I was in the market for my first pair of Birkenstocks. I did my research online and was debating between ordering online or instore. The nearest store was in the Triangle. I am a South Austinite and paying no attention when I was driving and ended up at the Research one. When we did make it to the store it seemed crowded on such a cold day, but I couldn't say anything because I too was there looking at sandals. I didn't see the initial pair I was looking for but ended up with a similar one. I am a 9.5 in Womens and was informed that they do not in fact come in half sizes but run big, so I tried on the 9 & 10. The 9 was a perfect match and I was having my own Cinderella moment. Luckily, I was prepared for the price so there wasn't a shock and I ended signing up for the rewards program and will most definitely be back for another pair. I found this store while searching for a place that sold Birkenstock sandals. I had some pain in my feet and came to this store. After talking with the staff in the store, I spent a while trying on several pairs of sandals and also some socks that they said might also help with the pain. I went in again and found the pair of Birk Sandals, they had my size, and they were cheaper than I remember but the same quality. The only thing was (and she warned me), the edges of the straps were rough at first. I mess around with leather work stuff. I just burnished the edges so that they didn't need the normal break in. My feet have been hurting so much. I've been getting massages every Saturday and they are only able to temporarily relieve my aches. I've bought foot braces to wear at night and strangely that doesn't work either even though reviews I've read from other folks on their plantar fasciitis. I work out almost everyday, run, kickbox, you name it and I do it and am on my feet, active and ready to go! Almost ash my wits end, I yelp some places to go for orthopedic shoes because I'm at the point where comfy feet matter most now. This place showed up on Yelp with high ratings which really excited me, that and being down the street from where I live. I've never set foot into the store and I was greeted various times by the employees who were more than helpful to let me peruse to my hearts content as I braced myself for "granny shoes". Me, a late 20's something woman, wearing orthopedic shoes, flat and sensible. Well, guess what? I'm here to tell you if clogs aren't your thing, that's ok! They have so many cute flats, cute dressy strappy sandals, wedges and even boots for your choosing. I was so impressed. What even excited me more were the ladies that worked there were kind, patient and able to assist me when I needed to grab someone for pulling shoes from the back when I was ready to buy. I am price conscious so I didn't want to spend more than $100 per pair of shoes. I also am an "amazon comparison" price shopper but their prices in store were the same for majority of the shoes I was looking at. I like to read other folks purchase reviews as well as baseline the purchasing price. Can't help it. I scored a pair of "chuck" style sneakers which make me feel like I'm walking on clouds. I also had the ladies ship from the other store a pair of clearance sandals as they didn't have the shoe at the store here and was told it would arrive Monday for me to purchase and pick up then! I'm really excited and can't wait to go back to hopefully do a bit more research on some cute bootie style pair of shoes to splurge on. I have bought 3 pairs of shoes here. I'd like to get more, but ya know good shoes come at a price. A price I'm willing to pay, or try on and then look on Amazon for cheaper prices :D. They've got a great selection of shoes, especially the Birks which I'm a total fan of btw. They've got quite a few employees here and sometimes they're jam packed. But what I appreciate about this store is the laid back feel and the no pressure/no pushy approach. They sell a wide variety of well known, good brands with support and arch support. They are knowledgeable enough to help you find what you need. And they do have sales sometimes which I have taken advantage of. Instep is definitely my favorite shoe store in Austin and highly recommend if you are in need of real support for your feet. I'll definitely be back. I had an excellent experience, even though they didn't have what I needed (Chacos, currently a nationwide shortage) in stock. Kaitlin (I think?) continued to chat with me about the fit and what to look for. When I let her know I had bought a couple pairs to try from REI, she asked me to bring them in from my car so she could teach me how to adjust the straps and choose the right pair. I felt bad doing that since I knew I wouldn't be buying anything, but she insisted. She took the time to fit the shoes, evaluate as I walked around the store, and explain the care instructions. They have a lot of choices when it comes to Birkenstocks. Their staff is really knowledgeable and friendly. I dropped off some Birkenstocks to get repaired(oh and they do repairs, too) and they said it will be two weeks to have them ready. The cost is on the high side to get them repaired but I guess that is to be expected of the brand since they are a bit on the pricey to begin with. The rating would have been 5stars but they kind of dropped the ball on my repair order. They had a delay on the soles of my shoes for the repair but never called me even after a month had passed since I dropped them off so that's that. Otherwise I still love this place so I will be coming back either way. read more

