junk you get at the movie theatre. The lady I saw with them pushed them away after about three bites.
It would be easy to assume I caught a good waitress on a bad day, but spend a while in neelys and you will see I am not wrong. I saw it all around me during my visit. A woman sat down at a booth next to me and I bet she waited close to 20 minutes before they even brought her a menu. I could not believe she waited so long. I kept holding back the urge to tell her to run like wind - far, far away from Neelys!! I did not tell her, so I am telling you. Spend your money else where! read more