Super impressed by the service at this store! Victoria helped me and she was wonderful! They're a local business and they'll do price matching! When you go into the store, you'll be approached by an employee after a few minutes. They personally help you try on lots of different shoes and sizes and let you walk around in them for awhile to test them out. I usually feel pretty uncomfortable in stores where employees follow you around, but this was a wonderful experience! I only went in to try on some shoes for sizing. I have been shopping at this location for over 3 years now. I have terrible feet. I literally cannot wear normal shoes so I solely shop here for all my footwear. I also stand for 10-14+ hours a day and I cannot be barefoot ever. I buy work shoes and slippers the most, but recently I've gotten a wonderful pair of wedges and want more! I have had nothing but great experiences here. Literally every single time I shop, I always leave feeling "wow that was great" I recommend them to anyone and everyone looking for great footwear and excellent customer service. I never thought I'd give 5 stars to a place that managed to sell me things I slip in to my shoes for $60 but here I am! I've been having awful crippling foot pain for the past few weeks even there I had no trauma and was just really confused and frustrated. I work on my feet all day and go to college so when not working, I'm walking over campus, up stairs, through parking lots, etc etc. Basically, I abuse my feet daily. I decided to give InStep a try after having a roommate years back that had worked there and remembering how knowledgeable she had been and man am I glad I did. Laura was incredibly educated, patient, and overall the coolest shoe lady I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. After only about 10 minutes of pain explanation and description of my day to day life, she had brought out about 12 boxes of shoes for me to try! I felt spoiled and important, which of course anyone likes to feel. She had some wonderful suggestions for me and explained my pain was most likely due to a damaged metatarsal and she offered me some shoes that would be great for relieving my pain and helping my foot heal. Unfortunately my student budget is kind of limited currently (end of the semester blues) but she was still able to work with me and I ended up purchasing some orthodic insoles that I can use in all my current shoes, or any shoes I may buy in the future. I can't even express how much better I feel overall already. I can walk nearly pain free after only a couple hours of using the insoles, and each step is like a masseuse carefully tending to each little dent and bone in my poor foot. I can't wait to go back and buy some sweet Birks once I save up a bit! read more

USE YOUR CREDIT CARD. I was unaware that the return policy for cash purchases would be so difficult. I got a $70 item I found out the next day wouldn't be covered by my insurance, at all. However, a foot supply store nearby was included in my program, and I got their goodies for a more affordable price. I returned to InStep the next day to get that wad of Christmas shopping money back. Or so I thought. Apparently, the owners do not keep cash in their stores. I understand this, it's for employee safety, but now I have to wait on a check, which I hope arrives before I fly home. Had I just used my credit card, it would have been credited back to the account. The moral of the story is: InStep, good. Return policy, sad - and it is in fact printed on their receipts, I'd just never noticed it. And get on your insurance website and check out medical supply stores covered before you spend bunches of dough elsewhere. Dang. read more

My original shopping experience was great from Leigh at the location on 35th street. Yes the shoes are expensive - however my Ortho recommended I buy all new shoes - so I started with three pairs to see how they felt. I had to go back after about 3 weeks to exchange a pair of shoes that I was having a problem with. I was exchanging them because the bottom of the soles started to separate from the shoe, and the shoes scuff easily. I did not have a pleasant experience with the sales person, however, the follow up from both the store manager, and the owner of the company have been exceptional. It is rare of a company to not only follow up immediately, but to also follow up over a month after my experience. The high level of customer service has earned them a loyal customer. Upon walking into the Central Austin (Triangle) location, I was greeted by Carla (AMAZING lady), who proceeded to spend the next several hours educating me on the various tradeoffs between sandals in their selection. Being the die-hard flip-flop wearer I was, I settled on a pair of Birkenstock Comos, my thinking being that even though they weren't top-of-the-line Birkenstocks, they HAD to be better than the flip flops I wearing (which had ZERO support)! Unfortunately, a few days into wearing them, I started noticing some serious problems. It turns out I have high insteps and the Como's thong was exerting a large amount of pressure on the tops of my feet with every forward step. The pain was so bad after a while that I had to go back to my old flip-flops just for relief. Additionally, they turned out to be a size too large and I very nearly had a nasty ankle roll. Needless to say, I was frustrated due to having spent money on a pair of shoes that were giving me so much pain. A little dejected, I made my way to the North Austin location to see if I could get any advice for my situation. I told my story to a saleswoman (her name escapes me at the moment), who listened with care and concern. She then informed me the store owner was present and that she would relay my story to her. It was then that I had the great fortune of meeting Laura, the owner of InStep. She listened to my story with the utmost care and concern. She took a look at my feet and quickly concluded that the Comos were not right for them. She then proceeded to personally pick out shoes for me and have them try me on! Mind you, I did not come in with the intention of getting my money back. Nevertheless, Laura found the right shoes for my feet (a pair of Birkenstock Arizonas one size down) and exchanged my old sweat-stained, two-week old worn Birkenstock Comos back for no charge at all! Now that's what I call customer service! I've been walking in my Birkenstock Arizonas in what feels like luxury now for several months and I couldn't be happier. They have truly made walking enjoyable again! Thank you, InStep employees, for you knowledge and patience. And most of all: thank you Laura. You quickly perceived my level of exasperation and put an end to my ordeal in the best way possible, going above and beyond my expectations to get me in the right pair of shoes. Always amusing when I go to a place that a doctor refers me to, and I find out later that the place actually has good reviews. It's usually the other way around. Anyway, as many others have said, Instep is a great place to go if you need insoles. I''m not sure if they can figure what you might need on their own, but I came in with a prescription from my foot doctor, and they had three options for me within five minutes. They put them in my shoes for me, had me try them, and let me decide which one I liked best. I told them that I was going to buy a new pair of shoes, and they didn't bother trying to sell me the ones that they have in store. They did give me some useful advice on what to look for, though. Some might feel that the price is kind of high at $60-$65 for insoles, but I don't know...I guess it depends on how long the insoles last. If they last for a year or more, I'd say $65 isn't too bad to be walking relatively painlessly. They do not take CareCredit credit cards, unfortunately, which was a bit of a bummer to me, but oh well. Otherwise, I couldn't be more satisfied. read more

The store is great! You're greeted as soon as you walk in and helped by a super knowledgeable shoe guru. Do I hate that my doc says I have to wear these shoes? Yes! Are they comfortable? I guess they're supposed to be - I think my poor feet are too far gone. They are pricey, but if you need Rx shoes in north or central Austin, this is the place to go. I know people who drive in from Killeen for the Danskos. They do have a really good clearance section, but the sizes remaining usually are not for me - the girl with the mutantly small achy feet. The selection is large and if you love Birkenstocks, this place has just about every style & color you could imagine. This place rocks. Karavel Shoes and InStep are the only shoe stores in town that actually have people who are knowledgeable about shoes. I guess Nordstrom's does too, but I think that place is frequented by the ladies buying shoes more so than men. That said, InStep has been very helpful fixing my orthotics. I have bad feet and when one of my orthotics got chewed up by the family dog, I thought I was going to have to spend $300 to get new ones. InStep fixed the chewed one up as good as new. They also have a ton of Birkenstock, Betula, Clark and other well-known brands that are both comfortable and decent-looking. I love InStep and just with there were more stores like it. Sadly, customer service is the exception rather than the rule these days. read more

The customer service is second-to-none. I was originally told that some Rx orthotics were going to be done on a recent Friday. After going through some rehab, I was naturally very anxious to start using them and exercising again to feel good--you know, what humans do to not have chronic pain. When I called at 11:00 am, Friday morning, I was informed that they wouldn't actually be ready until the following Tuesday or Wednesday. I was disappointed, the ensuing weekend would be the earliest opportunity to get out and run. At 4:30 pm the same day, they called me back and told me everything was ready to be picked up before the store closed at 6:00 pm. THIS--is what customer service is all about. And the very amazing worker that assisted me at the counter even was able to provide the health insurance claim forms for me to submit. If you read this, [high five]. read more

My wife was having a lot of pain in her feet. We first went to The Good Feet store where they tried to sell her 3 pairs (6 total) of off the rack inserts for $1,000!!! We went to Instep and were waited on by Cindy. Cindy was awesome! Cindy spend a lot of time with my wife and genuinely cared about her. After Cindy spend a long time with us, my wife walked out with two pairs (4 total) of inserts and a pair of sandals for about $150! It was sure better than $1,000!
